Constraints on invisible Higgs decay in MSSM in the light of diphoton rates from the LHC

We examine the parameter space of the purely phenomenological minimal super- symmetric standard model (MSSM), without assuming any supersymmetry breaking scheme. We find that a large region of the parameter space can indeed yield the lightest neutral Higgs mass around 125 GeV, as suggested by the recent ATLAS data, and also lead to event rates around, or slightly higher than, the standard model expectation in the two-photon and four-lepton channels. Using a lightest neutralino that is considerably lighter than the Higgs, we find that the 'invisible' decay of the Higgs into a pair of neutralinos upto about 10% can be consistent with the current data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Same-sign trileptons at the LHC: a window to lepton-number violating supersymmetry

We present a detailed investigation to establish that lepton-number (L) violating supersymmetry (SUSY) can be effectively probed at the LHC in the practically background-free same-sign trilepton (SS3l) and same-sign four-lepton (SS4l) channels. With this in view, we extend our earlier analysis of SS3l and SS4l signals by considering situations based on minimal supergravity as well as a phenomenological SUSY model. We find that the R-parity violating scenario predicts large event rates, for both the 7 and 14 TeV runs. Furthermore, we show that it is extremely unlikely to ever achieve similar rates in R-parity conserving SUSY. In addition, we show how SS3l and SS4l, in conjunction with the mixed-sign trilepton and four-lepton channels, can be used to extract dynamical information about the underlying SUSY theory, namely, the Majorana character of the decaying lightest neutralino and the nature of L-violating couplings. We define suitable variables and relationships between them which can be verified experimentally and which are largely independent of the SUSY production cross-sections and the cascade decay branching fractions. These theoretical predictions are validated by Monte Carlo simulations including detector and background effects.

Matter-gravity interaction in a multiply warped braneworld,

The role of a bulk graviton in predicting the signature of extra dimensions through collider-based experiments is explored in the context of a multiply warped spacetime. In particular it is shown that in a doubly warped braneworld model, the presence of the sixth dimension, results in enhanced concentration of graviton Kaluza Klein (KK) modes compared to that obtained in the usual 5-dimensional Randall-Sundrum model. Also, the couplings of these massive graviton KK modes with the matter fields on the visible brane turn out to be appreciably larger than that in the corresponding 5- dimensional model. The significance of these results are discussed in the context of KK graviton search at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

CP-violating HWW couplings at the Large Hadron Collider

We investigate the possibility of probing an anomalous CP-violating coupling in the HWW vertex at the LHC. We consider the production of the Higgs in association of a W and then decay via the $H \rightarrow WW$ channel taking into account the limits on the Higgs production cross section from the Tevatron. We select the same-sign dilepton final state arising from leptonic decays of two of the three Ws and apply cuts required to suppress the standard model background. Several kinematical distributions and asymmetries that can be used to ascertain the presence of a non-zero anomalous coupling are presented. We find that, for Higgs mass in the range 130-150 GeV and anomalous couplings allowed by the Tevatron data, these distributions can be studied with an integrated luminosity of 30-50 fb$^{-1}$ at the 14 TeV run. Attention is specifically drawn to some asymmetries that enable one to probe the real and imaginary parts (as well as their signs) of the anomalous coupling, in a complementary manner. We also explicitly demonstrate that showering and hadronisation do not affect the utility of these variables, thus affirming the validity of parton level calculations.

Signals of an invisibly decaying Higgs in a scalar dark matter scenario: a study for the Large Hadron Collider

We consider the collider phenomenology of a singlet Majoron model with softly broken lepton number. Lepton number is spontaneously broken when the real part of a new singlet scalar develops vacuum expectation value. With the additional soft terms violating lepton numbers, the imaginary part of this singlet scalar becomes a massive pseudo-Majoron which can account for the dark matter. In presence of the coupling of the pseudo-Majoron with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs, the SM Higgs mostly decays into a pair of pseudo-Majorons, giving rise to missing transverse energy signals at a hadron collider. Since the Higgs visible decay branching fractions get reduced in presence of this invisible decay mode, the bounds on the SM Higgs mass from the LEP and Tevatron experiments get diluted and the invisible decay channel of the Higgs become important for the discovery of low mass Higgs at the Large Hadron Collider.

Signatures of supersymmetry with non-universal Higgs mass at the Large Hadron Collider

We discuss large non-universality in the Higgs sector at high scale in supersymmetric theories, in the context of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In particular, we note that if ${m_{H_u}}^2-{m_{H_d}}^2$ is large and negative ($\simeq 10^6 {\rm ~GeV^2}$) at high scale, the lighter slepton mass eigenstates at the electroweak scale are mostly left chiral, in contrast to a minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) scenario. We use this feature to distinguish between non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM) and mSUGRA by two methods. First, we study final states with same-sign ditaus. We find that an asymmetry parameter reflecting the polarization of the taus provides a notable distinction. In addition, we study a charge asymmetry in the jet-lepton invariant mass distribution, arising from decay chains of left-chiral squarks leading to leptons of the first two families, which sets apart an NUHM scenario of the above kind.

