Full-Duplex Enabled Mobile Edge Caching: From Distributed to Cooperative Caching

Mobile edge caching (MEC) has received much attention as a promising technique to overcome the stringent latency and data hungry requirements in the future generation wireless networks. Meanwhile, full-duplex (FD) transmission can potentially double the spectral efficiency by allowing a node to receive and transmit in the same time/frequency block simultaneously. In this paper, we investigate the delivery time performance of full-duplex enabled MEC (FD-MEC) systems, in which the users are served by distributed edge nodes (ENs), which operate in FD mode and are equipped with a limited storage memory. Firstly, we analyse the FD-MEC with different levels of cooperation among the ENs and take into account a realistic model of self-interference cancellation. Secondly, we propose a framework to minimize the system delivery time of FD-MEC under both linear and optimal precoding designs}. Thirdly, to deal with the non-convexity of the formulated problems, two iterative optimization algorithms are proposed based on the inner approximation method, whose convergence is analytically guaranteed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed designs are demonstrated via extensive numerical results. {It is shown that the cooperative scheme mitigates inter-user and self interference significantly better than the distributed scheme at an expense of inter-EN cooperation. In addition, we show that minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based precoding design achieves the best performance-complexity trade-off, compared with the zero-forcing and optimal designs.

A Worst-Case Performance Optimization Based Design Approach to Robust Symbol-Level Precoding for Downlink MU-MIMO

This paper addresses the optimization problem of symbol-level precoding (SLP) in the downlink of a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) wireless system while the precoder's output is subject to partially-known distortions. In particular, we assume a linear distortion model with bounded additive noise. The original signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) -constrained SLP problem minimizing the total transmit power is first reformulated as a penalized unconstrained problem, which is referred to as the relaxed robust formulation. We then adopt a worst-case design approach to protect the users' intended symbols and the targeted constructive interference with a desired level of confidence. Due to the non-convexity of the relaxed robust formulation, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the block coordinate ascent-descent method. We show through simulation results that the proposed robust design is flexible in the sense that the CI constraints can be relaxed so as to keep a desirable balance between achievable rate and power consumption. Remarkably, the new formulation yields more energy-efficient solutions for appropriate choices of the penalty parameter, compared to the original problem.

Interference Exploitation via Symbol-Level Precoding: Overview, State-of-the-Art and Future Directions

Interference is traditionally viewed as a performance limiting factor in wireless communication systems, which is to be minimized or mitigated. Nevertheless, a recent line of work has shown that by manipulating the interfering signals such that they add up constructively at the receiver side, known interference can be made beneficial and further improve the system performance in a variety of wireless scenarios, achieved by symbol-level precoding (SLP). This paper aims to provide a tutorial on interference exploitation techniques from the perspective of precoding design in a multi-antenna wireless communication system, by beginning with the classification of constructive interference (CI) and destructive interference (DI). The definition for CI is presented and the corresponding mathematical characterization is formulated for popular modulation types, based on which optimization-based precoding techniques are discussed. In addition, the extension of CI precoding to other application scenarios as well as for hardware efficiency is also described. Proof-of-concept testbeds are demonstrated for the potential practical implementation of CI precoding, and finally a list of open problems and practical challenges are presented to inspire and motivate further research directions in this area.

Bi-objective Framework for Sensor Fusion in RGB-D Multi-View Systems: Applications in Calibration

Complete and textured 3D reconstruction of dynamic scenes has been facilitated by mapped RGB and depth information acquired by RGB-D cameras based multi-view systems. One of the most critical steps in such multi-view systems is to determine the relative poses of all cameras via a process known as extrinsic calibration. In this work, we propose a sensor fusion framework based on a weighted bi-objective optimization for refinement of extrinsic calibration tailored for RGB-D multi-view systems. The weighted bi-objective cost function, which makes use of 2D information from RGB images and 3D information from depth images, is analytically derived via the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method. The weighting factor appears as a function of noise in 2D and 3D measurements and takes into account the affect of residual errors on the optimization. We propose an iterative scheme to estimate noise variances in 2D and 3D measurements, for simultaneously computing the weighting factor together with the camera poses. An extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the proposed approach shows improved calibration performance as compared to refinement schemes which use only 2D or 3D measurement information.

Toward Millimeter Wave Joint Radar-Communications: A Signal Processing Perspective

Synergistic design of communications and radar systems with common spectral and hardware resources is heralding a new era of efficiently utilizing a limited radio-frequency spectrum. Such a joint radar-communications (JRC) model has advantages of low-cost, compact size, less power consumption, spectrum sharing, improved performance, and safety due to enhanced information sharing. Today, millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communications have emerged as the preferred technology for short distance wireless links because they provide transmission bandwidth that is several gigahertz wide. This band is also promising for short-range radar applications, which benefit from the high-range resolution arising from large transmit signal bandwidths. Signal processing techniques are critical in implementation of mmWave JRC systems. Major challenges are joint waveform design and performance criteria that would optimally trade-off between communications and radar functionalities. Novel multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing techniques are required because mmWave JRC systems employ large antenna arrays. There are opportunities to exploit recent advances in cognition, compressed sensing, and machine learning to reduce required resources and dynamically allocate them with low overheads. This article provides a signal processing perspective of mmWave JRC systems with an emphasis on waveform design.

