Thermal rectification effect of an interacting quantum dot

We investigate nonlinear thermal transport properties of a single interacting quantum dot with two energy levels tunnel-coupled to two electrodes using nonequilibrium Green function method and Hartree-Fock decoupling approximation. In the case of asymmetric tunnel-couplings to two electrodes, for example, when the upper level of the quantum dot is open for transport, whereas the lower level is blocked, our calculations predict a strong asymmetry for the heat (energy) current, which shows that, the quantum dot system may act as a thermal rectifier in this specific situation.

Robust negative differential conductance and enhanced shot noise in transport through a molecular transistor with vibration assistance

In this paper, we analyze vibration-assisted sequential tunneling (including current-voltage characteristics and zero-frequency shot noise) through a molecular quantum dot with two electronic orbitals asymmetrically coupled to the internal vibration. We employ rate equations for the case of equilibrated phonons, and strong Coulomb blockade. We find that a system with a strongly phonon-coupled ground state orbital and weakly phonon-coupled excited state orbital exhibits strong negative differential conductance; and it also shows super-Poissonian current noise. We discuss in detail the reasons and conditions for the appearance of negative differential conductance.

First-order coherent resonant tunneling through an interacting coupled-quantum-dot interferometer: generic quantum rate equations and current noise

We carry out a detailed analysis of coherent resonant tunneling through two coupled quantum dots (CQD) in a parallel arrangement in the weak tunneling limit. We establish a set of quantum rate equations (QREs) in terms of the eigenstate-representation by means of a generic quantum Langevin equation approach, which is valid for arbitrary bias-voltage, temperature, and interdot hopping strength. Based on linear-response theory, we further derive the current and frequency-independent shot noise formulae. Our results reveal that a previously used formula for evaluating Schottky-type noise of a "classical" single-electron transistor is a direct result of linear-response theory, and it remains applicable for small quantum devices with internal coupling. Our numerical calculations show some interesting transport features (i) for a series-CQD: the appearance of a NDC due to the bias-voltage-induced shifting of bare levels or a finite interdot Coulomb repulsion, and (ii) for a parallel CQD in strong interdot Coulomb repulsion regime: finite-bias-induced AB oscillations of current, and magnetic-flux-controllable negative differential conductance and a huge Fano factor.

Phonon-assisted resonant tunneling through a triple-quantum-dot: a phonon-signal detector

We study the effect of electron-phonon interaction on current and zero-frequency shot noise in resonant tunneling through a series triple-quantum-dot coupling to a local phonon mode by means of a nonperturbative mapping technique along with the Green function formulation. By fixing the energy difference between the first two quantum dots to be equal to phonon frequency and sweeping the level of the third quantum dot, we find a largely enhanced current spectrum due to phonon effect, and in particular we predict current peaks corresponding to phonon-absorption and -emission assisted resonant tunneling processes, which shows that this system can be acted as a sensitive phonon-signal detector or as a cascade phonon generator.

Ac-cotunneling through an interacting quantum dot under a magnetic field

We analyze inelastic cotunneling through an interacting quantum dot subject to an ambient magnetic field in the weak tunneling regime under a non-adiabatic time-dependent bias-voltage. Our results clearly exhibit photon-assisted satellites and an overall suppression of differential conductance with increasing driving amplitude, which is consistent with experiments. We also predict a zero-anomaly in differential conductance under an appropriate driving frequency.

Vibration-mediated resonant tunneling and shot noise through a molecular quantum dot

Motivated by a recent experiment on nonlinear tunneling in a suspended Carbon nanotube connected to two normal electrodes [S. Sapmaz, {\it et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 26801 (2006)], we investigate nonequilibrium vibration-mediated sequential tunneling through a molecular quantum dot with two electronic orbitals asymmetrically coupled to two electrodes and strongly interacting with an internal vibrational mode, which is itself weakly coupled to a dissipative phonon bath. For this purpose, we establish rate equations using a generic quantum Langevin equation approach. Based on these equations, we study in detail the current-voltage characteristics and zero-frequency shot noise, paying special attention to the advanced or postponed of the appearance of negative differential conductance and super-Poissonian current noise resulting from electron-phonon-coupling induced {\em selective unidirectional cascades of single-electron transitions}.

