TransGCN:Coupling Transformation Assumptions with Graph Convolutional Networks for Link Prediction

Link prediction is an important and frequently studied task that contributes to an understanding of the structure of knowledge graphs (KGs) in statistical relational learning. Inspired by the success of graph convolutional networks (GCN) in modeling graph data, we propose a unified GCN framework, named TransGCN, to address this task, in which relation and entity embeddings are learned simultaneously. To handle heterogeneous relations in KGs, we introduce a novel way of representing heterogeneous neighborhood by introducing transformation assumptions on the relationship between the subject, the relation, and the object of a triple. Specifically, a relation is treated as a transformation operator transforming a head entity to a tail entity. Both translation assumption in TransE and rotation assumption in RotatE are explored in our framework. Additionally, instead of only learning entity embeddings in the convolution-based encoder while learning relation embeddings in the decoder as done by the state-of-art models, e.g., R-GCN, the TransGCN framework trains relation embeddings and entity embeddings simultaneously during the graph convolution operation, thus having fewer parameters compared with R-GCN. Experiments show that our models outperform the-state-of-arts methods on both FB15K-237 and WN18RR.

Contextual Graph Attention for Answering Logical Queries over Incomplete Knowledge Graphs

Recently, several studies have explored methods for using KG embedding to answer logical queries. These approaches either treat embedding learning and query answering as two separated learning tasks, or fail to deal with the variability of contributions from different query paths. We proposed to leverage a graph attention mechanism to handle the unequal contribution of different query paths. However, commonly used graph attention assumes that the center node embedding is provided, which is unavailable in this task since the center node is to be predicted. To solve this problem we propose a multi-head attention-based end-to-end logical query answering model, called Contextual Graph Attention model(CGA), which uses an initial neighborhood aggregation layer to generate the center embedding, and the whole model is trained jointly on the original KG structure as well as the sampled query-answer pairs. We also introduce two new datasets, DB18 and WikiGeo19, which are rather large in size compared to the existing datasets and contain many more relation types, and use them to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. Our result shows that the proposed CGA with fewer learnable parameters consistently outperforms the baseline models on both datasets as well as Bio dataset.

Frame and Feature-Context Video Super-Resolution

For video super-resolution, current state-of-the-art approaches either process multiple low-resolution (LR) frames to produce each output high-resolution (HR) frame separately in a sliding window fashion or recurrently exploit the previously estimated HR frames to super-resolve the following frame. The main weaknesses of these approaches are: 1) separately generating each output frame may obtain high-quality HR estimates while resulting in unsatisfactory flickering artifacts, and 2) combining previously generated HR frames can produce temporally consistent results in the case of short information flow, but it will cause significant jitter and jagged artifacts because the previous super-resolving errors are constantly accumulated to the subsequent frames. In this paper, we propose a fully end-to-end trainable frame and feature-context video super-resolution (FFCVSR) network that consists of two key sub-networks: local network and context network, where the first one explicitly utilizes a sequence of consecutive LR frames to generate local feature and local SR frame, and the other combines the outputs of local network and the previously estimated HR frames and features to super-resolve the subsequent frame. Our approach takes full advantage of the inter-frame information from multiple LR frames and the context information from previously predicted HR frames, producing temporally consistent high-quality results while maintaining real-time speed by directly reusing previous features and frames. Extensive evaluations and comparisons demonstrate that our approach produces state-of-the-art results on a standard benchmark dataset, with advantages in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and visual quality over the existing approaches.

Topological characterizations of an extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model perhaps is the easiest and the most basic model for topological excitations. Many variations and extensions of the SSH model have been proposed and explored to better understand both fundamental and novel aspects of topological physics. The SSH4 model has been proposed theoretically as an extended SSH model with higher dimension (the internal dimension changes from two to four). It has been proposed that the winding number in this system can be determined through a higher-dimensional extension of the mean chiral displacement measurement, however this has not yet been verified in experiment. Here we report the realization of this model with ultracold atoms in a momentum lattice. We verify the winding number through measurement of the mean chiral displacement in a system with higher internal dimension, we map out the topological phase transition in this system, and we confirm the topological edge state by observation of the quench dynamics when atoms are initially prepared at the system boundary.

