Dynamic NOMA-Based Computation Offloading in Vehicular Platoons

Both the Mobile edge computing (MEC)-based and fog computing (FC)-aided Internet of Vehicles (IoV) constitute promising paradigms of meeting the demands of low-latency pervasive computing. To this end, we construct a dynamic NOMA-based computation offloading scheme for vehicular platoons on highways, where the vehicles can offload their computing tasks to other platoon members. To cope with the rapidly fluctuating channel quality, we divide the timeline into successive time slots according to the channel's coherence time. Robust computing and offloading decisions are made for each time slot after taking the channel estimation errors into account. Considering a certain time slot, we first analytically characterize both the locally computed source data and the offloaded source data as well as the energy consumption of every vehicle in the platoons. We then formulate the problem of minimizing the long-term maximum task queue by optimizing the allocation of both the communication and computing resources. To solve the problem formulated, we design an online algorithm based on the classic Lyapunov optimization method and successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Finally, the numerical simulation results characterize the performance of our algorithm and demonstrate its advantages both over the local computing scheme and the orthogonal multiple access (OMA)-based offloading scheme.

Next-Generation Full Duplex Networking System Empowered by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Full duplex (FD) radio has attracted extensive attention due to its co-time and co-frequency transceiving capability. {However, the potential gain brought by FD radios is closely related to the management of self-interference (SI), which imposes high or even stringent requirements on SI cancellation (SIC) techniques. When the FD deployment evolves into next-generation mobile networking, the SI problem becomes more complicated, significantly limiting its potential gains.} In this paper, we conceive a multi-cell FD networking scheme by deploying a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) at the cell boundary to configure the radio environment proactively. To achieve the full potential of the system, we aim to maximize the sum rate (SR) of multiple cells by jointly optimizing the transmit precoding (TPC) matrices at FD base stations (BSs) and users and the phase shift matrix at RIS. Since the original problem is non-convex, we reformulate and decouple it into a pair of subproblems by utilizing the relationship between the SR and minimum mean square error (MMSE). The optimal solutions of TPC matrices are obtained in closed form, while both complex circle manifold (CCM) and successive convex approximation (SCA) based algorithms are developed to resolve the phase shift matrix suboptimally. Our simulation results show that introducing an RIS into an FD networking system not only improves the overall SR significantly but also enhances the cell edge performance prominently. More importantly, we validate that the RIS deployment with optimized phase shifts can reduce the requirement for SIC and the number of BS antennas, which further reduces the hardware cost and power consumption, especially with a sufficient number of reflecting elements. As a result, the utilization of an RIS enables the originally cumbersome FD networking system to become efficient and practical.

Delay Aware Secure Offloading for NOMA-Assisted Mobile Edge Computing in Internet of Vehicles

In this paper, a multi-vehicle multi-task nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) system with passive eavesdropping vehicles is investigated. To heighten the performance of edge vehicles, we propose a vehicle grouping pairing method, which utilizes vehicles near the MEC as full-duplex relays to assist edge vehicles. For promoting transmission security, we employ artificial noise to interrupt eavesdropping vehicles. Furthermore, we derive the approximate expression of secrecy outage probability of the system. The combined optimization of vehicle task division, power allocation, and transmit beamforming is formulated to minimize the total delay of task completion of edge vehicles. Then, we design a power allocation and task scheduling algorithm based on genetic algorithm to solve the mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed scheme in terms of system security and transmission delay.

Application of Opportunistic Bit to Multilevel Codes

In this paper, we propose a new signal organization method to work in the structure of the multi level coding (MLC). The transmit bits are divided into opportunistic bit (OB) and conventional bit (CB), which are mapped to the lower level- and higher level signal in parallel to the MLC, respectively. Because the OB's mapping does not require signal power explicitly, the energy of the CB modulated symbol can be doubled. As the result, the overall mutual information of the proposed method is found higher than that of the conventional BPSK in one dimensional case. Moreover, the extension of the method to the two-complex-dimension shows the better performance over the QPSK. The numerical results confirm this approach.