Localized Trajectories for 2D and 3D Action Recognition

The Dense Trajectories concept is one of the most successful approaches in action recognition, suitable for scenarios involving a significant amount of motion. However, due to noise and background motion, many generated trajectories are irrelevant to the actual human activity and can potentially lead to performance degradation. In this paper, we propose Localized Trajectories as an improved version of Dense Trajectories where motion trajectories are clustered around human body joints provided by RGB-D cameras and then encoded by local Bag-of-Words. As a result, the Localized Trajectories concept provides a more discriminative representation of actions as compared to Dense Trajectories. Moreover, we generalize Localized Trajectories to 3D by using the modalities offered by RGB-D cameras. One of the main advantages of using RGB-D data to generate trajectories is that they include radial displacements that are perpendicular to the image plane. Extensive experiments and analysis are carried out on five different datasets.

A Joint Solution for Scheduling and Precoding in Multiuser MISO Downlink Channels

The long-term average performance of the MISO downlink channel, with a large number of users compared to transmit antennas of the BS, depends on the interference management which necessitates the joint design problem of scheduling and precoding. Unlike the previous works which do not offer a truly joint design, this paper focuses on formulating a problem amenable for the joint update of scheduling and precoding. Novel optimization formulations are investigated to reveal the hidden difference of convex/ concave structure for three classical criteria (weighted sum rate, max-min SINR, and power minimization) and associated constraints are considered. Thereafter, we propose a convex-concave procedure framework based iterative algorithm where scheduling and precoding variables are updated jointly in each iteration. Finally, we show the superiority in performance of joint solution over the state-of-the-art designs through Monte-Carlo simulations.

$M$-QAM Precoder Design for MIMO Directional Modulation Transceivers

Spectrally efficient multi-antenna wireless communication systems are a key challenge as service demands continue to increase. At the same time, powering up radio access networks is facing environmental and regulation limitations. In order to achieve more power efficiency, we design a directional modulation precoder by considering an $M$-QAM constellation, particularly with $M=4,8,16,32$. First, extended detection regions are defined for desired constellations using analytical geometry. Then, constellation points are placed in the optimal positions of these regions while the minimum Euclidean distance to adjacent constellation points and detection region boundaries is kept as in the conventional $M$-QAM modulation. For further power efficiency and symbol error rate similar to that of fixed design in high SNR, relaxed detection regions are modeled for inner points of $M=16,32$ constellations. The modeled extended and relaxed detection regions as well as the modulation characteristics are utilized to formulate symbol-level precoder design problems for directional modulation to minimize the transmission power while preserving the minimum required SNR at the destination. In addition, the extended and relaxed detection regions are used for precoder design to minimize the output of each power amplifier. We transform the design problems into convex ones and devise an interior point path-following iterative algorithm to solve the mentioned problems and provide details on finding the initial values of the parameters and the starting point. Results show that compared to the benchmark schemes, the proposed method performs better in terms of power and peak power reduction as well as symbol error rate reduction for a wide range of SNRs.

Energy-Efficient Multi-Cell Multigroup Multicasting with Joint Beamforming and Antenna Selection

This paper studies the energy efficiency and sum rate trade-off for coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output systems. We first consider a conventional network energy efficiency maximization (EEmax) problem by jointly optimizing the transmit beamformers and antennas selected to be used in transmission. We also account for per-antenna maximum power constraints to avoid non-linear distortion in power amplifiers and user-specific minimum rate constraints to guarantee certain service levels and fairness. To be energy-efficient, transmit antenna selection is employed. It eventually leads to a mixed-Boolean fractional program. We then propose two different approaches to solve this difficult problem. The first solution is based on a novel modeling technique that produces a tight continuous relaxation. The second approach is based on sparsity-inducing method, which does not require the introduction of any Boolean variable. We also investigate the trade-off between the energy efficiency and sum rate by proposing two different formulations. In the first formulation, we propose a new metric that is the ratio of the sum rate and the so-called weighted power. Specifically, this metric reduces to EEmax when the weight is 1, and to sum rate maximization when the weight is 0. In the other method, we treat the trade-off problem as a multi-objective optimization for which a scalarization approach is adopted. Numerical results illustrate significant achievable energy efficiency gains over the method where the antenna selection is not employed. The effect of antenna selection on the energy efficiency and sum rate trade-off is also demonstrated.

