High-Pressure Refractive Indices of NaCl, KCl, CaO, SrO, and MgO Reveal the Dependence of Anion Polarizability on Coordination Number and Bond Length

Several alkali chlorides and alkaline-earth oxides adopt the B1 structure at ambient conditions and transform to B2 under compression, allowing to change coordination number and cation-anion distance independently across chemically distinct hosts. The change in anion polarizability under high pressure dominates the optical response of these prototypical ionic solids, yet its dependence on local structure and cation chemistry remains experimentally unconstrained at high pressure. Here we report refractive indices of NaCl, KCl, CaO, and SrO to ~100, ~100, ~120, and ~60 GPa, each in both the B1 and B2 structures, complemented by published MgO-B1 indices to 140 GPa and DFT calculations. Lorentz-Lorenz analysis yields pressure-independent strain polarizability parameters $Λ$ ranging from 0.34$\pm$0.05 for KCl-B1 to 1.57$\pm$0.02 for MgO-B2. Our results establish coordination number and cation-anion distance as separable predictors of anion polarizability in both B1 and B2 structures. Increasing anion coordination from six to eight at fixed cation-anion distance lowers the polarizability of both $Cl^{-}$ and $O^{2-}$ by ~0.34-0.40 $\mathring{A}^3$ and ~0.38-0.47 $\mathring{A}^3$ respectively. Our results suggest that the polarizability of $O^{2-}$ is transferable to within ~0.06 $\mathring{A}^3$ between MgO-B1 and CaO-B1 at fixed cation-anion distance, and that this transferability possibly extends to SrO-B1 and the B2 oxides. In contrast, the polarizability of $Cl^{-}$ is not transferable between NaCl-B2 and KCl-B2: the difference between them varies with cation-anion distance, from ~0.2 $\mathring{A}^3$ at 2.65 $\mathring{A}$ to 0 at ~2.5 $\mathring{A}$. The results show that the change of the strain polarizability parameters across the B1-B2 transition is governed by the decreasing and increasing sensitivities of $O^{2-}$ and $Cl^{-}$ polarizabilities to densification, respectively.

Lattice dynamics and elastic properties of black phosphorus

We experimentally determine the lattice dynamics of black phosphorus layered crystals through a combination of x-ray diffuse scattering and inelastic x-ray scattering, and we rationalize our experimental findings using $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations. From the phonon dispersions at terahertz frequencies, we derive the full single-crystal elastic tensor and relate it to the macroscopic elastic response of black phosphorus, described by the elastic moduli. The elastic stiffness coefficients obtained here provide an important benchmark for models of black phosphorus and related materials, such as phosphorene and black phosphorus nanotubes, recently emerged quantum materials, disclosing a huge potential for nanophotonics, optoelectronics, and quantum sensing.

Framework Flexibility and the Negative Thermal Expansion Mechanism of Copper(I) Oxide, Cu2O

The negative thermal expansion (NTE) mechanism in Cu2O has been characterised via mapping of different Cu2O structural flexibility models onto phonons obtained using ab-initio lattice dynamics. Low frequency acoustic modes that are responsible for the NTE in this material correspond to vibrations of rigid O-Cu-O rods. There is also some small contribution from higher frequency optic modes that correspond to rotations of rigid and near-rigid OCu4 tetrahedra as well as of near-rigid O-Cu-O rods. The primary NTE mode also drives a ferroelastic phase transition at high pressure; our calculations predict this to be to an orthorhombic structure with space group Pnnn.

Lattice dynamics of coesite

The lattice dynamics of coesite has been studied by a combination of diffuse x-ray scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering and an ab initio lattice dynamics calculation. The combined technique gives access to the full lattice dynamics in harmonic description and thus eventually provides detailed information on the elastic properties, the stability and metastability of crystalline systems. The experimentally validated calculation was used for the investigation of eigenvectors, mode character and their influence on the density of vibrational states. High symmetry sections of the reciprocal space distribution of diffuse scattering and inelastic x-ray scattering spectra as well as the density of vibrational states and the dispersion relation are reported and compared to the calculation. A critical point at the zone boundary is found to contribute strongly to the main peak of the low energy part in the density of vibrational states. Comparison with the most abundant SiO2 polymorph - alpha-quartz - reveals similarities and distinct differences in the low-energy vibrational properties.
