Angular Analysis of New Physics Operators in polarized $τ\to 3 \ell$ Decays

In a bottom-up approach we investigate lepton-flavour violating processes $τ\to 3 \ell$ that are mediated by New Physics encoded in effective-theory operators of dimension six. While the opportunity to scrutinize the underlying operator structure has been investigated before, we explore the benefits of utilising the polarization direction of the initial $τ$ lepton and the angular distribution of the decay. Given the rarity of these events (if observed at all), we focus on integrated observables rather than spectra, such as partial rates and asymmetries. In an effort to estimate the number of events required to extract the coupling coefficients to the effective operators we perform a phenomenological study with virtual experiments.

The B-meson Light-Cone Distribution Amplitude in Dual Space

We describe a representation of the leading B-meson light-cone distribution amplitude in heavy-quark effective theory based on the eigenfunctions of its anomalous dimension kernel. In this representation (called the dual LCDA) different dual momenta no longer mix under renormalization. We discuss the perturbative and non-perturbative nature of different regions in this space.

B-Meson Light-Cone Distribution Amplitude: Perturbative Constraints and Asymptotic Behaviour in Dual Space

Based on the dual representation in terms of the recently established eigenfunctions of the evolution kernel in heavy-quark effective theory, we investigate the description of the B-meson light-cone distribution amplitude (LCDA) beyond tree-level. In particular, in dual space, small and large momenta do not mix under renormalization, and therefore perturbative constraints from a short-distance expansion in the parton picture can be implemented independently from non-perturbative modelling of long-distance effects. It also allows to (locally) resum perturbative logarithms from large dual momenta at fixed values of the renormalization scale. We construct a generic procedure to combine perturbative and non-perturbative information on the B-meson LCDA and compare different model functions and the resulting logarithmic moments which are the relevant hadronic parameters in QCD factorization theorems for exclusive B-meson decays.

On Glauber modes in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

Gluon interactions involving spectator partons in collisions at hadronic machines are investigated. We find a class of examples in which a mode, called Glauber gluons, must be introduced to the effective theory for consistency.

Scale setting and resummation of logarithms in pp -> V + jets

The production of vector bosons in association with jets contains at least two unrelated scales. The first is the mass of the vector boson m_V and the second is the hard interaction scale giving rise to large transverse momenta of the produced jets. The production cross sections depend logarithmically on the ratio of these scales, which can lead to a poor convergence in fixed order perturbation theory. We illustrate how to resum all leading logarithmic terms using effective theory methods, and show that they can be resummed by a simple choice of the factorization scale. Implementing this scale choice we show that the large discrepancies between next-to-leading calculations and leading order calculations using more traditional choices of scales disappear.

Inclusive semileptonic decays of the B meson

This talk is a short review on the theoretical issues and uncertainties in the calculation of partial decay rates in inclusive B decays. The main emphasis is on charmless semileptonic decays, the B -> X(s) gamma photon spectrum, and the extraction of Vub using model-independent methods.

A two-loop relation between inclusive radiative and semileptonic B-decay spectra

A shape-function independent relation is derived between the partial B->X_u+l+nu decay rate with a cut on P_+=E_X-P_X X_s+gamma photon-energy spectrum. The leading-power contribution to the weight function is calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory, including exact two-loop matching corrections at the scale mu_i^2 ~ m_b*Lambda_{QCD}. The overall normalization of the weight function is obtained up to yet unknown corrections of order [alpha_s(m_b)]^2. Power corrections from phase-space factors are included exactly, while the remaining subleading contributions are included at first order in 1/m_b. At this level unavoidable hadronic uncertainties enter, which are estimated in a conservative way. The combined theoretical accuracy in the extraction of |V_{ub}| is at the level of 5% if a value of Delta near the charm threshold can be achieved experimentally.

Theory of Charmless Inclusive B Decays and the Extraction of V_{ub}

We present ``state-of-the-art'' theoretical expressions for the triple differential B->X_u l^- nu decay rate and for the B->X_s gamma photon spectrum, which incorporate all known contributions and smoothly interpolate between the ``shape-function region'' of large hadronic energy and small invariant mass, and the ``OPE region'' in which all hadronic kinematical variables scale with M_B. The differential rates are given in a form which has no explicit reference to the mass of the b quark, avoiding the associated uncertainties. Dependence on m_b enters indirectly through the properties of the leading shape function, which can be determined by fitting the B->X_s gamma photon spectrum. This eliminates the dominant theoretical uncertainties from predictions for B->X_u l^- nu decay distributions, allowing for a precise determination of |V_{ub}|. In the shape-function region, short-distance and long-distance contributions are factorized at next-to-leading order in renormalization-group improved perturbation theory. Higher-order power corrections include effects from subleading shape functions where they are known. When integrated over sufficiently large portions in phase space, our results reduce to standard OPE expressions up to yet unknown O(alpha_s^2) terms. Predictions are presented for partial B->X_u l^- nu decay rates with various experimental cuts. An elaborate error analysis is performed that contains all significant theoretical uncertainties, including weak annihilation effects. We suggest that the latter can be eliminated by imposing a cut on high lepton invariant mass.

