Electrical Conductivity of an Anisotropic Quark Gluon Plasma : A Quasiparticle Approach

The study of transport coefficients of strongly interacting matter got impetus after the discovery of perfect fluid ever created at ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision experiments. In this article, we have calculated one such coefficient viz. electrical conductivity of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) phase which exhibits a momentum anisotropy. Relativistic Boltzmann's kinetic equation has been solved in the relaxation-time approximation to obtain the electrical conductivity. We have used the quasiparticle description to define the basic properties of QGP. We have compared our model results with the corresponding results obtained in different lattice as well as other model calculations. Furthermore, we extend our model to calculate the electrical conductivity at finite chemical potential.

Relativistic corrections to the central force problem in a generalized potential approach

We present a novel technique to obtain relativistic corrections to the central force problem in the Lagrangian formulation, using a generalized potential energy function. We derive a general expression for a generalized potential energy function for all powers of the velocity, which when made a part of the regular classical Lagrangian can reproduce the correct (relativistic) force equation. We then go on to derive the Hamiltonian and estimate the corrections to the total energy of the system up to the fourth power in $|\vec{v}|/c$. We found that our work is able to provide a more comprehensive understanding of relativistic corrections to the central force results and provides corrections to both the kinetic and potential energy of the system. We employ our methodology to calculate relativistic corrections to the circular orbit under the gravitational force and also the first-order corrections to the ground state energy of the hydrogen atom using a semi-classical approach. Our predictions in both problems give reasonable agreement with the known results. Thus we feel that this work has pedagogical value and can be used by undergraduate students to better understand the central force and the relativistic corrections to it.

Dissociation of Quarkonium in a Complex Potential

We have studied the quasi-free dissociation of quarkonia through a complex potential which is obtained by correcting both the perturbative and nonperturbative terms of the $Q \bar Q$ potential at T=0 through the dielectric function in real-time formalism. The presence of confining nonperturbative term even above the transition temperature makes the real-part of the potential more stronger and thus makes the quarkonia more bound and also enhances the (magnitude) imaginary-part which, in turn contributes more to the thermal width, compared to the medium-contribution of the perturbative term alone. These cumulative observations result the quarkonia to dissociate at higher temperatures. Finally we extend our calculation to a medium, exhibiting local momentum anisotropy, by calculating the leading anisotropic corrections to the propagators in Keldysh representation. The presence of anisotropy makes the real-part of the potential stronger but the imaginary-part is weakened slightly. However, since the medium corrections to the imaginary-part is a small perturbation to the vacuum part, overall the anisotropy makes the dissociation temperatures higher, compared to isotropic medium.

Bottomonium suppression: A probe to the pre-equilibrium era of quark matter

We have studied the thermal suppression of the bottomonium states in relativistic heavy-ion collision at LHC energies as function of centrality, rapidity, transverse momentum etc. to explain the CMS data. Our investigation mainly spans over three problems: a) how the theoretical predictions might still be modified by the remnants of the non-perturbative confining force, b) how does the presence of a not necessarily isotropic QCD medium modify the potential (both the real and imaginary part) acting between a static quark and antiquark pair, and c) finally how the additional time-zone of pre-equilibrium partonic evolution, in addition to the above modifications, affects the bottomonium production at the LHC energies. We resolve them by correcting both the perturbative and nonperturbative terms of the $Q\bar Q$ potential in (an)isotropic QCD medium and then couple to the dynamics of the system undergoing successive pre-equilibrium and equilibrium era. Due to the tiny formation time and the large binding energy of bottomonium (1S) state, we succeed in constraining the isotropization time and the shear viscosity.

Dissociation of quarkonium in an anisotropic hot QCD medium

We have investigated the properties of quarkonium states in an anisotropic hot QCD medium by correcting the full Cornell potential, not the Coulomb term alone as usually done in the literature, with a dielectric function from the hard-loop resummed gluon propagator. We have found that in-medium modification in anisotropic medium causes less screening than in isotropic medium. In the short distance limit, potential does not show any medium dependence whereas in the long-distance limit, it reduces to the Coulomb potential with a dynamically screened color charge. In addition, anisotropy in momentum space introduces a characteristic angular dependence in the potential and as a result, quarkonium states in anisotropic medium are more tightly bound than in isotropic medium. In particular, quark pairs aligned in the direction of anisotropy are more bound than perpendicular to the direction of anisotropy.

