Poisson processes and a log-concave Bernstein theorem

We discuss interplays between log-concave functions and log-concave sequences. We prove a Bernstein-type theorem, which characterizes the Laplace transform of log-concave measures on the half-line in terms of log-concavity of the alternating Taylor coefficients. We establish concavity inequalities for sequences inspired by the Prékopa-Leindler and the Walkup theorems. One of our main tools is a stochastic variational formula for the Poisson average.

Isotropic constants and Mahler volumes

This paper contains a number of results related to volumes of projective perturbations of convex bodies and the Laplace transform on convex cones. First, it is shown that a sharp version of Bourgain's slicing conjecture implies the Mahler conjecture for convex bodies that are not necessarily centrally-symmetric. Second, we find that by slightly translating the polar of a centered convex body, we may obtain another body with a bounded isotropic constant. Third, we provide a counter-example to a conjecture by Kuperberg on the distribution of volume in a body and in its polar.

Estimates for moments of general measures on convex bodies

We prove several estimates for the moments of arbitrary measures on convex bodies. We apply these estimates to show a new slicing inequality for measures on convex bodies. We also deduce estimates for the outer volume ratio distance from an arbitrary centrally-symmetric convex body in R^n to the class of unit balls of n-dimensional subspaces of L_p-spaces. Finally, we prove a result of the Busemann-Petty type for these moments.

Extremal Kaehler-Einstein metric for two-dimensional convex bodies

Given a convex body $K \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with the barycenter at the origin we consider the corresponding K{ä}hler-Einstein equation $e^{-Φ} = \det D^2 Φ$. If $K$ is a simplex, then the Ricci tensor of the Hessian metric $D^2 Φ$ is constant and equals $\frac{n-1}{4(n+1)}$. We conjecture that the Ricci tensor of $D^2 Φ$ for arbitrary $K$ is uniformly bounded by $\frac{n-1}{4(n+1)}$ and verify this conjecture in the two-dimensional case. The general case remains open.

An example related to the slicing inequality for general measures

For $n\in \mathbb{N}$ let $S_n$ be the smallest number $S>0$ satisfying the inequality $$ \int_K f \le S \cdot |K|^{\frac 1n} \cdot \max_{ξ\in S^{n-1}} \int_{K\cap ξ^\bot} f $$ for all centrally-symmetric convex bodies $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and all even, continuous probability densities $f$ on $K$. Here $|K|$ is the volume of $K$. It was proved by the second-named author that $S_n\le 2\sqrt{n}$, and in analogy with Bourgain's slicing problem, it was asked whether $S_n$ is bounded from above by a universal constant. In this note we construct an example showing that $S_n\ge c\sqrt{n}/\sqrt{\log \log n},$ where $c > 0$ is an absolute constant. Additionally, for any $0 < α< 2$ we describe a related example that satisfies the so-called $ψ_α$-condition.

Eldan's stochastic localization and tubular neighborhoods of complex-analytic sets

Let Z be the zero set of a holomorphic map from C^n to C^k. Assume that Z is non-empty. We prove that for any r > 0, the Gaussian measure of the Euclidean r-neighborhood of Z is at least as large as the Gaussian measure of the Euclidean r-neighborhood of E, where E is any (n-k)-dimensional, affine, complex subspace whose distance from the origin is the same as the distance of Z from the origin.

