Efficient Image Reconstruction and Practical Decomposition for Dual-energy Computed Tomography

Dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has shown great potential and promising applications in advanced imaging fields for its capabilities of material decomposition. However, image reconstructions and decompositions under sparse views dataset suffers severely from multi factors, such as insufficiencies of data, appearances of noise, and inconsistencies of observations. Under sparse views, conventional filtered back-projection type reconstruction methods fails to provide CT images with satisfying quality. Moreover, direct image decomposition is unstable and meet with noise boost even with full views dataset. This paper proposes an iterative image reconstruction algorithm and a practical image domain decomposition method for DECT. On one hand, the reconstruction algorithm is formulated as an optimization problem, which containing total variation regularization term and data fidelity term. The alternating direction method is utilized to design the corresponding algorithm which shows faster convergence speed compared with the existing ones. On the other hand, the image domain decomposition applies the penalized least square (PLS) estimation on decomposing the material mappings. The PLS includes linear combination term and the regularization term which enforces the smoothness on estimation images. The authors implement and evaluate the proposed joint method on real DECT projections and compare the method with typical and state-of-the-art reconstruction and decomposition methods. The experiments on dataset of an anthropomorphic head phantom show that our methods have advantages on noise suppression and edge reservation, without blurring the fine structures in the sinus area in the phantom. Compared to the existing approaches, our method achieves a superior performance on DECT imaging with respect to reconstruction accuracy and decomposition quality.

Image Prediction for Limited-angle Tomography via Deep Learning with Convolutional Neural Network

Limited angle problem is a challenging issue in x-ray computed tomography (CT) field. Iterative reconstruction methods that utilize the additional prior can suppress artifacts and improve image quality, but unfortunately require increased computation time. An interesting way is to restrain the artifacts in the images reconstructed from the practical filtered back projection (FBP) method. Frikel and Quinto have proved that the streak artifacts in FBP results could be characterized. It indicates that the artifacts created by FBP method have specific and similar characteristics in a stationary limited-angle scanning configuration. Based on this understanding, this work aims at developing a method to extract and suppress specific artifacts of FBP reconstructions for limited-angle tomography. A data-driven learning-based method is proposed based on a deep convolutional neural network. An end-to-end mapping between the FBP and artifact-free images is learned and the implicit features involving artifacts will be extracted and suppressed via nonlinear mapping. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations of experimental results indicate that the proposed method show a stable and prospective performance on artifacts reduction and detail recovery for limited angle tomography. The presented strategy provides a simple and efficient approach for improving image quality of the reconstruction results from limited projection data.

Probing dark particles indirectly at the CEPC

When dark matter candidate and its parent particles are nearly degenerate, it would be difficult to probe them at the Large Hadron Collider directly. We propose to explore their quantum loop effects at the CEPC through the golden channel process $e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-$. We use a renormalizable toy model consisting of a new scalar and a fermion to describe new physics beyond the Standard Model. The new scalar and fermion are general multiplets of the $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ symmetry, and couple to the muon lepton through Yukawa interaction. We calculate their loop contributions to anomalous $γμ^+μ^-$ and $Zμ^+μ^-$ couplings which can be applied to many new physics models. The prospects of their effects at the CEPC are also examined assuming a 0.002 accuracy in the cross section measurement.

The Diphoton Excess, Low Energy Theorem and the 331 Model

We interpret the diphoton anomaly as a heavy scalar $H_3$ in the so-called 331 model. The scalar is responsible for breaking the $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry down to the standard model electroweak gauge group. It mainly couples to the standard model gluons and photons through quantum loops involving heavy quarks and leptons. Those quarks and leptons, in together with the SM quarks and leptons, form the fundamental representation of the 331 model. We use low energy theorem to calculate effective coupling of $H_3gg$, $H_3γγ$, $H_3ZZ$, $H_3WW$ and $H_3Zγ$. The analytical results can be applied to new physics models satisfying the low energy theorem. We show that the heavy quark and lepton contribution cannot produce enough diphoton pairs. It is crucial to include the contribution of charged scalars to explain the diphoton excess. The extra neutral $Z^\prime$ boson could also explain the 2 TeV diboson excess observed at the LHC Run-I.

