Fast and Accurate Computation of Time-Domain Acoustic Scattering Problems with Exact Nonreflecting Boundary Conditions

This paper is concerned with fast and accurate computation of exterior wave equations truncated via exact circular or spherical nonreflecting boundary conditions (NRBCs, which are known to be nonlocal in both time and space). We first derive analytic expressions for the underlying convolution kernels, which allow for a rapid and accurate evaluation of the convolution with $O(N_t)$ operations over $N_t$ successive time steps. To handle the onlocality in space, we introduce the notion of boundary perturbation, which enables us to handle general bounded scatters by solving a sequence of wave equations in a regular domain. We propose an efficient spectral-Galerkin solver with Newmark's time integration for the truncated wave equation in the regular domain. We also provide ample numerical results to show high-order accuracy of NRBCs and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Automated Line Tracking of lambda-DNA for Single-Molecule Imaging

We describe a straightforward, automated line tracking method to visualize within optical resolution the contour of linear macromolecules as they rearrange shape as a function of time by Brownian diffusion and under external fields such as electrophoresis. Three sequential stages of analysis underpin this method: first, "feature finding" to discriminate signal from noise; second, "line tracking" to approximate those shapes as lines; third, "temporal consistency check" to discriminate reasonable from unreasonable fitted conformations in the time domain. The automated nature of this data analysis makes it straightforward to accumulate vast quantities of data while excluding the unreliable parts of it. We implement the analysis on fluorescence images of lambda-DNA molecules in agarose gel to demonstrate its capability to produce large datasets for subsequent statistical analysis.

Totally Corrective Multiclass Boosting with Binary Weak Learners

In this work, we propose a new optimization framework for multiclass boosting learning. In the literature, AdaBoost.MO and AdaBoost.ECC are the two successful multiclass boosting algorithms, which can use binary weak learners. We explicitly derive these two algorithms' Lagrange dual problems based on their regularized loss functions. We show that the Lagrange dual formulations enable us to design totally-corrective multiclass algorithms by using the primal-dual optimization technique. Experiments on benchmark data sets suggest that our multiclass boosting can achieve a comparable generalization capability with state-of-the-art, but the convergence speed is much faster than stage-wise gradient descent boosting. In other words, the new totally corrective algorithms can maximize the margin more aggressively.

The helium star donor channel for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae and their surviving companion stars

The nature of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is still unclear. Employing Eggleton's stellar evolution code with the optically thick wind assumption, we systematically studied the He star donor channel of SNe Ia, in which a carbon-oxygen white dwarf accretes material from a He main-sequence star or a He subgiant to increase its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass. We mapped out the initial parameters for producing SNe Ia in the orbital period--secondary mass plane for various WD masses from this channel. According to a detailed binary population synthesis approach, we find that this channel can produce SNe Ia with short delay times (~100Myr) implied by recent observations. We obtained many properties of the surviving companions of this channel after SN explosion, which can be verified by future observations. We also find that the surviving companions from the SN explosion scenario have a high spatial velocity (>400km/s), which could be an alternative origin for hypervelocity stars (HVSs), especially for HVSs such as US 708.

A study on the sharp knee and fine structures of cosmic ray spectra

The paper investigates the overall and detailed features of cosmic ray (CR) spectra in the knee region using the scenario of nuclei-photon interactions around the acceleration sources. Young supernova remnants can be the physical realities of such kind of CR acceleration sites. The results show that the model can well explain the following problems simultaneously with one set of source parameters: the knee of CR spectra and the sharpness of the knee, the detailed irregular structures of CR spectra, the so-called "component B" of Galactic CRs, and the electron/positron excesses reported by recent observations. The coherent explanation serves as evidence that at least a portion of CRs might be accelerated at the sources similar to young supernova remnants, and one set of source parameters indicates that this portion mainly comes from standard sources or from a single source.

A likely candidate of type Ia supernova progenitors: the X-ray pulsating companion of the hot subdwarf HD 49798

HD 49798 is a hydrogen depleted subdwarf O6 star and has an X-ray pulsating companion (RX J0648.0-4418). The X-ray pulsating companion is a massive white dwarf. Employing Eggleton's stellar evolution code with the optically thick wind assumption, we find that the hot subdwarf HD 49798 and its X-ray pulsating companion could produce a type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in future evolution. This implies that the binary system is a likely candidate of SN Ia progenitors. We also discussed the possibilities of some other WD + He star systems (e.g. V445 Pup and KPD 1930+2752) for producing SNe Ia.

