The transport phenomenon of inertia Brownian particles in a periodic potential with non-Gaussian noise

The transport phenomenon (movement and diffusion) of inertia Brownian particles in a periodic potential with non-Gaussian noise is investigated. It is found that proper noise intensity Q will promote particles directional movement(or diffusion), but large Q will inhibit this phenomenon. For large value of Q, the average velocity V (or the diffusion coefficient D) has a maximum with increasing correlation time tau. But for small value of Q, V (or D) decreases with increasing tau. In some cases, for the same value of Q and the same value of tau, non-Gaussian noise can induce particles directional movement(or diffusion), but Gaussian colored noise can not.

Power domination in regular claw-free graphs

In this paper, we first show that the power domination number of a connected $4$-regular claw-free graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\frac{n+1}{5}$, and the bound is sharp. The statement partly disprove the conjecture presented by Dorbec et al. in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 27:1559-1574, 2013. Then we present a dynamic programming style linear-time algorithm for weighted power domination problem in trees.

Theoretical study of the capture of stable $^{39}$K and neutron-rich radioactive $^{46}$K by $^{181}$Ta

The empirical coupled-channel (ECC) model and the universal fusion function (UFF) prescription are used to analyse the data of capture cross sections for reactions ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta and ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta reported recently by A. Wakhle {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. C 97, 021602(R) (2018)]. The results of the ECC model are in good agreement with the data of ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta while, for ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta, the predictions of the ECC model overestimate the above-barrier capture cross sections. Comparing the reduced data of these two reactions, it is found that the above-barrier cross sections of ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta are consistent with the UFF and are larger than those of ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta. This implies that the capture cross sections of ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta are suppressed at energies above the Coulomb barrier. Furthermore, at sub-barrier energies, the reduced calculated capture cross sections of ${}^{39}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta are a little larger than those of ${}^{46}$K$+{}^{181}$Ta, which is owing to the coupling to the positive $Q$-value two-neutron transfer channel.

Two-sided-loop jets associated with magnetic reconnection between emerging loops and twisted filament threads

Coronal jets are always produced by magnetic reconnection between emerging flux and pre-existing overlying magnetic fields. When the overlying field is vertical/obilique or horizontal, the coronal jet will appear as anemone type or two-sided-loop type. Most of observational jets are of the anemone type, and only a few of two-sided-loop jets have been reported. Using the high-quality data from New Vacuum Solar Telescope, Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph, and Solar Dynamics Observatory, we present an example of two-sided-loop jets simultaneously observed in the chromosphere, transition region, and corona. The continuous emergence of magnetic flux brought in successively emerging of coronal loops and the slowly rising of an overlying horizontal filament threads. Sequentially, there appeared the deformation of the loops, the plasmoids ejection from the loop top, and pairs of loop brightenings and jet moving along the untwisting filament threads. All the observational results indicate there exist magnetic reconnection between the emerging loops and overlying horizontal filament threads, and it is the first example of two-sided-loop jets associated with ejected plasmoids and twisted overlying fields.

Formation of Large Scale Coronal Loops Interconnecting Two Active Regions Through Gradual Magnetic Reconnection and Associated Heating Process

Coronal loops interconnecting two active regions, called as interconnecting loops (ILs), are prominent large-scale structures in the solar atmosphere. They carry a significant amount of magnetic flux, therefore are considered to be an important element of the solar dynamo process. Earlier observations show that eruptions of ILs are an important source of CMEs. It is generally believed that ILs are formed through magnetic reconnection in the high corona (>150-200"), and several scenarios have been proposed to explain their brightening in soft X-rays (SXRs). Yet, the detailed IL formation process has not been fully explored and the associated energy release in the corona still remains unresolved. Here we report the complete formation process of a set of ILs connecting two nearby active regions, with successive observations by STEREO-A on the far side of the Sun and SDO and Hinode on the Earth side. We conclude that ILs are formed by gradual reconnection high in the corona, in line with earlier postulations. In addition, we show evidence supporting that ILs become brightened in SXRs and EUVs through heating at or close to the reconnection site in the corona (i.e., through direct heating process of reconnection), a process that has been largely overlooked in earlier studies on ILs

