Observation of dipolar splittings in high-resolution atom-loss spectroscopy of $^6$Li $p$-wave Feshbach resonances

We report on the observation of dipolar splitting in 6Li p-wave Feshbach resonances by highresolution atom-loss spectroscopy. The Feshbach resonances at 159 G and 215 G exhibit a doublet structure of 10 mG and 13 mG, respectively, associated with different projections of the orbital angular momentum. The observed splittings agree very well with coupled-channel calculations. We map out the temperature dependence of the atom-loss spectrum allowing us to extrapolate resonance positions and the corresponding widths to zero temperature. The observed dipolar splitting in fermionic lithium might be useful for the realization of the quantum phase transition between the polar and axial p-wave superfluid phases.

Analyzing a single-laser repumping scheme for efficient loading of a strontium magneto-optical trap

We demonstrate enhanced loading of strontium atoms into a magneto-optical trap using a repumping scheme from the metastable state via the doubly-excited state $5\mathrm{s}5\mathrm{p}\,^3\mathrm{P}_2 \rightarrow 5\mathrm{p}^2\,^3\mathrm{P}_2$ at $481~\mathrm{nm}$. The number of trapped atoms is increased by an order of magnitude. The frequency and intensity dependence of the atom number enhancement, with respect to the non-repumping case, is well reproduced by a simple rate equation model, which also describes single-laser repumping schemes reported previously. The repumping scheme is limited by a weak additional loss channel into the long-lived $5\mathrm{s}5\mathrm{p}\,^3\mathrm{P}_0$ state. For low repumping intensities, the signature of a halo formed by magnetically trapped atoms in the metastable state is found.

Free-space continuous-variable quantum key distribution of unidimensional Gaussian modulation using polarized coherent-states in urban environment

We use single homodyne detector to accomplish Continuous-Variable quantum key distribution(CV QKD) in a laboratory and urban environment free-space channel. This is based on Gaussian modulation with coherent-states in the polarization degree of freedom. We achieved a QKD distance at 460m, at the repetition rate of 10 kHz. We give the security of this protocol against collective attack in the asymptotic regime. The secure key rate is 0.152 kbps at the typical reconciliation efficiency of 0.95. The experiment setup of this scheme is simplified and the difficulty to realize has been remarkably reduced compared to traditional symmetric modulation ones, for example, GG02 protocol. The influence of security key rate brought by asymmetric modulation is small in a relative low channel loss condition in the free-space environment. This scheme is expected to be significance meaning to the future practically utilize.

Mode surgery of LN micro-resonator by femtosecond laser irradiation

Lithium niobate(LN) microresonator is a key component in photonic integrated circuits. An intriguing phenomenon was observed that the quality factor for specific modes of the resonator can be further improved by femtosecond laser irradiation. The high repetition laser pulses scatters into the cavity by forming a defect on the surface and is confined in the edge. A localized coupled laser refining process will then repair the lattice disorders and tiny burrs on the periphery. The intrinsic quality factor of a measured mode can be promoted from 2.17$\times$10$^5$ to 1.84$\times$10$^6$ indicating one order of magnitude improvement. This highly controllable method has its own unique advantages in improving the quality of an integrated resonator which opens new prospects for single component engineering of LN photonic integrated circuits.

On the Duality and File Size Hierarchy of Fractional Repetition Codes

Distributed storage systems that deploy erasure codes can provide better features such as lower storage overhead and higher data reliability. In this paper, we focus on fractional repetition (FR) codes, which are a class of storage codes characterized by the features of uncoded exact repair and minimum repair bandwidth. We study the duality of FR codes, and investigate the relationship between the supported file size of an FR code and its dual code. Based on the established relationship, we derive an improved dual bound on the supported file size of FR codes. We further show that FR codes constructed from $t$-designs are optimal when the size of the stored file is sufficiently large. Moreover, we present the tensor product technique for combining FR codes, and elaborate on the file size hierarchy of resulting codes.

Broadband quasi-phase matching in MgO: PPLN thin film

Future quantum information networks operated on telecom channels require qubit transfer between different wavelengths while preserving quantum coherence and entanglement. Qubit transfer is a nonlinear optical process, but currently the types of atoms used for quantum information processing and storage are limited by the narrow bandwidth of up-conversion available. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of broadband and high-efficiency quasi-phase matching second harmonic generation (SHG) in a chip-scale periodically poled lithium niobate thin film. We achieve large bandwidth of up to 2 THz for SHG by satisfying quasi-phase matching and group-velocity matching simultaneously. Furthermore, by changing film thickness, the central wavelength of quasi-phase matching SHG bandwidth can be modulated from 2.70 um to 1.44 um. The reconfigurable quasi-phase matching lithium niobate thin film provides a significant on-chip integrated platform for photonics and quantum optics.

