Deep Differentiable Random Forests for Age Estimation

Age estimation from facial images is typically cast as a label distribution learning or regression problem, since aging is a gradual progress. Its main challenge is the facial feature space w.r.t. ages is inhomogeneous, due to the large variation in facial appearance across different persons of the same age and the non-stationary property of aging. In this paper, we propose two Deep Differentiable Random Forests methods, Deep Label Distribution Learning Forest (DLDLF) and Deep Regression Forest (DRF), for age estimation. Both of them connect split nodes to the top layer of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and deal with inhomogeneous data by jointly learning input-dependent data partitions at the split nodes and age distributions at the leaf nodes. This joint learning follows an alternating strategy: (1) Fixing the leaf nodes and optimizing the split nodes and the CNN parameters by Back-propagation; (2) Fixing the split nodes and optimizing the leaf nodes by Variational Bounding. Two Deterministic Annealing processes are introduced into the learning of the split and leaf nodes, respectively, to avoid poor local optima and obtain better estimates of tree parameters free of initial values. Experimental results show that DLDLF and DRF achieve state-of-the-art performance on three age estimation datasets.

The study of intrinsic defect state of FeSe with scanning tunneling microscopy

We apply high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy to study intrinsic defect states of bulk FeSe. Four types of intrinsic defects including the type I dumbbell, type II dumbbell, top-layer Se vacancy and inner-layer Se-site defect are extensively analyzed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. From characterized depression and enhancement of density of states measured in a large energy range, the type I dumbbell and type II dumbbell are determined to be the Fe vacancy and Se$_\mathrm{Fe}$ defect, respectively. The top-layer Se vacancy and possible inner-layer Se-site vacancy are also determined by spectroscopy analysis. The determination of defects are compared and largely confirmed in the annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy measurement of the exfoliated FeSe. The detailed mapping of defect states in our experiment lays the foundation for a comparison with complex theoretical calculations in the future.

Radiative transitions and magnetic moments of the charmed and bottom vector mesons in chiral perturbation theory

In this work, we systematically study the radiative decays and magnetic moments of the charmed and bottom vector mesons with chiral perturbation theory up to one-loop level. We present the results in SU(2) and SU(3) cases with the mass splitting in loop diagrams kept and unkept, respectively. The obtained decay rates for $D^\ast$ and $B^\ast$ mesons in SU(3) case with the mass splitting kept are: $Γ_{\bar{D}^{\ast 0}\to \bar{D}^0γ}=16.2^{+6.5}_{-6.0}$ keV, $Γ_{D^{\ast-}\to D^-γ}=0.73^{+0.7}_{-0.3}$ keV, $Γ_{D_s^{\ast-}\to D_s^-γ}= 0.32^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$ keV, and $Γ_{B^{\ast+}\to B^+γ}=0.58^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$ keV, $Γ_{B^{\ast0}\to B^0γ}=0.23^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ keV, $Γ_{B_s^{\ast0}\to B_s^0γ}=0.04^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$ keV. The decay width for $D^{\ast-}\to D^-γ$ is consistent with the experimental measurement. As a byproduct, the full widths of $\bar{D}^{\ast0}$ and $D_s^{\ast-}$ are $Γ_{\mathrm{tot}}(\bar{D}^{\ast0})\simeq77.7^{+26.7}_{-20.5}~\mathrm{keV}$ and $ Γ_{\mathrm{tot}}(D_s^{\ast-})\simeq0.62^{+0.45}_{-0.50}~\mathrm{keV}$, respectively. We also calculate the magnetic moments of the heavy vector mesons. The analytical chiral expressions derived in our work shall be helpful for the extrapolations of lattice QCD simulations in the coming future.

Circumstellar properties of Type Ia supernovae from the helium star donor channel

We investigate predicted circumstellar properties of Type Ia supernova progenitor systems with non-degenerate helium star donors. It has been suggested that systems consisting of a carbon+oxygen white dwarf and a helium star can lead to Type Ia supernova explosions. Binary evolution calculations for the helium star donor channel predict that such a progenitor system is in either a stable helium-shell burning phase or a weak helium-shell flash phase at the time of the Type Ia supernova explosion. By taking the binary evolution models from our previous study, we show that a large fraction of the progenitor systems with a helium star donor have low enough density to explain the current non-detection of radio emission from Type Ia supernovae. Most of the progenitor systems in the weak helium-shell flash phase at the time of the Type Ia supernova explosions, which may dominate the prompt (short delay time) Type Ia supernova population, have both low circumstellar density and a faint helium star donor to account for the non-detection of radio emission and a pre-explosion companion star in SN 2011fe and SN 2014J. We also find some progenitor systems that are consistent with the properties of the companion star candidate identified at the explosion location of Type Iax SN 2012Z.

