Strange quark distribution and corrections due to shadowing and isospin symmetry breaking

The strange sea quarks distributions of nucleons obtained by two global analyses based on available structure function data of muon and neutrino deep inelastic scatterings are different from the strange sea quark distribution measured by the CCFR Collaboration from dimuon events in neutrino scattering. We discuss possible contributions to this discrepancy from the nuclear shadowing in the deuteron and from the isospin symmetry breaking in the sea between the neutron and the proton.

Parton Sum Rules and Improved Scaling Variable

The effect from quark masses and transversal motion on the Gottfried, Bjorken, and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules is examined by using a quark-parton model of nucleon structure functions based on an improved scaling variable. Its use results in corrections to the Gottfried, Bjorken, and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules. We use the Brodsky-Huang-Lepage prescription of light-cone wavefunctions to estimate the size of the corrections. We constrain our choice of parameters by the roughly known higher twist corrections to the Bjorken sum rule and find that the resulting corrections to the Gottfried and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules are relevant, though not large enough to explain the observed sum rule violations.

The x-Dependent Helicity Distributions for Valence Quarks in Nucleons

We derive simple relations between the polarized and unpolarized valence quark distributions in a light-cone SU(6) quark-spectator model for nucleons. The explicit x-dependent Wigner rotation effect for the light-flavor quarks is calculated. It is shown that the mass difference between the scalar and vector spectators could reproduce the up and down valence quark asymmetry that accounts for the observed ratio $F_2^{n}/F_2^{p}$. The proton, neutron, and deuteron polarization asymmetries, $A_1^p$, $A_1^n$, and $A_1^d$, are in agreement with the available data by taking into account the Wigner rotation effect. The calculated $x$-dependent helicity distributions of the up and down valence quarks are compared with the recent results from semi-inclusive hadron asymmetries in polarized deep inelastic scattering by the Spin Muon Collaboration.

Parton Sum Rules and Nucleon Structure Functions

A brief summary on the Wigner rotation effect in the understanding of the proton spin ``crisis" related with the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule violation, and on the proton-neutron isospin symmetry breaking explanation of the Gottfried sum rule violation. The proton spin could be fully provided by the spin sum of quarks if one considers the Wigner rotation effect in the measured quark helicity distributions.

The perturbative pion-photon transition form factors with transverse momentum corrections

We perform a perturbative QCD analysis of the quark transverse momentum effect on the pion-photon transition form factors $F_{πγ}$ and $F_{πγ^*}$ in the standard light-cone formalism, with two phenomenological models of wavefunction as the input of the non-perturbative aspect of the pion. We point out that the transverse momentum dependence in both the numerator and the denominator of the hard scattering amplitude is of the same importance and should be considered consistently. It is shown that after taking into account the quark transverse momentum corrections, the results obtained from different model wave function are consistent with the available experimental data at finite $Q^2$.

Non-perturbative effect in the nucleon structure function and the Gottfried sum

We investigate the non-perturbative effect in the nucleon structure function and the Gottfried sum by using a non-perturbative quark propagator with lowest dimensional condensate contributions from the QCD vacuum. It is shown that the non-perturbative effect modifies the conventional quark-parton model formula of the nucleon structure function at finite $Q^2$ and suggests a non-trivial $Q^2$ dependence in the Gottfried sum.

Consequence of the Wigner Rotation: Perturbative QCD Analysis of the Pion Form Factor

We analyse the perturbative contributions from the higher helicity ($λ_{1}+λ_{1}=\pm 1$) components, which should be naturally contained in the light-cone wave function for the pion as a consequence of the Wigner rotation, in the QCD calculation of the pion form factor. It is pointed out that the contributions may provide the other fraction needed to fit the pion form factor data besides the perturbative contributions from the ordinary helicity components evaluated using the factorization formula with the asymptotic form of the distribution amplitude. We suggest a way to test the higher helicity state contributions.

The strange quark spin of the proton in semi-inclusive $Λ$ leptoproduction

Considering the possible interpretation of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule violation that the strange quark in the polarized proton is remarkably polarized in the opposite direction of the proton spin, we investigate its implication in the semi-inclusive $Λ$ production in deep inelastic process with the electron beam unpolarized and proton target polarized longitudinally. As a result, we find that the measurement of the $Λ$ polarization in the process considered can provide clean information about the strange quark spin distribution in the proton.