Bayesian analysis of the break in DAMPE lepton spectra

Recently, DAMPE has released its first results on the high-energy cosmic-ray electrons and positrons (CREs) from about $25$ GeV to $4.6$ TeV, which directly detect a break at $\sim 1$ TeV. This result gives us an excellent opportunity to study the source of the CREs excess. In this work, we used the data fo proton and helium flux (from AMS-02 and CREAM), $\bar{\mathrm{p}}/\mathrm{p}$ ratio (from AMS-02), positron flux (from AMS-02) and CREs flux (from DAMPE without the peak signal point at $\sim 1.4$ TeV) to do global fitting simultaneously, which can account the influence from the propagation model, the nuclei and electron primary source injection and the secondary lepton production precisely. For extra source to interpret the excess in lepton spectrum, we consider two separate scenarios (pulsar and dark matter annihilation via leptonic channels) to construct the bump ($\gtrsim 100$ GeV) and the break at $\sim 1$ TeV. The result shows: (i) in pulsar scenario, the spectral index of the injection should be $ν_{\mathrm{psr}} \sim 0.65$ and the cut-off should be $R_{c} \sim 650$ GV; (ii) in dark matter scenario, the dark matter particle's mass is $m_χ \sim 1208$ GeV and the cross section is $\langle σv \rangle \sim 1.48 \times 10^{-23} \mathrm{cm}^{3} \mathrm{s}^{-1}$. Moreover, in the dark matter scenario, the $τ\barτ$ annihilation channel is highly suppressed, and a DM model is built to satisfy the fitting results.

On the Duality of Fractional Repetition Codes

Erasure codes have emerged as an efficient technology for providing data redundancy in distributed storage systems. However, it is a challenging task to repair the failed storage nodes in erasure-coded storage systems, which requires large quantities of network resources. In this paper, we study fractional repetition (FR) codes, which enable the minimal repair complexity and also minimum repair bandwidth during node repair. We focus on the duality of FR codes, and investigate the relationship between the supported file size of an FR code and its dual code. Furthermore, we present a dual bound on the supported file size of FR codes.

High Resolution Molecular Spectroscopy for Producing Ultracold Absolute Ground-State $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb Molecules

We report a detailed molecular spectroscopy study on the lowest excited electronic states of $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ for producing ultracold $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules in the electronic, rovibrational and hyperfine ground state. Starting from weakly-bound Feshbach molecules, a series of vibrational levels of the $A^{1}Σ^{+}-b^{3}Π$ coupled excited states were investigated. After resolving, modeling and interpreting the hyperfine structure of several lines, we successfully identified a long-lived level resulting from the accidental hyperfine coupling between the $0^+$ and $0^-$ components of the $b^3Π$ state, satisfying all the requirements for the population transfer toward the lowest rovibrational level of the X$^1Σ^+$ state. Using two-photon spectroscopy, its binding energy was measured to be 4977.308(3) cm$^{-1}$, the most precise value to date. We calibrated all the transition strengths carefully and also demonstrated Raman transfer of Feshbach molecules to the absolute ground state.

Creation of an ultracold gas of ground-state $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules

We report the successful production of an ultracold sample of absolute ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules. Starting from weakly-bound Feshbach molecules formed via magneto-association, the lowest rovibrational and hyperfine level of the electronic ground state is populated following a high efficiency and high resolution two-photon Raman process. The high purity absolute ground-state samples have up to 8000 molecules and densities of over $10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. By measuring the Stark shifts induced by external electric fields, we determined the permanent electric dipole moment of the absolute ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb and demonstrated the capability of inducing an effective dipole moment over one Debye. Bimolecular reaction between ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules is endothermic, but we still observed a rather fast decay of the molecular sample. Our results pave the way toward investigation of ultracold molecular collisions in a fully controlled manner, and possibly to quantum gases of ultracold bosonic molecules with strong dipolar interactions.

Conditional Pulse Nulling Receiver for Multi-pulse PPM and Binary Quantum Coding Signals

Conditional pulse nulling (CPN) receiver is proposed by Dolinar to discriminate pulse position modulation (PPM) signals. The receiver using a beam splitter and an on-off photon detector can outperform the standard quantum limit (SQL) for PPM signals. In this paper, we apply this receiver to multi-pulse PPM (MPPM) and binary quantum coding signals, and use dynamic programming algorithm to optimize the control strategy. The MPPM signals is used to improve the band-utilization efficiency, and the binary quantum coding make the communication able to correct the error. Numerical simulation results show that the CPN receiver with optimized strategy can also outperform SQL for both MPPM and binary quantum coding signals.

