SensatUrban: Learning Semantics from Urban-Scale Photogrammetric Point Clouds

With the recent availability and affordability of commercial depth sensors and 3D scanners, an increasing number of 3D (i.e., RGBD, point cloud) datasets have been publicized to facilitate research in 3D computer vision. However, existing datasets either cover relatively small areas or have limited semantic annotations. Fine-grained understanding of urban-scale 3D scenes is still in its infancy. In this paper, we introduce SensatUrban, an urban-scale UAV photogrammetry point cloud dataset consisting of nearly three billion points collected from three UK cities, covering 7.6 km^2. Each point in the dataset has been labelled with fine-grained semantic annotations, resulting in a dataset that is three times the size of the previous existing largest photogrammetric point cloud dataset. In addition to the more commonly encountered categories such as road and vegetation, urban-level categories including rail, bridge, and river are also included in our dataset. Based on this dataset, we further build a benchmark to evaluate the performance of state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms. In particular, we provide a comprehensive analysis and identify several key challenges limiting urban-scale point cloud understanding. The dataset is available at http://point-cloud-analysis.cs.ox.ac.uk.

Distributed Urban Freeway Traffic Optimization Considering Congestion Propagation

Effective traffic optimization strategies can improve the performance of transportation networks significantly. Most exiting works develop traffic optimization strategies depending on the local traffic states of congested road segments, where the congestion propagation is neglected. This paper proposes a novel distributed traffic optimization method for urban freeways considering the potential congested road segments, which are called potential-homogeneous-area. The proposed approach is based on the intuition that the evolution of congestion may affect the neighbor segments due to the mobility of traffic flow. We identify potential-homogeneous-area by applying our proposed temporal-spatial lambda-connectedness method using historical traffic data. Further, global dynamic capacity constraint of this area is integrated with cell transmission model (CTM) in the traffic optimization problem. To reduce computational complexity and improve scalability, we propose a fully distributed algorithm to solve the problem, which is based on the partial augmented Lagrangian and dual-consensus alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). By this means, distributed coordination of ramp metering and variable speed limit control is achieved. We prove that the proposed algorithm converges to the optimal solution so long as the traffic optimization objective is convex. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by macroscopic simulation using real data of Shanghai, China.

A Hierarchical Control Framework for Drift Maneuvering of Autonomous Vehicles

Drift control is significant to the safety of autonomous vehicles when there is a sudden loss of traction due to external conditions such as rain or snow. It is a challenging control problem due to the presence of significant sideslip and nearly full saturation of the tires. In this paper, we focus on the control of drift maneuvers following circular paths with either fixed or moving centers, subject to change in the tire-ground interaction, which are common training tasks for drift enthusiasts and can therefore be used as benchmarks of the performance of drift control. In order to achieve the above tasks, we propose a novel hierarchical control architecture which decouples the curvature and center control of the trajectory. In particular, an outer loop stabilizes the center by tuning the target curvature, and an inner loop tracks the curvature using a feedforward/feedback controller enhanced by an $\mathcal{L}_1$ adaptive component. The hierarchical architecture is flexible because the inner loop is task-agnostic and adaptive to changes in tire-road interaction, which allows the outer loop to be designed independent of low-level dynamics, opening up the possibility of incorporating sophisticated planning algorithms. We implement our control strategy on a simulation platform as well as on a 1/10 scale Radio-Control~(RC) car, and both the simulation and experiment results illustrate the effectiveness of our strategy in achieving the above described set of drift maneuvering tasks.

PointLoc: Deep Pose Regressor for LiDAR Point Cloud Localization

In this paper, we present a novel end-to-end learning-based LiDAR relocalization framework, termed PointLoc, which infers 6-DoF poses directly using only a single point cloud as input, without requiring a pre-built map. Compared to RGB image-based relocalization, LiDAR frames can provide rich and robust geometric information about a scene. However, LiDAR point clouds are unordered and unstructured making it difficult to apply traditional deep learning regression models for this task. We address this issue by proposing a novel PointNet-style architecture with self-attention to efficiently estimate 6-DoF poses from 360° LiDAR input frames.Extensive experiments on recently released challenging Oxford Radar RobotCar dataset and real-world robot experiments demonstrate that the proposedmethod can achieve accurate relocalization performance.

Rogue Waves in (2+1)-Dimensional Three-Wave Resonant Interactions

Rogue waves in (2+1)-dimensional three-wave resonant interactions are studied. General rogue waves arising from a constant background, from a lump-soliton background and from a dark-soliton background have been derived, and their dynamics illustrated. For rogue waves arising from a constant background, fundamental rogue waves are line-shaped, and multi-rogue waves exhibit multiple intersecting lines. Higher-order rogue waves could also be line-shaped, but they exhibit multiple parallel lines. For rogue waves arising from a lump-soliton background, they could exhibit distinctive patterns due to their interaction with the lump soliton. For rogue waves arising from a dark-soliton background, their intensity pattern could feature half-line shapes or lump shapes, which are very novel.

