Spectra of laser diodes

This paper provides an introduction to the theory of semiconductor laser diodes, with special focus on their noise properties. It may be considered an additional chapter to the textbook [1]. As such, it will also refer to equations in that book.

Opto-Electronic Clock Regeneration -- A Tutorial

A tutorial on opto-electronic clock regeneration at very high bit rates beyond reach with purely electronic solutions is given. Emphasis is placed on sum frequency generation in a nonlinear material such as LiNbO3. We first provide a basic introduction to CR (clock recovery) and a PLL (phase-locked loop); two examples are considered, an input signal frequency step and a slow input signal frequency. Next we discuss opto-electronic clock recovery based on an OPLL (opto-electronic PLL). The OPLL contains a phase comparator consisting of a planar LiNbO3 waveguide, a lowpass filter, a VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) and a local oscillator laser. The error signal from the comparator determined by the difference in electrical phase between the signal and the VCO controls the VCO. The VCO has two outputs; one that modulates the local oscillator laser and another that triggers a decision circuit that samples the output from the OPLL. The VCO is continuously adjusted by the OPLL so that it will ensure sampling of the signal in the optimal moments.

Dynamical properties of nanolasers based on few discrete emitters

We investigate the dynamical properties of nanolasers comprising a few two-level emitters coupled to an optical cavity. A set of rate equations is derived, which agree very well with a solution of the full master equation model and makes it simple to investigate the properties of the system. Using a linearized version of these rate equations, we can analytically express the response of the nanolaser to a modulation of the pumping rate. These results are compared to the modulation response obtained directly from the master equation using a novel method. Using the rate equation method, we calculate the modulation bandwidth and show that, contrary to conventional semiconductor lasers, the nanolaser is typically over-damped and displays a dip in the modulation bandwidth as the two-level systems become inverted. Both these features can be traced back to the modeling of the emitters as two-level systems that are incoherently pumped.

Fractional decay of quantum dots in real photonic crystals

We show that fractional decay may be observable in experiments using quantum dots and photonic crystals with parameters that are currently achievable. We focus on the case of inverse opal photonic crystals and locate the position in the crystal where the effect is most pronounced. Furthermore, we quantify the influence of absorptive loss and show that it is a limiting but not prohibitive effect.

Vectorial modeling of near-field imaging with uncoated fiber probes: Transfer function and resolving power

Using exact three-dimensional vectorial simulations of radiation coupling into uncoated dielectric fiber probes, we calculate amplitude transfer functions for conical single-mode fiber tips at the light wavelength of 633 nm. The coupling efficiency of glass fiber tips is determined in a wide range of spatial frequencies of the incident radiation for opening angles varying from 30 to 120 degrees. The resolution in near-field imaging with these tips is considered for field distributions limited in both direct and spatial-frequency space. The characteristics of the transfer functions describing the relation between probed optical fields and near-field images are analyzed in detail. The importance of utilizing a perfectly sharp tip is also examined.
