Study of (3He, t) charge exchange reactions to isobaric analog states in inverse kinematics

The transition between isobaric analog states (IAS) in the (3He, t) charge exchange reaction presents a unique opportunity to access the isospin structure of the nuclei. In this study not only the Fermi transition but also the Gamow-Teller (G-T) transition of the IAS reaction were investigated for the 13,14C(3He, t) and 17,18,19,20O(3He, t) reactions, in order to explore the neutron number dependence of the IAS reaction for the light neutron-rich nuclei. It was found that the G-T type IAS reaction also exhibited a significant dependence of the transition strength on the neutron number and the angular momentum configuration of the nuclei. Additionally, the inverse kinematics was also discussed for extracting the yields of the interested reaction channels in the proposed experiments on radioactive beams. The calculated triton yields demonstrated the capability of the proposed experiments to obtain meaningful results.

The clamped intensity of femtosecond laser pulses varying with gas pressure in the presence of external focusing

We perform a theoretical investigation of the clamped laser intensity inside the filament plasma as a function of gas pressure with external focusing. Unlike the clamped intensity under the selffocusing condition, which is independent on the gas pressure, the clamped intensity with external focusing decreases with the gas pressure. Our findings can explain the changes of the signals of femtosecond-laser-induced 391-nm forward emission and fluorescence with the nitrogen gas pressure.

A sealed ceramic GEM-based neutron detector

The GEM-based neutron detector has flourished in the past decade. However almost all the GEM-based neutron detectors work in the flow-gas mode, and the long-term performances of the detectors may be unstable due to the dynamic changes of atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. In this paper, a sealed ceramic GEM-based neutron detector was developed at China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) and its sensitive area was 100 mm * 100 mm. The characterizations of the detector were presented and discussed, which included the plateau curve, the neutron beam profile, the neutron wavelength spectrum, the spatial resolution (FWHM: 2.77 mm), the two-dimensional (2D) imaging ability, the neutron detection efficiency and the counting rate instability (Relative Standard Deviation (RSD): 0.7%). The results show that the detector has good performances in sealed mode, and it can be used for the measurement of the direct neutron beam at CSNS.

Ultrafast dynamic evolution of multilevel systems in medium-strength laser fields

The ultrafast dynamic evolution of an atomic system under medium-strength laser fields is studied by performing transient absorption measurement. An analytical model developed from perturbation theory with a modified transition dipole moment is presented to explain the spectral features of the multilevel system. By fitting the measured absorption spectra to the model, the system's dynamic evolution is quantified by different amplitude and phase modulation factors in the pump--probe and probe--pump scenarios. This study provides a way to understand laser--matter interaction in the transition area between the strong-field and weak-field regimes.

A fast spatial resolution optimizing method for track-ion using a GEM detector based on the time information

In this work, a fast method of vertex reconstructing for incident ions in GEM detectors was proposed. As inspired by the Time Projection Chamber (TPC), the time information of the consecutive signal samples from Front End Electronics (FEE) was employed. To demonstrate the method, an experiment involving a 2D-readout THGEM detector with an APV-25 FEE was taken. With one experiment dependent parameter in the analysis, the proposed method led to a spatial resolution of 0.45 mm, compared with the same number of 9.10 mm from the traditional center of gravity method.

Experimental Study of Boron-coated Straws with a Neutron Source

Multiple types of high quality neutron detectors are proposed for the first phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), which will be commissioned in 2018. Considering the shortage of 3He supply, a detector module composed of 49 boron-coated straws (BCS) was developed by Proportional Technologies Inc. (PTI). Each straw has a length of 1000 mm and a diameter of 7.5 mm. Seven straws are tightly packed in a tube, and seven tubes are organized in a row to form a detector module. The charge division method is used for longitudinal positioning. A specific readout system was utilized to output the signal and simultaneously encode each straw. The performance of this detector module was studied using a moderated 252Cf source at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP). The signal amplitude spectrum indicates its n-gamma discrimination capability. Despite the complex readout method, a longitudinal resolution of 6.1-0.5 mm was obtained. The three-dimensional positioning ability qualifies this BCS detector module as a promising neutron scattering spectrometer detector.

Design of a large dynamic range readout unit for the PSD detector of DAMPE

A large dynamic range is required by the Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) of DArk Matter Paricle Explorer (DAMPE), and a double-dynode readout has been developed. To verify this design, a prototype detector module has been constructed and tested with cosmic rays and heavy ion beams. The results match with the estimation and the readout unit could easily cover the required dynamic range.

Track identification and reconstruction in fast neutron detection by MPGD

Micro pattern gaseous detectors have been widely used in position measurements of particle detection in the last two decades. In this work a novel method of track identification and reconstruction was developed for fast neutron detection by MPGD, which in most cases requires a strong rejection of the gamma background. Based on this method, an online tracking system can be built in a FPGA-based Daq system to significantly improve both the capability of counting rate and the spatial resolution. This work also offers a potential usage in future hadron experiments such as SoLID spectrometer in Jeffereson Lab.

Simultaneous observation of forward-backward attosecond photoelectron holography

Photoelectron angular momentum distribution of He+ driven by a few-cycle laser is investigated numerically. We simultaneously observe two dominant interference patterns with one shot of lasers by solving the 3D time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE). The analysis of a semiclassical model identifies these two interference patterns as two kinds of photoelectron holography. The interference pattern with Pz > 0 is a kind of forward rescattering holography, which comes from the interference between direct (reference) and rescattered (signal) forward electrons ionized in the same quarter-cycle. The interference pattern with Pz < 0 is a kind of backward rescattering holography, which comes from the interference between direct electron ionized in the third quarter- cycle and rescattered backward electron ionized in the first quarter-cycle. Moreover, we propose a method to distinguish this backward rescattering holography and intracycle interference patterns of direct electrons. This is an important step for dynamic imaging of molecular structure and detecting electron in molecules on attosecond time scale by the backward rescattering attosecond photonelectron holography.

A versatile PMT test bench and its application in the DAMPE-PSD

A versatile test bench system, dedicated for massive PMT characterization, is developed at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It can perform many test contents with large capacity and high level of automation, and the migration from one testing configuration to another is lightweight and time-saving. This system has been used in the construction of the Plastic Scintillator Detector of DArk Matter Particle Explorer already, and a total of 570 Hamamatsu R4443 tubes have been tested successfully.

Elongation of energy exchange between femtosecond laser pulses via plasma formation in air

We experimentally demonstrate energy exchange between a delay-tuned femtosecond beam and two delay-fixed ones as they spatiotemporally overlapped and experienced filamentation in air. The energy exchange process in the relative time delay is dramatically elongated up to 40 ps in the presence of plasma grating, indicating that filamentary beams coupling may be an effective method for filament control.
