Revisit the phase diagram and piezoelectricity of lead zirconate titanate from first principles

Lead zirconate titanate (PbZr1-xTixO3, PZT) exhibits excellent piezoelectric properties in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region of its temperature-composition phase diagram. However, the microscopic origin of its high piezoelectric response remains controversial. Here, we develop a machine-learning-based deep potential (DP) model of PZT using the training dataset from first principles density functional theory calculations. Based on DP-assisted large-scale atomic simulations, we reproduce the temperature-composition phase diagram of PZT, in good agreement with the experiment except the absence of structural transition from R3c to R3m. We find that the rhombohedral phase maintains R3c symmetry with slight oxygen octahedral tilting as increase of temperature, instead of appearing R3m symmetry. This discrepancy can trace back to the lack of experimental measurements to identify such slight octahedral tilting. More importantly, we clarify the atomic-level feature of PZT at the MPB, exhibiting the competing coupling of ferroelectric nanodomains with various polarization orientations. The high piezoelectric response is driven by polarization rotation of nanodomains induced by an external electric field.

Ultrafast switching dynamics of the ferroelectric order in stacking-engineered ferroelectrics

The recently discovered ferroelectricity of van der Waals bilayers offers an unconventional route to improve the performance of devices. Key parameters such as switching field and speed depend on the static and dynamic properties of domain walls (DWs). Here we theoretically explore the properties of textures in stacking-engineered ferroelectrics from first principles. Employing a machine-learning potential model, we present results of large-scale atomistic simulations of stacking DWs and Moiré structure of boron nitride bilayers. We predict that the competition between the switching barrier of stable ferroelectric states and the in-plane lattice distortion leads to a DW width of the order of ten nanometers. DWs motion reduces the critical ferroelectric switching field of a monodomain by two orders of magnitude, while high domain-wall velocities allow domain switching on a picosecond-timescale. The superior performance compared to conventional ferroelectrics (or ferromagnets) may enable ultrafast and power-saving non-volatile memories. By twisting the bilayer into a stacking Moiré structure, the ferroelectric transforms into a super-paraelectric since DWs move under ultralow electric fields.

Cellular Network Radio Propagation Modeling with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks

Radio propagation modeling and prediction is fundamental for modern cellular network planning and optimization. Conventional radio propagation models fall into two categories. Empirical models, based on coarse statistics, are simple and computationally efficient, but are inaccurate due to oversimplification. Deterministic models, such as ray tracing based on physical laws of wave propagation, are more accurate and site specific. But they have higher computational complexity and are inflexible to utilize site information other than traditional global information system (GIS) maps. In this article we present a novel method to model radio propagation using deep convolutional neural networks and report significantly improved performance compared to conventional models. We also lay down the framework for data-driven modeling of radio propagation and enable future research to utilize rich and unconventional information of the site, e.g. satellite photos, to provide more accurate and flexible models.

IFoodCloud: A Platform for Real-time Sentiment Analysis of Public Opinion about Food Safety in China

The Internet contains a wealth of public opinion on food safety, including views on food adulteration, food-borne diseases, agricultural pollution, irregular food distribution, and food production issues. In order to systematically collect and analyse public opinion on food safety, we developed IFoodCloud, a platform for the real-time sentiment analysis of public opinion on food safety in China. It collects data from more than 3,100 public sources that can be used to explore public opinion trends, public sentiment, and regional attention differences of food safety incidents. At the same time, we constructed a sentiment classification model using multiple lexicon-based and deep learning-based algorithms integrated with IFoodCloud that provide an unprecedented rapid means of understanding the public sentiment toward specific food safety incidents. Our best model's F1-score achieved 0.9737. Further, three real-world cases are presented to demonstrate the application and robustness. IFoodCloud could be considered a valuable tool for promote scientisation of food safety supervision and risk communication.

Large anomalous Hall effect in a hexagonal ferromagnetic Fe5Sn3 single crystal

In this paper, we report an experimental observation of the large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in a hexagonal ferromagnetic Fe5Sn3 single crystal with current along the b axis and a magnetic field normal to the bc plane. The intrinsic contribution of the anomalous Hall conductance sigma_AH^int was approximately 613 Ω-1 cm-1, which was more than 3 times the maximum value in the frustrated kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 and nearly independent of the temperature over a wide range between 5 and 350 K. The analysis results revealed that the large AHE was dominated by a common, intrinsic term, while the extrinsic contribution, i.e., the skew scattering and side jump, turned out to be small. In addition to the large AHE, it was found the types of majority carriers changed at approximately 275 and 30 K, consistent with the critical temperatures of the spin reorientation. These findings suggest that the hexagonal ferromagnetic Fe5Sn3 single crystal is an excellent candidate to use for the study of the topological features in ferromagnets.

Precise Phase Transition of Total Variation Minimization

Characterizing the phase transitions of convex optimizations in recovering structured signals or data is of central importance in compressed sensing, machine learning and statistics. The phase transitions of many convex optimization signal recovery methods such as $\ell_1$ minimization and nuclear norm minimization are well understood through recent years' research. However, rigorously characterizing the phase transition of total variation (TV) minimization in recovering sparse-gradient signal is still open. In this paper, we fully characterize the phase transition curve of the TV minimization. Our proof builds on Donoho, Johnstone and Montanari's conjectured phase transition curve for the TV approximate message passing algorithm (AMP), together with the linkage between the minmax Mean Square Error of a denoising problem and the high-dimensional convex geometry for TV minimization.
