Improving Seq2Seq Grammatical Error Correction via Decoding Interventions

The sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) approach has recently been widely used in grammatical error correction (GEC) and shows promising performance. However, the Seq2Seq GEC approach still suffers from two issues. First, a Seq2Seq GEC model can only be trained on parallel data, which, in GEC task, is often noisy and limited in quantity. Second, the decoder of a Seq2Seq GEC model lacks an explicit awareness of the correctness of the token being generated. In this paper, we propose a unified decoding intervention framework that employs an external critic to assess the appropriateness of the token to be generated incrementally, and then dynamically influence the choice of the next token. We discover and investigate two types of critics: a pre-trained left-to-right language model critic and an incremental target-side grammatical error detector critic. Through extensive experiments on English and Chinese datasets, our framework consistently outperforms strong baselines and achieves results competitive with state-of-the-art methods.

Maser Investigation toward Off-Plane Stars (MIOPS): detection of SiO masers in the Galactic thick disk and halo

Studying stars that are located off the Galactic plane is important for understanding the formation history of the Milky Way. We searched for SiO masers toward off-plane O-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars from the catalog presented by Mauron et al. (2019) in order to shed light on the origin of these objects. A total of 102 stars were observed in the SiO $J$=1-0, $v=1$ and 2 transitions with the Effelsberg-100 m and Tianma-65 m telescopes. SiO masers were discovered in eight stars, all first detections. The measured maser velocities allow the first estimates of the host AGB stars' radial velocities. We find that the radial velocities of three stars (namely G068.881-24.615, G070.384-24.886, and G084.453-21.863) significantly deviate from the values expected from Galactic circular motion. The updated distances and 3D motions indicate that G068.881$-$24.615 is likely located in the Galactic halo, while G160.648-08.846 is probably located in the Galactic thin disk, and the other six stars are probably part of the Galactic thick disk.

Reconstruction of inhomogeneous media by an iteration algorithm with a learned projector

This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of reconstructing an inhomogeneous medium from the acoustic far-field data at a fixed frequency in two dimensions. This inverse problem is severely ill-posed (and also strongly nonlinear), and certain regularization strategy is thus needed. However, it is difficult to select an appropriate regularization strategy which should enforce some a priori information of the unknown scatterer. To address this issue, we plan to use a deep learning approach to learn some a priori information of the unknown scatterer from certain ground truth data, which is then combined with a traditional iteration method to solve the inverse problem. Specifically, we propose a deep learning-based iterative reconstruction algorithm for the inverse problem, based on a repeated application of a deep neural network and the iteratively regularized Gauss-Newton method (IRGNM). Our deep neural network (called the learned projector in this paper) mainly focuses on learning the a priori information of the shape of the unknown contrast with a normalization technique in the training process and is trained to act like a projector which is helpful for projecting the solution into some feasible region. Extensive numerical experiments show that our reconstruction algorithm provides good reconstruction results even for the high contrast case and has a satisfactory generalization ability.

AONN-2: An adjoint-oriented neural network method for PDE-constrained shape optimization

Shape optimization has been playing an important role in a large variety of engineering applications. Existing shape optimization methods are generally mesh-dependent and therefore encounter challenges due to mesh deformation. To overcome this limitation, we present a new adjoint-oriented neural network method, AONN-2, for PDE-constrained shape optimization problems. This method extends the capabilities of the original AONN method [1], which is developed for efficiently solving parametric optimal control problems. AONN-2 inherits the direct-adjoint looping (DAL) framework for computing the extremum of an objective functional and the neural network methods for solving complicated PDEs from AONN. Furthermore, AONN-2 expands the application scope to shape optimization by taking advantage of the shape derivatives to optimize the shape represented by discrete boundary points. AONN-2 is a fully mesh-free shape optimization approach, naturally sidestepping issues related to mesh deformation, with no need for maintaining mesh quality and additional mesh corrections. A series of experimental results are presented, highlighting the flexibility, robustness, and accuracy of AONN-2.

Rethinking Cross-Domain Pedestrian Detection: A Background-Focused Distribution Alignment Framework for Instance-Free One-Stage Detectors

Cross-domain pedestrian detection aims to generalize pedestrian detectors from one label-rich domain to another label-scarce domain, which is crucial for various real-world applications. Most recent works focus on domain alignment to train domain-adaptive detectors either at the instance level or image level. From a practical point of view, one-stage detectors are faster. Therefore, we concentrate on designing a cross-domain algorithm for rapid one-stage detectors that lacks instance-level proposals and can only perform image-level feature alignment. However, pure image-level feature alignment causes the foreground-background misalignment issue to arise, i.e., the foreground features in the source domain image are falsely aligned with background features in the target domain image. To address this issue, we systematically analyze the importance of foreground and background in image-level cross-domain alignment, and learn that background plays a more critical role in image-level cross-domain alignment. Therefore, we focus on cross-domain background feature alignment while minimizing the influence of foreground features on the cross-domain alignment stage. This paper proposes a novel framework, namely, background-focused distribution alignment (BFDA), to train domain adaptive onestage pedestrian detectors. Specifically, BFDA first decouples the background features from the whole image feature maps and then aligns them via a novel long-short-range discriminator.