Successive Convex Approximation Algorithms for Sparse Signal Estimation with Nonconvex Regularizations

In this paper, we propose a successive convex approximation framework for sparse optimization where the nonsmooth regularization function in the objective function is nonconvex and it can be written as the difference of two convex functions. The proposed framework is based on a nontrivial combination of the majorization-minimization framework and the successive convex approximation framework proposed in literature for a convex regularization function. The proposed framework has several attractive features, namely, i) flexibility, as different choices of the approximate function lead to different type of algorithms; ii) fast convergence, as the problem structure can be better exploited by a proper choice of the approximate function and the stepsize is calculated by the line search; iii) low complexity, as the approximate function is convex and the line search scheme is carried out over a differentiable function; iv) guaranteed convergence to a stationary point. We demonstrate these features by two example applications in subspace learning, namely, the network anomaly detection problem and the sparse subspace clustering problem. Customizing the proposed framework by adopting the best-response type approximation, we obtain soft-thresholding with exact line search algorithms for which all elements of the unknown parameter are updated in parallel according to closed-form expressions. The attractive features of the proposed algorithms are illustrated numerically.

Energy efficiency optimization in MIMO interference channels: A successive pseudoconvex approximation approach

In this paper, we consider the (global and sum) energy efficiency optimization problem in downlink multi-input multi-output multi-cell systems, where all users suffer from multi-user interference. This is a challenging problem due to several reasons: 1) it is a nonconvex fractional programming problem, 2) the transmission rate functions are characterized by (complex-valued) transmit covariance matrices, and 3) the processing-related power consumption may depend on the transmission rate. We tackle this problem by the successive pseudoconvex approximation approach, and we argue that pseudoconvex optimization plays a fundamental role in designing novel iterative algorithms, not only because every locally optimal point of a pseudoconvex optimization problem is also globally optimal, but also because a descent direction is easily obtained from every optimal point of a pseudoconvex optimization problem. The proposed algorithms have the following advantages: 1) fast convergence as the structure of the original optimization problem is preserved as much as possible in the approximate problem solved in each iteration, 2) easy implementation as each approximate problem is suitable for parallel computation and its solution has a closed-form expression, and 3) guaranteed convergence to a stationary point or a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point. The advantages of the proposed algorithm are also illustrated numerically.

A Framework for Optimizing Multi-cell NOMA: Delivering Demand with Less Resource

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) allows multiple users to simultaneously access the same time-frequency resource by using superposition coding and successive interference cancellation (SIC). Thus far, most papers on NOMA have focused on performance gain for one or sometimes two base stations. In this paper, we study multi-cell NOMA and provide a general framework for user clustering and power allocation, taking into account inter-cell interference, for optimizing resource allocation of NOMA in multi-cell networks of arbitrary topology. We provide a series of theoretical analysis, to algorithmically enable optimization approaches. The resulting algorithmic notion is very general. Namely, we prove that for any performance metric that monotonically increases in the cells' resource consumption, we have convergence guarantee for global optimum. We apply the framework with its algorithmic concept to a multi-cell scenario to demonstrate the gain of NOMA in achieving significantly higher efficiency.

Constrained Bayesian Active Learning of Interference Channels in Cognitive Radio Networks

In this paper, a sequential probing method for interference constraint learning is proposed to allow a centralized Cognitive Radio Network (CRN) accessing the frequency band of a Primary User (PU) in an underlay cognitive scenario with a designed PU protection specification. The main idea is that the CRN probes the PU and subsequently eavesdrops the reverse PU link to acquire the binary ACK/NACK packet. This feedback indicates whether the probing-induced interference is harmful or not and can be used to learn the PU interference constraint. The cognitive part of this sequential probing process is the selection of the power levels of the Secondary Users (SUs) which aims to learn the PU interference constraint with a minimum number of probing attempts while setting a limit on the number of harmful probing-induced interference events or equivalently of NACK packet observations over a time window. This constrained design problem is studied within the Active Learning (AL) framework and an optimal solution is derived and implemented with a sophisticated, accurate and fast Bayesian Learning method, the Expectation Propagation (EP). The performance of this solution is also demonstrated through numerical simulations and compared with modified versions of AL techniques we developed in earlier work.

