BLOKS: Scaling Kernel Solvers with Sketched Block Preconditioning

Kernel Ridge Regression (KRR) is a theoretically sound algorithm for nonparametric learning, which is also often used to investigate properties of deep learning. However, the exact KRR formulation incurs time and memory costs preventing applicability to large datasets, motivating the development of approximate solvers. These algorithms rely on (i) iterative methods, to avoid the computational burden of direct solutions; (ii) sketching or batching, to reduce the problem size; and (iii) preconditioning, to accelerate convergence. While crucial for fast convergence, preconditioning incurs memory costs that can be managed by lowering the number of free parameters of the model, potentially at the expense of expressivity and hence accuracy. To address this challenge, we propose BLOKS, a Conjugate Gradient-based solver for Nyström-sketched KRR built around a novel preconditioner that combines a block Jacobi approximation with sketching. The BLOKS preconditioner has memory cost independent of both the dataset size and the number of parameters, allowing scaling to large models. We provide a memory-efficient, GPU-accelerated implementation and show that BLOKS achieves excellent accuracy while retaining favorable time/memory complexity. Indeed, on standard large-scale datasets used to benchmark kernel solvers, BLOKS achieves comparable or better performances than state-of-the-art methods.

On the continuum limit of epidemiological models on graphs: convergence and approximation results

We focus on an epidemiological model (the archetypical SIR system) defined on graphs and study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions as the number of vertices in the graph diverges. By relying on the theory of so called graphons we provide a characterization of the limit and establish convergence results. We also provide approximation results for both deterministic and random discretizations.

Pointwise A Posteriori Error Analysis of a Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Elliptic Obstacle Problem

We present a posteriori error analysis in the supremum norm for the symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method for the elliptic obstacle problem. We construct discrete barrier functions based on appropriate corrections of the conforming part of the solution that is obtained via a constrained averaging operator. The corrector function accounts properly for the non-conformity of the approximation and it is estimated by direct use of the Green's function of the unconstrained elliptic problem. The use of the continuous maximum principle guarantees the validity of the analysis without mesh restrictions but shape regularity. The proposed residual type estimators are shown to be reliable and efficient. Numerical results in two dimensions are included to verify the theory and validate the performance of the error estimator.

A Combined Preconditioning Strategy for Nonsymmetric Systems

We present and analyze a class of nonsymmetric preconditioners within a normal (weighted least-squares) matrix form for use in GMRES to solve nonsymmetric matrix problems that typically arise in finite element discretizations. An example of the additive Schwarz method applied to nonsymmetric but definite matrices is presented for which the abstract assumptions are verified. A variable preconditioner, combining the original nonsymmetric one and a weighted least-squares version of it, is shown to be convergent and provides a viable strategy for using nonsymmetric preconditioners in practice. Numerical results are included to assess the theory and the performance of the proposed preconditioners.

Stability Analysis for Discontinuous Galerkin approximations of the elastodynamics problem

We consider semi-discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations of a general elastodynamics problem, in both {\it displacement} and {\it displacement-stress} formulations. We present the stability analysis of all the methods in the natural energy norm and derive optimal a-priori error estimates. For the displacement-stress formulation, schemes preserving the total energy of the system are introduced and discussed. We include some numerical experiments in three dimensions to verify the theory.

Space Decompositions and Solvers for Discontinuous Galerkin Methods

We present a brief overview of the different domain and space decomposition techniques that enter in developing and analyzing solvers for discontinuous Galerkin methods. Emphasis is given to the novel and distinct features that arise when considering DG discretizations over conforming methods. Connections and differences with the conforming approaches are emphasized.

High order and energy preserving discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Vlasov-Poisson system

We present a computational study for a family of discontinuous Galerkin methods for the one dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system that has been recently introduced. We introduce a slight modification of the methods to allow for feasible computations while preserving the properties of the original methods. We study numerically the verification of the theoretical and convergence analysis, discussing also the conservation properties of the schemes. The methods are validated through their application to some of the benchmarks in the simulation of plasma physics.

A subspace correction method for discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of linear elasticity equations

We study preconditioning techniques for discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of isotropic linear elasticity problems in primal (displacement) formulation. We propose subspace correction methods based on a splitting of the vector valued piecewise linear discontinuous finite element space, that are optimal with respect to the mesh size and the Lame parameters. The pure displacement, the mixed and the traction free problems are discussed in detail. We present a convergence analysis of the proposed preconditioners and include numerical examples that validate the theory and assess the performance of the preconditioners.