Elimination of negative differential conductance in an asymmetric molecular transistor by an ac-voltage

We analyze resonant tunneling subject to a non-adiabatic time-dependent bias-voltage through an asymmetric single molecular quantum dot with coupling between the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom using a {\em Tien-Gordon-type} rate equation. Our results clearly exhibit the appearance of photon-assisted satellites in the current-voltage characteristics and the elimination of hot-phonon-induced negative differential conductance with increasing ac driving amplitude for an asymmetric system. This can be ascribed to an {\em ac-induced suppression} of unequilibrated (hot) phonons in an asymmetric system.

Spin-orbit coupling effect on the persistent currents in mesoscopic ring with an Anderson impurity

Based on the finite $U$ slave boson method, we have investigated the effect of Rashba spin-orbit(SO) coupling on the persistent charge and spin currents in mesoscopic ring with an Anderson impurity. It is shown that the Kondo effect will decrease the magnitude of the persistent charge and spin currents in this side-coupled Anderson impurity case. In the presence of SO coupling, the persistent currents change drastically and oscillate with the strength of SO coupling. The SO coupling will suppress the Kondo effect and restore the abrupt jumps of the persistent currents. It is also found that a persistent spin current circulating the ring can exist even without the charge current in this system.

Controlling inelastic cotunneling through an interacting quantum dot by a circularly-polarized field

We study inelastic cotunneling through a strong Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot subject to a static magnetic field and a perpendicular circularly-polarized magnetic field using a quantum Langevin equation approach. Our calculation predicts an interesting controllable cotunneling current characteristic, splitting--zero-anomaly--splitting transition of the differential conductance with increasing the driving frequency, ascribing to the role of {\em photon-assisted spin-flip} cotunneling processes.

Magnetic-flux-controlled giant Fano factor for the coherent tunneling through a parallel double-quantum-dot

We report our studies of zero-frequency shot noise in tunneling through a parallel-coupled quantum dot interferometer by employing number-resolved quantum rate equations. We show that the combination of quantum interference effect between two pathways and strong Coulomb repulsion could result in a giant Fano factor, which is controllable by tuning the enclosed magnetic flux.

Inelatic cotunneling current and shot noise of an interacting quantum dot with ferromagnetic correlations

We explore inelastic cotunneling through a strongly Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot attached to two ferromagnetic leads in the weak coupling limit using a generic quantum Langevin equation approach. We first develop a Bloch-type equation microscopically to describe the cotunneling-induced spin relaxation dynamics, and then develop explicit analytical expressions for the local magnetization, current, and its fluctuations. On this basis, we predict a novel zero-bias anomaly of the differential conductance in the absence of a magnetic field for the anti-parallel configuration, and asymmetric peak splitting in a magnetic field. Also, for the same system with large polarization, we find a negative zero-frequency differential shot noise in the low positive bias-voltage region. All these effects are ascribed to rapid spin-reversal due to underlying spin-flip cotunneling.

Qubit measurement using a quantum point contact with a quantum Langevin equation approach

We employ a quantum Langevin equation approach to establish non-Markovian dynamical equations, on a fully microscopic basis, to investigate the measurement of the state of a coupled quantum dot qubit by a nearby quantum point contact. The ensuing Bloch equations allow us to examine qubit relaxation and decoherence induced by measurement, and also the noise spectrum of meter output current with the help of a quantum regression theorem, at arbitrary bias-voltage and temperature. Our analyses provide a clear resolution of a recent debate concerning the occurrence of a quantum oscillation peak in the noise spectrum.

Inelastic cotunneling induced decoherence and relaxation, charge and spin currents in an interacting quantum dot under a magnetic field

We present a theoretical analysis of several aspects of nonequilibirum cotunneling through a strong Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot (QD) subject to a finite magnetic field in the weak coupling limit. We carry this out by developing a generic quantum Heisenberg-Langevin equation approach leading to a set of Bloch dynamical equations which describe the nonequilibrium cotunneling in a convenient and compact way. These equations describe the time evolution of the spin variables of the QD explicitly in terms of the response and correlation functions of the free reservoir variables. This scheme not only provides analytical expressions for the relaxation and decoherence of the localized spin induced by cotunneling, but it also facilitates evaluations of the nonequilibrium magnetization, the charge current, and the spin current at arbitrary bias-voltage, magnetic field, and temperature. We find that all cotunneling events produce decoherence, but relaxation stems only from {\em inelastic} spin-flip cotunneling processes. Moreover, our specific calculations show that cotunneling processes involving electron transfer (both spin-flip and non-spin-flip) contribute to charge current, while spin-flip cotunneling processes are required to produce a net spin current in the asymmetric coupling case. We also point out that under the influence of a nonzero magnetic field, spin-flip cotunneling is an energy-consuming process requiring a sufficiently strong external bias-voltage for activation, explaining the behavior of differential conductance at low temperature: in particular, the splitting of the zero-bias anomaly in the charge current and a broad zero-magnitude "window" of differential conductance for the spin current near zero-bias-voltage.