A Practical Consideration on Convex Mutual Information

In this paper, we focus on the convex mutual information, which was found at the lowest level split in multilevel coding schemes with communications over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Theoretical analysis shows that communication achievable rates (ARs) do not necessarily below mutual information in the convex region. In addition, simulation results are provided as an evidence.

Secure Performance Analysis and Optimization for FD-NOMA Vehicular Communications

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication appeals to increasing research interest as a result of its applications to provide safety information as well as infotainment services. The increasing demand of transmit rates and various requirements of quality of services (QoS) in vehicular communication scenarios call for the integration of V2V communication systems and potential techniques in the future wireless communications, such as full duplex (FD) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) which enhance spectral efficiency and provide massive connectivity. However, the large amount of data transmission and user connectivity give rise to the concern of security issues and personal privacy. In order to analyze the security performance of V2V communications, we introduce a cooperative NOMA V2V system model with an FD relay. This paper focuses on the security performance of the FD-NOMA based V2V system on the physical layer perspective. We first derive several analytical results of the ergodic secrecy capacity. Then, we propose a secrecy sum rate optimization scheme utilizing the instantaneous channel state information (CSI), which is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem. Based on the differential structure of the non-convex constraints, the original problem is approximated and solved by a series of convex optimization problems. Simulation results validate the analytical results and the effectiveness of the secrecy sum rate optimization algorithm.

A Quasi-Doppler Method for Doubling Transmission Efficiency Through Two Orthogonal Directions

Inspired by the anisotropy of Doppler effect with wave propagations, we propose a new method to leverage one information symbol serving two users located in two geometrically orthogonal directions. Specifically in broadband wireless communication, we use multiple antennas with the proposed signal switching method to emulate a moving emission source and yield the frequency shift, referred to as Quasi Doppler effect, which is converted to the discrete phase modulation. Further, using this discrete modulated phase can adjust the phase of one transmit symbol in achieving two different phases in different directions. The modulation mechanism is explained through theoretical derivations with the analysis on the performance robustness in the application-scenarios of crossroads having small geometric deviations. In contrast to the use of conventional symbols, this approach can double the transmission efficiency which is confirmed by our simulations results.

A Signal Separation Method for Exceeding the Channel Capacity of BPSK Input

The field of the coded modulations witnessed its golden era as the simulated achievable bit rates (ABRs) were getting close to the channel capacities of the finite alphabet inputs. However, when working at a single channel, the previous researches are mostly restricted in scope of single input and single output. In contrast, for achieving higher spectral efficiency, the present authors propose a method that builds upon the parallel transmission of two signals that are separated at the receiver. The signal separation is enabled by, so called, the double mapping modulation working through Hamming- to Euclidean space. Consequently, the ABR summation of the two signals is found higher the channel capacity of BPSK input. Both the theoretical- and simulation result confirm this approach.

Beyond the Channel Capacity of BPSK Input

The paper proposed a method that organizes a parallel transmission of two signals to be separated from each other at receiver through Hamming- to Euclidean space, where the conventional problem of achievable bit rate (ABR) is converted to that of the ABR's summation with respect to the two separated signals. Actually, the mutual information is separated accordingly into two. Since the mutual information is non-linear function of signal power in general, the separation brings a chance for achieving higher ABR. The proposed work proceeds along the above thinking and achieves higher bit-error-rate (BER) performance in comparison with BPSK as shown in the simulations. Moreover, one can find theoretically beyond of channel capacity of BPSK input.

Orthogonal Cocktail BPSK: Exceeding Shannon Capacity of QPSK Input

Shannon channel capacity of an additive white Gaussian noise channel is the highest reliable transmission bit rate (RTBR) with arbitrary small error probability. However, the authors find that the concept is correct only when the channel input and output is treated as a single signal-stream. Hence, this work reveals a possibility for increasing the RTBR further by transmitting two independent signal-streams in parallel manner. The gain is obtained by separating the two signals at the receiver without any inter-steam interference. For doing so, we borrow the QPSK constellation to layer the two independent signals and create the partial decoding method to work with the signal separation from Hamming to Euclidean space. The theoretical derivations prove that the proposed method can exceed the conventional QPSK in terms of RTBRs.

