Finite-size effects in amorphous thin Co$_{70}$Zr$_{30}$ layers

Profound finite size effects are observed in both the moment and ordering temperature in thin Co$_{70}$Zr$_{30}$ layers. The results are consistent with the presence of interface regions with reduced magnetic interactions and moment. The extension of this region is determined to be around 1 nm thick at each interface. Above and near the apparent critical temperature, the magnetic properties can be understood in terms of Griffith phases.

Dynamic stabilisation of mesospin chains

We present a rare example of a one-dimensional system with short-range range interactions for which a self-stabilizing long-range ordered phase persists to finite temperatures. Our model offers a new perspective on the origins of shape anisotropy on the mesoscopic scale in magnetic metamaterials. Specifically, we show how the combination of a physically realistic stray-field potential and the spatial dimensionality of the system can reduce the effective dimensionality of classical magnetic mesospins. The resulting emergent constraints on the magnetic excitation spectrum underpin the observed ordering, in stark contrast to the behaviour of analogous one-dimensional models with strictly isotropic spins.

Quantitative measurement of magnetic dichroic signals at sub-nanometer to atomic scale resolution conditions

When aiming for atomic resolution electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) in STEM mode, the high convergence angle of the electron probe can lead to unforeseen artefacts and strong reductions of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) in the measurement of magnetic magnitudes. In this work, the EMCD signal is measured in STEM mode at semi-convergence angles ranging from α=\ 2-10\ mrad\ using iron samples with high structural perfection. We observe that the relative EMCD signal remains very similar for all convergence angles, which is in good agreement with simulations. The improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio as compared to earlier works is due to better crystalline quality of the Fe sample, high control of the sample orientation, better control over sample thickness, and factors such as higher beam current and the use of a fast and sensitive hybrid-pixel electron detector. One of the key factors to remove experimental ambivalences is the use of an acquisition geometry where the two conjugate EMCD spectra are acquired simultaneously. Furthermore the high crystalline quality Fe sample enables the acquisition of statistical entities of spectra at the same sample orientation, which in turn results in high SNR EMCD signals. We obtain high SNR EMCD signals for all semi convergence angles and could measure the orbital to spin magnetic moment ratio ml/ms with high precision. We observed that at high convergence angles, the ml/ms ratio gets sensitive to minute changes in sample orientation.

Exponential Dependence of Interlayer Exchange Coupling in Fe/MgO(001) Superlattices on Temperature

The interlayer exchange coupling in Fe/MgO(001) superlattices is found to increase exponentially with decreasing temperature. Around 150~K, the field induced response changes from discrete switching, governed by field-driven domain propagation, to a collective rotation of the magnetic layers. This transition is accompanied by a change in the magnetic ground state from 180$^{\circ}$ (antiferromagnetic) to 90$^{\circ}$ alignment between adjacent Fe layers. These effects are argued to arise from quantum well states, defined by the total thickness of the samples.

Single scan STEM-EMCD in 3-beam orientation using a quadruple aperture

The need to acquire multiple angle-resolved electron energy loss spectra (EELS) is one of the several critical challenges associated with electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD) experiments. If the experiments are performed by scanning a nanometer to atomic-sized electron probe on a specific region of a sample, the precision of the local magnetic information extracted from such data highly depends on the accuracy of the spatial registration between multiple scans. For an EMCD experiment in a 3-beam orientation, this means that the same specimen area must be scanned four times while keeping all the experimental conditions same. This is a non-trivial task as there is a high chance of morphological and chemical modification as well as non-systematic local orientation variations of the crystal between the different scans due to beam damage, contamination and spatial drift. In this work, we employ a custom-made quadruple aperture to acquire the four EELS spectra needed for the EMCD analysis in a single electron beam scan, thus removing the above-mentioned complexities. We demonstrate a quantitative EMCD result for a beam convergence angle corresponding to sub-nm probe size and compare the EMCD results for different detector geometries.

Influence of misfit strain on the physical properties of Fe thin films

We investigate the growth of thin Fe layers on MgAl$_2$O$_4$~(001) and MgO~(001) substrates using dc magnetron sputtering. The crystal quality of Fe layers deposited on MgAl$_2$O$_4$ is found to be substantially higher as compared to Fe grown on MgO substrates. The effects of the crystal quality on the magnetic and electronic transport properties are discussed.

