Transversity from two pion interference fragmentation

We present calculation on the azimuthal spin asymmetries for pion pair production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process at both HERMES and COMPASS kinematics, with transversely polarized proton, deuteron and neutron targets. We calculate the asymmetry by adopting a set of parametrization of the interference fragmentation functions and two different models for the transversity. We find that the result for the proton target is insensitive to the approaches of the transversity but more helpful to understand the interference fragmentation functions. However, for the neutron target, which can be obtained through using deuteron and {$^3$He} targets, we find different predictions for different approaches to the transversity. Thus probing the two pion interference fragmentation from the neutron can provide us more interesting information on the transversity.

Melosh rotation: source of the proton's missing spin

It is shown that the observed small value of the integrated spin structure function for protons could be naturally understood within the naive quark model by considering the effect from Melosh rotation. The key to this problem lies in the fact that the deep inelastic process probes the light-cone quarks rather than the instant-form quarks, and that the spin of the proton is the sum of the Melosh rotated light-cone spin of the individual quarks rather than simply the sum of the light-cone spin of the quarks directly.

State-Relevant Maxwell's Equation from Kaluza-Klein Theory

We study a five-dimensional perfect fluid coupled with Kaluza-Klein (KK) gravity. By dimensional reduction, a modified form of Maxwell's equation is obtained, which is relevant to the equation of state of the source. Since the relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and the 3-dimensional formulation are widely used to study space matter, we derive the modified Maxwell's equations and relativistic MHD in 3+1 form. We then take an ideal Fermi gas as an example to study the modified effect, which can be visible under high density or high energy condition, while the traditional Maxwell's equation can be regarded as a result in the low density and low temperature limit. We also indicate the possibility to test the state-relevant effect of KK theory in a telluric laboratory.

Phenomenological analysis of nucleon strangeness and meson-nucleon sigma terms

We calculate the nucleon strangeness $y_N$ in the chiral quark model and the meson cloud model. With the internal relation between the sigma term of $π$$N$ ($σ_{πN}$) and $y_N$, we present the results of $σ_{πN}$ in these two models. Our calculations show that $y_N$ from the chiral quark model is significant larger than that from the meson cloud model, whereas the difference of $σ_{πN}$ between the two models is relatively small. We also present the results of $σ_{K N}$ and $σ_{ηN}$, which could be determined by $σ_{πN}$ and $y_N$ from their definition in the current algebra, and find that these two physical parameters are quite sensitive to $y_N$. The results indicate the necessity to restrict the parameters of the two models from more precision measurements.

Zero-Mode Contribution in Nucleon-Delta Transition

We investigate the transition form factors between nucleon and $Δ$(1232) particles by using a covariant quark-spectator-diquark field theory model in (3+1) dimensions. Performing a light-front calculation in parallel with the manifestly covariant calculation in light-front helicity basis, we examine the light-front zero-mode contribution to the helicity components of light-front good ("+") current matrix elements. Choosing the light-front gauge ($ε^+_{h=\pm}=0$) with circular polarization in Drell-Yan-West frame, we find that only the helicity components $({1\over 2}, {1\over 2})$ and $({1\over 2},-{1\over 2})$ of the good current receive the zero-mode contribution. Taking into account the zero-mode, we find the prescription independence in obtaining the light-front solution of form factors from any three helicity matrix elements with smeared light-front wavefunctions. The angular condition, which guarantees the full covariance of different schemes, is recovered.

Mixing of 1/2^- Octets under SU(3) Symmetry

We investigate the J^p=1/2^- baryons in the octets based on flavor SU(3) symmetry. Since baryons with same quantum numbers can mix with each other, we consider the mixing between two octets before their mixing with the singlet. Most predicted decay widths are consistent with the experimental data, and meanwhile we predict two possible $Ξ$ mass ranges of the two octets.