Super-Poissonian shot noise in the resonant tunneling due to coupling with a localized level

We report our studies of the shot noise spectrum in tunneling through an interacting quantum dot when an additional single-level quantum dot without tunnel coupling to leads is coherently side-connected to it. We show that the zero-frequency shot noise could reach a super-Poissonian value for appropriate ratios between dot-dot hoppings and dot-lead couplings, but the current is independent on the hopping. Moreover, the frequency spectrum of shot noise shows an obvious peak at the Rabi frequency, which is controllable by tuning the dot-lead couplings.

Pumped spin-current and shot noise spectra in a single quantum dot

We exploit the pumped spin-current and current noise spectra under equilibrium condition in a single quantum dot connected to two normal leads, as an electrical scheme for detection of the electron spin resonance (ESR) and decoherence. We propose spin-resolved quantum rate equations with correlation functions in Laplace-space for the analytical derivation of the zero-frequency atuo- and cross-shot noise spectra of charge- and spin-current. Our results show that in the strong Coulomb blockade regime, ESR-induced spin flip generates a finite spin-current and the quantum partition noises in the absence of net charge transport. Moreover, spin shot noise is closely related to the magnetic Rabi frequency and decoherence and would be a sensitive tool to measure them.

Mesoscopic Kondo effect of a quantum dot embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm ring with intradot spin-flip scattering

We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot embedded in a mesoscopic ring taking into account intradot spin-flip scattering $R$. Based on the finite-$U$ slave-boson mean-field approach, we find that the Kondo peak in the density of states is split into two peaks by this coherent spin-flip transition, which is responsible for some interesting features of the Kondo-assisted persistent current circulating the ring: (1) strong suppression and crossover to a sine function form with increasing $R$; (2) appearance of a "hump" in the $R$-dependent behavior for odd parity. $R$-induced reverse of the persistent current direction is also observed for odd parity.

Theoretical investigations for shot noise in correlated resonant tunneling through a quantum coupled system

In this paper, we carry out a theoretical analysis of the zero-frequency and finite-frequency shot noise in electron tunneling through a two-level interacting system connected to two leads, when a coherent coupling between the two levels is present, by means of recently developed bias-voltage and temperature dependent quantum rate equations. For this purpose, we generalize the traditional generation-recombination approach for shot noise of two-terminal tunneling devices properly to take into account the coherent superposition of different electronic states (quantum effects). As applications, analytical and numerical investigations have been given in detail for two cases: (1) electron tunneling through a quantum dot connected to ferromagnetic leads with intradot spin-flip scattering, and (2) spinless fermions tunneling through seriesly coupled quantum dots, focusing on the shot noise as functions of bias-voltage and frequency.

Shot noise of inelastic tunneling through quantum dot systems

We present a theoretical analysis of the effect of inelastic electron scattering on current and its fluctuations in a mesoscopic quantum dot (QD) connected to two leads, based on a recently developed nonperturbative technique involving the approximate mapping of the many-body electron-phonon coupling problem onto a multichannel single-electron scattering problem. In this, we apply the Büttiker scattering theory of shot noise for a two-terminal mesoscopic device to the multichannel case with differing weight factors and examine zero-frequency shot noise for two special cases: (i) a single-molecule QD and (ii) coupled semiconductor QDs. The nonequilibrium Green's function method facilitates calculation of single-electron transmission and reflection amplitudes for inelastic processes under nonequilibrium conditions in the mapping model. For the single-molecule QD we find that, in the presence of the electron-phonon interaction, both differential conductance and differential shot noise display additional peaks as bias-voltage increases due to phonon-assisted processes. In the case of coupled QDs, our nonperturbative calculations account for the electron-phonon interaction on an equal footing with couplings to the leads, as well as the coupling between the two dots. Our results exhibit oscillations in both the current and shot noise as functions of the energy difference between the two QDs, resulting from the spontaneous emission of phonons in the nonlinear transport process. In the "zero-phonon" resonant tunneling regime, the shot noise exhibits a double peak, while in the "one-phonon" region, only a single peak appears.
