Quantum-Gravitational Backreaction in the BTZ Background from Curved Momentum Space

We explore how quantum properties of spacetime, specifically the curvature of momentum space, can backreact on classical gravity within a tractable semiclassical (2+1)-dimensional framework with a negative cosmological constant. Motivated by quantum-gravity scenarios, we investigate how Planck-scale modifications of particle kinematics influence both dynamics and gravitational solutions. Starting from a first-order action, we derive an effective configuration-space description and show that particle trajectories remain geodesic, preserving the weak equivalence principle despite the underlying deformation. Coupling this modified matter sector to Einstein gravity, we obtain a deformed BTZ black hole solution. Remarkably, the local geometric structure and thermodynamic relations retain their standard form, while all quantum-gravity effects are encoded in a nonlinear mapping between the microscopic mass parameter and the ADM mass. This induces a renormalization of the horizon radius and thermodynamic quantities without altering their functional dependence. As a concrete observable consequence, we compute corrections to the return time of massless probes traveling along null geodesics between the horizon and the AdS3 boundary. Our results demonstrate that Planck-scale kinematic effects can leave controlled and potentially measurable imprints on classical geometry, providing a clear and consistent bridge between quantum-gravity ideas and semiclassical observables.

Fate of $κ$-Minkowski space-time in non-relativistic (Galilean) and ultra-relativistic (Carrollian) regimes

Here, we present an algebraic and kinematical analysis of non-commutative $κ$-Minkowski spaces within Galilean (non-relativistic) and Carrollian (ultra-relativistic) regimes. Utilizing the theory of Wigner-Inönu contractions, we begin with a brief review of how one can apply these contractions to the well-known Poincaré algebra, yielding the corresponding Galilean (both massive and mass-less) and Carrollian algebras as $c \to \infty$ and $c\to 0$, respectively. Subsequently, we methodically apply these contractions to non-commutative $κ$-deformed spaces, revealing compelling insights into the interplay among the non-commutative parameters $a^μ$ (with $|a^ν|$ being of the order of Planck length scale) and the speed of light $c$ as it approaches both infinity and zero. Our exploration predicts a sort of "branching" of the non-commutative parameters $a^μ$, leading to the emergence of a novel length scale and time scale in either limit. Furthermore, our investigation extends to the examination of curved momentum spaces and their geodesic distances in appropriate subspaces of the $κ$-deformed Newtonian and Carrollian space-times. We finally delve into the study of their deformed dispersion relations, arising from these deformed geodesic distances, providing a comprehensive understanding of the nature of these space-times.

Symmetries of $κ$ Minkowski space-time: A possibility of exotic momentum space geometry?

The quest for a quantum gravity phenomenology has inspired a quantum notion of space-time, which motivates us to study the fate of the relativistic symmetries of a particular model of quantum space-time, as well as its intimate connection with the plausible emergent curved "physical momentum space". We here focus on the problem of Poincare symmetry of $κ$-Minkowski type non-commutative (quantum) space-time, where the Poincare algebra, on its own, remains undeformed, but in order to retain the structure of the space-time non-commutative (NC) algebra, action of the algebra generators on the operator-valued space-time manifold must be enveloping algebra valued that lives in entire phase space i.e. the cotangent bundle on the space-time manifold (at classical level). Further, we constructed a model for a spin-less relativistic massive particle enjoying the deformed Poincare symmetry, using the first order form of geometric Lagrangian, that satisfies a new deformed dispersion relation and explored a feasible regime of a future Quantum Gravity theory in which the momentum space becomes curved. In this scenario there is only a mass scale (Planck mass $m_{p}$), but no length scale. Finally, we relate the deformed mass shell to the geodesic distance in this curved momentum space, where the mass of the particle gets renormalized as a result of noncommutativity. We show, that under some circumstances, the Planck mass provides an upper bound for the observed renormalized mass.

Our Trysts with `Bal' and Noncommutative Geometry

This contributory article begins with our fond and sincere reminiscences about our beloved Prof. A.P. Balachandran. In the main part, we discuss our recent formulation of quantum mechanics on (1+1)D noncommutative space-time using Hilbert-Schmidt operators. As an application, we demonstrate how geometrical phase in a system of time-dependent forced harmonic oscillator living in the Moyal space-time can emerge.

Spectral triple with real structure on fuzzy sphere

Here we have illustrated the construction of a real structure on fuzzy sphere $S^2_*$ in its spin-1/2 representation. Considering the SU(2) covariant Dirac and chirality operator on $S^2_*$ given by Watamura et. al. in [6], we have shown that the real structure is consistent with other spectral data for KO dimension-4 fulfilling the zero order condition, where we find it necessary to enlarge the symmetry group from SO(3) to the full orthogonal group O(3). However the first order condition is violated thus paving the way to construct a toy model for an SU(2) gauge theory to capture some features of physics beyond standard model following Connes et.al. [9].

