Non-Gaussian forecasts of weak lensing with and without priors

Assuming a Euclid-like weak lensing data set, we compare different methods of dealing with its inherent parameter degeneracies. Including priors into a data analysis can mask the information content of a given data set alone. However, since the information content of a data set is usually estimated with the Fisher matrix, priors are added in order to enforce an approximately Gaussian likelihood. Here, we compare priorless forecasts to more conventional forecasts that use priors. We find strongly non-Gaussian likelihoods for 2d-weak lensing if no priors are used, which we approximate with the DALI-expansion. Without priors, the Fisher matrix of the 2d-weak lensing likelihood includes unphysical values of $Ω_m$ and $h$, since it does not capture the shape of the likelihood well. The Cramer-Rao inequality then does not need to apply. We find that DALI and Monte Carlo Markov Chains predict the presence of a dark energy with high significance, whereas a Fisher forecast of the same data set also allows decelerated expansion. We also find that a 2d-weak lensing analysis provides a sharp lower limit on the Hubble constant of $h > 0.4$, even if the equation of state of dark energy is jointly constrained by the data. This is not predicted by the Fisher matrix and usually masked in other works by a sharp prior on $h$. Additionally, we find that DALI estimates Figures of Merit in the presence of non-Gaussianities better than the Fisher matrix. We additionally demonstrate how DALI allows switching to a Hamiltonian Monte Carlo sampling of a highly curved likelihood with acceptance rates of $\approx 0.5$, an effective covering of the parameter space, and numerically effectively costless leapfrog steps. This shows how quick forecasts can be upgraded to accurate forecasts whenever needed. Results were gained with the public code from http://lnasellentin.github.io/DALI/

Born-corrections to weak lensing of the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarisation anisotropies

Many weak lensing calculations make use of the Born approximation where the light ray is approximated by a straight path. We examine the effect of Born-corrections for lensing of the cosmic microwave background in an analytical approach by taking perturbative corrections to the geodesic into account. The resulting extra power in the lensing potential spectrum is comparable to the power generated by nonlinear structure formation and affects especially the polarisation spectra, leading to relative changes of the order of one per cent for the $E$-mode spectrum and up to 10 per cent on all scales to the $B$-mode spectrum. In contrast, there is only little change of spectra involving the CMB temperature. Additionally, the corrections excite one more degree of freedom resulting in a deflection component which can not be described as a gradient of the lensing potential as it is related to image rotation in lens-lens coupling. We estimate the magnitude of this effect on the CMB-spectra and find it to be negligible.

Cross bispectra and trispectra of the non-linear integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect and the tracer galaxy density field

In order to investigate possibilities to measure non-Gaussian signatures of the non-linear iSW effect, we study in this work the family of mixed bispectra and trispectra between the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (iSW) temperature perturbation tau and the galaxy over-density gamma. We use standard Eulerian perturbation theory restricted to tree level expansion for predicting the cosmic matter field. As expected, the spectra are found to decrease in amplitude with increasing q. The transition scale between linear domination and the scales, on which non-linearities take over, moves to larger scales with increasing number of included iSW source fields q. We derive the cumulative signal-to-noise ratios for a combination of Planck CMB data and the galaxy sample of a Euclid-like survey. Including scales down to l_max = 1000 we find sobering values of sigma = 0.83 for the mixed bispectrum and sigma = 0.19 in case of the trispectrum for q=1. For higher values of q the polyspectra and are found to be far below the detection limit.

Weak gravitational lensing with DEIMOS

We introduce a novel method for weak-lensing measurements, which is based on a mathematically exact deconvolution of the moments of the apparent brightness distribution of galaxies from the telescope's PSF. No assumptions on the shape of the galaxy or the PSF are made. The (de)convolution equations are exact for unweighted moments only, while in practice a compact weight function needs to be applied to the noisy images to ensure that the moment measurement yields significant results. We employ a Gaussian weight function, whose centroid and ellipticity are iteratively adjusted to match the corresponding quantities of the source. The change of the moments caused by the application of the weight function can then be corrected by considering higher-order weighted moments of the same source. Because of the form of the deconvolution equations, even an incomplete weighting correction leads to an excellent shear estimation if galaxies and PSF are measured with a weight function of identical size. We demonstrate the accuracy and capabilities of this new method in the context of weak gravitational lensing measurements with a set of specialized tests and show its competitive performance on the GREAT08 challenge data. A complete C++ implementation of the method can be requested from the authors.