Adiabatic regularization of power spectrum and stress tensor of relic gravitational wave without low-frequency distortion

Adiabatic regularization is a method to remove UV divergences in quantum fields in curved spacetime. For relic gravitational wave generated during inflation, regularization on all $k$-modes of the power spectrum to 2nd adiabatic order, and of the energy density and pressure to 4th order, respectively, causes low-frequency distortions. To avoid these, we regularize only the short modes inside the horizon during inflation (corresponding to the present frequencies $f \gtrsim 10^{9}$Hz), and keep the long modes intact. Doing this does not violate the energy conservation since the $k$-modes of RGW are independent of each other during inflation. The resulting spectra are UV convergent and simultaneously free of low-frequency distortion, and these properties remain in the present spectra after evolution, in contrast to regularization at the present time which has some distortion or irregularities. The spectra generally exhibit quick oscillations in frequency domain, even if the initial spectra during inflation have no oscillations. This pattern is due to the interference between the positive and negative frequency modes developed during cosmic expansion, and may be probed by future RGW detections.

Second-order cosmological perturbations. IV. Produced by scalar-tensor and tensor-tensor couplings during the radiation dominated stage

We continue to study the 2nd-order cosmological perturbations in synchronous coordinates in the framework of the general relativity (GR) during the radiation dominated (RD) stage, and to focus on the scalar-tensor and tensor-tensor couplings. The 1st-order curl velocity and the associated 1st-order vector metric perturbations are assumed to be vanishing. By analytically solving the 2nd-order Einstein equation and the energy-momentum conservation equations, we obtain the 2nd-order formal solutions (in the integral form) of all the metric perturbations, density contrast and velocity; perform the transformation between the synchronous coordinates; and identify the residual gauge modes in the 2nd-order solutions. In addition, we present the 2nd-order gauge transformations of the solutions from synchronous to Poisson coordinates. To apply these formal solutions to concrete cosmological study, one needs to choose proper initial conditions and do several numerical integrals.

Observation of novel robust edge states without bulk-boundary correspondence in non-Hermitian quantum walks

Recently, the study of non-Hermitian physics has attracted considerable attention. The modified bulk-boundary correspondence has been proposed to understand topological edge states in non-Hermitian static systems. Here we report a new experimental observation of edge states in non-Hermitian periodically driven systems. Some unconventional edge states are found not to be satisfied with the bulk-boundary correspondence when the system belongs to the broken parity-time (PT) symmetric phase. The experiments are performed in our constructed non-Hermitian light quantum walk platform with left and right boundaries, where the beams outside system boundary are blocked subtly at the end of each step. The robust properties of these edge states against to static perturbations and disorder have also been demonstrated experimentally. The finding of robust edge states in broken PT-symmetric phase inspires us to explore a robust transport channel in ubiquitously complex systems with strong dissipation.

Can We Derive Explicit and Implicit Bias from Corpus?

Language is a popular resource to mine speakers' attitude bias, supposing that speakers' statements represent their bias on concepts. However, psychology studies show that people's explicit bias in statements can be different from their implicit bias in mind. Although both explicit and implicit bias are useful for different applications, current automatic techniques do not distinguish them. Inspired by psychological measurements of explicit and implicit bias, we develop an automatic language-based technique to reproduce psychological measurements on large population. By connecting each psychological measurement with the statements containing the certain combination of special words, we derive explicit and implicit bias by understanding the sentiment of corresponding category of statements. Extensive experiments on English and Chinese serious media (Wikipedia) and non-serious media (social media) show that our method successfully reproduce the small-scale psychological observations on large population and achieve new findings.

Exponential convergence for multipole and local expansions and their translations for sources in layered media: 2-D acoustic wave

In this paper, we will first give a derivation of the multipole expansion (ME) and local expansion (LE) for the far field from sources in general 2-D layered media and the multipole-to-local translation (M2L) operator by using the generating function for Bessel functions. Then, we present a rigorous proof of the exponential convergence of the ME, LE, and M2L for 2-D Helmholtz equations in layered media. It is shown that the convergence of ME, LE, and M2L for the reaction field component of the Green's function depends on a polarized distance between the target and a polarized image of the source.

