Radiative Energy Loss in a Temperature-Evolving QGP with Dynamical Constituents

We present a theoretical formalism for calculating first-order-in-opacity radiative energy loss that incorporates the spatial and temporal temperature evolution of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in a finite-size QCD medium with dynamical (i.e., moving) constituents. The derived expressions allow for arbitrary temperature profiles, enabling detailed evaluations of radiative energy loss across different medium-evolution scenarios. Importantly, the resulting kernel applies to both single partons (R = 0) and jets (R > 0) via an out-of-cone selection, providing a unified starting point for precision QGP tomography.

Can high-$p_\perp$ theory and data constrain $η/s$?

Understanding the temperature dependence of the specific shear viscosity $(η/s)$ is crucial for characterizing the properties of the QCD matter produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Since, low-$p_\perp$ theory and data are only weakly sensitive to the typical forms of $η/s(T)$, especially at high temperatures, we use high-$p_\perp$ data and theory to impose additional constraints on it. Our approach, based on dynamical radiative and collisional energy loss of high-$p_\perp$ particles, provides promising results in constraining the temperature dependence of $η/s$.

Magnetic effects in the Hadron Resonance Gas

We discuss the modeling of the hadronic phase of QCD at finite magnetic field in the framework of hadron resonance gas (HRG). We focus on the statistical description of particle yields that include contribution from resonance decays. We demonstrate that the swift increase in the number of protons with magnetic field predicted in the HRG is due to the ill-defined description of higher-spin states. We discuss fluctuations of conserved charges and show that at present the qualitative comparison of the model predictions with the Lattice QCD data should be treated with care. We also discuss the principle of detailed balance which allows to study the magnetic field dependence of neutral resonances.

Probing the shape of the quark-gluon plasma droplet via event-by-event QGP tomography

This study investigates Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in heavy-ion collisions through two avenues: high-$p_{\perp}$ frameworks and hydrodynamic modeling. Using the T$_{\text{R}}$ENTo model, we find that IP-Glasma mimicking $p=0$ value aligns well with high-$p_{\perp}$ data, in agreement with Bayesian analysis of the low-$p_{\perp}$ regime. While adjusting $p$ values may improve a fit to a particular high-$p_{\perp}$ observable, it does not permit an earlier onset of transverse expansion.

Constraining $η/s$ through high-p$_\perp$ theory and data

We study whether it is possible to use high-$p_\perp$ data/theory to constrain the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity over entropy density ratio $η/s$ of the matter formed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We use two approaches: i) We calculate high-$p_\perp$ $R_{AA}$ and flow coefficients $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$ assuming different $(η/s)(T)$ of the fluid-dynamically evolving medium. ii) We calculate the quenching strength ($\hat{q}/T^3$) from our dynamical energy loss model and convert it to $η/s$ as a function of temperature. It turned out that the first approach can not distinguish between different $(η/s)(T)$ assumptions when the evolution is constrained to reproduce the low-$p_\perp$ data. In distinction, $(η/s)(T)$ calculated using the second approach agrees surprisingly well with the $(η/s)(T)$ inferred through state-of-the-art Bayesian analyses of the low-$p_\perp$ data even in the vicinity of $T_c$, while providing much smaller uncertainties at high temperatures.

Collective modes of gluons in an anisotropic thermo-magnetic medium

We study the collective modes of gluons in an anisotropic thermal medium in the presence of a constant background magnetic field using the hard-thermal loop (HTL) perturbation theory. The momentum space anisotropy of the medium has been incorporated through the generalized $`$Romatschke-Strickland' form of the distribution function, whereas, the magnetic modification arising from the quark loop contribution has been taken into account in the lowest Landau level approximation. We consider two special cases: (i) a spheroidal anisotropy with the anisotropy vector orthogonal to the external magnetic field and (ii) an ellipsoidal anisotropy with two mutually orthogonal vectors describing aniostropies along and orthogonal to the field direction. The general structure of the polarization tensor in both cases are equivalent and consists of six independent basis tensors. We find that the introduction of momentum anisotropy ingrains azimuthal angular dependence in the thermo-magnetic collective modes. Our study suggests that the presence of a strong background magnetic field can significantly reduce the growth rate of the unstable modes which may have important implications in the equilibration of magnetized quark-gluon plasma.