A general Zeeman slower for type-II transitions and polar molecules

We proposed a general Zeeman slower scheme applicable to the majority of the laser-coolable molecules. Different from previous schemes, the key idea of our scheme lies in that the compensation of the detuning with the magnetic field is done for the repumping laser instead of the cooling laser. Only atoms or molecules with the right velocity will be repumped and laser slowed. Such scheme is more feasible for molecules with complex energy sturcutres. We apply this scheme for molecules with large Landé g-factor of the excited states and polyatomic molecules, and it shows a better slowing efficiency.

A study on dynamical complexity of noise induced blood flow

In this article, the dynamics and complexity of a noise induced blood flow system have been investigated. Changes in the dynamics have been recognized by measuring the periodicity over significant parameters. Chaotic as well as non-chaotic regimes have also been classified. Further, dynamical complexity has been studied by phase space based weighted entropy. Numerical results show a strong correlation between the dynamics and complexity of the noise induced system. The correlation has been confirmed by a cross-correlation analysis.

Cycle-IR: Deep Cyclic Image Retargeting

Supervised deep learning techniques have achieved great success in various fields due to getting rid of the limitation of handcrafted representations. However, most previous image retargeting algorithms still employ fixed design principles such as using gradient map or handcrafted features to compute saliency map, which inevitably restricts its generality. Deep learning techniques may help to address this issue, but the challenging problem is that we need to build a large-scale image retargeting dataset for the training of deep retargeting models. However, building such a dataset requires huge human efforts. In this paper, we propose a novel deep cyclic image retargeting approach, called Cycle-IR, to firstly implement image retargeting with a single deep model, without relying on any explicit user annotations. Our idea is built on the reverse mapping from the retargeted images to the given input images. If the retargeted image has serious distortion or excessive loss of important visual information, the reverse mapping is unlikely to restore the input image well. We constrain this forward-reverse consistency by introducing a cyclic perception coherence loss. In addition, we propose a simple yet effective image retargeting network (IRNet) to implement the image retargeting process. Our IRNet contains a spatial and channel attention layer, which is able to discriminate visually important regions of input images effectively, especially in cluttered images. Given arbitrary sizes of input images and desired aspect ratios, our Cycle-IR can produce visually pleasing target images directly. Extensive experiments on the standard RetargetMe dataset show the superiority of our Cycle-IR. In addition, our Cycle-IR outperforms the Multiop method and obtains the best result in the user study. Code is available at https://github.com/mintanwei/Cycle-IR.

Laser cooling with adiabatic passage for diatomic molecules

We present a magnetically enhanced laser cooling scheme applicable to multi-level type-II transitions and further diatomic molecules with adiabatic transfer. An angled magnetic field is introduced to not only remix the dark states, but also decompose the multi-level system into several two-level sub-systems in time-ordering, hence allowing multiple photon momentum transfer. For complex multi-level diatomic molecules, although the enhancement gets weakened, our simulations still predict a $\sim 4\times$ larger value of the maximum achievable cooling force and a wider coolable velocity range compared to the conventional Doppler cooling. A reduced dependence on spontaneous emission of this scheme makes laser cooling a molecule with leakage channels become a feasibility.

Characterization of the stimulated excitation in a driven Bose-Einstein condensate

We apply the time-dependent generalized Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (td-GHFB) theory to describe the stimulated excitation driven by periodically modulating the interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). A comparison with the results calculated from the typical Bogoliubov approximation indicates that the additional interaction terms contributed by the excited modes play a significant role to explain the dynamics of the stimulating process. The td-GHFB model has not only painted a clear picture of the density wave propagation, but also partly explained the generation of the second order harmonic of the excited modes. The theoretical framework can be directly employed to study similar driven processes.