Low-scale SUSY breaking by modular fields and Higgs mass bounds

We consider a scenario where supersymmetry (SUSY) is broken at a relatively low scale by modular fields of extra compact spacelike dimensions. The effect of both soft and hard SUSY breaking terms on the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs boson are investigated. An important conclusion is that the lightest neutral Higgs can be considerably more massive than what is expected in the MSSM, if the overseeing theory breaks SUSY at a scale not too far above a TeV. An explicit model that implements this has been shown for illustration.

Discrimination of low missing energy look-alikes at the LHC

The problem of discriminating possible scenarios of TeV scale new physics with large missing energy signature at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has received some attention in the recent past. We consider the complementary, and yet unexplored, case of theories predicting much softer missing energy spectra. As there is enough scope for such models to fake each other by having similar final states at the LHC, we have outlined a systematic method based on a combination of different kinematic features which can be used to distinguish among different possibilities. These features often trace back to the underlying mass spectrum and the spins of the new particles present in these models. As examples of "low missing energy look-alikes", we consider Supersymmetry with R-parity violation, Universal Extra Dimensions with both KK-parity conserved and KK-parity violated and the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity violated by the Wess-Zumino-Witten anomaly term. Through detailed Monte Carlo analysis of the four and higher lepton final states predicted by these models, we show that the models in their minimal forms may be distinguished at the LHC, while non-minimal variations can always leave scope for further confusion. We find that, for strongly interacting new particle mass-scale ~600 GeV (1 TeV), the simplest versions of the different theories can be discriminated at the LHC running at sqrt{s}=14 TeV within an integrated luminosity of 5 (30) fb^{-1}.

R-parity violating resonant stop production at the Large Hadron Collider

We have investigated the resonant production of a stop at the Large Hadron Collider, driven by baryon number violating interactions in supersymmetry. We work in the framework of minimal supergravity models with the lightest neutralino being the lightest supersymmetric particle which decays within the detector. We look at various dilepton and trilepton final states, with or without b-tags. A detailed background simulation is performed, and all possible decay modes of the lighter stop are taken into account. We find that higher stop masses are sometimes easier to probe, through the decay of the stop into the third or fourth neutralino and their subsequent cascades. We also comment on the detectability of such signals during the 7 TeV run, where, as expected, only relatively light stops can be probed. Our conclusion is that the resonant process may be probed, at both 10 and 14 TeV, with the R-parity violating coupling λ"_{312} as low as 0.05, for a stop mass of about 1 TeV. The possibility of distinguishing between resonant stop production and pair-production is also discussed.

Same-sign trileptons and four-leptons as signatures of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider

We point out that same-sign multilepton events, not given due attention yet for new physics search, can be extremely useful at the Large Hadron Collider. After showing the easy reducibility of the standard model backgrounds, we demonstrate the viability of same-sign trilepton signals for R-parity breaking supersymmetry, at both 7 and 14 TeV. We find that same-sign four-leptons, too, can have appreciable rates. Same-sign trileptons are also expected, for example, in Little Higgs theories with T-parity broken by anomaly terms.

Radiative contribution to neutrino masses and mixing in $μν$SSM

In an extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (popularly known as the $μν$SSM), three right handed neutrino superfields are introduced to solve the $μ$-problem and to accommodate the non-vanishing neutrino masses and mixing. Neutrino masses at the tree level are generated through $R-$parity violation and seesaw mechanism. We have analyzed the full effect of one-loop contributions to the neutrino mass matrix. We show that the current three flavour global neutrino data can be accommodated in the $μν$SSM, for both the tree level and one-loop corrected analyses. We find that it is relatively easier to accommodate the normal hierarchical mass pattern compared to the inverted hierarchical or quasi-degenerate case, when one-loop corrections are included.