Precise Learning of Source Code Contextual Semantics via Hierarchical Dependence Structure and Graph Attention Networks

Deep learning is being used extensively in a variety of software engineering tasks, e.g., program classification and defect prediction. Although the technique eliminates the required process of feature engineering, the construction of source code model significantly affects the performance on those tasks. Most recent works was mainly focused on complementing AST-based source code models by introducing contextual dependencies extracted from CFG. However, all of them pay little attention to the representation of basic blocks, which are the basis of contextual dependencies. In this paper, we integrated AST and CFG and proposed a novel source code model embedded with hierarchical dependencies. Based on that, we also designed a neural network that depends on the graph attention mechanism.Specifically, we introduced the syntactic structural of the basic block, i.e., its corresponding AST, in source code model to provide sufficient information and fill the gap. We have evaluated this model on three practical software engineering tasks and compared it with other state-of-the-art methods. The results show that our model can significantly improve the performance. For example, compared to the best performing baseline, our model reduces the scale of parameters by 50\% and achieves 4\% improvement on accuracy on program classification task.

Anomalous Higgs oscillations mediated by Berry curvature and quantum metric

Higgs spectroscopy, the study of Higgs bosons of a superconductor, is an emerging field in studying superconductivity. Here we show that the Berry curvature and the quantum metric of bands play a central role in the Higgs mode generation. They allow the detection of Higgs bosons even when the conventional contribution from the band curvature vanishes. Furthermore, we show that the Higgs mode can couple to the external electromagnetic field linearly when mediated by the Berry connection. As a result, we predict the existence of a second harmonic generation, in addition to the well-known third harmonic generation. We elucidate our theory further by considering a flat band superconductor realized by the Harper-Hubbard model and show that the geometric Higgs mode is lower bounded by the band Chern number. We demonstrate in twisted bilayer graphene the existence of the geometrically induced Higgs modes when superconductivity is realized in the nearly flat band at the magic angle.

Speech recognition for air traffic control via feature learning and end-to-end training

In this work, we propose a new automatic speech recognition (ASR) system based on feature learning and an end-to-end training procedure for air traffic control (ATC) systems. The proposed model integrates the feature learning block, recurrent neural network (RNN), and connectionist temporal classification loss to build an end-to-end ASR model. Facing the complex environments of ATC speech, instead of the handcrafted features, a learning block is designed to extract informative features from raw waveforms for acoustic modeling. Both the SincNet and 1D convolution blocks are applied to process the raw waveforms, whose outputs are concatenated to the RNN layers for the temporal modeling. Thanks to the ability to learn representations from raw waveforms, the proposed model can be optimized in a complete end-to-end manner, i.e., from waveform to text. Finally, the multilingual issue in the ATC domain is also considered to achieve the ASR task by constructing a combined vocabulary of Chinese characters and English letters. The proposed approach is validated on a multilingual real-world corpus (ATCSpeech), and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other baselines, achieving a 6.9\% character error rate.

OctField: Hierarchical Implicit Functions for 3D Modeling

Recent advances in localized implicit functions have enabled neural implicit representation to be scalable to large scenes. However, the regular subdivision of 3D space employed by these approaches fails to take into account the sparsity of the surface occupancy and the varying granularities of geometric details. As a result, its memory footprint grows cubically with the input volume, leading to a prohibitive computational cost even at a moderately dense decomposition. In this work, we present a learnable hierarchical implicit representation for 3D surfaces, coded OctField, that allows high-precision encoding of intricate surfaces with low memory and computational budget. The key to our approach is an adaptive decomposition of 3D scenes that only distributes local implicit functions around the surface of interest. We achieve this goal by introducing a hierarchical octree structure to adaptively subdivide the 3D space according to the surface occupancy and the richness of part geometry. As octree is discrete and non-differentiable, we further propose a novel hierarchical network that models the subdivision of octree cells as a probabilistic process and recursively encodes and decodes both octree structure and surface geometry in a differentiable manner. We demonstrate the value of OctField for a range of shape modeling and reconstruction tasks, showing superiority over alternative approaches.

How to Leverage Multimodal EHR Data for Better Medical Predictions?