One Bump or Two Peaks? The 750 GeV Diphoton Excess and Dark Matter with a Complex Mediator

We consider the possibility that the recently observed excess in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum around 750 GeV is due to two narrow scalars. We demonstrate that there is no need to introduce invisible decay modes to enlarge the widths as long as the two scalars exhibit an appropriate mass splitting. Nevertheless we investigate the possible connection of these two scalars to the dark matter in a toy model with a Majorana fermionic dark matter candidate. We explore how large the widths of the two scalar widths could be taking into account various constraints from collider and dark matter experiments. Introducing two scalars alleviates the tension between the diphoton production and dark matter constraints.

Quantitative Study on Exact Reconstruction Sampling Condition in Limited-view CT

In limited-view computed tomography reconstruction, iterative image reconstruction with sparsity-exploiting methods, such as total variation (TV) minimization, inspired by compressive sensing, potentially claims large reductions in sampling requirements. However, a quantitative notion of this claim is non-trivial because of the ill-defined reduction in sampling achieved by the sparsity-exploiting method. In this paper, exact reconstruction sampling condition for limited-view problem is studied by verifying the uniqueness of solution in TV minimization model. Uniqueness is tested by solving a convex optimization problem derived from the sufficient and necessary condition of solution uniqueness. Through this method, the sufficient sampling number of exact reconstruction is quantified for any fixed phantom and settled geometrical parameter in the limited-view problem. This paper provides a reference to quantify the sampling condition. Using Shepp-Logan phantom as an example, the experiment results show the quantified sampling number and indicate that an object would be accurately reconstructed as the scanning range becomes narrower by increasing sampling number. The increased samplings compensate for the deficiency of the projection angle. However, a lower bound of the scanning range is presented, in which an exact reconstruction cannot be obtained once the projection angle is narrowed to this extent no matter how to increase sampling.

A Boost Test of Anomalous Diphoton Resonance at the LHC

The recently observed diphoton resonance around 750~GeV at the LHC Run-2 could be interpreted as a weak singlet scalar. The scalar might also decay into a pair of $Z$-boson and photon. The $Z$-boson is highly boosted and appears as a fat jet in the detector. We use the jet substructure method to explore the possibility of discovering the singlet scalar in the process of $pp\to S\to Zγ$ in the future LHC experiment.

Determining $V_{tb}$ at Electron-Positron Colliders

Verifying $V_{tb} \simeq 1$ is critical to test the three generation assumption of the Standard Model. So far our best knowledge of $V_{tb}$ is inferred either from the $3\times 3$ unitarity of CKM matrix or from single top-quark productions upon the assumption of universal weak couplings. The unitarity could be relaxed in new physics models with extra heavy quarks and the universality of weak couplings could also be broken if the $Wtb$ coupling is modified in new physics models. In this work we propose to measure $V_{tb}$ in the process of $e^+ e^- \to t\bar{t}$ without prior knowledge of the number of fermion generations or the strength of the $Wtb$ coupling. Using an effective Lagrangian approach, we perform a model-independent analysis of the interactions among electroweak gauge bosons and the third generation quarks, i.e. the $Wtb$, $Zt\bar{t}$ and $Zb\bar{b}$ couplings. The electroweak symmetry of the Standard Model specifies a pattern of deviations of the $Z$-$t_L$-$t_L$ and $W$-$t_L$-$b_L$ couplings after one imposes the known experimental constraint on the $Z$-$b_L$-$b_L$ coupling. We demonstrate that, making use of the predicted pattern and the accurate measurements of top-quark mass and width from the energy threshold scan experiments, one can determine $V_{tb}$ from the cross section and the forward-backward asymmetry of top-quark pair production at an {\it unpolarized} electron-positron collider.