Optical and radio transients after the collapse of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf merger remnants

Super-Chandrasekhar remnants of double white dwarf mergers could sometimes collapse into a rapidly rotating neutron star (NS), accompanying with a mass ejection of a few times $0.01M_{\odot}$. Bright optical transient emission can be produced by the ejecta due to heating by radioactivities and particularly by energy injection from the NS. Since the merger remnants before collapse resemble a star evolving from the asymptotic giant branch phase to the planetary nebula phase, an intense dusty wind is considered to be driven about several thousand years ago before the collapse and surround the remnant at large radii. Therefore, the optical transient emission can be somewhat absorbed and scattered by the dusty wind, which can suppress the peak emission and cause a scattering plateau in optical light curves. Several years later, as the ejecta finally catches up with the wind material, the shock interaction between them can further give rise to a detectable radio transient emission on a timescale of tens of days. Discovery of and observations to such dust-affected optical transients and shock-driven radio transients can help to explore the nature of super-Chandrasekhar merger remnants and as well as the density and type ratios of double white dwarf systems, which is beneficial in assessing their gravitational wave contributions.

The hidden charm pentaquark states and $Σ_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$ interaction in chiral perturbation theory

In this work, we employ the heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory (HHChPT) to calculate the $Σ_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$ potentials to the next-to-leading order. The contact, the one-pion exchange and the two-pion exchange interactions are included. Besides, the mass splittings between the heavy quark spin symmetry (HQSS) multiplets are kept in calculations. Our result shows that neglecting the heavy quark symmetry (HQS) violation effect may be misleading to predict the potentials between the charmed hadrons. We perform numerical analysis with three scenarios. In the first scenario, we relate the low-energy constants (LECs) in the contact terms of $Σ_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$ to those of nucleon systems, and reproduce the $P_c(4312)$ and $P_c(4440)$ as loosely bound states. In the second scenario, we vary the unknown LECs and find a small parameter region in which $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ can coexist as molecular states. In the third scenario, we include the coupled-channel effect on the basis of scenario II, and notice that the three $P_c$ states can be reproduced as molecular states simultaneously in a large region of parameters. Our analytical results can be used for the chiral extrapolations in lattice QCD. With the lattice QCD results in the future as inputs, the identification of the $P_c$ states and predictions for other systems would be more reliable.

Observation of Kerr nonlinearity and Kerr-like nonlinearity induced by terahertz generation in LiNbO$_3$

Femtosecond laser pulses interacting with LiNbO3 has been widely applied in intense terahertz generation, excitation and imaging of phonon polaritons and modulating light. It is of great importance to study the nonlinearities induced by femtosecond laser pulses in LiNbO3. Here, we demonstrate that both Kerr nonlinearity and Kerr-like nonlinearity induced by terahertz wave occur under the interaction between laser pulses and LiNbO3 using optical pump-probe techniques. We show that the contribution of Kerr-like nonlinearity to pump-probe spectra varies with the interaction length because of the phase mismatching between terahertz wave and laser pulse. We also observed the excitation of the low frequency phonon polaritons. Experimental results are in consistent with theoretical calculation.

Off-centre carbon burning in He-accreting carbon-oxygen white dwarfs

The carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) + He star channel is one of the promising ways for producing type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with short delay times. Recent studies found that carbon under the He-shell can be ignited if the mass-accretion rate of CO WD is higher than a critical rate (about 2 * 10^-6 Msun/yr), triggering an inwardly propagating carbon flame. Previous studies usually supposed that the off-centre carbon flame would reach the centre, resulting in the formation of an oxygen-neon (ONe) WD that will collapse into a neutron star. However, the process of off-centre carbon burning is not well studied. This may result in some uncertainties on the final fates of CO WDs. By employing MESA, we simulated the long-term evolution of off-centre carbon burning in He-accreting CO WDs. We found that the inwardly propagating carbon flame transforms the CO WDs into OSi cores directly but not ONe cores owing to the high temperature of the burning front. We suggest that the final fates of the CO WDs may be OSi WDs under the conditions of off-centre carbon burning, or explode as iron-core-collapse SNe if the mass-accretion continues. We also found that the mass-fractions of silicon in the OSi cores are sensitive to the mass-accretion rates.

Circularly polarized states spawning from bound states in the continuum

Bound states in the continuum in periodic photonic systems like photonic crystal slabs are proved to be accompanied by vortex polarization singularities on the photonic bands in the momentum space. The winding structures of polarization states not only widen the field of topological physics but also show great potential that such systems could be applied in polarization manipulating. In this work, we report the phenomenon that by in-plane inversion ($C_2$) symmetry breaking, pairs of circularly polarized states could spawn from the eliminated Bound states in the continuum. Along with the appearance of the circularly polarized states as the two poles of the Poincaré sphere together with linearly polarized states covering the equator, full coverage on the Poincaré sphere could be realized. As an application, ellipticity modulation of linear polarization is demonstrated in the visible frequency range. This phenomenon provides new degree of freedom in modulating polarization.