Healthcare is becoming a more and more important research topic recently. With the growing data in the healthcare domain, it offers a great opportunity for deep learning to improve the quality of medical service. However, the complexity of electronic health records (EHR) data is a challenge for the application of deep learning. Specifically, the data produced in the hospital admissions are monitored by the EHR system, which includes structured data like daily body temperature, and unstructured data like free text and laboratory measurements. Although there are some preprocessing frameworks proposed for specific EHR data, the clinical notes that contain significant clinical value are beyond the realm of their consideration. Besides, whether these different data from various views are all beneficial to the medical tasks and how to best utilize these data remain unclear. Therefore, in this paper, we first extract the accompanying clinical notes from EHR and propose a method to integrate these data, we also comprehensively study the different models and the data leverage methods for better medical task prediction. The results on two medical prediction tasks show that our fused model with different data outperforms the state-of-the-art method that without clinical notes, which illustrates the importance of our fusion method and the value of clinical note features. Exact Landau Level Description of Geometry and Interaction in a Flatband

Flatbands appear in many condensed matter systems, such as in high magnetic fields, correlated materials and moire heterostructures. They are characterized by intrinsic geometric properties such as the Berry curvature and Fubini-Study metric. In general the band geometry is nonuniform in momentum space, making its influence on electron-electron interactions a difficult problem to understand analytically. In this work, we study this problem in a topological flatband of Chern number C=1 with the ideal properties that the Berry curvature is positive definite and fluctuates in sync with Fubini-Study metric. We derive an exact correspondence between such ideal flatbands and Landau levels by showing how the band geometry fluctuation in ideal flatbands gives raise to a new type of interaction in Landau levels which depends on the center-of-mass of two particles. We characterize such interaction by generalizing the usual Haldane pseudopotentials. This mapping gives exact zero-energy ground states for short-ranged repulsive generalized pseudopotentials in flatbands, in analogy to fractional quantum Hall systems. Driving the center-of-mass interactions beyond the repulsive regime leads to a dramatic reconstruction of the ground states towards gapless phases. The generalized pseudopotential could be a useful basis for future numerical studies.

SHECS: A Local Smart Hands-free Elderly Care Support System on Smart AR Glasses with AI Technology

Some elderly care homes attempt to remedy the shortage of skilled caregivers and provide long-term care for the elderly residents, by enhancing the management of the care support system with the aid of smart devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Since mobile phones and tablets lack the flexibility required for laborious elderly care work, smart AR glasses have already been considered. Although lightweight smart AR devices with a transparent display are more convenient and responsive in an elderly care workplace, fetching data from the server through the Internet results in network congestion not to mention the limited display area. To devise portable smart AR devices that operate smoothly, we first present a no keep alive Internet required smart hands-free elderly care support system that employs smart glasses with facial recognition and text-to-speech synthesis technologies. Our support system utilizes automatic lightweight facial recognition to identify residents, and information about each resident in question can be obtained hands free link with a local database. Moreover, a resident information can be displayed on just a portion of the AR smart glasses on the spot. Due to the limited size of the display area, it cannot show all the necessary information. We exploit synthesized voices in the system to read out the elderly care related information. By using the support system, caregivers can gain an understanding of each resident condition immediately, instead of having to devote considerable time in advance in obtaining the complete information of all elderly residents. Our lightweight facial recognition model achieved high accuracy with fewer model parameters than current state-of-the-art methods. The validation rate of our facial recognition system was 99.3% or higher with the false accept rate of 0.001, and caregivers rated the acceptability at 3.6 (5 levels) or higher.

Formation of a Solar Filament by Magnetic Reconnection and Associated Chromospheric Evaporation and Subsequent Coronal Condensation

We present the first observation of a solar filament formed by magnetic reconnection and associated chromospheric evaporation and subsequent coronal condensation. Driven by shearing motion during flux emergence, a sequential tether-cutting reconnection processes occurred and resulted in an M1.3 confined flare accompany with the formation of a sigmoid structure. It is found that the flare had a conjugate compact footpoint brightenings, which correspond to the footpoints of the sigmoid. Furthermore, observational evidence of explosive evaporation is well diagnosed at the conjugate footpoint brightenings in the impulsive phase of the flare. After the flare, continuous cool condensations formed at about the middle section of the sigmoid and then moved in opposite directions along the sigmoid, eventually leading to the formation of the filament. These observations suggest that magnetic reconnection not only can form the magnetic field structure of the filament, but also heat their chromospheric footpoints during their formation and drive chromospheric evaporation. As a result, the heated chromospheric plasma may be evaporated into the magnetic field structure of the filament, where the accumulated hot plasma might suffer from thermal instability or thermal non-equilibrium, causing catastrophic cooling and coronal condensation to form the cool dense material of the filament. This observation lends strong support to the evaporative-condensation model and highlights the crucial role of magnetic reconnection in forming both the magnetic field structure and the cool dense material of filaments.