WD+RG systems as the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play an important role in the study of cosmic evolution, especially in cosmology. There are several progenitor models for SNe Ia proposed in the past years. In this paper, by considering the effect of accretion disk instability on the evolution of white dwarf (WD) binaries, we performed detailed binary evolution calculations for the WD + red-giant (RG) channel of SNe Ia, in which a carbon-oxygen WD accretes material from a RG star to increase its mass to the Chandrasekhar mass limit. According to these calculations, we mapped out the initial and final parameters for SNe Ia in the orbital period--secondary mass plane for various WD masses for this channel. We discussed the influence of the variation of the duty cycle value on the regions for producing SNe Ia. Similar to previous studies, this work also indicates that the long-period dwarf novae offer a possible ways for producing SNe Ia. Meanwhile, we find that the surviving companion stars from this channel have a low mass after SN explosion, which may provide a means for the formation of the population of single low-mass WDs (<0.45Msun).

The helium star donor channel for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae with different metallicities

Context: The nature of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is still unclear. Metallicities may have an important effect on their properties. Aims: In this paper, we study the He star donor channel towards SNe Ia comprehensively and systematically at various metallicities. Methods: Employing Eggleton's stellar evolution code with the optically thick wind assumption, we calculated about 10 000 WD + He star systems and obtained SN Ia production regions of the He star donor channel with metallicities Z=0.03, 0.02, 0.004 and 0.0001. According to a detailed binary population synthesis approach, we also obtained SN Ia birthrates at various metallicities. Results: Our study shows that both the initial mass of the He donor star and the initial orbital period for SNe Ia increase with metallicity, while the minimum initial mass of the carbon--oxygen white dwarfs producing SNe Ia decreases with metallicity. For a constant star-formation galaxy, SN Ia birthrates increase with metallicity. If a single starburst is assumed, SNe Ia occur systemically earlier and the peak value of the birthrate is larger for a high Z, and the He star donor channel with different metallicities can produce the young SNe Ia with delay times $\sim$45-220Myr.

Companion stars of Type Ia supernovae and single low-mass white dwarfs

Recent investigations of the WD + MS channel of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) imply that this channel may be the main contribution to the old population (>1Gyr) of SNe Ia. In the WD + MS channel, the WD could accrete material from a main-sequence or a slightly evolved star until it reaches the Chandrasekhar mass limit. The companions in this channel would survive after SN explosion and show distinguishing properties. In this Letter, based on SN Ia production regions of the WD + MS channel and three formation channels of WD + MS systems, we performed a detailed binary population synthesis study to obtain the properties of the surviving companions. The properties can be verified by future observations. We find that the surviving companions of the old SNe Ia have a low mass, which provides a possible way to explain the formation of the population of single low-mass WDs (<0.45Msun).

Birthrates and delay times of Type Ia supernovae

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play an important role in diverse areas of astrophysics, from the chemical evolution of galaxies to observational cosmology. However, the nature of the progenitors of SNe Ia is still unclear. In this paper, according to a detailed binary population synthesis study, we obtained SN Ia birthrates and delay times from different progenitor models, and compared them with observations. We find that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from the double-degenerate (DD) model is close to those inferred from observations, while the birthrate from the single-degenerate (SD) model accounts for only about 1/2-2/3 of the observations. If a single starburst is assumed, the distribution of the delay times of SNe Ia from the SD model is a weak bimodality, where the WD + He channel contributes to the SNe Ia with delay times shorter than 100Myr, and the WD + MS and WD + RG channels to those with age longer than 1Gyr.

We mapped out the parameter spaces for producing SNe Ia. According to a detailed binary population synthesis approach, we find that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from this channel is $\sim$$0.3\times 10^{-3} {\rm yr}^{-1}$, and that this channel can produce SNe Ia with short delay times ($\sim45-$140 Myr). We also find that the surviving companion stars in this channel have a high spatial velocity ($>$400 km/s) after SN explosion, which could be an alternative origin for hypervelocity stars (HVSs), especially for HVSs such as US 708.

Non-Markovian effect on the quantum discord

We study the non-Markovian effect on the dynamics of the quantum discord by exactly solving a model consisting of two independent qubits subject to two zero-temperature non-Markovian reservoirs, respectively. Considering the two qubits initially prepared in Bell-like or extended Werner-like states, we show that there is no occurrence of the sudden death, but only instantaneous disappearance of the quantum discord at some time points, in comparison to the entanglement sudden death in the same range of the parameters of interest. It implies that the quantum discord is more useful than the entanglement to describe quantum correlation involved in quantum systems.