Fingerprints of the quantum space-time in time-dependent quantum mechanics: An emergent geometric phase

We show the emergence of Berry phase in a forced harmonic oscillator system placed in the quantum space-time of Moyal type, where the time 't' is also an operator. An effective commutative description of the system gives a time dependent generalised harmonic oscillator system with perturbation linear in position and momentum. The system is then diagonalised to get a generalised harmonic oscillator and then its adiabatic evolution over time-period $\mathcal{T}$ is studied in Heisenberg picture to compute the expression of geometric phase-shift.

Emergence of Geometric phase shift in Planar Non-commutative Quantum Mechanics

Appearance of adiabatic geometric phase shift in the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics is studied using an exactly solvable model of 2D simple harmonic oscilator in Moyal plane, where momentum non-commutativity are also considered along with spatial noncommutativity. After finding a suitable Bopp shift, that bridges the noncommutative phase space operators with their effective commutative counterparts, having their dependence on the non-commutative parameters, we study the adiabatic evolution in the Heisenberg picture. An explicit expression for the geometric phase shift under adiabatic approximation is then found without using any perturbative technique. Lastly, this phase is found to be related to the Hannay angle of a classically analogous system, by studying the evolution of the coherent state of this system.

Spectral Distance on Lorentzian Moyal Plane

We present here a completely operatorial approach, using Hilbert-Schmidt operators, to compute spectral distances between time-like separated "events ", associated with the pure states of the algebra describing the Lorentzian Moyal plane, using the axiomatic framework given by [13, 14]. The result shows no deformations of non-commutative origin, as in the Euclidean case.

Connecting dissipation and noncommutativity: A Bateman system case study

Quantum effects on a pair of Bateman oscillators embedded in an ambient noncommutative space (Moyal plane) is analyzed using both path integral and canonical quantization schemes within the framework of Hilbert-Schmidt operator formulation. We adopt a method which is distinct from the one which employs 't Hooft's scheme of quantization, carried out earlier in the literature where the ambient space was taken to be commutative. Our quantization shows that we end up finally again with a Bateman system except that the damping factor undergoes renormalization. The corresponding expression shows that the renormalized damping factor can be non-zero even if "bare" one is zero to begin with. Conversely, the noncommuatative parameter $θ$, taken to be a free one now, can be fine-tuned to get a vanishing renormalized damping factor. This indicates a duality between dissipative commutative theory and non-dissipative noncommutative theory.

Spectral distances on doubled Moyal plane using Dirac eigen-spinors

We present here a novel method of computing spectral distances in doubled Moyal plane in a noncommutative geometrical framework using Dirac eigen-spinors, while solving the Lipschitz ball condition explicitly through matrices. The standard results of longitudinal, transverse and hypotenuse distances between different pairs of pure states have been computed and Pythagorean equality between them have been re-produced. The issue of non-unital nature of Moyal plane algebra is taken care of through a sequence of projection operators constructed from Dirac eigen-spinors, which plays a crucial role throughout this paper. At the end, a toy model of "Higgs field" has been constructed by fluctuating the Dirac operator and the variation on the transverse distance has been demonstrated, through an explicit computation.

Quantum mechanics with space-time noncommutativity

We construct an effective commutative Schrödinger equation in Moyal space-time in $(1+1)$-dimension where both $t$ and $x$ are operator-valued and satisfy $\left[ \hat{t}, \hat{x} \right] = i θ$. Beginning with a time-reparametrised form of an action we identify the actions of various space-time coordinates and their conjugate momenta on quantum states, represented by Hilbert-Schmidt operators. Since time is also regarded as a configuration space variable, we show how an `induced' inner product can be extracted, so that an appropriate quantum mechanical interpretation is obtained. We then discuss several other applications of the formalism developed so far.

Revisiting Connes' Finite Spectral Distance on Non-commutative Spaces : Moyal Plane and Fuzzy Sphere

