Stable blowup profile for a semilinear heat equation with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearity

We study the focusing semilinear heat equation with an additional defocusing Hénon-type nonlinearity, the coupling of which is measured by a constant $c >0$. For $c \in (0,c^*)$, the model admits a closed-form self-similar blowup solution in every space dimension $d \geq 1$. Restricting ourselves to the three-dimensional case, we study the stability of this solution under small non-radial perturbations. By working in intersection Sobolev spaces with additional angular regularity, we prove finite co-dimension stability for all admissible values of $c$. Furthermore, we analyze the spectrum of the underlying linearized operator and we prove stable blowup for the cubic-quintic case and $c$ sufficiently close to $c^*$. Finally, we discuss the situation for small values of $c$ and use a modified version of the classical GGMT criterion to give an upper bound on the number of unstable eigenvalues.

Existence of a stable shrinker for the corotational harmonic map heat flow in higher space dimensions

We study singularity formation for the heat flow of harmonic maps from $\R^d$ into $\mathbb{S}^d$ in supercritical dimensions $d \in \{3,4,5,6\}$. It is well known that in each of these dimensions there exist infinitely many self-similar solutions that provide examples of loss of regularity in finite time. In this paper, we extend the results of \cite{BieDon18}, \cite{BieDonSch17} for $d=3$ to higher space dimensions $d \in \{4,5,6\}$ and prove the existence of a monotonically increasing self-similar profile $f_0$, which is asymptotically stable under small corotational perturbations. To construct the solution and resolve the spectral problem, we use rigorous computer assistance. As a byproduct of our stability analysis, we also obtain finite-codimension stability of arbitrary self-similar profiles within the corotational class.

Stability of global self-similar solutions to the cubic wave equation and the wave maps equation

We study the long-time stability of global self-similar solutions to two energy supercritical nonlinear wave equations, namely, the cubic nonlinear wave equation in $6$ dimensions and the corotational wave maps equation in $4$ dimensions. We prove the stability of self-similar solutions under perturbations that are small in the critical Sobolev spaces. The proof is based on Strichartz estimates for wave equations with potentials in similarity variables.

Self-similar blowup for the cubic Schrödinger equation

We give a rigorous proof for the existence of a finite-energy, self-similar solution to the focusing cubic Schrödinger equation in three spatial dimensions. The proof is computer-assisted and relies on a fixed point argument that shows the existence of a solution in the vicinity of a numerically constructed approximation. The latter is obtained by a standard pseudo-spectral method. The computer-assisted part of the rigorous proof uses nothing but fraction arithmetic in order to obtain quantitative bounds for the fixed point argument.

Stable blowup for supercritical wave maps into perturbed spheres

We consider wave maps from $(1+d)$-dimensional Minkowski space, $d\geq3$, into rotationally symmetric manifolds which arise from small perturbations of the sphere $\mathbb S^d$. We prove the existence of co-rotational self-similar finite time blowup solutions with smooth blowup profiles. Furthermore, we show the nonlinear asymptotic stability of these solutions under suitably small co-rotational perturbations on the full space.

Singularity formation for the higher dimensional Skyrme model in the strong field limit

This paper concerns the formation of singularities in the classical $(5+1)$-dimensional, co-rotational Skyrme model. While it is well established that blowup is excluded in $(3+1)$-dimensions, nothing appears to be known in the higher dimensional case. We prove that the model, in the so-called strong field limit, admits an explicit self-similar solution which is asymptotically stable within backwards light cones. From a technical point of view, the main obstacle to this result is the presence of derivative nonlinearities in the corresponding evolution equation. These introduce first order terms in the linearized flow which render standard techniques useless. We demonstrate how this problem can be bypassed by using structural properties of the Skyrme model.

Existence and stability of shrinkers for the harmonic map heat flow in higher dimensions

We study singularity formation for the heat flow of harmonic maps from $\R^d$. For each $d \geq 4$, we construct a compact, $d$-dimensional, rotationally symmetric target manifold that allows for the existence of a corotational self-similar shrinking solution (shortly \emph{shrinker}) that represents a stable blowup mechanism for the corresponding Cauchy problem.

On blowup for the supercritical quadratic wave equation

We study singularity formation for the focusing quadratic wave equation in the energy supercritical case, i.e., for $d \geq 7$. We find in closed form a new, non-trivial, radial, self-similar blowup solution $u^*$ which exists for all $d \geq 7$. For $d=9$, we study the stability of $u^*$ without any symmetry assumptions on the initial data and show that there is a family of perturbations which lead to blowup via $u^*$. In similarity coordinates, this family represents a co-dimension one Lipschitz manifold modulo translation symmetries. In addition, in $d=7$ and $d=9$, we prove non-radial stability of the well-known ODE blowup solution. Also, for the first time we establish persistence of regularity for the wave equation in similarity coordinates.

