Synthesis and stability of high-$T_c$ LaH$_{10\pm\delta}$ films at high pressures

High-pressure hydrides hold the record for the highest superconducting critical temperatures across all classes of superconductors. Currently lanthanum decahydride, LaH$_{10}$, exhibits the highest critical temperature among binaries, with $T_c \approx$ 250 K at pressures between 140-180 GPa. Here, we report the synthesis of LaH$_{10\pm\delta}$ films in two DACs at pressures of 168 GPa and 176 GPa via in situ laser heating of elemental lanthanum films with ammonia borane (NH$_3$BH$_3$) as the hydrogen donor. The high-symmetry fcc lanthanum sublattice (space group $Fm\bar3m$) is resolved using synchrotron X-ray diffraction, with unit cell parameters in excellent agreement with previous studies on bulk samples. We provide confirmation of high-$T_c$ superconductivity in LaH$_{10\pm\delta}$ with highest $T_c$ of 247 K at 176 GPa evidenced in electrical measurements. The characteristic suppression of superconductivity is observed in magnetic fields. Furthermore, combined diffraction and electrical measurements reveal remarkable temporal stability of both the crystal structure and the high-$T_c$ superconductivity over the full measurement period of about 300 days post laser heating. Our work establishes film precursors using physical vapour deposition (PVD) techniques as a practical route to hydride formation, opening a pathway toward the controlled synthesis of promising ternary hydrides and the integration of micro-fabricated device geometries in diamond anvil cells.

Intertwined Orders in a Quantum-Entangled Metal

Entanglement underpins quantum information processing and computing, yet its experimental quantification in complex, many-body condensed matter systems remains a considerable challenge. Here, we reveal a highly entangled electronic phase proximate to a quantum metal-insulator transition, identified by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering interferometry. This approach reveals that entanglement across atomic sites generates characteristic interference patterns, which our model accurately reproduces, enabling extraction of a full entanglement spectrum and resolution of the underlying quantum states. Our analysis of the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7 demonstrates that the system undergoes pronounced quantum fluctuations in its spin, orbital and charge degrees of freedom, even in the presence of a long-range 'all-in-all-out' antiferromagnetic order. Importantly, the observed entanglement signatures facilitate the coexistence of multiple exotic symmetry-breaking orders. Complementary investigations using Raman spectroscopy corroborate the presence of these hidden orders and their emergent excitations. In particular, we observe a two-magnon-bound state below the lowest single-magnon excitation energy, which, together with split phonon modes, provides strong evidence for cubic symmetry-breaking orders of magnetic origin juxtaposed with the all-in-all-out order. Our work thus establishes a direct link between quantum entanglement and emergent unconventional orders, opening new avenues for investigating quantum materials.

Observation of Rashba Magnetism in Ultrathin Ferromagnet-Heavy Metal Bilayers

Both magnetism and spin-orbit coupling in systems with broken inversion symmetry lift the spin degeneracy of electronic bands, but the consequences of interplay between these mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we show that ultrathin transition ferromagnet-heavy metal bilayers exhibit anomalous temperature- and electric bias-dependent behaviors in the vicinity of the Curie temperature, inconsistent with the usual Weiss magnetism. Characterization by several complementary techniques and analysis of the dependence on composition reveal that these effects originate from interfacial spin-orbit interaction, which results in the emergence of a state with distinct magnetic and magnetoelectronic properties that can be described as Rashba magnetism. Our findings open a new route for the characterization and control of spin-orbit phenomena in heterostructures enabling the development of efficient spin-orbitronic devices.

Rayleigh anomalies and disorder-induced mixing of polarizations at nanoscale in amorphous solids. Testing 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride glass

Acoustic excitations in topologically disordered media at mesoscale present anomalous features with respect to the Debye's theory. In a three-dimensional medium an acoustic excitation is characterized by its phase velocity, intensity and polarization. The so-called Rayleigh anomalies, which manifest in attenuation and retardation of the acoustic excitations, affect the first two properties. The topological disorder is, however, expected to influence also the third one. Acoustic excitations with a well-defined polarization in the continuum limit present indeed a so-called mixing of polarizations at nanoscale, as attested by experimental observations and Molecular Dynamics simulations. We provide a comprehensive experimental characterization of acoustic dynamics properties of a selected glass, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride glass, whose heterogeneous structure at nanoscale is well-assessed. Distinctive features, which can be related to the occurrence of the Rayleigh anomalies and of the mixing of polarizations are observed. We develop, in the framework of the Random Media Theory, an analytical model that allows a quantitative description of all the Rayleigh anomalies and the mixing of polarizations. Contrast between theoretical and experimental features for the selected glass reveals an excellent agreement. The quantitative theoretical approach permits thus to demonstrate how the mixing of polarizations generates distinctive feature in the dynamic structure factor of glasses and to unambiguously identify them. The robustness of the proposed theoretical approach is validated by its ability to describe as well transverse acoustic dynamics.