Estimation of spectrum and parameters of relic gravitational waves using space-borne interferometers

We present a study of spectrum estimation of relic gravitational waves (RGWs) as a Gaussian stochastic background from output signals of future space-borne interferometers, like LISA and ASTROD. As the target of detection, the analytical spectrum of RGWs generated during inflation is described by three parameters: the tensor-scalar ratio, the spectral index and the running index. For RGW detection, we analyze the auto-correlated signals for a single interferometer, and the cross-correlated, integrated as well as un-integrated signals for a pair of interferometers, and give SNR for RGW, and obtain lower limits of the RGW parameters that can be detected. By suppressing noise level, a pair has a sensitivity 2 orders better than a single for one year observation. SNR of LISA will be 4-5 orders higher than that of Advanced LIGO for the default RGW. To estimate the spectrum, we adopt the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation, calculate the mean and covariance of signals, obtain the Gaussian probability density function (PDF) and the likelihood function, and derive the expressions for the Fisher matrix and the equation of the ML estimate for the spectrum. The Newton-Raphson method is used to solve the equation by iteration. When the noise is dominantly large, a single LISA is not effective for estimating the RGW spectrum as the actual noise in signals is not known accurately. For cross-correlating a pair, the spectrum can not be estimated from the integrated output signals either, and only one parameter can be estimated with the other two being either fixed or marginalized. We use the ensemble averaging method to estimate the RGW spectrum from the un-integrated output signals. We also adopt a correlation of un-integrated signals to estimate the spectrum and three parameters of RGW in a Bayesian approach. For all methods, we provide simulations to illustrate their feasibility.

Second-order cosmological perturbations. II. Produced by scalar-tensor and tensor-tensor couplings

We study the second-order perturbations in the Einstein-de Sitter Universe in synchronous coordinate. We solve the second-order perturbed Einstein equation with scalar-tensor, and tensor-tensor couplings between 1st order perturbations, and obtain, for each coupling, the solutions of scalar, vector, tensor metric perturbations, including both the growing and decaying modes for general initial conditions. We perform general synchronous-to-synchronous gauge transformations up to 2nd order, which are generated by a 1st order vector field and a 2nd order vector field, and obtain all the residual gauge modes of the 2nd order metric perturbations in synchronous coordinates. We show that only the 2nd order vector field is effective for the 2nd order transformations that we consider because the 1st order vector field was already fixed in obtaining the 1st order perturbations. In particular, the 2nd order tensor is invariant under 2nd order gauge transformations using $ξ^{(2)μ}$ only, just like the 1st order tensor is invariant under 1st order transformations.

Enhanced flexoelectricity at reduced dimensions revealed by mechanically tunable quantum tunnelling

Flexoelectricity is a universal electromechanical coupling effect whereby all dielectric materials polarize in response to strain gradients. In particular, nanoscale flexoelectricity promises exotic phenomena and functions, but reliable characterization methods are required to unlock its potential. Here, we report anomalous mechanical control of quantum tunnelling that allows for characterizing nanoscale flexoelectricity. By applying strain gradients with an atomic force microscope tip, we systematically polarize an ultrathin film of otherwise nonpolar SrTiO$_{3}$, and simultaneously measure tunnel current across it. The measured tunnel current exhibits critical behaviour as a function of strain gradients, which manifests large modification of tunnel barrier profiles via flexoelectricity. Further analysis of this critical behaviour reveals significantly enhanced flexocoupling strength in ultrathin SrTiO$_{3}$, compared to that in bulk, rendering flexoelectricity more potent at the nanoscale. Our study not only suggests possible applications exploiting dynamic mechanical control of quantum effect, but also paves the way to characterize nanoscale flexoelectricity.

Enhancement of Spintronic Terahertz Emission via Annealing in Ferromagnetic Heterostructures

We systematically investigate the influence of annealing effect on terahertz (THz) generation from CoFeB based magnetic nanofilms driven by femtosecond laser pulses. Three times enhancement of THz yields are achieved in W/CoFeB through annealing effect, and double boosting is obtained in Pt/CoFeB. The mechanism of annealing effect originates from the increase of hot electron mean free path induced by crystallization, which is experimentally corroborated by THz transmission measurement on time-domain spectroscopy. Comparison studies of the thickness dependent THz efficiency after annealing are also implemented, and we eventually conclude that annealing and thickness optimization are of importance for scaling up THz intensity. Our observations not only deepen understanding of the spintronic THz radiation mechanism but also provide normal platform for high speed spintronic opto-electronic devices.