Anisotropic pressure and quark number susceptibility of strongly magnetized QCD medium

In this work, we compute the hard thermal loop pressure of quark-gluon plasma within strong magnetic field approximation at one-loop order. Magnetic field breaks the rotational symmetry of the system. As a result, the pressure of QGP becomes anisotropic and one finds two different pressures along the longitudinal (along the magnetic field direction) and transverse direction. Similarly, the second-order quark number susceptibility, which represents the fluctuation of the net quark number density, also becomes anisotropic. We compute the second order QNS of deconfined QCD matter in strong field approximation considering same chemical potential for two quark flavors.

Chiral susceptibility in dense thermo-magnetic QCD medium within HTL approximation

We have computed the chiral susceptibility in quark-gluon plasma in presence of finite chemical potential and weak magnetic field within hard thermal loop approximation. First we construct the massive effective quark propagator in a thermomagnetic medium. Then we obtain completely analytic expression for the chiral susceptibility in weak magnetic field approximation. In the absence of magnetic field the thermal chiral susceptibility increases in presence of finite chemical potential. The effect of thermomagnetic correction is found to be very marginal as temperature is the dominant scale in weak field approximation.

Dynamics of QCD Matter -- current status

In this article, there are 18 sections discussing various current topics in the field of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and related phenomena, which will serve as a snapshot of the current state of the art. Section 1 reviews experimental results of some recent light-flavored particle production data from ALICE collaboration. Other sections are mostly theoretical in nature. Very strong but transient magnetic field created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions could have important observational consequences. This has generated a lot of theoretical activity in the last decade. Sections 2, 7, 9, 10 and 11 deal with the effects of the magnetic field on the properties of the QCD matter. There are several unanswered questions about the QCD phase diagram. Sections 3, 11 and 18 discuss various aspects of the QCD phase diagram and phase transitions. Recent years have witnessed interesting developments in foundational aspects of hydrodynamics and their application to heavy-ion collisions. Sections 12, 15, 16 and 17 of this article probe some aspects of this exciting field. Transport coefficients together with their temperature- and density-dependence, are essential inputs in hydrodynamical calculations. Sections 5, 8 and 14 deal with calculation/estimation of various transport coefficients (shear and bulk viscosity, thermal conductivity, relaxation times, etc.) of quark matter and hadronic matter. Sections 4, 6 and 13 deals with interesting new developments in the field. Section 4 discusses color dipole gluon distribution function at small transverse momentum in the form of a series of Bells polynomials. Section 6 discusses the properties of Higgs boson in the quark gluon plasma using Higgs-quark interaction. Section 13 discusses modification of coalescence model to incorporate viscous corrections and application of this model.

Covariant formulation of gluon self-energy in presence of ellipsoidal anisotropy

In this work, a covariant formulation of the gluon self-energy in presence of ellipsoidal anisotropy is considered. It is shown that the general structure of the gluon self-energy can be written in terms of six linearly independent projection tensors. Similar to the spheroidal anisotropy, mass scales can be introduced for each of the collective modes considering the static limits. With a simplified ellipsoidal generalization of the Romatschke-Strickland form, the angular dependencies of the mass scales are studied. It is observed that, compared to the spheroidal case, additional unstable mode may appear in presence of ellipsoidal anisotropy depending upon the choice of the parameters.

Second-order quark number susceptibility of deconfined QCD matter in the presence of a magnetic field

Considering the strong field approximation we compute the hard thermal loop pressure at finite temperature and chemical potential of hot and dense deconfined QCD matter in lowest Landau level in one-loop order. We consider the anisotropic pressure in the presence of the strong magnetic field i.e., longitudinal and transverse pressure along parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field direction. As a first effort, we compute and discuss the anisotropic quark number susceptibility of deconfined QCD matter in lowest Landau level. The longitudinal quark number susceptibility is found to increase with the temperature whereas the transverse one decreases with the temperature. We also compute the quark number susceptibility in the weak field approximation. We find that the thermomagnetic correction to the quark number susceptibility is very marginal in the weak field approximation.