Long-range states of the NaRb molecule near the Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{3/2}$) asymptote

We report a high-resolution spectroscopic investigation of the long-range states of the $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecule near its Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{3/2}$) asymptote. This study was performed with weakly bound ultracold molecules produced via magneto-association with an inter-species Feshbach resonance. We observed several regular vibrational series, which are assigned to the 5 attractive long-range states correlated with this asymptote. The vibrational levels of two of these states have sharp but complex structures due to hyperfine and Zeeman interactions. For the other states, we observed significant linewidth broadenings due to strong predissociation caused by spin-orbit couplings with states correlated to the lower Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{1/2}$) asymptote. The long-range $C_6$ van der Waals coefficients extracted from our spectrum are in good agreement with theoretical values.

HFR Code: A Flexible Replication Scheme for Cloud Storage Systems

Fractional repetition (FR) codes are a family of repair-efficient storage codes that provide exact and uncoded node repair at the minimum bandwidth regenerating point. The advantageous repair properties are achieved by a tailor-made two-layer encoding scheme which concatenates an outer maximum-distance-separable (MDS) code and an inner repetition code. In this paper, we generalize the application of FR codes and propose heterogeneous fractional repetition (HFR) code, which is adaptable to the scenario where the repetition degrees of coded packets are different. We provide explicit code constructions by utilizing group divisible designs, which allow the design of HFR codes over a large range of parameters. The constructed codes achieve the system storage capacity under random access repair and have multiple repair alternatives for node failures. Further, we take advantage of the systematic feature of MDS codes and present a novel design framework of HFR codes, in which storage nodes can be wisely partitioned into clusters such that data reconstruction time can be reduced when contacting nodes in the same cluster.

Investigation of practical application for QAM hybrid receiver

We present a quantum receiver for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) coherent states discrimination with homodyne-displacement hybrid structure. Our strategy is to carry out two successive measurements on parts of the quantum states. The homodyne result of the first measurement reveals partial information about the state and is forward to a displacement receiver, which finally identifies the input state by using feedback to adjust a reference field. Numerical simulation results show that for 16-QAM, the hybrid receiver could outperform the standard quantum limit (SQL) with a reduced number of codeword interval partitions and on-off detectors, which shows great potential toward implementing the practical application.

QAM Adaptive Measurements Feedback Quantum Receiver Performance

We theoretically study the quantum receivers with adaptive measurements feedback for discriminating quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) coherent states in terms of average symbol error rate. For rectangular 16-QAM signal set, with different stages of adaptive measurements, the effects of realistic imperfection parameters including the sub-unity quantum efficiency and the dark counts of on-off detectors, as well as the transmittance of beam splitters and the mode mismatch factor between the signal and local oscillating fields on the symbol error rate are separately investigated through Monte Carlo simulations. Using photon-number-resolving detectors (PNRD) instead of on-off detectors, all the effects on the symbol error rate due to the above four imperfections can be suppressed in a certain degree. The finite resolution and PNR capability of PNRDs are also considered. We find that for currently available technology, the receiver shows a reasonable gain from the standard quantum limit (SQL) with moderate stages.

Coherent spin mixing dynamics in thermal $^{87}$Rb spin-1 and spin-2 gases

We study the non-equilibrium coherent spin mixing dynamics in ferromagnetic spin-1 and antiferromagnetic spin-2 thermal gases of ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms. Long lasting spin population oscillations with magnetic field dependent resonances are observed in both cases. Our observations are well reproduced by Boltzmann equations of the Wigner distribution function. Compared to the equation of motion of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, the only difference here is a factor of two increase in the spin-dependent interaction, which is confirmed directly in the spin-2 case by measuring the relation between the oscillation amplitude and the sample's density.

Formation of Ultracold NaRb Feshbach Molecules

We report the creation of ultracold bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules via magneto-association. By ramping the magnetic field across an interspecies Feshbach resonance, at least 4000 molecules can be produced out of the near degenerate ultracold mixture. Fast loss due to inelastic atom-molecule collisions is observed, which limits the pure molecule number, after residual atoms removal, to 1700. The pure molecule sample can live for 21.8(8) ms in the optical trap, long enough for future molecular spectroscopy studies toward coherently transferring to the singlet ro-vibrational ground state, where these molecules are stable against chemical reaction and have a permanent electric dipole moment of 3.3 Debye. We have also measured the Feshbach molecule's binding energy near the Feshbach resonance by the oscillating magnetic field method and found these molecules have a large closed-channel fraction.

Coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics in an ultracold spin-1 mixture

We report the observation of coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics driven by inter-species spin-spin interaction in an ultracold spinor mixture, which manifests as periodical and well correlated spin oscillations between two atomic species. In particular, we investigate the magnetic field dependence of the oscillations and find a resonance behavior which depends on {\em both} the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects and the spin-dependent interaction. We also demonstrate a unique knob for controlling the spin dynamics in the spinor mixture with species-dependent vector light shifts. Our finds are in agreement with theoretical simulations without any fitting parameters.
