Instance Map based Image Synthesis with a Denoising Generative Adversarial Network

Semantic layouts based Image synthesizing, which has benefited from the success of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), has drawn much attention in these days. How to enhance the synthesis image equality while keeping the stochasticity of the GAN is still a challenge. We propose a novel denoising framework to handle this problem. The overlapped objects generation is another challenging task when synthesizing images from a semantic layout to a realistic RGB photo. To overcome this deficiency, we include a one-hot semantic label map to force the generator paying more attention on the overlapped objects generation. Furthermore, we improve the loss function of the discriminator by considering perturb loss and cascade layer loss to guide the generation process. We applied our methods on the Cityscapes, Facades and NYU datasets and demonstrate the image generation ability of our model.

Counterintuitive Reconstruction of the Polar O-Terminated ZnO Surface With Zinc Vacancies and Hydrogen

Understanding the structure of ZnO surface reconstructions and their resultant properties is crucial to the rational design of ZnO-containing devices ranging from optoelectronics to catalysts. Here, we are motivated by recent experimental work which showed a new surface reconstruction containing Zn vacancies ordered in a Zn(3x3) pattern in the subsurface of (0001)-O terminated ZnO. A reconstruction with Zn vacancies on (0001)-O is surprising and counterintuitive because Zn vacancies enhance the surface dipole rather than reduce it. In this work, we show using Density Functional Theory (DFT) that subsurface Zn vacancies can form on (0001)-O when coupled with adsorption of surface H and are in fact stable under a wide range of common conditions. We also show these vacancies have a significant ordering tendency and that Sb-doping created subsurface inversion domain boundaries (IDBs) enhances the driving force of Zn vacancy alignment into large domains of the Zn(3x3) reconstruction.

Localized state and charge transfer in nitrogen-doped graphene

Nitrogen-doped epitaxial graphene grown on SiC(000?1) was prepared by exposing the surface to an atomic nitrogen flux. Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Spectroscopy (STS), supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the simple substitution of carbon by nitrogen atoms has been identified as the most common doping configuration. High-resolution images reveal a reduction of local charge density on top of the nitrogen atoms, indicating a charge transfer to the neighboring carbon atoms. For the first time, local STS spectra clearly evidenced the energy levels associated with the chemical doping by nitrogen, localized in the conduction band. Various other nitrogen-related defects have been observed. The bias dependence of their topographic signatures demonstrates the presence of structural configurations more complex than substitution as well as hole-doping.