Texture fluctuations and emergent dynamics in coupled nanomagnets

We analyse the thermal fluctuations of magnetization textures in two stray field coupled elements, forming mesospins. To this end, the energy landscape associated with the thermal dynamics of the textures is mapped out and asymmetric energy barriers are identified. These barriers are modified by changing the gap that separates the mesospins. Moreover, the coupling between the edges leads to an anisotropy in the curvature of the energy surface at the metastable minima. This yields a dynamic mode splitting of the edge modes and affects the attempt switching frequencies. Thus, we elucidate the mechanism with which the magnons in the thermal bath generate the stochastic fluctuations of the magnetization at the edges.

Emergent anisotropy in magnetic metamaterials

We demonstrate directional dependence of the self-modification of internal mesospin textures in magnetic metamaterials, arising from the coupling of the atomic- and mesoscopic length-scales. Dressing the mesospins in different directions enables the quantification of the degree of texture in the internal magnetization and its impact on the interaction energy of the mesospins. The emerging anisotropy is manifested in a directional dependence of the remanent magnetization with temperature.

Thermal excitations within and among mesospins in artificial spin ice

We provide experimental and numerical evidence for thermal excitations within and among magnetic mesospins, forming artificial spin ice structures. At low temperatures, a decrease in magnetization and increase in susceptibility is observed with increasing temperature, interpreted as an onset of thermal fluctuations of the magnetic texture within the mesospins. At elevated temperatures a pronounced susceptibility peak is observed, related to thermally induced flipping of the mesospins and a collapse of the remanent state. The fluctuations, while occurring at distinct length- and energy-scales, are shown to be tunable by the interaction strength of the mesospins.

Emergent tri-criticality in magnetic metamaterials

Metallic discs engineered on the 100 nm scale have an internal magnetic texture which varies from a fully magnetized state to a vortex state with zero moment. The interplay between this internal structure and the inter-disc interactions is studied in magnetic metamaterials made of square arrays of the magnetic discs. The texture is modeled by a mesospin of varying length with O(2) symmetry and the inter-disc interaction by a nearest neighbour coupling between mesospins. The thermodynamic properties of the model are studied numerically and an ordering transition is found which varies from Kosterlitz-Thouless to first order via an apparent tri-critical point. The effective critical exponent characterising the finite size magnetization evolves from the value for the 2D-XY model to less than half this value at the tri-critical point. The consequences for future experiments both in and out of equilibrium are discussed.

Steering light with magnetic textures

We study the steering of visible light using a combination of magneto-optical effects and the reconfigurability of magnetic domains in Yttrium-Iron Garnet films. The spontaneously formed stripe domains are used as a field-controlled optical grating, allowing for active spatiotemporal control of light. We discuss the basic ideas behind the approach and provide a quantitative description of the field dependence of the obtained light patterns. Finally, we calculate and experimentally verify the efficiency of our magneto-optical grating.

Multiple energy-scales in vertex-frustrated mesospin systems

The interplay between topology and energy-hierarchy plays a vital role in the collective magnetic order in artificial ferroic systems. Here we investigate, experimentally, the effect of having one or two activation energies of interacting Ising-like magnetic islands -- mesospins -- in thermalized, vertex-frustrated lattices. The thermally arrested magnetic states of the elements were determined using synchrotron-based magnetic microscopy after cooling the samples from temperatures above the Curie temperature of the material. Statistical analysis of the correlations between mesospins across several length-scales, reveals changes in the magnetic order, reflecting the amount of ground state plaquettes realized for a vertex-frustrated lattice. We show that the latter depends on the presence, or not, of different activation energies.

