Performance Analysis for Heterogeneous Air-Ground ISAC in Coordinated Multipoint Networks

The emergence of the \textit{low-altitude economy} (LAE) calls for highly integrated and reliable wireless systems that can simultaneously support \textit{communication and sensing} (C\&S) functions. Although \textit{integrated sensing and communication} (ISAC) has been widely studied, most existing works focused on link-level or single-cell architectures in terrestrial environments, leaving the potential of network-level cooperative air-ground ISAC largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, a heterogeneous air-ground ISAC network architecture based on \textit{coordinated multipoint} (CoMP) is proposed, which incorporates a cooperative hybrid mono/bi-static sensing scheme to enhance spatial diversity and sensing capability. In the proposed architecture, a two-tier \textit{base station} (BS) deployment is adopted: master BSs are arranged in a hexagonal lattice, while slave BSs follow a Poisson point process distribution. This structure concurrently supports communication for terrestrial users and sensing for aerial targets. A holistic performance analysis framework for both C\&S is further developed, accounting for key channel and network parameters. Simulation results reveal inherent trade-offs between C\&S performance, especially under multi-BS cooperation and varying network density. These findings provide practical guidance for the deployment of scalable and efficient ISAC networks in LAE scenarios.

Pinching-Antenna Enabled Multicell Wireless Systems

Pinching antenna (PA) systems have recently emerged as a promising flexible-antenna technology, which can reconstruct the wireless propagation environment by dynamically adjusting the positions of pinching elements along dielectric waveguides, thereby providing new spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) for enhancing wireless system performance. This paper investigates a multi-waveguide PA-based multi-cell communication system, focusing on the joint optimization of precoding matrices, waveguide power allocation, and antenna placement to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR). In multi-cell scenarios, inter-cell interference typically leads to a highly coupled and nonconvex WSR maximization problem. To address this challenge, an efficient alternating optimization framework is adopted to optimize each variable in an iterative way. Specifically, fractional programming is first employed to reformulate the original problem by introducing auxiliary variables that decouple the signal and interference terms. Based on this reformulation, block coordinate descent is then applied to optimize the precoding matrices and power allocation, leading to closed-form or semi-closed-form updates. For the high-dimensional and nonconvex PA placement problem, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is utilized to perform an efficient search and improve scalability. Numerical results demonstrate that, under various system configurations, the proposed scheme significantly outperforms baseline methods, including average power allocation, fixed antenna placement, conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and massive MIMO. These results highlight the strong potential of PA systems for large-scale multi-cell wireless communications.

OFDM Waveform Optimization for Bistatic Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper investigates the design of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms for bistatic integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. In the considered framework, an ISAC transmitter jointly optimizes subcarrier assignment and power allocation for a single OFDM waveform that simultaneously supports communication and sensing functionalities. Meanwhile, an ISAC receiver decodes information on communication subcarriers and estimates per-path propagation delays via exploiting pilot symbols on sensing subcarriers. We propose a joint path coefficient and delay estimation (JPCDE) scheme, revealing that the achievable communication data rate (CDR) is determined by the number of communication subcarriers, whereas the delay sensing accuracy is governed by the index distribution of sensing subcarriers. Building on this insight, we formulate an OFDM waveform optimization problem to maximize the CDR subject to sensing-accuracy and power-budget constraints. To solve this problem, we employ a quadratic transform and Lagrangian dual decomposition, which iteratively updates the subcarrier assignment and power allocation variables in closed-form. Our results reveal that a subcarrier is allocated for sensing if and only if its Fisher information gain exceeds the corresponding communication rate loss, while the power allocation for communication subcarriers exhibits a bounded water-filling structure. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed frameworks substantially outperform existing baselines in both delay estimation accuracy and CDR.

Sensing Performance Analysis in Cooperative Air-Ground ISAC Networks for LAE

To support the development of low altitude economy, the air-ground integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) networks need to be constructed to provide reliable and robust communication and sensing services. In this paper, the sensing capabilities in the cooperative air-ground ISAC networks are evaluated in terms of area radar detection coverage probability under a constant false alarm rate, where the distribution of aggregated sensing interferences is analyzed as a key intermediate result. Compared with the analysis based on the strongest interferer approximation, taking the aggregated sensing interference into consideration is better suited for pico-cell scenarios with high base station density. Simulations are conducted to validate the analysis.

Low-PAPR OFDM-ISAC Waveform Design Based on Frequency-Domain Phase Differences

Low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform design is a crucial issue in integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). This paper introduces an OFDM-ISAC waveform design that utilizes the entire spectrum simultaneously for both communication and sensing by leveraging a novel degree of freedom (DoF): the frequency-domain phase difference (PD). Based on this concept, we develop a novel PD-based OFDM-ISAC waveform structure and utilize it to design a PD-based Low-PAPR OFDM-ISAC (PLPOI) waveform. The design is formulated as an optimization problem incorporating four key constraints: the time-frequency relationship equation, frequency-domain unimodular constraints, PD constraints, and time-domain low PAPR requirements. To solve this challenging non-convex problem, we develop an efficient algorithm, ADMM-PLPOI, based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PLPOI waveform achieves significant improvements in both PAPR and bit error rate (BER) performance compared to conventional OFDM-ISAC waveforms.

Energy-Efficient SLAM via Joint Design of Sensing, Communication, and Exploration Speed

To support future spatial machine intelligence applications, lifelong simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) has drawn significant attentions. SLAM is usually realized based on various types of mobile robots performing simultaneous and continuous sensing and communication. This paper focuses on analyzing the energy efficiency of robot operation for lifelong SLAM by jointly considering sensing, communication and mechanical factors. The system model is built based on a robot equipped with a 2D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and an odometry. The cloud point raw data as well as the odometry data are wirelessly transmitted to data center where real-time map reconstruction is realized based on an unsupervised deep learning based method. The sensing duration, transmit power, transmit duration and exploration speed are jointly optimized to minimize the energy consumption. Simulations and experiments demonstrate the performance of our proposed method.

Successive Linear Approximation VBI for Joint Sparse Signal Recovery and Dynamic Grid Parameters Estimation

For many practical applications in wireless communications, we need to recover a structured sparse signal from a linear observation model with dynamic grid parameters in the sensing matrix. Conventional expectation maximization (EM)-based compressed sensing (CS) methods, such as turbo compressed sensing (Turbo-CS) and turbo variational Bayesian inference (Turbo-VBI), have double-loop iterations, where the inner loop (E-step) obtains a Bayesian estimation of sparse signals and the outer loop (M-step) obtains a point estimation of dynamic grid parameters. This leads to a slow convergence rate. Furthermore, each iteration of the E-step involves a complicated matrix inverse in general. To overcome these drawbacks, we first propose a successive linear approximation VBI (SLA-VBI) algorithm that can provide Bayesian estimation of both sparse signals and dynamic grid parameters. Besides, we simplify the matrix inverse operation based on the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithmic framework. In addition, we extend our proposed algorithm from an independent sparse prior to more complicated structured sparse priors, which can exploit structured sparsity in specific applications to further enhance the performance. Finally, we apply our proposed algorithm to solve two practical application problems in wireless communications and verify that the proposed algorithm can achieve faster convergence, lower complexity, and better performance compared to the state-of-the-art EM-based methods.
