Theoretical and numerical modeling of Rayleigh wave scattering by an elastic inclusion

This work presents theoretical and numerical models for the backscattering of two-dimensional Rayleigh waves by an elastic inclusion, with the host material being isotropic and the inclusion having arbitrary shape and crystallographic symmetry. The theoretical model is developed based on the reciprocity theorem using the far-field Green's function and the Born approximation, assuming a small acoustic impedance difference between the host and inclusion materials. The numerical finite element (FE) model is established to deliver relatively accurate simulation of the scattering problem and to evaluate the approximations of the theoretical model. Quantitative agreement is observed between the theoretical model and the FE results for arbitrarily-shaped surface/subsurface inclusions with isotropic/anisotropic properties. The agreement is excellent when the wavelength of the Rayleigh wave is larger than, or comparable to, the size of the inclusion, but it deteriorates as the wavelength gets smaller. Also, the agreement decreases with the anisotropy index for inclusions of anisotropic symmetry. The results lay the foundation for using Rayleigh waves for quantitative characterization of surface/subsurface inclusions, while also demonstrating its limitations.

Two-mode light states before and after delocalized single-photon addition

We studied the effect of delocalized single-photon addition (DPA) on two input modes containing four cases: two independent coherent states (CSs), two independent thermal states (TSs), two independent single-mode squeezed vacuums (SVs), and an entangled two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV). In essence, four types of new non-Gaussian entangled light states are generated. We studied three different resources (including entanglement, discorrelation and Wigner negativity) for each two-mode light state. The output states after DPA are entangled, with more parameters and complex structures, characterizing more Wigner negativity or even discorrelation. In contrast, the CSs case is the most tunable protocol, because its negativity under partial transposition, discorrelation, and Wigner logarithmic negativity are more sensitive to superposition phase than those in TSs, SVs and TMSV cases.

Quantitative characterisation of the layered structure within lithium-ion batteries using ultrasonic resonance

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are becoming an important energy storage solution to achieve carbon neutrality, but it remains challenging to characterise their internal states for the assurance of performance, durability and safety. This work reports a simple but powerful non-destructive characterisation technique, based on the formation of ultrasonic resonance from the repetitive layers within LIBs. A physical model is developed from the ground up, to interpret the results from standard experimental ultrasonic measurement setups. As output, the method delivers a range of critical pieces of information about the inner structure of LIBs, such as the number of layers, the average thicknesses of electrodes, the image of internal layers, and the states of charge variations across individual layers. This enables the quantitative tracking of internal cell properties, potentially providing new means of quality control during production processes, and tracking the states of health and charge during operation.

Multi-headed symmetrical superpositions of coherent states

Based on N different coherent states with equal weights and phase-space rotation symmetry, we introduce N-headed incoherent superposition states (NHICSSs) and N-headed coherent superposition states (NHCSSs). These N coherent states are associated with N-order roots of the same complex number. We study and compare properties of NHICSSs and NHCSSs, including average photon number, Mandel Q parameter, quadrature squeezing, Fock matrix elements and Wigner function. Among all these states, only 2HCSS (i.e., Schrodinger cat state) presents quadrature-squeezing effect. Our theoretical results can be used as a reference for researchers in this field.

Universal geometric constraints during epithelial jamming

As an injury heals, an embryo develops, or a carcinoma spreads, epithelial cells systematically change their shape. In each of these processes cell shape is studied extensively, whereas variation of shape from cell-to-cell is dismissed most often as biological noise. But where do cell shape and variation of cell shape come from? Here we report that cell shape and shape variation are mutually constrained through a relationship that is purely geometrical. That relationship is shown to govern maturation of the pseudostratified bronchial epithelial layer cultured from both non-asthmatic and asthmatic donors as well as formation of the ventral furrow in the epithelial monolayer of the Drosophila embryo in vivo. Across these and other vastly different epithelial systems, cell shape variation collapses to a family of distributions that is common to all and potentially universal. That distribution, in turn, is accounted for quantitatively by a mechanistic theory of cell-cell interaction showing that cell shape becomes progressively less elongated and less variable as the layer becomes progressively more jammed. These findings thus uncover a connection between jamming and geometry that is generic -spanning jammed living and inert systems alike- and demonstrate that proximity of the cell layer to the jammed state is the principal determinant of the most primitive features of epithelial cell shape and shape variation.