An extreme ultraviolet wave generating upward secondary waves in a streamer-like solar structure

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) waves, spectacular horizontally propagating disturbances in the low solar corona, always trigger horizontal secondary waves (SWs) when they encounter ambient coronal structure. We present a first example of upward SWs in a streamer-like structure after the passing of an EUV wave. The event occurred on 2017 June 1. The EUV wave happened during a typical solar eruption including a filament eruption, a CME, a C6.6 flare. The EUV wave was associated with quasi-periodic fast propagating (QFP) wave trains and a type II radio burst that represented the existence of a coronal shock. The EUV wave had a fast initial velocity of $\sim$1000 km s$^{-1}$, comparable to high speeds of the shock and the QFP wave trains. Intriguingly, upward SWs rose slowly ($\sim$80 km s$^{-1}$) in the streamer-like structure after the sweeping of the EUV wave. The upward SWs seemed to originate from limb brightenings that were caused by the EUV wave. All the results show the EUV wave is a fast-mode magnetohydrodynamic shock wave, likely triggered by the flare impulses. We suggest that part of the EUV wave was probably trapped in the closed magnetic fields of streamer-like structure, and upward SWs possibly resulted from the release of trapped waves in the form of slow-mode. It is believed that an interplay of the strong compression of the coronal shock and the configuration of the streamer-like structure is crucial for the formation of upward SWs.

Epitaxial growth of highly strained antimonene on Ag (111)

The synthesis of antimonene, which is a promising group-V 2D material for both fundamental studies and technological applications, remains highly challenging. Thus far, it has been synthesized only by exfoliation or growth on a few substrates. In this study, we show that thin layers of antimonene can be grown on Ag (111) by molecular beam epitaxy. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy combined with theoretical calculations revealed that the submonolayer Sb deposited on a Ag (111) surface forms a layer of AgSb2 surface alloy upon annealing. Further deposition of Sb on the AgSb2 surface alloy causes an epitaxial layer of Sb to form, which is identified as antimonene with a buckled honeycomb structure. More interestingly, the lattice constant of the epitaxial antimonene (5 Å) is much larger than that of freestanding antimonene, indicating a high tensile strain of more than 20%. This kind of large strain is expected to make the antimonene a highly promising candidate for room-temperature quantum spin Hall material.

Harmonics of Solar Radio Spikes at Metric Wavelengths

This paper presents the latest observations from the newly-built solar radio spectrograph at the \emph{Chashan Solar Observatory}. On July 18 2016, the spectrograph records a solar spike burst event, which has several episodes showing harmonic structures, with the second, third, and fourth harmonics. The lower harmonic radio spike emissions are observed later than the higher harmonic bands, and the temporal delay of the second (third) harmonic relative to the fourth harmonic is about 30\ --\ 40 (10) ms. Based on the electron cyclotron maser emission mechanism, we analyze possible causes of the temporal delay and further infer relevant coronal parameters, such as the magnetic field strength and the electron density at the radio source.

Rigidity of vector valued harmonic maps of linear growth

Consider vector valued harmonic maps of at most linear growth, defined on a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature. For the norm square of the pull-back of the target volume form by such maps, we report a strong maximum principle, and equalities among its supremum, its asymptotic average, and its large-time heat evolution.

Learning Hierarchical Features for Visual Object Tracking with Recursive Neural Networks

Recently, deep learning has achieved very promising results in visual object tracking. Deep neural networks in existing tracking methods require a lot of training data to learn a large number of parameters. However, training data is not sufficient for visual object tracking as annotations of a target object are only available in the first frame of a test sequence. In this paper, we propose to learn hierarchical features for visual object tracking by using tree structure based Recursive Neural Networks (RNN), which have fewer parameters than other deep neural networks, e.g. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). First, we learn RNN parameters to discriminate between the target object and background in the first frame of a test sequence. Tree structure over local patches of an exemplar region is randomly generated by using a bottom-up greedy search strategy. Given the learned RNN parameters, we create two dictionaries regarding target regions and corresponding local patches based on the learned hierarchical features from both top and leaf nodes of multiple random trees. In each of the subsequent frames, we conduct sparse dictionary coding on all candidates to select the best candidate as the new target location. In addition, we online update two dictionaries to handle appearance changes of target objects. Experimental results demonstrate that our feature learning algorithm can significantly improve tracking performance on benchmark datasets.