Soft contribution to the damping rate of a hard photon in a weakly magnetized hot medium

We consider weakly magnetized hot QED plasma comprising electrons and positrons. There are three distinct dispersive (longitudinal and two transverse) modes of a photon in a thermo-magnetic medium. At lowest order in coupling constant, photon is damped in this medium via Compton scattering and pair creation process. We evaluate the damping rate of hard photon by calculating the imaginary part of the each transverse dispersive modes in a thermo-magnetic QED medium. We note that one of the fermions in the loop of one-loop photon self-energy is considered as soft and the other one is hard. Considering the resummed fermion propagator in a weakly magnetized medium for the soft fermion and the Schwinger propagator for hard fermion, we calculate the soft contribution to the damping rate of hard photon. In weak field approximation the thermal and thermo-magnetic contributions to damping rate get separated out for each transverse dispersive mode. The total damping rate for each dispersive mode in presence of magnetic field is found to be reduced than that of the thermal one. This formalism can easily be extended to QCD plasma.

Pressure of a weakly magnetized hot and dense deconfined QCD matter in one-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory

We consider our recently obtained general structure of two point (self-energy and propagator) functions of quarks and gluons in a nontrivial background like a heat bath and an external magnetic field. Based on this, here we have computed free energy and pressure of quarks and gluons for a magnetized hot and dense deconfined QCD matter in weak field approximation. For heat bath we have used hard thermal loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) in presence of finite chemical potential. For weak field approximations we have obtained the pressure of QCD matter, both with and without the high temperature expansion. The results with high $T$ expansions are completely analytic and gauge independent but depends on the renormalization scale in addition to the temperature, chemical potential and the external magnetic field. We also discuss the modification of QCD Debye mass of such matter for an arbitrary magnetic field. Analytic expressions for Debye mass are also obtained for both strong and weak field approximation. It is found to exhibit some interesting features depending upon the three different scales, i.e, the quark mass, temperature and the strength of the magnetic field. The various divergences appearing in the quark and gluon free energies are regulated through appropriate counter terms. In weak field approximation, the low temperature behavior of the pressure is found to strongly depend on the magnetic field than that at high temperature. We also discuss the specific problem with one-loop HTLpt associated with the over-counting of certain orders in coupling.

General structure of gauge boson propagator and its spectra in a hot magnetized medium

Based on transversality condition of gauge boson self-energy we have systematically constructed the general structure of the gauge boson two-point functions using four linearly independent basis tensors in presence of a nontrivial background, i.e., hot magnetized material medium. The hard thermal loop approximation has been used for the heat bath to compute various form factors associated with the gauge boson's two point functions both in strong and weak field approximation. We have also analyzed the dispersion of a gauge boson (e.g., gluon) using the effective propagator both in strong and weak magnetic field approximation. The formalism is also applicable to QED. The presence of only thermal background leads to a longitudinal (plasmon) mode and a two-fold degenerate transverse mode. In presence of a hot magnetized background medium the degeneracy of the two transverse modes is lifted and one gets three quasiparticle modes. In weak field approximation one gets two transverse modes and one plasmon mode. On the other hand, in strong field approximation also one gets the three modes in Lowest Landau Level. The general structure of two-point function may be useful for computing the thermo-magnetic correction of various quantities associated with a gauge boson.

Anisotropic pressure of deconfined QCD matter in presence of strong magnetic field within one-loop approximation

Considering the general structure of the two point functions of quarks and gluons, we compute the free energy and pressure of a strongly magnetized hot and dense QCD matter created in heavy-ion collisions. In presence of strong magnetic field we found that the deconfined QCD matter exhibits a paramagnetic nature. One gets different pressure in a direction parallel and perpendicular to magnetic field due to the magnetization acquired by the system. We obtain both longitudinal and transverse pressure, and magnetization of a hot deconfined QCD matter in presence of magnetic field. We have used hard thermal loop approximation (HTL) for heat bath. We obtained completely analytic expression for pressure and magnetization under certain approximation. Various divergences appearing in free energy are regulated using appropriate counter terms. The obtained anisotropic pressure may be useful for magnetohydrodynamics description of a hot and dense deconfined QCD matter produced in heavy-ion collisions.
