Deep-learning based numerical BSDE method for barrier options

As is known, an option price is a solution to a certain partial differential equation (PDE) with terminal conditions (payoff functions). There is a close association between the solution of PDE and the solution of a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). We can either solve the PDE to obtain option prices or solve its associated BSDE. Recently a deep learning technique has been applied to solve option prices using the BSDE approach. In this approach, deep learning is used to learn some deterministic functions, which are used in solving the BSDE with terminal conditions. In this paper, we extend the deep-learning technique to solve a PDE with both terminal and boundary conditions. In particular, we will employ the technique to solve barrier options using Brownian motion bridges.

3D Graph Convolutional Networks with Temporal Graphs: A Spatial Information Free Framework For Traffic Forecasting

Spatio-temporal prediction plays an important role in many application areas especially in traffic domain. However, due to complicated spatio-temporal dependency and high non-linear dynamics in road networks, traffic prediction task is still challenging. Existing works either exhibit heavy training cost or fail to accurately capture the spatio-temporal patterns, also ignore the correlation between distant roads that share the similar patterns. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework to overcome these issues: 3D Temporal Graph Convolutional Networks (3D-TGCN). Two novel components of our model are introduced. (1) Instead of constructing the road graph based on spatial information, we learn it by comparing the similarity between time series for each road, thus providing a spatial information free framework. (2) We propose an original 3D graph convolution model to model the spatio-temporal data more accurately. Empirical results show that 3D-TGCN could outperform state-of-the-art baselines.

Tangent-Normal Adversarial Regularization for Semi-supervised Learning

Compared with standard supervised learning, the key difficulty in semi-supervised learning is how to make full use of the unlabeled data. A recently proposed method, virtual adversarial training (VAT), smartly performs adversarial training without label information to impose a local smoothness on the classifier, which is especially beneficial to semi-supervised learning. In this work, we propose tangent-normal adversarial regularization (TNAR) as an extension of VAT by taking the data manifold into consideration. The proposed TNAR is composed by two complementary parts, the tangent adversarial regularization (TAR) and the normal adversarial regularization (NAR). In TAR, VAT is applied along the tangent space of the data manifold, aiming to enforce local invariance of the classifier on the manifold, while in NAR, VAT is performed on the normal space orthogonal to the tangent space, intending to impose robustness on the classifier against the noise causing the observed data deviating from the underlying data manifold. Demonstrated by experiments on both artificial and practical datasets, our proposed TAR and NAR complement with each other, and jointly outperforms other state-of-the-art methods for semi-supervised learning.

Spatio-Temporal Graph Convolutional Networks: A Deep Learning Framework for Traffic Forecasting

Timely accurate traffic forecast is crucial for urban traffic control and guidance. Due to the high nonlinearity and complexity of traffic flow, traditional methods cannot satisfy the requirements of mid-and-long term prediction tasks and often neglect spatial and temporal dependencies. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning framework, Spatio-Temporal Graph Convolutional Networks (STGCN), to tackle the time series prediction problem in traffic domain. Instead of applying regular convolutional and recurrent units, we formulate the problem on graphs and build the model with complete convolutional structures, which enable much faster training speed with fewer parameters. Experiments show that our model STGCN effectively captures comprehensive spatio-temporal correlations through modeling multi-scale traffic networks and consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on various real-world traffic datasets.

Load Balanced GANs for Multi-view Face Image Synthesis

Multi-view face synthesis from a single image is an ill-posed problem and often suffers from serious appearance distortion. Producing photo-realistic and identity preserving multi-view results is still a not well defined synthesis problem. This paper proposes Load Balanced Generative Adversarial Networks (LB-GAN) to precisely rotate the yaw angle of an input face image to any specified angle. LB-GAN decomposes the challenging synthesis problem into two well constrained subtasks that correspond to a face normalizer and a face editor respectively. The normalizer first frontalizes an input image, and then the editor rotates the frontalized image to a desired pose guided by a remote code. In order to generate photo-realistic local details, the normalizer and the editor are trained in a two-stage manner and regulated by a conditional self-cycle loss and an attention based L2 loss. Exhaustive experiments on controlled and uncontrolled environments demonstrate that the proposed method not only improves the visual realism of multi-view synthetic images, but also preserves identity information well.

The Deep Ritz method: A deep learning-based numerical algorithm for solving variational problems

We propose a deep learning based method, the Deep Ritz Method, for numerically solving variational problems, particularly the ones that arise from partial differential equations. The Deep Ritz method is naturally nonlinear, naturally adaptive and has the potential to work in rather high dimensions. The framework is quite simple and fits well with the stochastic gradient descent method used in deep learning. We illustrate the method on several problems including some eigenvalue problems.

Super quantum discord for general two qubit X states

The exact solutions of the super quantum discord are derived for general two qubit X states in terms of a one-variable function. Several exact solutions of the super quantum discord are given for the general X-state over nontrivial regions of a seven dimensional manifold. It is shown that the super quantum discord of the X state may increase or decreases under the phase damping channel.

Quantum discord of X-states as optimization of one variable function

We solve the quantum discord completely as an optimization of certain one variable function for arbitrary two qubit X state. Exact solutions of the quantum discord are obtained for several nontrivial regions of the five parametric space for the quantum state. Exceptional solutions are determined via an iterative algorithm.

Smartphone microendoscopy for high resolution fluorescence imaging

High resolution optical endoscopes are increasingly used in diagnosis of various medical conditions of internal organs, such as the gastrointestinal tracts, but they are too expensive for use in resource-poor settings. On the other hand, smartphones with high resolution cameras and Internet access have become more affordable, enabling them to diffuse into most rural areas and developing countries in the past decade. In this letter we describe a smartphone microendoscope that can take fluorescence images with a spatial resolution of 3.1 μm. Images collected from ex vivo, in vitro and in vivo samples using the device are also presented. The compact and cost-effective smartphone microendoscope may be envisaged as a powerful tool for detecting pre-cancerous lesions of internal organs in low and middle income countries.