Chirality-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency based on a double semi-periodic helix metastructure

A chiral metastructure composed of spatially separated double semi-periodic helices is proposed and investigated theoretically and experimentally in this Letter. Chirality-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and a slow light effect in the microwave region are observed from a numerical parameter study, while experimental results from the 3D printing sample yield good agreement with the theoretical findings. The studied EIT phenomenon arises as a result of destructive interference by coupled resonances, and the proposed chiral metastructure can be applied in areas such as polarization communication, pump-probe characterization, and quantum computing areas.

From the Periphery to the Center: Information Brokerage in an Evolving Network

Interpersonal ties are pivotal to individual efficacy, status and performance in an agent society. This paper explores three important and interrelated themes in social network theory: the center/periphery partition of the network; network dynamics; and social integration of newcomers. We tackle the question: How would a newcomer harness information brokerage to integrate into a dynamic network going from periphery to center? We model integration as the interplay between the newcomer and the dynamics network and capture information brokerage using a process of relationship building. We analyze theoretical guarantees for the newcomer to reach the center through tactics; proving that a winning tactic always exists for certain types of network dynamics. We then propose three tactics and show their superior performance over alternative methods on four real-world datasets and four network models. In general, our tactics place the newcomer to the center by adding very few new edges on dynamic networks with approximately 14000 nodes.

Radiative deflection of a BaF molecular beam from the optical cycling

We demonstrate a quasi optical cycling for the $X(v=0)\to A(v'=0)$ transition and a radiative force induced deflection on the buffer-gas cooled BaF molecular beam. The laser induced fluorescence enhancement with additional sidebands and a polarization modulation scheme indicates that the hyperfine states and the Zeeman sublevels are closed. The quasi optical cycling by repumping the $X(v=1)\to A(v'=0)$ leads to a $\sim$ 0.8 mm deflection of the beam via scattering $\sim$ 150 photons per molecule, in good agreement with the predictions from our multi-level rate equation model. Further improvement by closing the leakage $X(v=2)$ and $Δ$ state allows scattering thousands of photons, and laser cooling and slowing of BaF.

A novel analog power supply for gain control of the Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC)

Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPM) are regarded as novel photo-detectors to replace conventional Photo-Multiplier Tubes (PMTs). However, the breakdown voltage dependence on the ambient temperature results in a gain variation of $\sim$3$\% /^{\circ} \mathrm C$. This severely limits the application of this device in experiments with wide range of operating temperature, especially in space missions. An experimental setup was established to investigate the temperature and bias voltage dependence of gain for the Multi-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC). The gain and breakdown voltage dependence on operating temperature of an MPPC can be approximated by a linear function, which is similar to the behavior of a zener diode. The measured temperature coefficient of the breakdown voltage is $(59.4 \pm 0.4$ mV)$/^{\circ} \mathrm C$. According to this fact, an analog power supply based on two zener diodes and an operational amplifier was designed with a positive temperature coefficient. The measured temperature dependence for the designed power supply is between 63.65 to 64.61~mV/$^{\circ} \mathrm C$ at different output voltages. The designed power supply can bias the MPPC at an over-voltage with a temperature variation of $\sim$ 5~mV$/^{\circ} \mathrm C$. The gain variation of the MPPC biased at over-voltage of 2~V was reduced from 2.8$\% /^{\circ} \mathrm C$ to 0.3$\% /^{\circ} \mathrm C$ when biased the MPPC with the designed power supply for gain control. Detailed design and performance of the analog power supply in the temperature range from -42.7$^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ to 20.9$^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ will be discussed in this paper.