A fourth-order kernel for improving numerical accuracy and stability in Eulerian and total Lagrangian SPH

The error of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) using kernel for particle-based approximation mainly comes from smoothing and integration errors. The choice of kernels has a significant impact on the numerical accuracy, stability and computational efficiency. At present, the most popular kernels such as B-spline, truncated Gaussian (for compact support), Wendland kernels have 2nd-order smoothing error and Wendland kernel becomes mainstream in SPH community as its stability and accuracy. Due to the fact that the particle distribution after relaxation can achieve fast convergence of integration error respected to support radius, it is logical to choose kernels with higher-order smoothing error to improve the numerical accuracy. In this paper, the error of 4th-order Laguerre-Wendland kernel proposed by Litvinov et al. \cite{litvinov2015towards} is revisited and another 4th-order truncated Laguerre-Gauss kernel is further analyzed and considered to replace the widely used Wendland kernel. The proposed kernel has following three properties: One is that it avoids the pair-instability problem during the relaxation process, unlike the original truncated Gaussian kernel, and achieves much less relaxation residue than Wendland and Laguerre-Wendland kernels; One is the truncated compact support size is the same as the non-truncated compact support of Wendland kernel, which leads to both kernels' computational efficiency at the same level; Another is that the truncation error of this kernel is much less than that of Wendland kernel. Furthermore, a comprehensive set of $2D$ and $3D$ benchmark cases on Eulerian SPH for fluid dynamics and total Lagrangian SPH for solid dynamics validate the considerably improved numerical accuracy by using truncated Laguerre-Gauss kernel without introducing extra computational effort.

FPTQ: Fine-grained Post-Training Quantization for Large Language Models

In the era of large-scale language models, the substantial parameter size poses significant challenges for deployment. Being a prevalent compression technique, quantization has emerged as the mainstream practice to tackle this issue, which is mainly centered on two recipes W8A8 and W4A16 (i.e. weights and activations in such bit widths). In this study, we propose a novel W4A8 post-training quantization method for the available open-sourced LLMs, which combines the advantages of both two recipes. Therefore, we can leverage the benefit in the I/O utilization of 4-bit weight quantization and the acceleration due to 8-bit matrix computation. Nevertheless, the W4A8 faces notorious performance degradation. As a remedy, we involve layerwise activation quantization strategies which feature a novel logarithmic equalization for most intractable layers, and we combine them with fine-grained weight quantization. Without whistles and bells, we eliminate the necessity for further fine-tuning and obtain the state-of-the-art W4A8 quantized performance on BLOOM, LLaMA, and LLaMA-2 on standard benchmarks. We confirm that the W4A8 quantization is achievable for the deployment of large language models, fostering their wide-spreading real-world applications.

ControlCom: Controllable Image Composition using Diffusion Model

Image composition targets at synthesizing a realistic composite image from a pair of foreground and background images. Recently, generative composition methods are built on large pretrained diffusion models to generate composite images, considering their great potential in image generation. However, they suffer from lack of controllability on foreground attributes and poor preservation of foreground identity. To address these challenges, we propose a controllable image composition method that unifies four tasks in one diffusion model: image blending, image harmonization, view synthesis, and generative composition. Meanwhile, we design a self-supervised training framework coupled with a tailored pipeline of training data preparation. Moreover, we propose a local enhancement module to enhance the foreground details in the diffusion model, improving the foreground fidelity of composite images. The proposed method is evaluated on both public benchmark and real-world data, which demonstrates that our method can generate more faithful and controllable composite images than existing approaches. The code and model will be available at https://github.com/bcmi/ControlCom-Image-Composition.

Matching with multiple criteria and its application to health disparities research

Matching is a popular nonparametric covariate adjustment strategy in empirical health services research. Matching helps construct two groups comparable in many baseline covariates but different in some key aspects under investigation. In health disparities research, it is desirable to understand the contributions of various modifiable factors, like income and insurance type, to the observed disparity in access to health services between different groups. To single out the contributions from the factors of interest, we propose a statistical matching methodology that constructs nested matched comparison groups from, for instance, White men, that resemble the target group, for instance, black men, in some selected covariates while remaining identical to the white men population before matching in the remaining covariates. Using the proposed method, we investigated the disparity gaps between white men and black men in the US in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening based on the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BFRSS) database. We found a widening PSA screening rate as the white matched comparison group increasingly resembles the black men group and quantified the contribution of modifiable factors like socioeconomic status. Finally, we provide code that replicates the case study and a tutorial that enables users to design customized matched comparison groups satisfying multiple criteria.

