Improved Selection Criteria for HII Regions, based on IRAS Sources

We present new criteria for selecting HII regions from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) Point Source catalogue (PSC), based on an HII region catalogue derived manually from the all-sky Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The criteria are used to augment the number of HII region candidates in the Milky Way. The criteria are defined by the linear decision boundary of two samples: IRAS point sources associated with known HII regions, which serve as the HII region sample, and IRAS point sources at high Galactic latitudes, which serve as the non-HII region sample. A machine learning classifier, specifically a support vector machine (SVM), is used to determine the decision boundary. We investigate all combinations of four IRAS bands and suggest that the optimal criterion is log(F$_{\rm 60}$/F$_{\rm 12}$)$\ge$(-0.19$\times$log(F$_{\rm 100}$/F$_{\rm 25}$)+ 1.52), with detections at 60 and 100 micron. This selects 3041 HII region candidates from the IRAS PSC. We find that IRAS HII region candidates show evidence of evolution on the two-colour diagram. Merging the WISE HII catalogue with IRAS HII region candidates, we estimate a lower limit of approximately 10200 for the number of HII regions in the Milky Way.

The odd-isotope fractions of Barium in the strongly r-process enhanced (r-II) stars

We determined the \fodd\ values, $0.46\pm0.08$, $0.51\pm0.09$, $0.50\pm0.13$, $0.48\pm0.12$, which correspond to the r-contribution 100\% for four r-II stars, \cs, \hen, \hes\, and \het, respectively. Our results suggest that almost all of the heavy elements (in the range from Ba to Pb) in r-II stars have a common origin, that is, from a single r-process (the main r-process). We found that the \fodd\ has a intrinsic nature, and should keep constant value of about 0.46 in the main r-process yields, which is responsible for the heavy element enhancement of r-II stars and of our Galaxy chemical enhancement. In addition, except the abundance ratio [Ba/Eu] the \fodd\ is also an important indicator, which can be used to study the relative contributions of the r- and s-process during the chemical evolution history of the Milky Way and the enhancement mechanism in stars with peculiar abundance of heavy elements.

Optimization-based Calibration of Simulation Input Models

Studies on simulation input uncertainty often built on the availability of input data. In this paper, we investigate an inverse problem where, given only the availability of output data, we nonparametrically calibrate the input models and other related performance measures of interest. We propose an optimization-based framework to compute statistically valid bounds on input quantities. The framework utilizes constraints that connect the statistical information of the real-world outputs with the input-output relation via a simulable map. We analyze the statistical guarantees of this approach from the view of data-driven robust optimization, and show how the guarantees relate to the function complexity of the constraints arising in our framework. We investigate an iterative procedure based on a stochastic quadratic penalty method to approximately solve the resulting optimization. We conduct numerical experiments to demonstrate our performance in bounding the input models and related quantities.

Directional Modulation Design Based on Crossed-Dipole Arrays for Two Signals With Orthogonal Polarisations

Directional modulation (DM) is a physical layer security technique based on antenna arrays and so far the polarisation information has not been considered in its designs. To increase the channel capacity, we consider exploiting the polarisation information and send two different signals simultaneously at the same direction, same frequency, but with different polarisations. These two signals can also be considered as one composite signal using the four dimensional (4-D) modulation scheme across the two polarisation diversity channels. In this paper, based on cross-dipole arrays, we formulate the design to find a set of common weight coefficients to achieve directional modulation for such a composite signal and examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Managing Appointment Booking under Customer Choices

Motivated by the increasing use of online appointment booking platforms, we study how to offer appointment slots to customers in order to maximize the total number of slots booked. We develop two models, non-sequential offering and sequential offering, to capture different types of interactions between customers and the scheduling system. In these two models, the scheduler offers either a single set of appointment slots for the arriving customer to choose from, or multiple sets in sequence, respectively. For the non-sequential model, we identify a static randomized policy which is asymptotically optimal when the system demand and capacity increase simultaneously, and we further show that offering all available slots at all times has a constant factor of 2 performance guarantee. For the sequential model, we derive a closed-form optimal policy for a large class of instances and develop a simple, effective heuristic for those instances without an explicit optimal policy. By comparing these two models, our study generates useful operational insights for improving the current appointment booking processes. In particular, our analysis reveals an interesting equivalence between the sequential offering model and the non-sequential offering model with perfect customer preference information. This equivalence allows us to apply sequential offering in a wide range of interactive scheduling contexts. Our extensive numerical study shows that sequential offering can significantly improve the slot fill rate (6-8% on average and up to 18% in our testing cases) compared to non-sequential offering.