Optimal compression of approximate inner products and dimension reduction

Let $X$ be a set of $n$ points of norm at most $1$ in the Euclidean space $R^k$, and suppose $\varepsilon>0$. An $\varepsilon$-distance sketch for $X$ is a data structure that, given any two points of $X$ enables one to recover the square of the (Euclidean) distance between them up to an {\em additive} error of $\varepsilon$. Let $f(n,k,\varepsilon)$ denote the minimum possible number of bits of such a sketch. Here we determine $f(n,k,\varepsilon)$ up to a constant factor for all $n \geq k \geq 1$ and all $\varepsilon \geq \frac{1}{n^{0.49}}$. Our proof is algorithmic, and provides an efficient algorithm for computing a sketch of size $O(f(n,k,\varepsilon)/n)$ for each point, so that the square of the distance between any two points can be computed from their sketches up to an additive error of $\varepsilon$ in time linear in the length of the sketches. We also discuss the case of smaller $\varepsilon>2/\sqrt n$ and obtain some new results about dimension reduction in this range. In particular, we show that for any such $\varepsilon$ and any $k \leq t=\frac{\log (2+\varepsilon^2 n)}{\varepsilon^2}$ there are configurations of $n$ points in $R^k$ that cannot be embedded in $R^{\ell}$ for $\ell < ck$ with $c$ a small absolute positive constant, without distorting some inner products (and distances) by more than $\varepsilon$. On the positive side, we provide a randomized polynomial time algorithm for a bipartite variant of the Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma in which scalar products are approximated up to an additive error of at most $\varepsilon$. This variant allows a reduction of the dimension down to $O(\frac{\log (2+\varepsilon^2 n)}{\varepsilon^2})$, where $n$ is the number of points.

Convex geometry and waist inequalities

This paper presents connections between Gromov's work on isoperimetry of waists and Milman's work on the $M$-ellipsoid of a convex body. It is proven that any convex body $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ has a linear image $\tilde{K} \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ of volume one satisfying the following waist inequality: Any continuous map $f:\tilde{K} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{\ell}$ has a fiber $f^{-1}(t)$ whose $(n-\ell)$-dimensional volume is at least $c^{n-\ell}$, where $c > 0$ is a universal constant. In the specific case where $K = [0,1]^n$ it is shown that one may take $\tilde{K} = K$ and $c = 1$, confirming a conjecture by Guth. We furthermore exhibit relations between waist inequalities and various geometric characteristics of the convex body $K$.

Remarks on curvature in the transportation metric

According to a classical result of E.~Calabi any hyperbolic affine hypersphere endowed with its natural Hessian metric has a non-positive Ricci tensor. The affine hyperspheres can be described as the level sets of solutions to the "hyperbolic" toric Kähler-Einstein equation $e^Φ = \det D^2 Φ$ on proper convex cones. We prove a generalization of this theorem by showing that for every $Φ$ solving this equation on a proper convex domain $Ω$ the corresponding metric measure space $(D^2 Φ, e^Φdx)$ has a non-positive Bakry-{É}mery tensor. Modifying the Calabi computations we obtain this result by applying the tensorial maximum principle to the weighted Laplacian of the Bakry-{É}mery tensor. Our computations are carried out in a generalized framework adapted to the optimal transportation problem for arbitrary target and source measures. For the optimal transportation of the log-concave probability measures we prove a third-order uniform dimension-free apriori estimate in the spirit of the second-order Caffarelli contraction theorem, which has numerous applications in probability theory.

Complex Legendre duality

We introduce complex generalizations of the classical Legendre transform, operating on Kähler metrics on a compact complex manifold. These Legendre transforms give explicit local isometric symmetries for the Mabuchi metric on the space of Kähler metrics around any real analytic Kähler metric, answering a question originating in Semmes' work.

Super-Gaussian directions of random vectors

We establish the following universality property in high dimensions: Let $X$ be a random vector with density in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The density function can be arbitrary. We show that there exists a fixed unit vector $θ\in \mathbb{R}^n$ such that the random variable $Y = \langle X, θ\rangle$ satisfies $$ \min \left \{ \mathbb{P}( Y \geq t M ), \mathbb{P}(Y \leq -tM) \right \} \geq c e^{-C t^2} \qquad \qquad \text{for all} \ 0 \leq t \leq \tilde{c} \sqrt{n}, $$ where $M > 0$ is any median of $|Y|$, i.e., $\min \{ \mathbb{P}( |Y| \geq M), \mathbb{P}( |Y| \leq M ) \} \geq 1/2$. Here, $c, \tilde{c}, C > 0$ are universal constants. The dependence on the dimension $n$ is optimal, up to universal constants, improving upon our previous work.