Foreground Object Search by Distilling Composite Image Feature

Foreground object search (FOS) aims to find compatible foreground objects for a given background image, producing realistic composite image. We observe that competitive retrieval performance could be achieved by using a discriminator to predict the compatibility of composite image, but this approach has unaffordable time cost. To this end, we propose a novel FOS method via distilling composite feature (DiscoFOS). Specifically, the abovementioned discriminator serves as teacher network. The student network employs two encoders to extract foreground feature and background feature. Their interaction output is enforced to match the composite image feature from the teacher network. Additionally, previous works did not release their datasets, so we contribute two datasets for FOS task: S-FOSD dataset with synthetic composite images and R-FOSD dataset with real composite images. Extensive experiments on our two datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over previous approaches. The dataset and code are available at https://github.com/bcmi/Foreground-Object-Search-Dataset-FOSD.

A high-performance GPU implementation of the electron-phonon Wannier interpolation and the related transport properties

The electron-phonon Wannier interpolation (EPWI) method is an efficient way to compute the properties of electron-phonon interactions (EPIs) accurately. This study presents a GPU-accelerated implementation of the EPWI method for computing transport properties, followed by a performance analysis. The implementation is tested on common systems such as aluminum and silicon. The results show complete consistency with those obtained through CPU computations. The proposed algorithm has the capability of computing the conductivity of aluminum in 20 minutes on a single NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU, adopting a $200^3$ electron and phonon sampling grid. This speed is 173 times higher than the CPU-based algorithm, running on two nodes of the Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 CPU. Such impressive acceleration is achieved by carefully designing the algorithm to exploit the GPU's specific features. Furthermore, this methodology establishes a generic foundation for EPWI algorithms, which can be applied to other EPI-related properties.

Multi-view Vision-Prompt Fusion Network: Can 2D Pre-trained Model Boost 3D Point Cloud Data-scarce Learning?

Point cloud based 3D deep model has wide applications in many applications such as autonomous driving, house robot, and so on. Inspired by the recent prompt learning in natural language processing, this work proposes a novel Multi-view Vision-Prompt Fusion Network (MvNet) for few-shot 3D point cloud classification. MvNet investigates the possibility of leveraging the off-the-shelf 2D pre-trained models to achieve the few-shot classification, which can alleviate the over-dependence issue of the existing baseline models towards the large-scale annotated 3D point cloud data. Specifically, MvNet first encodes a 3D point cloud into multi-view image features for a number of different views. Then, a novel multi-view prompt fusion module is developed to effectively fuse information from different views to bridge the gap between 3D point cloud data and 2D pre-trained models. A set of 2D image prompts can then be derived to better describe the suitable prior knowledge for a large-scale pre-trained image model for few-shot 3D point cloud classification. Extensive experiments on ModelNet, ScanObjectNN, and ShapeNet datasets demonstrate that MvNet achieves new state-of-the-art performance for 3D few-shot point cloud image classification. The source code of this work will be available soon.

ROME: Robustifying Memory-Efficient NAS via Topology Disentanglement and Gradient Accumulation

Albeit being a prevalent architecture searching approach, differentiable architecture search (DARTS) is largely hindered by its substantial memory cost since the entire supernet resides in the memory. This is where the single-path DARTS comes in, which only chooses a single-path submodel at each step. While being memory-friendly, it also comes with low computational costs. Nonetheless, we discover a critical issue of single-path DARTS that has not been primarily noticed. Namely, it also suffers from severe performance collapse since too many parameter-free operations like skip connections are derived, just like DARTS does. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm called RObustifying Memory-Efficient NAS (ROME) to give a cure. First, we disentangle the topology search from the operation search to make searching and evaluation consistent. We then adopt Gumbel-Top2 reparameterization and gradient accumulation to robustify the unwieldy bi-level optimization. We verify ROME extensively across 15 benchmarks to demonstrate its effectiveness and robustness.

ZRIGF: An Innovative Multimodal Framework for Zero-Resource Image-Grounded Dialogue Generation

Image-grounded dialogue systems benefit greatly from integrating visual information, resulting in high-quality response generation. However, current models struggle to effectively utilize such information in zero-resource scenarios, mainly due to the disparity between image and text modalities. To overcome this challenge, we propose an innovative multimodal framework, called ZRIGF, which assimilates image-grounded information for dialogue generation in zero-resource situations. ZRIGF implements a two-stage learning strategy, comprising contrastive pre-training and generative pre-training. Contrastive pre-training includes a text-image matching module that maps images and texts into a unified encoded vector space, along with a text-assisted masked image modeling module that preserves pre-training visual features and fosters further multimodal feature alignment. Generative pre-training employs a multimodal fusion module and an information transfer module to produce insightful responses based on harmonized multimodal representations. Comprehensive experiments conducted on both text-based and image-grounded dialogue datasets demonstrate ZRIGF's efficacy in generating contextually pertinent and informative responses. Furthermore, we adopt a fully zero-resource scenario in the image-grounded dialogue dataset to demonstrate our framework's robust generalization capabilities in novel domains. The code is available at https://github.com/zhangbo-nlp/ZRIGF.