Multi-photon Effects in Single Nonlinear Compton Scattering and Single Nonlinear Breit-Wheeler Process in Ultra Intense Fields

Nonlinear Compton scattering (NCS) and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (NBW) process are strongly multi-photon and highly nonlinear processes. In ultra intense lasers (normalized field amplitude $a_0 \gg 1$), radiation formation length is much shorter than a period and single NCS/NBW cannot be described as scatterings of electrons dressing plane waves with $γ$ photons for what they feel is a local constant crossed field. However, present theories in constant crossed fields are hard to give some important quantum features due to divergence problems, such as number of laser photons involved, instantaneous angular distribution and detailed spectrum. As an alternative, present understanding of single NCS/NBW in ultra intense lasers includes several classical and semi-quantum ideas such as forward emission, recoil reaction and spectrum cutoff. We investigated multi-photon effects on NCS/NBW in ultra intense lasers by extracting the number of laser photons involved in a single process in ultra intense lasers from formulae of existing theories. New features of single NCS in ultra intense lasers including fixed emission angle to instantaneous electron momentum, instantaneous deflection of electron, and disappearance of spectrum cutoff are deduced. Similar features of single NBW in ultra intense lasers including non-vanishing emission angles to instantaneous $γ$ photon momentum, disappearance of spectrum cutoff and appearance of spectrum lower limit are also obtained. Simulations show that corresponding signals of multi-photon effects are significant on $10$PW scale and stronger lasers.

Triple Generative Adversarial Nets

Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) have shown promise in image generation and semi-supervised learning (SSL). However, existing GANs in SSL have two problems: (1) the generator and the discriminator (i.e. the classifier) may not be optimal at the same time; and (2) the generator cannot control the semantics of the generated samples. The problems essentially arise from the two-player formulation, where a single discriminator shares incompatible roles of identifying fake samples and predicting labels and it only estimates the data without considering the labels. To address the problems, we present triple generative adversarial net (Triple-GAN), which consists of three players---a generator, a discriminator and a classifier. The generator and the classifier characterize the conditional distributions between images and labels, and the discriminator solely focuses on identifying fake image-label pairs. We design compatible utilities to ensure that the distributions characterized by the classifier and the generator both converge to the data distribution. Our results on various datasets demonstrate that Triple-GAN as a unified model can simultaneously (1) achieve the state-of-the-art classification results among deep generative models, and (2) disentangle the classes and styles of the input and transfer smoothly in the data space via interpolation in the latent space class-conditionally.

SiO Maser Survey towards off-plane O-rich AGBs around the orbital plane of the Sagittarius Stellar Stream

We conducted an SiO maser survey towards 221 O-rich AGB stars with the aim of identifying maser emission associated with the Sagittarius stellar stream. In this survey, maser emission was detected in 44 targets, of which 35 were new detections. All of these masers are within 5 kpc of the Sun. We also compiled a Galactic SiO maser catalogue including ~2300 SiO masers from the literature. The distribution of these SiO masers give a scale height of 0.40 kpc, while 42 sources deviate from the Galactic plane by more than 1.2 kpc, half of which were found in this survey. Regarding SiO masers in the disc, we found both the rotational speeds and the velocity dispersions vary with the Galactic plane distance. Assuming Galactic rotational speed $Θ$0 = 240 km/s , we derived the velocity lags are 15 km/s and 55 km/s for disc and off-plane SiO masers respectively. Moreover, we identified three groups with significant peculiar motions (with 70% confidence). The most significant group is in the thick disc that might trace stream/peculiar motion of the Perseus arm. The other two groups are mainly made up of off-plane sources. The northern and southern off-plane sources were found to be moving at ~33 km/s and 54 km/s away from the Galactic plane, respectively. Causes of these peculiar motions are still unclear. For the two off-plane groups, we suspect they are thick disc stars whose kinematics affected by the Sgr stellar stream or very old Sgr stream debris.

Uniqueness in inverse scattering problems with phaseless far-field data at a fixed frequency

This paper is concerned with uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering with phaseless far-field data at a fixed frequency. The main difficulty of this problem is the so-called translation invariance property of the modulus of the far-field pattern generated by one plane wave as the incident field. Based on our previous work (J. Comput. Phys. 345 (2017), 58-73), the translation invariance property of the phaseless far-field pattern can be broken by using infinitely many sets of superpositions of two plane waves as the incident fields at a fixed frequency. In this paper, we prove that the obstacle and the index of refraction of an inhomogeneous medium can be uniquely determined by the phaseless far-field patterns generated by infinitely many sets of superpositions of two plane waves with different directions at a fixed frequency under the condition that the obstacle is a priori known to be a sound-soft or non-absorbing impedance obstacle and the index of refraction $n$ of the inhomogeneous medium is real-valued and satisfies that either $n-1\ge c_1$ or $n-1\le-c_1$ in the support of $n-1$ for some positive constant $c_1$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first uniqueness result in inverse scattering with phaseless far-field data. Our proofs are based essentially on the limit of the normalized eigenvalues of the far-field operators which is also established in this paper by using a factorization of the far-field operators.