Affine hemispheres of elliptic type

We find that for any n-dimensional, compact, convex subset K of R^{n+1} there is an affinely-spherical hypersurface M in R^{n+1} with center at the relative interior of K, such that the disjoint union of M and K is the boundary of an (n+1)-dimensional, compact, convex set. This so-called affine hemisphere M is uniquely determined by K up to affine transformations, it is of elliptic type, is associated with K in an affinely-invariant manner, and it is centered at the Santalo point of K.

Discrete curvature and abelian groups

We study a natural discrete Bochner-type inequality on graphs, and explore its merit as a notion of curvature in discrete spaces. An appealing feature of this discrete version seems to be that it is fairly straightforward to compute this notion of curvature parameter for several specific graphs of interest - particularly, abelian groups, slices of the hypercube, and the symmetric group under various sets of generators. We further develop this notion by deriving Buser-type inequalities (a la Ledoux), relating functional and isoperimetric constants associated with a graph. Our derivations provide a tight bound on the Cheeger constant (i.e., the edge-isoperimetric constant) in terms of the spectral gap, for graphs with nonnegative curvature, particularly, the class of abelian Cayley graphs - a result of independent interest.

Lipschitz functions on the infinite-dimensional torus

We discuss the spectrum phenomenon for Lipschitz functions on the infinite-dimensional torus. Suppose that $f$ is a measurable, real-valued, Lipschitz function on the torus $\mathbb{T}^{\infty}$. We prove that there exists a number $a \in \mathbb R$ with the following property: For any $ε> 0$ there exists a parallel, infinite-dimensional subtorus $M \subseteq \mathbb T^{\infty}$ such that the restriction of the function $f-a$ to the subtorus $M$ has an $L^{\infty}(M)$-norm of at most $ε$.

Needle decompositions in Riemannian geometry

The localization technique from convex geometry is generalized to the setting of Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is bounded from below. In a nutshell, our method is based on the following observation: When the Ricci curvature is non-negative, log-concave measures are obtained when conditioning the Riemannian volume measure with respect to an integrable geodesic foliation. The Monge mass transfer problem plays an important role in our analysis.

On the oscillation rigidity of a Lipschitz function on a high-dimensional flat torus

Given an arbitrary $1$-Lipschitz function $f$ on the torus $\mathbb{T}^n $, we find a $k$-dimensional subtorus $M \subseteq \mathbb{T}^n$, parallel to the axes, such that the restriction of $f$ to the subtorus $M$ is nearly a constant function. The $k$-dimensional subtorus $M$ is chosen randomly and uniformly. We show that when $k \leq c \log n / (\log \log n + \log 1/\varepsilon)$, the maximum and the minimum of $f$ on this random subtorus $M$ differ by at most $\varepsilon$, with high probability.

Eigenvalue distribution of optimal transportation

We investigate the Brenier map $\nabla Φ$ between the uniform measures on two convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$ or more generally, between two log-concave probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We show that the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix $D^2 Φ$ exhibit remarkable concentration properties on a multiplicative scale, regardless of the choice of the two measures or the dimension $n$.

Moment Measures

With any convex function F on a finite-dimensional linear space X such that F goes to infinity at infinity, we associate a Borel measure on the dual space X*. This measure is obtained by pushing forward the measure exp(-F(x))dx under the differential of F. We propose a class of convex functions - the essentially-continuous, convex functions - for which the above correspondence is in fact a bijection onto the class of finite Borel measures whose barycenter is at the origin and whose support linearly spans the entire space X*. The construction is related to toric Kahler-Einstein metrics in complex geometry, to Prékopa's inequality, and to the Minkowski problem in convex geometry.