SUG: Single-dataset Unified Generalization for 3D Point Cloud Classification

Although Domain Generalization (DG) problem has been fast-growing in the 2D image tasks, its exploration on 3D point cloud data is still insufficient and challenged by more complex and uncertain cross-domain variances with uneven inter-class modality distribution. In this paper, different from previous 2D DG works, we focus on the 3D DG problem and propose a Single-dataset Unified Generalization (SUG) framework that only leverages a single source dataset to alleviate the unforeseen domain differences faced by a well-trained source model. Specifically, we first design a Multi-grained Sub-domain Alignment (MSA) method, which can constrain the learned representations to be domain-agnostic and discriminative, by performing a multi-grained feature alignment process between the splitted sub-domains from the single source dataset. Then, a Sample-level Domain-aware Attention (SDA) strategy is presented, which can selectively enhance easy-to-adapt samples from different sub-domains according to the sample-level inter-domain distance to avoid the negative transfer. Experiments demonstrate that our SUG can boost the generalization ability for unseen target domains, even outperforming the existing unsupervised domain adaptation methods that have to access extensive target domain data. Our code is available at https://github.com/SiyuanHuang95/SUG.

Manipulation of $γ$ ray polarization in Compton scattering

High-brilliance high-polarization $γ$ rays based on Compton scattering are of great significance in broad areas, such as nuclear, high-energy, astro-physics, etc. However, the transfer mechanism of spin angular momentum in the transition from linear, through weakly into strongly nonlinear processes is still unclear, which severely limits the simultaneous control of brilliance and polarization of high-energy $γ$ rays. In this work, we investigate the manipulation mechanism of high-quality polarized $γ$ rays in Compton scattering of the ultrarelativistic electron beam colliding with an intense laser pulse. We find that the contradiction lies in the simultaneous achievement of high-brilliance and high-polarization of $γ$ rays by increasing laser intensity, since the polarization is predominately contributed by the electron (laser photon) spin via multi-photon (single-photon) absorption channel. Moreover, we confirm that the signature of $γ$-ray polarization can be applied for observing the nonlinear effects (multi-photon absorption) of Compton scattering with moderate-intensity laser facilities.

MixPath: A Unified Approach for One-shot Neural Architecture Search

Blending multiple convolutional kernels is proved advantageous in neural architecture design. However, current two-stage neural architecture search methods are mainly limited to single-path search spaces. How to efficiently search models of multi-path structures remains a difficult problem. In this paper, we are motivated to train a one-shot multi-path supernet to accurately evaluate the candidate architectures. Specifically, we discover that in the studied search spaces, feature vectors summed from multiple paths are nearly multiples of those from a single path. Such disparity perturbs the supernet training and its ranking ability. Therefore, we propose a novel mechanism called Shadow Batch Normalization (SBN) to regularize the disparate feature statistics. Extensive experiments prove that SBNs are capable of stabilizing the optimization and improving ranking performance. We call our unified multi-path one-shot approach as MixPath, which generates a series of models that achieve state-of-the-art results on ImageNet.

ALMA and VLBA views on the outflow associated with an O-type protostar in G26.50+0.28

Protostellar jets and outflows are essential ingredients of the star formation process. A better understanding of this phenomenon is important in its own right as well as for many fundamental aspects of star formation. Jets and outflows associated with O-type protostars are rarely studied with observations reaching the close vicinity of the protostars. In this work, we report high-resolution ALMA and VLBA observations to reveal a clear and consistent picture of an outflow associated with an O-type protostar candidate in the G26.50+0.28 region. These observations reveal, for the first time, a collimated jet located in the middle of the outflow cavity. The jet is found to be perpendicular to an elongated disk/toroid and its velocity gradient. The collimated jet appears to show a small amplitude ($α$$\approx$0$\,.\!\!^{\circ}$06) counterclockwise precession, when looking along the blueshifted jet axis from the strongest continuum source MM1, with a precession length of 0.22 pc. The inclination of the jet is likely to be very low ($\approx$8$^{\circ}$), which makes it a promising target to study its transverse morphologies and kinematics. However, no clear evidence of jet rotation is found in the ALMA and VLBA observations. The three-dimensional velocities of the water maser spots appear to show the same absolute speed with respect to different opening angles, suggesting the jet winds may be launched in a relatively small region. This favors the X-wind model, that is, jets are launched in a small area near the inner disk edge.