Single Target-Spin Asymmetry in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on Transversely Polarized Nucleon Target

We use a new set of Collins functions to update a previous prediction on the azimuthal asymmetries of pion productions in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process on a transversely polarized nucleon target. We find that the calculated results can give a good explanation to the HERMES experiment with the new parametrization, and this can enrich our knowledge of the fragmentation process. Furthermore, with two different approaches of distribution and fragmentation functions, we present a prediction on the azimuthal asymmetries of pion and kaon productions at the kinematics region of the experiments E06010 and E06011 planned at Jefferson Lab (JLab). It is shown that the results are insensitive to the models for the pion case. However, the results for kaon production are sensitive to different approaches of distribution and fragmentation functions. This is helpful to clarify some points in the study of the azimuthal spin asymmetries and fragmentation functions in hadronization processes.

Space-like and time-like pion-rho transition form factors in the light-cone formalism

Having calculated the light-cone wave function of the pseudoscalar meson by using two equivalent and fully covariant methods, we generalize such methods to the valence Fock states of the vector meson in the light-cone formalism. We investigate the decay constant of the $ρ$ meson $f_ρ$, the $γ^{\ast} π\to ρ$ and $γ^* ρ\to π$ transition form factors and especially the transition magnetic moments. By using two groups of constraint parameters, we predict the space-like and time-like form factors $F_{πρ}(Q^2)$ and $F_{ρπ}(Q^2)$ at low and moderate energy scale and the electromagnetic radius of these transition processes. In addition, we extend our calculation to $γ^* π\to ω$ space-like and time-like form factors by using the same sets of parameters.

EMC effect in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering process

By considering the $x$-dependence of $π^+$, $π^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $p$, $\bar{p}$ hadron productions in charged lepton semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off nuclear target (using Fe as an example) and deuteron D target, % at $Q^2=5$ GeV$^2$, we find that $(\barΛ^A/Λ^A)/(\barΛ^D/Λ^D)$ and $({\bar{p}}^A/{p}^A)/({\bar{p}}^A/p^A)$ are ideal to figure out the nuclear sea content, which is predicted to be different by different models accounting for the nuclear EMC effect.

Double transverse spin asymmetry in the $p^\uparrow\bar{p}^\uparrow$ Drell-Yan process from Sivers functions

We show that the transverse double spin asymmetry (DSA) in the Drell-Yan process contributed only from the Sivers functions can be picked out by the weighting function $\frac{Q_T}{M^2}(\cos(ϕ-ϕ_{S_1})\cos(ϕ-ϕ_{S_2})+3\sin(ϕ-ϕ_{S_1})\sin(ϕ-ϕ_{S_2}))$. The asymmetry is proportional to the product of two Sivers functions from each hadron $f_{1T}^{\perp(1)}\times f_{1T}^{\perp (1)}$. Using two sets of Sivers functions extracted from the semi-inclusive deeply elastic scattering data at HERMES, we estimate this asymmetry in the $p^\uparrow\bar{p}^\uparrow$ Drell-Yan process which is possible to be performed in HESR at GSI. The prediction of DSA in the Drell-Yan process contributed by the function $g_{1T}(x,\Vec k_T^2)$, which can be extracted by the weighting function $\frac{Q_T}{M^2}(3\cos(ϕ-ϕ_{S_1})\cos(ϕ-ϕ_{S_2})+\sin(ϕ-ϕ_{S_1})\sin(ϕ-ϕ_{S_2}))$, is also given at GSI.

The leading particle effect from light quark fragmentation in charm hadroproduction

The asymmetry of $D^-$ and $D^+$ meson production in $π^-N$ scattering observed by the E791 experiment is a typical phenomenon known as the leading particle effect in charm hadroproducton. We show that the phenomenon can be explained by the effect of light quark fragmentation into charmed hadrons (LQF). Meanwhile, the size of the LQF effect is estimated from data of the E791 experiment. A comparison is made with the estimate of the LQF effect from prompt like-sign dimuon rate in neutrino experiments. The influence of the LQF effect on the measurement of nucleon strange distribution asymmetry from charged current charm production processes is briefly discussed.