We revise and extend the algorithm provided in [1] to compute the finite Connes' distance between normal states. The original formula in [1] contains an error and actually only provides a lower bound. The correct expression, which we provide here, involves the computation of the infimum of an expression which involves the "transverse" component of the algebra element in addition to the "longitudinal" component of [1]. This renders the formula less user-friendly, as the determination of the exact transverse component for which the infimum is reached remains a non-trivial task, but under rather generic conditions it turns out that the Connes' distance is proportional to the trace norm of the difference in the density matrices, leading to considerable simplification. In addition, we can determine an upper bound of the distance by emulating and adapting the approach of [2] in our Hilbert-Schmidt operatorial formulation. We then look for an optimal element for which the upper bound is reached. We are able to find one for the Moyal plane through the limit of a sequence obtained by finite dimensional projections of the representative of an element belonging to a multiplier algebra, onto the subspaces of the total Hilbert space, occurring in the spectral triple and spanned by the eigen-spinors of the respective Dirac operator. This is in contrast with the fuzzy sphere, where the upper bound, which is given by the geodesic of a commutative sphere is never reached for any finite $n$-representation of $SU(2)$. Indeed, for the case of maximal non-commutativity ($n = 1/2$), the finite distance is shown to coincide exactly with the above mentioned lower bound, with the transverse component playing no role. This, however starts changing from $n=1$ onwards and we try to improve the estimate of the finite distance and provide an almost exact result, using our new and modified algorithm.

Connes distance function on fuzzy sphere and the connection between geometry and statistics

An algorithm to compute Connes spectral distance, adaptable to the Hilbert-Schmidt operatorial formulation of non-commutative quantum mechanics, was developed earlier by introducing the appropriate spectral triple and used to compute infinitesimal distances in the Moyal plane, revealing a deep connection between geometry and statistics. In this paper, using the same algorithm, the Connes spectral distance has been calculated in the Hilbert-Schmidt operatorial formulation for the fuzzy sphere whose spatial coordinates satisfy the $su(2)$ algebra. This has been computed for both the discrete, as well as for the Perelemov's $SU(2)$ coherent state. Here also, we get a connection between geometry and statistics which is shown by computing the infinitesimal distance between mixed states on the quantum Hilbert space of a particular fuzzy sphere, indexed by $n\in\mathbb{Z}/2$.

On the role of Schwinger's SU(2) generators for Simple Harmonic Oscillator in 2D Moyal plane

The Hilbert-Schmidt operator formulation of non-commutative quantum mechanics in 2D Moyal plane is shown to allow one to construct Schwinger's SU(2) generators. Using this the SU(2) symmetry aspect of both commutative and non-commutative harmonic oscillator are studied and compared. Particularly, in the non-commutative case we demonstrate the existence of a critical point in the parameter space of mass and angular frequency where there is a manifest SU(2) symmetry for a unphysical harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian built out of commuting (unphysical yet covariantly transforming under SU(2)) position like observable. The existence of this critical point is shown to be a novel aspect in non-commutative harmonic oscillator, which is exploited to obtain the spectrum and the observable mass and angular frequency parameters of the physical oscillator-which is generically different from the bare parameters occurring in the Hamiltonian. Finally, we show that a Zeeman term in the Hamiltonian of non-commutative physical harmonic oscillator, is solely responsible for both SU(2) and time reversal symmetry breaking.

Thermal effective potential in two- and three- dimensional non-commutative spaces

Thermal correlation functions and the associated effective statistical potential are computed in two- and three-dimensional non-commutative space using an operator formulation that makes no reference to a star product. The corresponding results for the Moyal and Voros star products are then easily obtained by taking the corresponding overlap with Moyal and Voros bases. The forms of the correlation function and the effective potential are found to be the same, except that in the Voros case the thermal length undergoes a non-commutative deformation, ensuring that it has a lower bound of the order of $\sqrtθ$. It is shown that in a suitable basis (called here quasi-commutative) in the multi-particle sector the thermal correlation function coincides with the commutative result both in the Moyal and Voros cases, with an appropriate non-commutative correction to the thermal length in the Voros case, and that the Pauli principle is restored.

Non-commutative Quantum Mechanics in Three Dimensions and Rotational Symmetry

We generalize the formulation of non-commutative quantum mechanics to three dimensional non-commutative space. Particular attention is paid to the identification of the quantum Hilbert space in which the physical states of the system are to be represented, the construction of the representation of the rotation group on this space, the deformation of the Leibnitz rule accompanying this representation and the implied necessity of deforming the co-product to restore the rotation symmetry automorphism. This also implies the breaking of rotational invariance on the level of the Schroedinger action and equation as well as the Hamiltonian, even for rotational invariant potentials. For rotational invariant potentials the symmetry breaking results purely from the deformation in the sense that the commutator of the Hamiltonian and angular momentum is proportional to the deformation.

A unifying perspective on the Moyal and Voros products and their physical meanings

The Moyal and Voros formulations of non-commutative quantum field theory has been a point of controversy in the recent past. Here we address this issue in the context of non-commutative non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In particular we show that the two formulations simply correspond to two different representations associated with two different choices of basis on the quantum Hilbert space. From a mathematical perspective the two formulations are therefore completely equivalent, but we also argue that only the Voros formulaton admits a consistent physical interpretation. These considerations are elucidated by considering the free particle transition amplitude in the two representations.
