Origins of spontaneous magnetic fields in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The nature of the broken time reversal symmetry (BTRS) state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ remains elusive, and its relation to superconductivity remains controversial. There are various universal predictions for the BTRS state when it is associated with a multicomponent superconducting order parameter. In particular, in the BTRS superconducting state, spontaneous fields appear around crystalline defects, impurities, superconducting domain walls and sample surfaces. However, this phenomenon has not yet been experimentally demonstrated for any BTRS superconductor. Here, we aimed to verify these predictions for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by performing muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on Sr$_{2-y}$La$_{y}$RuO$_4$ single crystals at ambient pressure and stoichiometric Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under hydrostatic pressure. The study allowed us to conclude that spontaneous fields in the BTRS superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ appear around non-magnetic inhomogeneities and, at the same time, decrease with the suppression of $T_{\rm c}$. The observed behaviour is consistent with the prediction for multicomponent BTRS superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. The results of the work are relevant to understanding BTRS superconductivity in general, as they demonstrate, for the first time, the relationship among the superconducting order parameter, the BTRS transition, and crystal-structure inhomogeneities.

Glass-like anomalies and unconventional thermoelectric transport in chimney ladder crystals

Nowotny chimney ladder (NCL) crystals present physical properties in between the contrasting paradigms of ideal crystal and amorphous solid, making them promising candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their inherently low thermal conductivity. In this work, we report an extensive experimental characterization of the thermodynamic and thermoelectric transport properties of a large class of NCL materials, focusing on the intermetallic compound Ru$_2$Sn$_{3}$. We show that, despite their ordered crystalline structure, the heat capacity of these NCL compounds deviates from the Debye model at low temperatures and exhibits a boson-peak-like glassy anomaly in the range of $8$-$14$ K. By combining experimental measurements with density functional theory (DFT) and \emph{ab initio} molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we attribute the microscopic origin of this glassy behavior to extremely low-energy optical phonons that universally emerge from the chimney ladder sublattice structure. Crucially, their coupling to acoustic phonons induces hybridization and avoided crossings, leading to strongly modified acoustic modes that directly contribute to the anomaly as well, similar to the case of other thermoelectric materials such as clathrates. Additionally, the measured thermal conductivity and the thermoelectric response present distinct anomalous glass-like features that strongly correlate with the dynamics of the low-lying optical phonons revealed by simulations. In particular, the electric resistivity displays an extended linear in $T$ behavior and an anomalously large $T^2$ contribution at low temperature. We propose a simple theoretical framework, based on electrons scattering with overdamped phononic modes, that qualitative explains both these features.

Enhanced deep-freezing magneto- and elasto-caloric effects by modifying lattice anharmonicity and electronic structures

Designing the high performance magneto or elastocaloric effect in NiMnIn alloys with spin-lattice coupling in a deep freezing temperature range of 200 K to 255 K is challenging due to the limited lattice entropy change and large negative contribution of magnetic entropy change during phase transitions. In this work, we systematically study the first order magneto-structural transition in NiMnIn based alloys by in-situ microstructural characterizations, physical property measurements, and first principles calculations. A multi element alloying strategy involving Cu and Ga co doping is proposed to manipulate the phase transition. The co doping reduces the lattice anharmonicity and thermal expansion coefficient of the martensitic phase, leading to an increase in the unit cell volume change and lattice entropy change. It also modifies the electronic density of states, causing a decrease in the magnetization change .The relief of the lattice mismatch reduces hysteresis losses in the refrigeration cycle. These synergetic effects yield excellent magneto and elastocaloric effects, with the effective magnetocaloric refrigeration capacity reaching up to 182 J/kg under the magnetic field of 5 T or an adiabatic temperature change of -4 K under a low field of 1.5 T and the elastocaloric coefficient of performance to 30 or an adiabatic temperature change of -7 K with the strain of 5% at 230 K, offering a potential solution for solid-state deep-freezing refrigeration.

Regulate the direct-indirect electronic band gap transition by electron-phonon interaction in BaSnO3

The neutron powder diffraction, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and Raman scattering measurements were presented to study the interplays of lattice, phonons and electrons of the Sr-doping Ba1-xSrxSnO3 (x was less than or equal to 0.1). Although Ba1-xSrxSnO3 kept the cubic lattice, the Raman spectra suggested a dynamic distortion at low temperature. The density functional theory was applied to analyze the electronic structures and phonon dispersions of Ba1-xSrxSnO3(x = 0, 0.0125), and the behaviors of electron bands around Fermi levels were discussed. According to the experimental and theoretical results, the Sr-doping played a significant role in tuning the indirect band gap of BaSnO3 and influenced the electron-phonon interaction.