Simple non-Abelian extensions of the standard model gauge group and the diboson excesses at the LHC

The ATLAS collaboration reported excesses at around 2 TeV in the di-boson production decaying into hadronic final states. We consider the possibility of explaining the excesses with extra gauge bosons in two simple non-Abelian extensions of the Standard Model. One is the so-called $G(221)$ models with a symmetry structure of $SU(2)_1\otimes SU(2)_2\otimes U(1)_X$ and the other is the $G(331)$ models with an extended symmetry of $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$. The $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of symmetry breaking in the $G(221)$ models are considered in this work: one is $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_2 \otimes U(1)_X \to SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$, the other is $SU(2)_1\otimes SU(2)_2 \otimes U(1)_Y \to SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$. The symmetry breaking of the $G(331)$ model is $SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X \to SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$. We perform a global analysis of $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ phenomenology in ten new physics models, including all the channels of $W^\prime/Z^\prime$ decay. Our study shows that the leptonic mode and the dijet mode of $W^\prime/Z^\prime$ decays impose a very stringent bound on the parameter space in several new physics models. Such tight bounds provide a useful guide for building new physics models to address on the diboson anomalies. We also note that the Left-Right and Lepton-Phobic models can explain the $3.4σ$ $WZ$ excess if the $2.6σ$ deviation in the $W^+W^-$ pair around 2~TeV were confirmed to be a fluctuation of the SM backgrounds.

Resolving the Degeneracy in Single Higgs Production with Higgs Pair Production

The Higgs boson production can be affected by several anomalous couplings, e.g. $c_t$ and $c_g$ anomalous couplings. Precise measurement of $gg\to h$ production yields two degenerate parameter spaces of $c_t$ and $c_g$; one parameter space exhibits the SM limit while the other does not. Such a degeneracy could be resolved by Higgs boson pair production. In this work we adapt the strategy suggested by the ATLAS collaboration to explore the potential of distinguishing the degeneracy at the 14 TeV LHC. If the $c_t$ anomalous coupling is induced only by the operator $H^†H \bar Q_L \tilde{H} t_R$, then the non-SM-like band could be excluded with an integrated luminosity of $\sim 235~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. Making use of the fact that the Higgs boson pair is mainly produced through an $s$-wave scattering, we propose an analytical function to describe the fraction of signal events surviving a series of experimental cuts for a given invariant mass of Higgs boson pair. The function is model independent and can be applied to estimate the discovery potential of various NP models.

Many-Anyons Wavefunction, State Capacity and Gentile Statistics

The many-anyons wavefunction is constructed via the superposition of all the permutations on the direct product of single anyon states and its interchange properties are examined. The phase of permutation is not a representation but the word metric of the permutation group . Amazingly the interchange phase yields a finite capacity of one quantum state interpolating between Fermion and Boson and the mutual exchange phase has no explicit effect on statistics. Finite capacity of quantum state is defined as Gentile statistics and it is different from the fractional exclusion statistics. Some discussion on the general model is also given.

Quantum Correlations are Tightly Bound by the Exclusivity Principle

It is a fundamental problem in physics of what principle limits the correlations as predicted by our current description of nature, based on quantum mechanics. One possible explanation is the "global exclusivity" principle recently discussed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 060402 (2013). In this work we show that this principle actually has a much stronger restriction on the probability distribution. We provide a tight constraint inequality imposed by this principle and prove that this principle singles out quantum correlations in scenarios represented by any graph. Our result implies that the exclusivity principle might be one of the fundamental principles of nature.

Preserving Entanglement of Flying Qubits in Optical Fibers by Dynamical Decoupling

We theoretically investigate the influence of dynamical decoupling sequence in preserving entanglement of polarized photons in polarization-maintaining birefringent fibers(PMF) under a classic Gauss 1/f noise. We study the dynamic evolution of entanglement along the control sequence embedded fibers. Decoherence due to dispersion of polarization mode in PMF can be dramatically depressed, even for a wild optical width. Entanglement degree can be effectively preserved while the control pulse is implemented.

Condition for Energy Efficient Watermarking with Random Vector Model without WSS Assumption

Energy efficient watermarking preserves the watermark energy after linear attack as much as possible. We consider in this letter non-stationary signal models and derive conditions for energy efficient watermarking under random vector model without WSS assumption. We find that the covariance matrix of the energy efficient watermark should be proportional to host covariance matrix to best resist the optimal linear removal attacks. In WSS process our result reduces to the well known power spectrum condition. Intuitive geometric interpretation of the results are also discussed which in turn also provide more simpler proof of the main results.