SAM: Semantic Attribute Modulation for Language Modeling and Style Variation

This paper presents a Semantic Attribute Modulation (SAM) for language modeling and style variation. The semantic attribute modulation includes various document attributes, such as titles, authors, and document categories. We consider two types of attributes, (title attributes and category attributes), and a flexible attribute selection scheme by automatically scoring them via an attribute attention mechanism. The semantic attributes are embedded into the hidden semantic space as the generation inputs. With the attributes properly harnessed, our proposed SAM can generate interpretable texts with regard to the input attributes. Qualitative analysis, including word semantic analysis and attention values, shows the interpretability of SAM. On several typical text datasets, we empirically demonstrate the superiority of the Semantic Attribute Modulated language model with different combinations of document attributes. Moreover, we present a style variation for the lyric generation using SAM, which shows a strong connection between the style variation and the semantic attributes.

Hierarchical Orthogonal Matrix Generation and Matrix-Vector Multiplications in Rigid Body Simulations

In this paper, we apply the hierarchical modeling technique and study some numerical linear algebra problems arising from the Brownian dynamics simulations of biomolecular systems where molecules are modeled as ensembles of rigid bodies. Given a rigid body $p$ consisting of $n$ beads, the $6 \times 3n$ transformation matrix $Z$ that maps the force on each bead to $p$'s translational and rotational forces (a $6\times 1$ vector), and $V$ the row space of $Z$, we show how to explicitly construct the $(3n-6) \times 3n$ matrix $\tilde{Q}$ consisting of $(3n-6)$ orthonormal basis vectors of $V^{\perp}$ (orthogonal complement of $V$) using only $\mathcal{O}(n \log n)$ operations and storage. For applications where only the matrix-vector multiplications $\tilde{Q}{\bf v}$ and $\tilde{Q}^T {\bf v}$ are needed, we introduce asymptotically optimal $\mathcal{O}(n)$ hierarchical algorithms without explicitly forming $\tilde{Q}$. Preliminary numerical results are presented to demonstrate the performance and accuracy of the numerical algorithms.

Bearing fault diagnosis under varying working condition based on domain adaptation

Traditional intelligent fault diagnosis of rolling bearings work well only under a common assumption that the labeled training data (source domain) and unlabeled testing data (target domain) are drawn from the same distribution. When the distribution changes, most fault diagnosis models need to be rebuilt from scratch using newly recollected labeled training data. However, it is expensive or impossible to annotate huge amount of training data to rebuild such new model. Meanwhile, large amounts of labeled training data have not been fully utilized yet, which is apparently a waste of resources. As one of the important research directions of transfer learning, domain adaptation (DA) typically aims at minimizing the differences between distributions of different domains in order to minimize the cross-domain prediction error by taking full advantage of information coming from both source and target domains. In this paper, we present one of the first studies on unsupervised DA in the field of fault diagnosis of rolling bearings under varying working conditions and a novel diagnosis strategy based on unsupervised DA using subspace alignment (SA) is proposed. After processed by unsupervised DA with SA, the distributions of training data and testing data become close and the classifier trained on training data can be used to classify the testing data. Experimental results on the 60 domain adaptation diagnosis problems under varying working condition in Case Western Reserve benchmark data and 12 domain adaptation diagnosis problems under varying working conditions in our new data are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed methods can effectively distinguish not only bearing faults categories but also fault severities.

Fast Deep Matting for Portrait Animation on Mobile Phone

Image matting plays an important role in image and video editing. However, the formulation of image matting is inherently ill-posed. Traditional methods usually employ interaction to deal with the image matting problem with trimaps and strokes, and cannot run on the mobile phone in real-time. In this paper, we propose a real-time automatic deep matting approach for mobile devices. By leveraging the densely connected blocks and the dilated convolution, a light full convolutional network is designed to predict a coarse binary mask for portrait images. And a feathering block, which is edge-preserving and matting adaptive, is further developed to learn the guided filter and transform the binary mask into alpha matte. Finally, an automatic portrait animation system based on fast deep matting is built on mobile devices, which does not need any interaction and can realize real-time matting with 15 fps. The experiments show that the proposed approach achieves comparable results with the state-of-the-art matting solvers.