The Subspace Voyager: Exploring High-Dimensional Data along a Continuum of Salient 3D Subspaces

Analyzing high-dimensional data and finding hidden patterns is a difficult problem and has attracted numerous research efforts. Automated methods can be useful to some extent but bringing the data analyst into the loop via interactive visual tools can help the discovery process tremendously. An inherent problem in this effort is that humans lack the mental capacity to truly understand spaces exceeding three spatial dimensions. To keep within this limitation, we describe a framework that decomposes a high-dimensional data space into a continuum of generalized 3D subspaces. Analysts can then explore these 3D subspaces individually via the familiar trackball interface, but using additional facilities to smoothly transition to adjacent subspaces for expanded space comprehension. Since the number of such subspaces suffers from combinatorial explosion, we provide a set of data-driven subspace selection and navigation tools which can guide users to interesting subspaces and views. A subspace trail map allows users to manage the explored subspaces, and also helps them navigate within and across any higher-dimensional subspaces identified by clustering. Both trackball and trail map are each embedded into a word cloud of attribute labels, sized according to the relevance of the associated data dimensions in the currently selected subspace. Finally, a view gallery helps users keep their bearings and return to interesting subspaces and views. We demonstrate our system via several use cases in a diverse set of application areas, such as cluster analysis and refinement, information discovery, and supervised training of classifiers.

Tungsten disulfide-gold nanohole hybrid metasurfaces for nonlinear metalens in the visible region

Recently, nonlinear hybrid metasurface comes into an attractive new concept in the research of nanophotonics and nanotechnology. It is composed of semiconductors with an intrinsically large nonlinear susceptibility and traditional plasmonic metasurfaces, offering opportunities for efficiently generating and manipulating nonlinear optical responses. A high second-harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency has been demonstrated in the mid-infrared region by using multi-quantum-well (MQW) based plasmonic metasurfaces. However, it has yet to be demonstrated in the visible region. Here we present a new type of nonlinear hybrid metasurfaces for the visible region, which consists of a single layer of tungsten disulfide (WS2) and a phased gold nanohole array. The results indicate that a large SHG susceptibility of ~0.1 nm/V at 810 nm is achieved, which is 2~3 orders of magnitude larger than that of typical plasmonic metasurfaces. Nonlinear metalenses with the focal lengths of 30 μm, 50 μm and 100 μm are demonstrated experimentally, providing a direct evidence for both generating and manipulating SH signals based on the nonlinear hybrid metasurfaces. It shows great potential applications in designing of integrated, ultra-thin, compacted and efficient nonlinear optical devices, such as frequency converters, nonlinear holography and generation of nonlinear optical vortex beam.

Joint Calibration of Panoramic Camera and Lidar Based on Supervised Learning

In view of contemporary panoramic camera-laser scanner system, the traditional calibration method is not suitable for panoramic cameras whose imaging model is extremely nonlinear. The method based on statistical optimization has the disadvantage that the requirement of the number of laser scanner's channels is relatively high. Calibration equipments with extreme accuracy for panoramic camera-laser scanner system are costly. Facing all these in the calibration of panoramic camera-laser scanner system, a method based on supervised learning is proposed. Firstly, corresponding feature points of panoramic images and point clouds are gained to generate the training dataset by designing a round calibration object. Furthermore, the traditional calibration problem is transformed into a multiple nonlinear regression optimization problem by designing a supervised learning network with preprocessing of the panoramic imaging model. Back propagation algorithm is utilized to regress the rotation and translation matrix with high accuracy. Experimental results show that this method can quickly regress the calibration parameters and the accuracy is better than the traditional calibration method and the method based on statistical optimization. The calibration accuracy of this method is really high, and it is more highly-automated.

dbMPIKT: A web resource for the kinetic and thermodynamic database of mutant protein interactions