Cold collision and high-resolution spectroscopy of buffer gas cooled BaF Molecule

We reported a detailed experimental study of the cold collision of Barium monofluoride (BaF) with buffer gas and the high-resolution spectroscopy relevant with direct laser cooling. BaF molecules are efficiently produced with laser ablation and buffer-gas cooled in a cryogenic apparatus. The laser cooling relevant transition $|X^2Σ, v=0, N=1\rangle$ to $|A^2Π, v'=0, J'=1/2\rangle$ is identified. The collision cross section with buffer gas is measured to be $1.4(7)\times10^{-14} cm^{-2}$, which is very suitable for buffer gas cooling. Both rotational and vibrational temperatures are effectively cooled, and large mount of molecules are quenched into the desired states. Our study provides an important benchmark for further laser cooling of BaF molecule.

Structures, Branching Ratios and Laser Cooling Scheme for 138BaF Molecule

For laser cooling considerations, we have theoretically investigated the electronic, rovibrational and hypefine structures of BaF molecule. The highly diagonal Franck-Condon factors and the branching ratios for all possible transitions within the lowest-lying four electronic states have also been calculated. Meanwhile, the mixing between metastable A'2Δ and A2Π states and further the lifetime of the Δ state have been estimated since the loss procedure via Δ state would like fatally destroy the main quasi-cycling Σ-Π transition for cooling and trapping. The resultant hyperfine splittings of each rovibrational states in X2Σ+ state provide benchmarksfor sideband modulations of cooling and repumping lasers and remixing microwaves to address all necessary levels. The calculated Zeeman shift and g-factors for both X and A states serve as benchmarks for selections of the trapping laser polarizations. Our study paves the way for future laser cooling and magneto-optical trapping of the BaF molecule.

Strongly interacting ultracold polar molecules

This paper reviews recent advances in the study of strongly interacting systems of dipolar molecules. Heteronuclear molecules feature large and tunable electric dipole moments, which give rise to long-range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. Ultracold samples of dipolar molecules with long-range interactions offer a unique platform for quantum simulations and the study of correlated many-body physics. We provide an introduction to the physics of dipolar quantum gases, both electric and magnetic, and summarize the multipronged efforts to bring dipolar molecules into the quantum regime. We discuss in detail the recent experimental progress in realizing and studying strongly interacting systems of polar molecules trapped in optical lattices, with particular emphasis on the study of interacting spin systems and non-equilibrium quantum magnetism. Finally, we conclude with a brief discussion of the future prospects for studies of strongly interacting dipolar molecules.

An in-situ method for measuring the non-linear response of a Fabry-Perot cavity

High finesse Fabry-Perot(FP) cavity is a very important frequency reference for laser stabiliza- tion, and is widely used for applications such as precision measurement, laser cooling of ions or molecules. But the non-linear response of the piezoelectric ceramic transducer (PZT) in the FP cav- ity limits the performance of the laser stabilization. Measuring and controlling such non-linearity are important. Here we report an in-situ, optical method to characterize this non-linearity by measuring the resonance signals of a dual-frequency laser. The differential measurement makes it insensitive to laser and cavity drifting, and has a very high sensitivity. It can be applied for various applications with PZT, especially in an optical lab.

Creation of a low-entropy quantum gas of polar molecules in an optical lattice

Ultracold polar molecules, with their long-range electric dipolar interactions, offer a unique platform for studying correlated quantum many-body phenomena such as quantum magnetism. However, realizing a highly degenerate quantum gas of molecules with a low entropy per particle has been an outstanding experimental challenge. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a low entropy molecular quantum gas by creating molecules at individual sites of a three-dimensional optical lattice that is initially loaded from a low entropy mixture of K and Rb quantum gases. We make use of the quantum statistics and interactions of the initial atom gases to load into the optical lattice, simultaneously and with good spatial overlap, a Mott insulator of bosonic Rb atoms and a single-band insulator of fermionic K atoms. Then, using magneto-association and optical state transfer, we efficiently produce ground-state molecules in the lattice at those sites that contained one Rb and one K atom. The achieved filling fraction of 25% indicates an entropy as low as $2.2\,k_B$ per molecule. This low-entropy molecular quantum gas opens the door to novel studies of transport and entanglement propagation in a many-body system with long-range dipolar interactions.
