Linear-optical quantum computation with arbitrary error-correcting codes

High-rate quantum error correcting codes mitigate the imposing scale of fault-tolerant quantum computers but require efficient generation of non-local, many-body entanglement. We provide a linear-optical architecture with these properties, compatible with arbitrary codes and Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill qubits on generic lattices, and featuring a natural way to leverage physical noise bias. Simulations of hyperbolic surface codes and bivariate bicycle codes, promising families of quantum low-density parity-check codes, reveal a threshold comparable to the 2D surface code with substantially better encoding rates.

Equivalent noise properties of scalable continuous-variable cluster states

Optical continuous-variable cluster states (CVCSs) in combination with Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill~(GKP) qubits enable fault-tolerant quantum computation so long as these resources are of high enough quality. Previous studies concluded that a particular CVCS, the quad rail lattice~(QRL), exhibits lower GKP gate-error rate than others do. We show in this work that many other experimentally accessible CVCSs also achieve this level of performance by identifying operational equivalences to the QRL. Under this equivalence, the GKP Clifford gate set for each CVCS maps straightforwardly from that of the QRL, inheriting its noise properties. Furthermore, each cluster state has at its heart a balanced four-splitter -- the four-mode extension to a balanced beam splitter. We classify all four-splitters, show they form a single equivalence class under SWAP and parity operators, and we give a construction of any four-splitter with linear optics, thus extending the toolbox for theoretical and experimental cluster-state design and analysis.

Streamlined quantum computing with macronode cluster states

Continuous-variable cluster states allow for fault-tolerant measurement-based quantum computing when used in tandem with the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) encoding of a qubit into a bosonic mode. For quad-rail-lattice macronode cluster states, whose construction is defined by a fixed, low-depth beam splitter network, we show that a Clifford gate and GKP error correction can be simultaneously implemented in a single teleportation step. We give explicit recipes to realize the Clifford generating set, and we calculate the logical gate-error rates given finite squeezing in the cluster-state and GKP resources. We find that logical error rates of $10^{-2}$-$10^{-3}$, compatible with the thresholds of topological codes, can be achieved with squeezing of 11.9-13.7 dB. The protocol presented eliminates noise present in prior schemes and puts the required squeezing for fault tolerance in the range of current state-of-the-art optical experiments. Finally, we show how to produce distillable GKP magic states directly within the cluster state.

Continuous-variable gate teleportation and bosonic-code error correction

We examine continuous-variable gate teleportation using entangled states made from pure product states sent through a beamsplitter. We show that such states are Choi states for a (typically) non-unitary gate, and we derive the associated Kraus operator for teleportation, which can be used to realize non-Gaussian, non-unitary quantum operations on an input state. With this result, we show how gate teleportation is used to perform error correction on bosonic qubits encoded using the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill code. This result is presented in the context of deterministically produced macronode cluster states, generated by constant-depth linear optical networks, supplemented with a probabilistic supply of GKP states. The upshot of our technique is that state injection for both gate teleportation and error correction can be achieved without active squeezing operations -- an experimental bottleneck for quantum optical implementations.

Robust fault tolerance for continuous-variable cluster states with excess anti-squeezing

The immense scalability of continuous-variable cluster states motivates their study as a platform for quantum computing, with fault tolerance possible given sufficient squeezing and appropriately encoded qubits [Menicucci, PRL 112, 120504 (2014)]. Here, we expand the scope of that result by showing that additional anti-squeezing has no effect on the fault-tolerance threshold, removing the purity requirement for experimental continuous-variable cluster-state quantum computing. We emphasize that the appropriate experimental target for fault-tolerant applications is to directly measure 15-17 dB of squeezing in the cluster state rather than the more conservative upper bound of 20.5 dB.