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) perform important roles on biological functions. Researches of mutants on protein interactions can further understand PPIs. In the past, many researchers have developed databases that stored mutants on protein interactions, which are old and not updated till now. To address the issue, we developed a kinetic and thermodynamic database of mutant protein interactions (dbMPIKT) that can be freely accessible at our website. This database contains 5291 mutants that integrated data from previous databases and data from literatures for nearly three years. Furthermore, the data were analyzed, involving mutation number, mutation type, protein pair source and network map construction. On the whole, the database provides new data to further improve the study on PPIs. Website: http://210.45.212.128/lqy/index.php

An incremental-stencil WENO reconstruction for simulation of compressible two-phase flows

An incremental-stencil WENO reconstruction method, which uses low-order candidate stencils with incrementally increasing width, is proposed for finite-volume simulation of compressible two-phase flow with the quasi-conservative interface model. While recovering the original 5th-order WENO reconstruction in smooth region of the solution, due to the presence of 2-point candidate stencils, the present method is able to handle closely located discontinuities, which is a typical scenario of shock-interface interaction. Furthermore, a MOOD-type positivity preserving approach is applied to ensure physical meaningful reconstruction. Compared with the hybrid method which switches between with the 5th-order WENO and 2nd-order reconstructions, the present method is free of problem-dependent tunable parameters. A number of numerical examples show that the present method achieves small numerical dissipation and good robustness for simulating two-phase flow problems with strong shock-interface interaction and large density ratio.

The local entropy along Ricci flow---Part A: the no-local-collapsing theorems

We localize the entropy functionals of G. Perelman and generalize his no-local-collapsing theorem and pseudo-locality theorem. Our generalization is technically inspired by further development of Li-Yau estimate along the Ricci flow. It can be used to show the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of the Kähler Ricci flow on each minimal projective manifold of general type.

Frequency manipulation of light by photonic gauge potentials

The ability to manipulate the frequency of light is of great importance in both fundamental quantum sciences and practical applications. Traditional method for frequency conversion relies on nonlinear optical processes, which are faced with the obstacles of low efficiency and limited bandwidth. Recent developments of topological photonics introduce the concepts of gauge potentials and magnetic fields to the realm of photons. Here, we demonstrate versatile frequency manipulation of light via photonic gauge potentials in a fiber-optic communication system. The gauge potential of frequency dimension is realized by controlling the initial phase of electro-optic phase modulation. A maximum 50 GHz frequency shift and three-fold bandwidth expansion for frequency combs are achieved by choosing different gauge potentials. By adopting two cascaded phase modulators with different gauge potentials, we also realize "negative refraction" for frequency combs and frequency "perfect imaging"for arbitrarily input spectra. These results may pave the way towards versatile frequency management in quantum optics and classical optical communications.

Double Coronal X-ray and Microwave Sources Associated With A Magnetic Breakout Solar Eruption

Double coronal hard X-ray (HXR) sources are believed to be critical observational evidence of bi-directional energy release through magnetic reconnection in a large-scale current sheet in solar ares. Here we present a study on double coronal sources observed in both HXR and microwave regimes, revealing new characteristics distinct from earlier reports. This event is associated with a footpoint-occulted X1.3-class flare (25 April 2014, starting at 00:17 UT) and a coronal mass ejection that are likely triggered by the magnetic breakout process, with the lower source extending upward from the top of the partially-occulted flare loops and the upper source co-incident with rapidly squeezing-in side lobes (at a speed of ~250 km/s on both sides). The upper source can be identified at energies as high as 70-100 keV. The X-ray upper source is characterized by flux curves different from the lower source, a weak energy dependence of projected centroid altitude above 20 keV, a shorter duration and a HXR photon spectrum slightly-harder than those of the lower source. In addition, the microwave emission at 34 GHz also exhibits a similar double source structure and the microwave spectra at both sources are in line with gyro-synchrotron emission given by non- thermal energetic electrons. These observations, especially the co-incidence of the very-fast squeezing-in motion of side lobes and the upper source, indicate that the upper source is associated with (possibly caused by) this fast motion of arcades. This sheds new lights on the origin of the corona double-source structure observed in both HXRs and microwaves.