Cocktail Intra-Symbol-Codes: Exceeding the Channel Limit of QPSK Input

This paper presents a new method, referred to as the cocktail intra-symbol-code, to reveal the possibility of exceeding the channel limit of QPSK input by transmitting independent signals in parallel manner and separating them the receiver, repetitively. In the proposed modulation scheme, the rhombic constellation is created to work with the modulated signal and the channel code in Euclidean- and Hamming space cooperatively. The theoretical derivations are done under the assumption of using the capacity-achieving codes and the results are shown in terms of the reliable bit rates.

A Method Beyond Channel Capacity in the Low SNR Regime: Theoretical Proof and Numerical Confirmation

A method is proposed, referred to as the cocktail BPSK, to use two independent BPSK streams layered in a parallel transmission through the additive white Gaussian channel. The critical point of the method is to translate the interference between the two layered symbols into a problem of one symbol with two possible amplitudes, whereby we find that the achievable data rate (ADR) of the first layer equals to the channel capacity at zero signal-to-noise-ratio limit. By adding the contribution of the second layer, we find that the total ADR of the two layers can be larger than the channel capacity. The theoretical proof is done based on the mutual information and the numerical results are added for the confirmation.

Cocktail BPSK: Achievable Data Rate beyond Channel Capacity

In this paper, we propose a method layering two independent BPSK symbol streams in parallel transmission through a single additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and investigate its achievable data rate (ADR). The receiver processes the two layered signals individually, where the critical point is to translate the interference between the two layers into the problem of one BPSK symbol having two equiprobable amplitudes. After detecting one symbol stream, we subtract the detected result to demodulate the other symbol stream. Based on the concept of mutual information, we formulate the ADRs and unearth an interesting phenomenon -- the sum ADR of the two BPSK symbol streams is higher than the channel capacity at low signal to noise ratio (SNR). Our theoretical derivations together with illustrative numerical results substantiate this phenomenon. We refer to this approach as cocktail BPSK because the amplitudes of the two layered BPSK streams can be adjusted at the transmitter to achieve high spectral efficiency.

Cocktail BPSK: Energy Reused Scheme for High Achievable Data Rates

The present paper proposes a novel transmission strategy, referred to as cocktail BPSK, whereat two independent BPSKs are superposed with the non-orthogonal basis in a parallel transmission. In contrast to the conventional signal superpositions, the proposed scheme avoids the interference between the two symbols, allows the symbol-energy-reuse of each other and gains the extra energy. Based on the formulation of the mutual informations, the theoretical analysis shows that the cocktail BPSK scheme can achieve high data rate beyond the channel capacity at very low SNR, and the numerical results confirm this approach eventually.

Cocktail BPSK: Cross Power Utilization for High Data Rates

This paper proposes a novel transmission strategy, referred to as cocktail BPSK, where two independent BPSK symbols are layered with various weights to be transmitted and, capitalizing on the cross power utilization, will be demodulated at the receiver without interference from each other. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, its achievable data rate is formulated over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical results are provided for the performance comparisons between the proposed scheme and conventional transmission schemes, which substantiate the validity of the proposed scheme. Specifically, when the signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) is small, the achievable data rate of the proposed scheme outperforms the channel capacity achieved by Gaussian-distributed inputs.

To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, its data rate is formulated over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical results are provided for the performance comparisons between the proposed scheme and conventional transmission schemes, which substantiate the validity of the proposed scheme.

An Opportunistic-Bit Scheme with IP Styled Communication

This work is motivated by the need for the fundamental increase of spectral efficiency with the transmissions on the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). To emphasize the work in physical layer, we define a bit-unit (BU) that is conceptually similar to an IP packet that contains sufficient information for its destination node to identify the address and interpret the contents in performing the message communication. Armed with these functions, we divide one BU into two parts, which are defined as opportunistic bit (OB) and conventional bit (CB), respectively. In addition, we design the sequential time-slots (TSs) in such a way that the OB can be mapped to the index of a TS, and the CB can be carried by the corresponding TS. To enable the communication, we pre-store a bit-to-TS mapping table at both of the transmitter and the receiver. As result, we can save time resource and gain spectral efficiency as shown in the theoretical analysis confirmed by the simulations.