Charmonium suppression at RHIC: Signature of a strongly-interacting QGP, not a weakly interacting

Following a recent work on equation of state for strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma [J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 32, 993 (2006)], we revisited the equation of state by incorporating the non-perturbative effects in the deconfined plasma phase. Our results on thermodynamic observables viz. pressure, energy density, speed of sound etc. nicely fit with the lattice equation of state for gluon, massless and as well massive flavored plasma. Motivated by this agreement with lattice results, we have employed our equation of state to estimate the quarkonium suppression in an expanding, dissipative strongly interacting QGP produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions and our prediction matches exactly with the recent PHENIX data on the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ suppression in Au+Au collisions at BNL RHIC. We have also predicted for the $Υ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy which could be tested in the ALICE experiments at CERN LHC.

Charmonium suppression in the presence of dissipative forces in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma

We study the survival of charmonium states in a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma in the presence of dissipative forces. We consider first-order dissipative corrections to the plasma equation of motion in the Bjorken boost-invariant expansion with a strongly-coupled equation of state for QGP and study the survival of these states with the dissociation temperatures obtained by correcting the full Cornell potential not its Coulomb part alone with a dielectric function encoding the effects of deconfined medium. We further explore the sensitivity of prompt and sequential suppression of these states to the shear viscosity-to-entropy density ratio, $η/s$ from perturbative QCD and AdS/CFT predictions. Our results show excellent agreement with the recent experimental results at RHIC.

Dissociation of quarkonium in hot QCD medium: Modification of the inter-quark potential

We have studied the dissociation of heavy quarkonium states in a hot QCD medium by investigating the medium modifications to a heavy quark potential. Our model shows that in-medium modification causes the screening of the charge in contrast to the screening of the range of the potential. We have then employed the medium-modified potential to estimate the dissociation pattern of the charmonium and bottomonium states and also explore how the pattern changes as we go from the perturbative to nonperturbative domain in the Debye mass. The results are in good agreement with the other current theoretical works both from the spectral function analysis and the potential model study.

$J/ψ$ suppression in nucleus-nucleus collisions

At high temperatures, strongly interacting matter becomes a plasma of deconfined quarks and gluons. In statistical QCD, deconfinement and the properties of the resulting quark-gluon plasma can be investigated by studying the in-medium behaviour of heavy quark bound states. In high energy nuclear interactions, quarkonia probe different aspects of the medium formed in the collision. So, we first reviewed the fate of quarkonia in the different stages of the (dynamical) system produced at the collision. We have then presented our present work on the dissociation of the heavy quarkonium states in a hot QCD medium by investigating the medium modifications to heavy quark potential. In contrast to the usual screening picture, interestingly our theory gives rise the screening of the charge, not the range of the potential.

$J/ψ$ suppression: gluonic dissociation {\em vs.} colour screening

We evaluate the suppression of $J/ψ$ production in an equilibrating quark gluon plasma for two competing mechanisms: Debye screening of colour interaction and dissociation due to energetic gluons. Results are obtained for $S+S$ and $Au+Au$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. At RHIC energies the gluonic dissociation of the charmonium is found to be equally important for both the systems while the screening of the interaction plays a significant role only for the larger systems. At LHC energies the Debye mechanism is found to dominate for both the systems. While considering the suppression of directly produced $Υ$ at LHC energies, we find that only the gluonic dissociation mechanism comes into play for the initial conditions taken from the self screened parton cascade model in these studies. Thus we find that a systematic study of quarkonium suppression for systems of varying dimensions can help identify the source and the extent of the suppression.

Determination of equation of state of quark matter from $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ suppression at RHIC and LHC

The long life-time of the quark-gluon plasma likely to be created in the relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies renders it sensitive to the details of the equation of state of the quark-matter. We show that the $p_T$ dependence of the survival probability of the directly produced $J/ψ$ at RHIC energies and that of the directly produced $Υ$ at LHC energies is quite sensitive to the speed of sound in the quark matter, which relates the pressure and the energy density of the plasma. The transverse expansion of the plasma is shown to strongly affect the $J/ψ$ suppression at LHC energies.
