Reconstructing the invisible fraction of semivisible jets in ISR-boosted events via neural network regression

Semi-visible jets (SVJs) provide a characteristic collider signature of strongly interacting dark sectors, in which the key model parameter $r_{\mathrm{inv}}$ controls the fraction of dark hadrons decaying to dark matter candidates. In this work, a regression model is developed to reconstruct $r_{\mathrm{inv}}$ in SVJ events produced in association with an energetic photon. The model uses information from high-level physics objects only, and the training procedure is optimized to ensure applicability. The performance is found to be robust against varying signal parameters and $r_{\mathrm{inv}}$ can be reconstructed at a much higher precision, compared to previously developed analytical method. It offers a new approach to conduct SVJ searches that can potentially unify both $s$-channel and $t$-channel productions, enhancing the sensitivities.

Enhancing di-jet resonance searches via a final-state radiation jet tagging algorithm

In this article, we investigate the possibility of enhancing the di-jet resonance searches by tagging the final state radiation (FSR) jet, using an event-level deep neural network. It is found that solely relying on the 4-momenta of the leading three jets allows the algorithm to achieve good discriminating power that can identify the hardest FSR jet in signal, while rejecting other soft jets. Once the invariant mass is corrected with the tagged FSR jet, the mass resolution of the signal is greatly enhanced, and the sensitivity of the search is also improved by more than 10%. By crafting the input variables carefully, the algorithm introduces minimal mass sculpting for the background, and its applicability extends to a broad mass range. This work proves that FSR jet tagging can potentially enhance the di-jet resonance searches, suiting various stages of the physics programmes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC).

Technical design report for the CODEX-$β$ demonstrator

The CODEX-$β$ apparatus is a demonstrator for the proposed future CODEX-b experiment, a long-lived-particle detector foreseen for operation at IP8 during HL-LHC data-taking. The demonstrator project, intended to collect data in 2025, is described, with a particular focus on the design, construction, and installation of the new apparatus.

Gaussian Process Regression as a Sustainable Data-driven Background Estimate Method at the (HL)-LHC

In this article, we evaluate the performance of a data-driven background estimate method based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). A realistic background spectrum from a search conducted by CMS is considered, where a large sub-region below the trigger threshold is included. It is found that the $L_2$ regularisation can serve as a set of hyperparameters and control the overall modelling performance to satisfy common standards established by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In addition, we show the robustness of this method against increasing luminosity via pseudo-experiments matching the expected luminosity at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). While traditional methods relying on empirical functions have been challenged during LHC Run 2 already, a GPR-based technique can offer a solution that is valid through the entire lifetime of the (HL)-LHC.

CODEX-b: Opening New Windows to the Long-Lived Particle Frontier at the LHC

This document is written as a contribution to the European Strategy of Particle Physics (ESPP) update. We offer a detailed overview of current developments and future directions for the CODEX-b detector, which aims to detect long-lived particles beyond the Standard Model. We summarize the scientific motivation for this detector, advances in our suite of simulation and detector optimization frameworks, and examine expected challenges, costs, and timelines in realizing the full detector. Additionally, we describe the technical specifications for the smaller-scale demonstrator detector (CODEX-$β$) we have installed in the LHCb experimental cavern.

Semi-visible jets + X: Illuminating Dark Showers with Radiation

We investigate the potential to search for semi-visible jets (SVJs) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using initial-state radiation (ISR). Both photon ISR and jet ISR channels are considered, using a benchmark signal model with the decay of a leptophobic $Z^\prime$ mediator forming two SVJs. We compare and extend several techniques to decompose the missing transverse momentum into per-jet contributions, in order to reconstruct the mediator mass and to define a new observable measuring the fraction of invisible dark hadrons. The presence of ISR facilitates the identification of the SVJs, and the resulting boost improves the resolution of the observables, especially for models with high invisible fractions. We combine the two observables to propose a complete search strategy and discuss an extension of the strategy to probe the whole model parameter space.

HHH Whitepaper

We here report on the progress of the HHH Workshop, that took place in Dubrovnik in July 2023. After the discovery of a particle that complies with the properties of the Higgs boson of the Standard Model, all Standard Model (SM) parameters are in principle determined. However, in order to verify or falsify the model, the full form of the potential has to be determined. This includes the measurement of the triple and quartic scalar couplings. We here report on ongoing progress of measurements for multi-scalar final states, with an emphasis on three SM-like scalar bosons at 125 GeV, but also mentioning other options. We discuss both experimental progress and challenges as well as theoretical studies and models that can enhance such rates with respect to the SM predictions