PBODL : Parallel Bayesian Online Deep Learning for Click-Through Rate Prediction in Tencent Advertising System

We describe a parallel bayesian online deep learning framework (PBODL) for click-through rate (CTR) prediction within today's Tencent advertising system, which provides quick and accurate learning of user preferences. We first explain the framework with a deep probit regression model, which is trained with probabilistic back-propagation in the mode of assumed Gaussian density filtering. Then we extend the model family to a variety of bayesian online models with increasing feature embedding capabilities, such as Sparse-MLP, FM-MLP and FFM-MLP. Finally, we implement a parallel training system based on a stream computing infrastructure and parameter servers. Experiments with public available datasets and Tencent industrial datasets show that models within our framework perform better than several common online models, such as AdPredictor, FTRL-Proximal and MatchBox. Online A/B test within Tencent advertising system further proves that our framework could achieve CTR and CPM lift by learning more quickly and accurately.

Towards a three-dimensional distribution of the molecular clouds in the Galactic Centre

We present a study of the three-dimensional structure of the molecular clouds in the Galactic Centre (GC) using CO emission and OH absorption lines. Two CO isotopologue lines, $^{12}$CO ($J$=1$\rightarrow$0) and $^{13}$CO ($J$=1$\rightarrow$0), and four OH ground-state transitions, surveyed by the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH), contribute to this study. We develop a novel method to calculate the OH column density, excitation temperature, and optical depth precisely using all four OH lines, and we employ it to derive a three-dimensional model for the distribution of molecular clouds in the GC for six slices in Galactic latitude. The angular resolution of the data is 15.5 arcmin, which at the distance of the GC (8.34 kpc) is equivalent to 38 pc. We find that the total mass of OH in the GC is in the range 2400-5100 Solar mass . The face-on view at a Galactic latitude of b = 0° displays a bar-like structure with an inclination angle of 67.5 $\pm$ 2.1° with respect to the line of sight. No ring-like structure in the GC is evident in our data, likely due to the low spatial resolution of the CO and OH maps.

On the existence of specified cycles in bipartite tournaments

For two integers $n\geq 3$ and $2\leq p\leq n$, we denote $D(n,p)$ the digraph obtained from a directed $n$-cycle by changing the orientations of $p-1$ consecutive arcs. In this paper, we show that a family of $k$-regular $(k\geq 3)$ bipartite tournament $BT_{4k}$ contains $D(4k,p)$ for all $2\leq p\leq 4k$ unless $BT_{4k}$ is isomorphic to a digraph $D$ such that $(1,2,3,...,4k,1)$ is a Hamilton cycle and $(4m+i-1,i)\in A(D)$ and $(i,4m+i+1)\in A(D)$, where $1\leq m\leq k-1$.

On the spanning connectivity of tournaments

Let $D$ be a digraph. A $k$-container of $D$ between $u$ and $v$, $C(u,v)$, is a set of $k$ internally disjoint paths between $u$ and $v$. A $k$-container $C(u,v)$ of $D$ is a strong (resp. weak) $k^{*}$-container if there is a set of $k$ internally disjoint paths with the same direction (resp. with different directions allowed) between $u$ and $v$ and it contains all vertices of $D$. A digraph $D$ is $k^{*}$-strongly (resp. $k^{*}$-weakly) connected if there exists a strong (resp. weak) $k^{*}$-container between any two distinct vertices. We define the strong (resp. weak) spanning connectivity of a digraph $D$, $κ_{s}^{*}(D)$ (resp. $κ_{w}^{*}(D)$ ), to be the largest integer $k$ such that $D$ is $ω^{*}$-strongly (resp. $ω^{*}$-weakly) connected for all $1\leq ω\leq k$ if $D$ is a $1^{*}$-strongly (resp. $1^{*}$-weakly) connected. In this paper, we show that a tournament with $n$ vertices and irregularity $i(T)\leq k$, if $n\geq6t+5k$ $(t\geq2)$, then $κ_{s}^{*}(T)\geq t$ and $κ_{w}^{*}(T)\geq t+1$ if $n\geq6t+5k-3$ $(t\geq2)$.

Uniqueness in inverse acoustic and electromagnetic scattering by penetrable obstacles with embedded objects

This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by the smallness of the domain which ensures that the lowest transmission eigenvalue is large so that a given wave number k is not an eigenvalue of the interior transmission problem. Another ingredient in our proofs is a priori estimates of solutions to the transmission scattering problems with data in Lp (1<p<2), which are established in this paper by using the integral equation method. A main feature of the new method is that it can deal with the acoustic and electromagnetic cases in a unified way and can be easily applied to deal with inverse scattering by unbounded rough interfaces.