Distributed Optimization for Coordinated Beamforming in Multi-Cell Multigroup Multicast Systems: Power Minimization and SINR Balancing

This paper considers coordinated multicast beamforming in a multi-cell multigroup multiple-input single-output system. Each base station (BS) serves multiple groups of users by forming a single beam with common information per group. We propose centralized and distributed beamforming algorithms for two different optimization targets. The first objective is to minimize the total transmission power of all the BSs while guaranteeing the user-specific minimum quality-of-service targets. The semidefinite relaxation (SDR) method is used to approximate the non-convex multicast problem as a semidefinite program (SDP), which is solvable via centralized processing. Subsequently, two alternative distributed methods are proposed. The first approach turns the SDP into a two-level optimization via primal decomposition. At the higher level, inter-cell interference powers are optimized for fixed beamformers while the lower level locally optimizes the beamformers by minimizing BS-specific transmit powers for the given inter-cell interference constraints. The second distributed solution is enabled via an alternating direction method of multipliers, where the inter-cell interference optimization is divided into a local and a global optimization by forcing the equality via consistency constraints. We further propose a centralized and a simple distributed beamforming design for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem in which the minimum SINR among the users is maximized with given per-BS power constraints. This problem is solved via the bisection method as a series of SDP feasibility problems. The simulation results show the superiority of the proposed coordinated beamforming algorithms over traditional non-coordinated transmission schemes, and illustrate the fast convergence of the distributed methods.

Energy-Efficient Joint Unicast and Multicast Beamforming with Multi-Antenna User Terminals

This paper studies energy-efficient joint transmit and receive beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multiple-input multiple-output systems. We consider conventional network energy efficiency metric where the users can receive unicasting streams in addition to the group-specific common multicasting streams which have certain rate constraints. The goal is to use the transmission resources more efficiently to improve the energy efficiency, when the users are equipped with multiple antennas. Numerical results show the achieved energy efficiency gains by using the additional degrees of freedom of the multicasting transmission to private message unicasting.

Symbol-level and Multicast Precoding for Multiuser Multiantenna Downlink: A Survey, Classification and Challenges

Precoding has been conventionally considered as an effective means of mitigating the interference and efficiently exploiting the available in the multiantenna downlink channel, where multiple users are simultaneously served with independent information over the same channel resources. The early works in this area were focused on transmitting an individual information stream to each user by constructing weighted linear combinations of symbol blocks (codewords). However, more recent works have moved beyond this traditional view by: i) transmitting distinct data streams to groups of users and ii) applying precoding on a symbol-per-symbol basis. In this context, the current survey presents a unified view and classification of precoding techniques with respect to two main axes: i) the switching rate of the precoding weights, leading to the classes of block- and symbol-level precoding, ii) the number of users that each stream is addressed to, hence unicast-/multicast-/broadcast- precoding. Furthermore, the classified techniques are compared through representative numerical results to demonstrate their relative performance and uncover fundamental insights. Finally, a list of open theoretical problems and practical challenges are presented to inspire further research in this area.

Energy-Efficient Coordinated Multi-Cell Multigroup Multicast Beamforming with Antenna Selection

This paper studies energy-efficient coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multigroup multicast multiple-input single-output systems. We aim at maximizing the network energy efficiency by taking into account the fact that some of the radio frequency chains can be switched off in order to save power. We consider the antenna specific maximum power constraints to avoid non-linear distortion in power amplifiers and user-specific quality of service (QoS) constraints to guarantee a certain QoS levels. We first introduce binary antenna selection variables and use the perspective formulation to model the relation between them and the beamformers. Subsequently, we propose a new formulation which reduces the feasible set of the continuous relaxation, resulting in better performance compared to the original perspective formulation based problem. However, the resulting optimization problem is a mixed-Boolean non-convex fractional program, which is difficult to solve. We follow the standard continuous relaxation of the binary antenna selection variables, and then reformulate the problem such that it is amendable to successive convex approximation. Thereby, solving the continuous relaxation mostly results in near-binary solution. To recover the binary variables from the continuous relaxation, we switch off all the antennas for which the continuous values are smaller than a small threshold. Numerical results illustrate the superior convergence result and significant achievable gains in terms of energy efficiency with the proposed algorithm.

On the Performance Analysis of Underlay Cognitive Radio Systems: A Deployment Perspective

We study the performance of cognitive Underlay System (US) that employ power control mechanism at the Secondary Transmitter (ST) from a deployment perspective. Existing baseline models considered for performance analysis either assume the knowledge of involved channels at the ST or retrieve this information by means of a band manager or a feedback channel, however, such situations rarely exist in practice. Motivated by this fact, we propose a novel approach that incorporates estimation of the involved channels at the ST, in order to characterize the performance of the US in terms of interference power received at the primary receiver and throughput at the secondary receiver (or \textit{secondary throughput}). Moreover, we apply an outage constraint that captures the impact of imperfect channel knowledge, particularly on the uncertain interference. Besides this, we employ a transmit power constraint at the ST to classify the operation of the US in terms of an interference-limited regime and a power-limited regime. In addition, we characterize the expressions of the uncertain interference and the secondary throughput for the case where the involved channels encounter Nakagami-$m$ fading. Finally, we investigate a fundamental tradeoff between the estimation time and the secondary throughput depicting an optimized performance of the US.