The progenitors of Type Ia supernovae with long delay times

The nature of the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is still unclear. In this paper, by considering the effect of the instability of accretion disk on the evolution of white dwarf (WD) binaries, we performed binary evolution calculations for about 2400 close WD binaries, in which a carbon--oxygen WD accretes material from a main-sequence star or a slightly evolved subgiant star (WD + MS channel), or a red-giant star (WD + RG channel) to increase its mass to the Chandrasekhar (Ch) mass limit. According to these calculations, we mapped out the initial parameters for SNe Ia in the orbital period--secondary mass ($\log P^{\rm i}-M^{\rm i}_2$) plane for various WD masses for these two channels, respectively. We confirm that WDs in the WD + MS channel with a mass as low as $0.61 M_\odot$ can accrete efficiently and reach the Ch limit, while the lowest WD mass for the WD + RG channel is $1.0 \rm M_\odot$. We have implemented these results in a binary population synthesis study to obtain the SN Ia birthrates and the evolution of SN Ia birthrates with time for both a constant star formation rate and a single starburst. We find that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from the WD + MS channel is $\sim$$1.8\times 10^{-3} {\rm yr}^{-1}$ according to our standard model, which is higher than previous results. However, similar to previous studies, the birthrate from the WD + RG channel is still low ($\sim$$3\times 10^{-5} {\rm yr}^{-1}$). We also find that about one third of SNe Ia from the WD + MS channel and all SNe Ia from the WD + RG channel can contribute to the old populations ($\ga$1 Gyr) of SN Ia progenitors.

Evolving to Type Ia Supernovae with Short Delay Times

The single-degenerate model is currently a favourable progenitor model for Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Recent investigations on the WD + He star channel of the single-degenerate model imply that this channel is noteworthy for producing SNe Ia. In this paper we studied SN Ia birthrates and delay times of this channel via a detailed binary population synthesis approach. We found that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from the WD + He star channel is $\sim 0.3\times 10^{-3} {\rm yr}^{-1}$ according to our standard model, and that this channel can explain SNe Ia with short delay times ($\sim4.5\times10^7 - 1.4\times10^8$ yr). Meanwhile, these WD + He star systems may be related to the young supersoft X-ray sources prior to SN Ia explosions.

On the e$^+$e$^-$ excesses and the knee of the cosmic ray spectra -- hints of cosmic rays acceleration at young supernova remnants

Supernova remnants have long been regarded as sources of the Galactic cosmic rays up to petaelectronvolts, but convincing evidence is still lacking. In this work we explore the common origin of the subtle features of the cosmic ray spectra, such as the knee of cosmic ray spectra and the excesses of electron/positron fluxes recently observed by ATIC, H.E.S.S., Fermi-LAT and PAMELA. Numerical calculation shows that those features of cosmic ray spectra can be well reproduced in a scenario with e$^+$e$^-$ pair production by interactions between high energy cosmic rays and background photons in an environment similar to the young supernova remnant. The success of such a coherent explanation serves in turn as an evidence that at least a portion of cosmic rays might be accelerated at young supernova remnants.

Distribution of $^{56}$Ni Yields of Type Ia Supernovae and its Implication for Progenitors

The amount of $^{56}$Ni produced in type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion is probably the most important physical parameter underlying the observed correlation of SN Ia luminosities with their light curves. Based on an empirical relation between the $^{56}$Ni mass and the light curve parameter $\triangle m_{15}$, we obtained rough estimates of the $^{56}$Ni mass for a large sample of nearby SNe Ia with the aim of exploring the diversity in SN Ia. We found that the derived $^{56}$Ni masses for different SNe Ia could vary by a factor of ten (e.g., $M_{\rm Ni}=0.1 - 1.3$ $M_{\odot}$), which cannot be explained in terms of the standard Chandrasekhar-mass model (with a $^{56}$Ni mass production of 0.4 -- 0.8 $M_{\odot}$). Different explosion and/or progenitor models are clearly required for various SNe Ia, in particular, for those extremely nickel-poor and nickel-rich producers. The nickel-rich (with $M_{\rm Ni}$ $>$ 0.8 $M_{\odot}$) SNe Ia are very luminous and may have massive progenitors exceeding the Chandrasekhar-mass limit since extra progenitor fuel is required to produce more $^{56}$Ni to power the light curve. This is also consistent with the finding that the intrinsically bright SNe Ia prefer to occur in stellar environments of young and massive stars. For example, 75% SNe Ia in spirals have $Δm_{15} < 1.2$ while this ratio is only 18% in E/S0 galaxies. On the other hand, the nickel-poor SNe Ia (with $M_{\rm Ni}$ $<$ 0.2 $M_{\odot}$) may invoke the sub-Chandrasekhar model, as most of them were found in early-type E/S0 galaxies dominated by the older and low-mass stellar populations. This indicates that SNe Ia in spiral and E/S0 galaxies have progenitors of different properties.

Anomalous pressure behavior of tangential modes in single-wall carbon nanotubes

Using the molecular dynamics simulations and the force constant model we have studied the Raman-active tangential modes (TMs) of a (10, 0) single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) under hydrostatic pressure. With increasing pressure, the atomic motions in the three TMs present obvious diversities. The pressure derivative of E1g, A1g, and E2g mode frequency shows an increased value (), a constant value (), and a negative value () above 5.3 GPa, respectively. The intrinsic characteristics of TMs consumedly help to understand the essence of the experimental T band of CNT. The anomalous pressure behavior of the TMs frequencies may be originated from the tube symmetry alteration from D10h to D2h then to C2h.