Stable singularity formation for the Keller-Segel system in three dimensions

We consider the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system in dimensions $d \geq 3$, which is the mass supercritical case. This system is known to exhibit rich dynamical behavior including singularity formation via self-similar solutions. An explicit example has been found more than two decades ago by Brenner et al. \cite{BCKSV99}, and is conjectured to be nonlinearly radially stable. We prove this conjecture for $d=3$. Our approach consists of reformulating the problem in similarity variables and studying the Cauchy evolution in intersection Sobolev spaces via semigroup theory methods. To solve the underlying spectral problem, we crucially rely on a technique we recently developed in \cite{GloSch20}. To our knowledge, this provides the first result on stable self-similar blowup for the Keller-Segel system. Furthermore, the extension of our result to any higher dimension is straightforward. We point out that our approach is general and robust, and can therefore be applied to a wide class of parabolic models.

Co-dimension one stable blowup for the quadratic wave equation beyond the light cone

We study the stability of an explicitly known, non-trivial self-similar blowup solution of the quadratic wave equation in the lowest energy supercritical dimension $d = 7$. This solution blows up at a single point and extends naturally away from the singularity. By using hyperboloidal similarity coordinates, we prove the conditional nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small, compactly supported radial perturbations in a region of spacetime which can be made arbitrarily close to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. To achieve this, we rigorously solve the underlying spectral problem and show that the solution has exactly one genuine instability. The unstable nature of the solution requires a careful construction of suitably adjusted initial data at $t = 0$, which, when propagated to a family of spacelike hypersurfaces of constant hyperboloidal time, takes the required form to guarantee convergence. By this, we introduce a new canonical method to investigate unstable self-similar solutions for nonlinear wave equations within the framework of hyperboloidal similarity coordinates.

Co-dimension one stable blowup for the supercritical cubic wave equation

For the focusing cubic wave equation, we find an explicit, non-trivial self-similar blowup solution $u^*_T$, which is defined on the whole space and exists in all supercritical dimensions $d \geq 5$. For $d=7$, we analyze its stability properties without any symmetry assumptions and prove the existence of a set of perturbations which lead to blowup via $u^*_T$ in a backward light cone. Moreover, this set corresponds to a co-dimension one Lipschitz manifold modulo translation symmetries in similarity coordinates.

Nonlinear stability of homothetically shrinking Yang-Mills solitons in the equivariant case

We study the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb R^d \times SO(d)$. It is well-known that in dimensions $5 \leq d \leq 9$ this model admits homothetically shrinking solitons, i.e., self-similar blowup solutions, with an explicit example given by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Weinkove solution under small equivariant perturbations and thus extend a result by the second author and Donninger for $d=5$ to higher dimensions. At the same time, we provide a general framework for proving stability of self-similar blowup solutions to a large class of semilinear heat equations in arbitrary space dimension $d \geq 3$, including a robust and simple method for solving the underlying spectral problems.

Threshold for blowup for the supercritical cubic wave equation

We consider the focusing cubic wave equation in the energy supercritical case, i.e., in dimensions $d \geq 5$. For this model an explicit nontrivial self-similar blowup solution was recently found by the first and third author in \cite{GlogicSchoerkhuber}. Furthermore, the solution is proven to be co-dimension one stable in $d=7$. In this paper, we study the equation from a numerical point of view. For $d=5$ and $d=7$ in the radial case, we provide evidence that this solution is at the threshold between generic ODE blowup and dispersion. In addition, we investigate the spectral problem that underlies the stability analysis and compute the spectrum in general supercritical dimensions.

Hyperboloidal similarity coordinates and a globally stable blowup profile for supercritical wave maps

We consider co-rotational wave maps from (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space into the three-sphere. This model exhibits an explicit blowup solution and we prove the asymptotic nonlinear stability of this solution in the whole space under small perturbations of the initial data. The key ingredient is the introduction of a novel coordinate system that allows one to track the evolution past the blowup time and almost up to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. As a consequence, we also obtain a result on continuation beyond blowup.

Stable self-similar blowup in the supercritical heat flow of harmonic maps

We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear stability analysis of self-similar shrinkers to the spectral analysis of the associated self-adjoint linearized operators.

Stable blowup for the supercritical Yang-Mills heat flow

In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar blowup profile on an unbounded domain. Convergence is obtained in suitable Sobolev norms and in $L^{\infty}$.

Stable blowup for wave equations in odd space dimensions

We consider semilinear wave equations with focusing power nonlinearities in odd space dimensions $d \geq 5$. We prove that for every $p > \frac{d+3}{d-1}$ there exists an open set of radial initial data in $H^{\frac{d+1}{2}} \times H^{\frac{d-1}{2}}$ such that the corresponding solution exists in a backward lightcone and approaches the ODE blowup profile. The result covers the entire range of energy supercritical nonlinearities and extends our previous work for the three-dimensional radial wave equation to higher space dimensions.