Pattern transformation in higher-order lumps of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili I equation

Pattern formation in higher-order lumps of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili I equation at large time is analytically studied. For a broad class of these higher-order lumps, we show that two types of solution patterns appear at large time. The first type of patterns comprise fundamental lumps arranged in triangular shapes, which are described analytically by root structures of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials. As time evolves from large negative to large positive, this triangular pattern reverses itself along the x-direction. The second type of patterns comprise fundamental lumps arranged in non-triangular shapes in the outer region, which are described analytically by nonzero-root structures of the Wronskian-Hermit polynomials, together with possible fundamental lumps arranged in triangular shapes in the inner region, which are described analytically by root structures of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomials. When time evolves from large negative to large positive, the non-triangular pattern in the outer region switches its x and y directions, while the triangular pattern in the inner region, if it arises, reverses its direction along the x-axis. Our predicted patterns at large time are compared to true solutions, and excellent agreement is observed.

Analytic exposition of the graviton modes in fractional quantum Hall effects and its physical implications

Neutral excitations in a fractional quantum Hall droplet define the incompressibility gap of the topological phase. In this work, we derived a set of analytical results for the energy gap of the graviton modes with two-body and three-body Hamiltonians in both the long-wavelength and thermodynamic limit. These allow us to construct model Hamiltonians for the graviton modes in different FQH phases, and to elucidate a hierarchical structure of conformal Hilbert spaces (nullspaces of model Hamiltonians) with respect to the graviton modes and their corresponding ground states. Using the analytical tools developed, we perform numerical analysis with a particular focus on the Laughlin $ν= 1/5$ and the Gaffnian $ν= 2/5$ phases. Our calculation shows that for gapped phases, low-lying neutral excitations can undergo a "phase transition" even when the ground state is invariant. We discuss the compressibility of the Gaffnian phase, the possibility of multiple graviton modes, and the transition from the graviton modes to the "hollow-core" modes, as well as their experimental consequences.

Statistical interactions and boson-anyon duality in fractional quantum Hall fluids

We present an exact scheme of bosonization for anyons (including fermions) in the two-dimensional manifold of the quantum Hall fluid. This gives every fractional quantum Hall phase of the electrons one or more dual bosonic descriptions. For interacting electrons, the statistical transmutation from anyons to bosons allows us to explicitly derive the microscopic statistical interaction between the anyons, in the form of the effective two-body and few-body interactions. This also leads to a number of unexpected topological phases of the single component bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect that may be experimentally accessible. Numerical analysis of the energy spectrum and ground state entanglement properties are carried out for simple examples.

A Robust and Efficient Multi-Scale Seasonal-Trend Decomposition

Many real-world time series exhibit multiple seasonality with different lengths. The removal of seasonal components is crucial in numerous applications of time series, including forecasting and anomaly detection. However, many seasonal-trend decomposition algorithms suffer from high computational cost and require a large amount of data when multiple seasonal components exist, especially when the periodic length is long. In this paper, we propose a general and efficient multi-scale seasonal-trend decomposition algorithm for time series with multiple seasonality. We first down-sample the original time series onto a lower resolution, and then convert it to a time series with single seasonality. Thus, existing seasonal-trend decomposition algorithms can be applied directly to obtain the rough estimates of trend and the seasonal component corresponding to the longer periodic length. By considering the relationship between different resolutions, we formulate the recovery of different components on the high resolution as an optimization problem, which is solved efficiently by our alternative direction multiplier method (ADMM) based algorithm. Our experimental results demonstrate the accurate decomposition results with significantly improved efficiency.

Spectrum Learning-Aided Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for 'Green' 6G Networks

In the sixth-generation (6G) era, emerging large-scale computing based applications (for example processing enormous amounts of images in real-time in autonomous driving) tend to lead to excessive energy consumption for the end users, whose devices are usually energy-constrained. In this context, energy-efficiency becomes a critical challenge to be solved for harnessing these promising applications to realize 'green' 6G networks. As a remedy, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have been proposed for improving the energy efficiency by beneficially reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In conventional RIS solutions, however, the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) sometimes may even become degraded. This is because the signals impinging upon an RIS are typically contaminated by interfering signals which are usually dynamic and unknown. To address this issue, `learning' the properties of the surrounding spectral environment is a promising solution, motivating the convergence of artificial intelligence and spectrum sensing, termed here as spectrum learning (SL). Inspired by this, we develop an SL-aided RIS framework for intelligently exploiting the inherent characteristics of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum for green 6G networks. Given the proposed framework, the RIS controller becomes capable of intelligently `{think-and-decide}' whether to reflect or not the incident signals. Therefore, the received SINR can be improved by dynamically configuring the binary ON-OFF status of the RIS elements. The energy-efficiency benefits attained are validated with the aid of a specific case study. Finally, we conclude with a list of promising future research directions.