Temperature induced collapse of spin dimensionality in magnetic metamaterials

Spin and spatial dimensionalities are universal concepts, essential for describing both phase transitions and dynamics in magnetic materials. Lately, these ideas have been adopted to describe magnetic properties of metamaterials, as well as to replicate and explore ensembles of mesospins belonging to different universality classes. Here, we take the next step by investigating magnetic metamaterials not conforming to the conventional framework of continuous phase transitions. Instead of a continuous decrease in the moment with temperature, discrete steps are possible, resulting in a binary transition in the interactions of the elements. The transition is enabled by nucleation and annihilation of vortex cores, shifting topological charges between the interior and the edges of the elements. Consequently, the mesospins can be viewed as shifting their spin dimensionality, from 2 (XY-like) to 0, (vortices) at the transition. The results provide insight into how dynamics at different length-scales couple, which can lead to thermally driven topological transitions in magnetic metamaterials.

The effect of confinement on thermally induced fluctuations in nanomagnets

We study the magnetization dynamics in nanomagnets excited by stochastic magnetic fields to mimic temperature in a micromagnetic framework. The effect of confinement arising from the finite size of the structures is investigated, and we visualise the spatial extension of the internal magnon modes. Furthermore, we determine the temperature dependence of the magnon modes, and focus specifically on the low frequency edge modes, which are found to display fluctuations associated with switching between C- and S-states, thus posing an energy barrier. We classify this fluctuating behaviour in three different regimes, and calculate the associated energy barriers using the Arrhenius law.

Collective magnetic dynamics in artificial spin ice probed by AC susceptibility

We report on the study of the thermal dynamics of square artificial spin ice, probed by means of temperature and frequency dependent AC susceptibility. Pronounced influence of the inter-island coupling strength was found on the frequency response of the samples. Through the subsequent analysis of the frequency- and coupling-dependent freezing temperatures, we discuss the phenomenological parameters obtained in the framework of Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law in terms of the samples microscopic features. The high sensitivity and robust signal to noise ratio of AC susceptibility validates the latter as a promising and simple experimental technique for resolving the dynamics and temperature driven dynamics crossovers for the case of artificial spin ice.

The impact of nanoscale compositional variation on the properties of amorphous alloys

The atomic distribution in amorphous FeZr alloys is found to be close to random, nevertheless, the composition can not be viewed as being homogenous at the nm-scale. The spatial variation of the local composition is identified as the root of the unusual magnetic properties in amorphous Fe$_{1-x}$Zr$_{x}$ alloys. The findings are discussed and generalised with respect to the physical properties of amorphous and crystalline materials.

Simultaneous mapping of EMCD signals and crystal orientations in a transmission electron microscope

When magnetic properties are analysed in a TEM using the technique of electron magnetic circular dichroism (EMCD), one of the critical parameters is the sample orientation, and this, independently on the chosen acquisition geometry. Since small orientation changes can have a strong impact on the EMCD measurement, it is experimentally non trivial to measure the EMCD signal as a function of sample orientation. The classical EMCD experimental setup requires to tilt the crystal in a 2 beam orientation and to acquire two electron energy loss spectra at two conjugate scattering angles. The effect of a mistilt from the perfect 2-beam orientation on the measured EMCD signals has not been explored yet due to different experimental constraints. In order to maintain the exact sample location and orientation for the acquisition of the EMCD signal, we have developed a methodology to simultaneously map the quantitative EMCD signals and the local orientation of the crystal. We analyse, both experimentally and with simulations, how the measured magnetic signals evolve with a change in the crystal tilt from the exact 2-beam orientation. Based on this analysis, we establish an accurate relationship between the crystal orientations and the EMCD signals. Our results demonstrate that a small crystal tilt away from the 2-beam orientation can significantly alter the strength and the distribution of the EMCD signals. From an optimisation of the crystal orientation, we obtain quantitative EMCD measurements.

Enabling atomic resolution in convergent beam EMCD measurements by the use of patterned apertures

We give an experimental demonstration of two types of recently proposed ventilator apertures which can be used to acquire electron magnetic circular dichroic (EMCD) signals in zone axis orientation with high spatial resolution. To simplify the experimental procedures, we propose a third type of aperture and experimentally demonstrate the use of this modified ventilator aperture for the case of multiple symmetries in the diffraction patterns. To show the feasibility of the atomic resolution EMCD, EMCD signals are acquired for a range of beam convergence angles. High quality EMCD signals with convergence angles corresponding to atomic resolution electron probes are obtained.