Dilepton and Four-Lepton Signals at the LHC in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-parity Violation

In the presence of the T-parity violating Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) anomaly term, the otherwise stable heavy photon A_H in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) decays to either Standard Model (SM) gauge boson pairs, or to SM fermions via loop diagrams. We make a detailed study of the collider signatures where the A_H can be reconstructed from invariant mass peaks in the opposite sign same flavor dilepton or the four-lepton channels. This enables us to obtain information about the fundamental symmetry breaking scale f in the LHT and thereby the low-lying mass spectrum of the theory. In addition, indication of the presence of the WZW term gives us hints of the possible UV completion of the LHT via strong dynamics. The crucial observation is that the sum of all production processes of heavy T-odd quark pairs has a sizeable cross-section at the LHC and these T-odd particles eventually all cascade decay down to the heavy photon A_H. We show that for certain regions of the parameter space with either a small f of around 500 GeV or relatively light T-odd quarks with a mass of around 400 GeV, one can reconstruct the A_H even at the early LHC run with \sqrt{s}=10 TeV and a modest integrated luminosity of 200 pb^{-1}. At \sqrt{s} = 14 TeV and with an integrated luminosity of 30 fb^{-1}, it is possible to cover a large part of the typical parameter space of the LHT, with the scale f up to 1.5 TeV and with T-odd quark masses almost up to 1 TeV. In this region of the parameter space, the mass of the reconstructed A_H ranges from 66 GeV to 230 GeV.

Non-universal scalar mass scenario with Higgs funnel region of SUSY dark matter: a signal-based analysis for the Large Hadron Collider

We perform a multilepton channel analysis in the context of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) compatible points in a model with non-universal scalar masses, which admits a Higgs funnel region of supersymmetry dark matter even for a small $\tanβ$. In addition to two and three-lepton final states, four-lepton events, too, are shown to be useful for this purpose. We also compare the collider signatures in similar channels for WMAP compatible points in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) framework with similar gluino masses. Some definite features of such non-universal scenario emerge from the analysis.

Bulk Higgs field in a Randall-Sundrum model with nonvanishing brane cosmological constant

We consider the possibility of Higgs mechanism in the bulk in a generalised Randall-Sundrum model, where a nonvanishing cosmological constant is induced on the visible brane. This scenario has the advantage of accommodating positive tension of the visible brane and thus ensures stability of the model. It is shown that several problems usually associated with this mechanism are avoided if some dimensionful parameters in the bulk are allowed to lie a little below the Planck mass. The most important of these is keeping the lowest massive mode in the scale of the standard electroweak model, and at the same time reducing the gauge coupling of the next excited state, thus ameliorating otherwise stringent phenomenological constraints.

Chargino reconstruction in supersymmetry with long-lived staus

We consider a supersymmetric (SUSY) scenario including right-handed neutrinos, one of whose scalar superpartners is the lightest SUSY particle (LSP). The distinguishing feature in the collider signal of SUSY in such a case is not missing energy but a pair of charged tracks corresponding to the next-to- lightest SUSY particle, when it is, as in the case considered, a stau. Following up on our recent work on neutralino reconstruction in such cases, we explore the possibility of reconstructing charginos, too, through a study of transverse mass distributions in specified final states. The various steps of isolating the transverse momenta of neutrinos relevant for this are outlined, and regions of the parameter space where our procedure works are identified.

Neutrino masses, the cosmological constant and a stable universe in a Randall-Sundrum scenario

The Randall-Sundrum model of warped geometry in a five-dimensional scenario, aimed at explaining the hierarchy between the Planck and electroweak scales, is intrinsically unstable in its minimal form due to negative tension of the visible brane. A proposed solution to the problem yields a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions. We show that this wrong-sign cosmological constant is restricted to small values, therefore requiring less cancellation from hitherto unknown physics, if bulk neutrinos are postulated to explain the observed neutrino mass pattern. Thus neutrino masses, a stable Tev-brane configuration and new physics in the context of the cosmological constant get rather suggestively connected by the same thread.

Signals of supersymmetry with inaccessible first two families at the Large Hadron Collider

We investigate the signals of supersymmetry (SUSY) in a scenario where only the third family squarks and sleptons can be produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in addition to the gluino, charginos and neutralinos. The final states in such cases are marked by a multiplicity of top and/or bottom quarks. We study in particular, the case when the stop, sbottom and gluino masses are near the TeV scale due to which, the final state t's and b's are very energetic. We point out the difficulty in b-tagging and identifying energetic tops and suggest several event selection criteria which allow the signals to remain significantly above the standard model background. We show that such scenarios with gluino mass up to 2 TeV can be successfully probed at the LHC. Information on $\tan β$ can also be obtained by looking at associated Higgs production in the cascades of accompanying neutralinos. We also show that a combined analysis of event rates in the different channels and the effective mass distribution allows one to differentiate this scenario from the one where all three sfermion families are accessible.

Unitarity violation in sequential neutrino mixing in a model of extra dimensions

We investigate the possibility of unitarity violation in the sequential neutrino mixing matrix in a scenario with extra compact spacelike dimensions. Gauge singlet neutrinos are assumed to propagate in one extra dimension, giving rise to an infinite tower of states in the effective four-dimensional theory. It is shown that this leads to small lepton-number violating entries in the neutrino mass matrix, which can violate unitarity on the order of one per cent.