Determining quark and lepton mass matrices by a geometrical interpretation

By designating one eigenvector of the mass matrix, one can reduce the free parameters in the mass matrix effectively. Applying this method to the quark mass matrix and to the lepton mass matrix, we find that this method is consistent with available experimental data. This approach may provide some hints for constructing theoretical models. Especially, in the lepton sector, the Koide's mass relation is connected to the element of the tribimaximal matrix through Foot's geometrical interpretation. In the quark sector, we suggest another mass formula and the same procedure also applies.

Propagation of strangelets in the Earth's atmosphere

A new model for the description of the behaviour of strangelets in the Earth's atmosphere is presented. Strangelet fission induced by collision with air nuclei is included. It is shown that strangelets with certain parameters of initial mass and energy may reach depths near sea level, which can be examined by ground-based experiments.

Flavor separation of the Boer-Mulders function from unpolarized $π^- p$ and $π^- D$ Drell-Yan processes

We show that measuring the $\cos 2ϕ$ angular dependence in unpolarized Drell-Yan processes with $π^-$ beams colliding on proton and deuteron targets can determine the ratio of the Boer-Mulders functions for $d$ and $u$ quarks inside the proton $h_1^{\perp,d}/h_1^{\perp,u}$, which is still lack of theoretical constraint. The comparison of the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries measured in unpolarized $π^- p$ and $π^- D$ Drell-Yan processes, which are accessible at CERN by the COMPASS collaboration, can help to discriminate whether $h_1^\perp$ effects or QCD vacuum effects are preferred by data.

Transverse spin effects of sea quarks in unpolarized nucleons

We calculate the non-zero Boer-Mulders functions of sea quarks inside the proton in a meson-baryon fluctuation model. The results show that the transverse spin effects of sea quarks in an unpolarized nucleon are sizable. Using the obtained antiquark Boer-Mulders functions, we estimate the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in the unpolarized $pp$ and $p D$ Drell-Yan processes at FNAL E866/NuSea experiments. The prediction for the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in the unpolarized $pp$ Drell-Yan process at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is also given.

The cos 2 phi asymmetry of Drell-Yan and J/psi production in unpolarized ppbar scattering

We investigate the cos 2 phi azimuthal asymmetry in Drell--Yan and J/psi production from unpolarized ppbar scattering at GSI-HESR energies. The contribution to this asymmetry arising from the leading-twist Boer-Mulders function h_1^perp(x, k_T^2), which describes a correlation between the transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks in an unpolarized hadron, is explicitly evaluated, and predictions for the GSI-HESR kinematic regime are presented. We show that the cos 2 phi asymmetry is quite sizable both on the J/psi peak and in the Drell-Yan continuum region. Therefore these processes may offer an experimentally viable access to the Boer-Mulders function in the early unpolarized stage of GSI experiments.

Muon Charge Information from Geomagnetic Deviation in Inclined Extensive Air Showers

We propose to extract the charge information of high energy muons in very inclined extensive air showers by analyzing their relative lateral positions in the shower transverse plane. We calculate the muon lateral deviation under the geomagnetic field and compare it to dispersive deviations from other causes. By our criterion of resolvability, positive and negative muons with energies above $10^4$ GeV will be clearly separated into two lobes if the shower zenith angle is larger than $70^\circ$. Thus we suggest a possible approach to measure the $μ^+ / μ^-$ ratio for high energy muons.

The 27-plet baryons with spin 3/2 under SU(3) symmetry

We investigate the spin 3/2 baryons in the 27-plet based on flavor SU(3) symmetry. For $J^p=3/2^+$, we find all the candidates for non-exotic members. For $J^p=3/2^-$, we predict a new non-exotic member $Λ(1780)$. Fitting the mass spectrum and calculating the widths of the members show an approximate symmetry of the 27-plet of SU(3). We find that the exotic members have relatively large widths and the $Ξ(1950)$ has spin and parity $J^p=3/2^-$. The possibility of assigning the non-exotic candidates to an octet is also analyzed.