Factorization and the Soft Overlap Contribution to Heavy-to-Light Form Factors

Using the formalism of soft-collinear effective theory, a complete separation of short- and long-distance contributions to heavy-to-light transition form factors at large recoil is performed. The universal functions $ζ_M(E)$ parameterizing the ``soft overlap'' contribution to the form factors are defined in terms of matrix elements in the effective theory. Endpoint configurations corresponding to kinematic situations where one of the valence partons in the external mesons carries very small momentum are accounted for in terms of operators involving soft-collinear messenger fields. They contribute at leading order in $Λ_{\rm QCD}/E$ and spoil factorization. An analysis of operator mixing and renormalization-group evolution in the effective theory reveals that the intermediate scale $\sqrt{EΛ}$ is without significance to the soft functions $ζ_M(E)$, and that the soft overlap contribution does not receive a significant perturbative (Sudakov) suppression.

QCD-Factorization of inclusive B decays and |Vub|

Recent progress in the theoretical description of inclusive B to X_u l nu decays in the shape-function region is reported. Finite moments of the shape function are related to HQET parameters. Event fractions for several experimental cuts are presented, with a particular emphasis on the hadronic variable P+. The aim of this talk is to introduce the P+ spectrum, to compare it to the hadronic invariant mass spectrum and the charged-lepton energy spectrum, and to study the prospect of evaluating |Vub| in the presence of a large background from B to X_c decays.

Proposal for a Precision Measurement of |Vub|

A new method for a precision measurement of the CKM matrix element |Vub| is discussed, which combines good theoretical control with high efficiency and a powerful discrimination against charm background. The resulting combined theoretical uncertainty on |Vub| is estimated to be 10%.

The renormalized B-meson light-cone distribution amplitude

I discuss the renormalization-group equation governing the leading order light-cone distribution amplitude of the B-meson phi^B_+(omega,mu) and its exact analytic solution. The solution displays two features concerning the asymptotic behaviour of phi^B_+(omega,mu) for small and large values of omega. I comment on further applications and argue that the loss of normalizability is not a problem in practice.

Non-Valence Fock States in Heavy-to-Light Form Factors at Large Recoil

We studied three-particle Fock state contributions to heavy-to-light form factors in the context of soft-collinear effective theory and found that they enter at leading power. These contributions are non-factorizable due to the appearance of endpoint singularities, however they do not violate spin-symmetry relations at leading power. In this talk I present their numerical estimation in a crude model in which the "soft overlap" contribution is cut off and find that they might lower the standard values for the form factors at maximum recoil significantly. Furthermore I briefly discuss the role of soft-collinear messenger modes in the region of soft overlap.

Renormalization-Group Evolution of the B-Meson Light-Cone Distribution Amplitude

An integro-differential equation governing the evolution of the leading-order B-meson light-cone distribution amplitude is derived. The anomalous dimension in this equation contains a logarithm of the renormalization scale, whose coefficient is identified with the cusp anomalous dimension of Wilson loops. The exact analytic solution of the evolution equation is obtained, from which the asymptotic behavior of the distribution amplitude is derived. These results can be used to resum Sudakov logarithms entering the hard-scattering kernels in QCD factorization theorems for exclusive B decays.

f_B and f_B_s from QCD sum rules

The decay constants of the pseudoscalar mesons B and B_s are evaluated from QCD sum rules for the pseudoscalar two-point function. Recently calculated perturbative three-loop QCD corrections are incorporated into the sum rule. An analysis in terms of the bottom quark pole mass turns out to be unreliable due to large higher order radiative corrections. On the contrary, in the MS_bar scheme the higher order corrections are under good theoretical control and a reliable determination of f_B and f_{B_s} becomes feasible. Including variations of all input parameters within reasonable ranges, our final results for the pseudoscalar meson decay constants are f_B = 210 +- 19 MeV and f_B_s = 244 +- 21 MeV. Employing additional information on the product sqrt(B_B) f_B from global fits to the unitarity triangle, we are in a position to also extract the B-meson B-parameter B_B = 1.26 +- 0.45. Our results are well compatible with analogous determinations of the above quantities in lattice QCD.