Sea-quark Content of Nucleons from Proton-induced Drell-Yan Production

We analyse the proton-induced Drell-Yan production in both the flavor asymmetry and isospin breaking explanations for the violation of the Gottfried sum rule. Consequences from three different forms of corrections to the flavor and isospin symmetric parton distributions are examined. It is found that the calculated results are sensitive to the choices of parameters and parton distributions, and to the ways the corrections are introduced. All three forms of corrections could be consistent with the recent Fermilab Experiment E772 data for the ratio of cross section $R=σ_{W}/σ_{IS}$ and for the shape of the differential cross section $m^{3}d^{2}σ/dx_{F}dm$ for $^{2}$H.

Analysis of the Pion Wave Function in Light-Cone Formalism

Several general constraints are suggested to analyze the pionic valence-state wave function. It is found that the present model wave functions used in light-cone formalism of perturbative quantum chromodynamics have failed these requirements to fit the pionic form factor data and the reasonable valence-state structure function which does not exceed the pionic structure function data for $x \rightarrow 1$ simultaneously. Furthermore, it is pointed out that there is a possibility to find model wave functions which can satisfy all of general constraints. Also we show that there are two higher helicity $(λ_{1} + λ_{2} =\pm1)$ components in the light-cone wave function for the pion as a natural consequence from the Melosh rotation and it is speculated that these components should be incorporated into the perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Finite Volume Effect of Nucleons and the Formation of the Quark-Gluon Plasma

We study a thermodynamically consistent implementation of the nucleon volume in the mean field theory, and find that this volume has large consequences on the properties of hadronic matter under extreme conditions such as in astrophysical objects and high energy heavy-ion collisions. It is shown that we can reproduce the critical temperature $T_{c}\simeq 200$ MeV predicted by lattice QCD calculations for the phase transition from hadronic matter to quark-gluon plasma, by using parameters which are adjusted to fit all empirical data for normal nuclear matter.

The Proton Spin and the Wigner Rotation

It is shown that in both the gluonic and strange sea explanations of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule violation discovered by the European Muon Collaboration (EMC), the spin of the proton, when viewed in in its rest reference frame, could by fully provided by quarks and antiquarks within a simple quark model picture, taken into account the relativistic effect from the Wigner rotation.

Spin Structure of the Pion in a Light-Cone Representation

The spin structure of the pion is discussed by transforming the wave function for the pion in the naive quark model into a light-cone representation. It is shown that there are higher helicity ($λ_{1}+λ_{2}=\pm1$) states in the full light-cone wave function for the pion besides the ordinary helicity ($λ_{1}+λ_{2}=0$) component wave functions as a consequence from the Melosh rotation relating spin states in light-front dynamics and those in instant-form dynamics. Some low energy properties of the pion, such as the electromagnetic form factor, the charged mean square radius, and the weak decay constant, could be interrelated in this representation with reasonable parameters.

Effect due to compositeness of nucleons in deep inelastic lepton nucleus scattering

The off-shell behaviors of bound nucleons in deep inelastic lepton nucleus scattering are discussed in two scenarios with the basic constituents chosen to be baryon-mesons and quark-gluons respectively in light-cone formalism. It is found that when taking into account the effect due to internal quark structure of nucleons, the derived scaling variable for bound nucleons and the calculated nuclear structure functions are different from those in considering the baryon-mesons as the effective elementary constituents. This implies that the pure baryon-meson descriptions of nuclei give the inaccurate off-shell behavior of the bound nucleon structure function, thereby the quark-gluons seem to be the most appropriate degrees of freedom for nuclear descriptions. It is also shown that the EMC effect cannot be explained by nuclear binding effect from a sound theoretical basis.

Flavour Distributions in the Nucleons: SU(2) Sea Asymmetry or Isospin Symmetry Breaking?

The Gottfried sum rule violation reported by the New Muon Collaboration(NMC) was interpreted as indication for a flavour asymmetry of the sea quark in the nucleons. We investigate the alternative possibility that isospin symmetry between the proton and the neutron is breaking. We examine systematically the consequences of this possibility for several processes, namely, neutrino deep inelastic scattering, charged pion Drell-Yan process, proton Drell-Yan process, and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, and conclude that a decision between the two alternative explanations is possible.

Finite volume of baryons and the mass limit for neutron stars

We confirmed the following idea by numerical calculation: The extended structure of baryons may make the nuclear equation of state stiffer at higher density while keeping the compression modulus for normal nuclear matter around its empirical value $K=240MeV$.The model built in this wayy fits all empirical data for normal nuclear matter and gives the mass limit of neutron stars compatible with the observation.
