Phase interference in antiferromagnetic quantum tunneling with an arbitrarily directed magnetic field

The quantum interference effects induced by the topological phase are studied analytically in biaxial antiferromagnets with an external magnetic field at an arbitrarily angle. This study provides a nontrivial generalization of the Kramers degeneracy for equivalent double-well system to coherently spin tunneling at ground states as well as low-lying excited states for antiferromagnetic system with asymmetric twin barriers. The spin-phase interference effects are found to depend on the orientation of the magnetic field distinctly.

Field-dependent quantum nucleation of antiferromagnetic bubbles

The phenomenon of quantum nucleation is studied in a nanometer-scale antiferromagnet with biaxial symmetry in the presence of a magnetic field at an arbitrary angle. Within the instanton approach, we calculate the dependence of the rate of quantum nucleation and the crossover temperature on the orientation and strength of the field for bulk solids and two-dimensional films of antiferromagnets, respectively. Our results show that the rate of quantum nucleation and the crossover temperature from thermal-to-quantum transitions depend on the orientation and strength of the field distinctly, which can be tested with the use of existing experimental techniques.

Eight-potential-well order-disorder ferroelectric model and effects of random fields

An eight-potential-well order-disorder ferroelectric model was presented and the phase transition was studied under the mean-field approximation. It was shown that the two-body interactions are able to account for the first-order and the second order phase transitions. With increasing the random fields in the system, a first-order phase transition is transformed into a second-order phase transition, and furthermore, a second-order phase transition is inhibited. However, proper random fields can promote the spontaneous appearance of a first-order phase transition by increasing the overcooled temperature. The connections of the model with relaxors were discussed.

Phase interference of spin tunneling in an arbitrarily directed magnetic field

We present an exact analytic study on the topological phase interference effect in resonant quantum tunneling of the magnetization between degenerate excited levels for biaxial ferromagnets in an arbitrarily directed magnetic field. We show that the topological phase interference effect depends on the orientation of the field distinctly. The transition from classical to quantum behavior is also discussed.

Magnetization quantum tunneling at excited levels for a biaxial spin system in an arbitrarily directed magnetic field

The quantum tunneling of the magnetization vector between excited levels are studied theoretically in single-domain ferromagnetic nanoparticles with biaxial crystal symmetry placed in an external magnetic field at an arbitarily directed angle in the ZX plane. The temperature dependences of the tunneling frequency and the decay rate are clearly shown for each case.

Spin tunneling of trigonal and hexagonal ferromagnets in an arbitrarily directed magnetic field

The quantum tunneling of the magnetization vector are studied theoretically in single-domain ferromagnetic nanoparticles placed in an external magnetic field at an arbitrarily directed angle in the $ZX$ plane. We consider the magnetocrystalline anisotropy with trigonal and hexagonal crystal symmetry, respectively. By applying the instanton technique in the spin-coherent-state path-integral representation, we calculate the tunnel splittings, the tunneling rates and the crossover temperatures in the low barrier limit for different angle ranges of the external magnetic field ($θ_{H}=π/2$, $π/2\llθ_{H}\llπ$, and $θ_{H}=π$). Our results show that the tunnel splittings, the tunneling rates and the crossover temperatures depend on the orientation of the external magnetic field distinctly, which provides a possible experimental test for magnetic quantum tunneling in nanometer-scale single-domain ferromagnets.

CVM studies on the atomic ordering in complex perovskite alloys

The atomic ordering in complex perovskite alloys is investigated by the cluster variation method (CVM). For the 1/3\{111\}-type ordered structure, the order-disorder phase transition is the first order, and the order parameter of the 1:2 complex perovskite reaches its maximum near x=0.25. For the 1/2\{111\}-type ordered structure, the ordering transition is the second order. Phase diagrams for both ordered structures are obtained. The order-disorder line obeys the linear law.

Effects of ac-field amplitude on the dielectric susceptibility of relaxors

The thermally activated flips of the local spontaneous polarization in relaxors were simulated to investigate the effects of the applied-ac-field amplitude on the dielectric susceptibility. It was observed that the susceptibility increases with increasing the amplitude at low temperatures. At high temperatures, the susceptibility experiences a plateau and then drops. The maximum in the temperature dependence of susceptibility shifts to lower temperatures when the amplitude increases. A similarity was found between the effects of the amplitude and frequency on the susceptibility.

Resonant quantum coherence of magnetization at excited states in nanospin systems with different crystal symmetries

The quantum interference effects induced by the Wess-Zumino term, or Berry phase are studied theoretically in resonant quantum coherence of magnetization vector between degenerate excited states in nanometer-scale single-domain ferromagnets in the absence of an external magnetic field. By applying the periodic instanton method in the spin-coherent-state path integral, we evaluate the low-lying tunnel splittings between degenerate excited states of neighboring wells. And the low-lying energy level spectrum of m-th excited states are obtained with the help of the Bloch theorem in one-dimensional periodic potential.

Dielectric nonlinearity of relaxor ferroelectric ceramics at low ac drives

Dielectric nonlinear response of (PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_3$)$_{0.9}$(PbTiO$_3$)$_{0.1}$ (0.9PMN-0.1PT) relaxor ceramics was investigated under different ac drive voltages. It was observed that: (i) the dielectric permittivity is independent on ac field amplitude at high temperatures; (ii) with increasing ac drive, the permittivity maximum increases, and the temperature of the maximum shifts to lower temperature; (iii) the nonlinear effect is weakened when the measurement frequency increases. The influences of increasing ac drive were found to be similar to that of decreasing frequency. It is believed that the dielectric nonlinearities of relaxors at low drives can be explained by the phase transition theory of ergodic space shrinking in succession. A Monte Carlo simulation was performed on the flips of micro polarizations at low ac drives to verify the theory.

Scaling for domain growth in the Ising model with competing dynamics

We study the domain growth of the one-dimensional kinetic Ising model under the competing influence of Glauber dynamics at temperature T and Kawasaki dynamics with a configuration-independent rate. The scaling of the structure factor is shown to have the form for nonconserved dynamics with the corrections arising from the spin-exchange process, i.e., $S(k,t)=Lg_0(kL,t/τ)+g_1(kL,t/τ)+... $, and the corresponding scaling functions are calculated analytically. A correction to the Porod law at zero temperature is also given.
