Lorentz invariance violation induced threshold anomaly versus very-high energy cosmic photon emission from GRB 221009A

It has been reported that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) observed very high energy photons from GRB 221009A, with the highest energy reaching 18~TeV. We find that observation of such high energy photons is quite nontrivial since extragalactic background light could absorb these photons severely and the flux is too weak to be observed. Therefore we discuss a potential mechanism for us to observe these photons, and suggest that Lorentz invariance violation induced threshold anomaly of the process \(γγ\to e^-e^+\) provides a candidate to explain this phenomenon.

Searching Lorentz invariance violation from cosmic photon attenuation

Lorentz invariance violation~(LIV) can change the threshold behavior predicted by special relativity and cause threshold anomalies which affect the propagation of cosmic photons. In this work, we focus on the threshold anomaly effect on cosmic photon attenuations by extragalactic background light~(EBL) and discuss how to identify LIV from observations of very high energy~(VHE) photons propagated from long distance in the universe. We point out that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO), one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays currently operating at TeV and PeV energies, is an ideal facility for performing such LIV searching. We apply the proposed strategy to discuss the newly observed gamma-ray burst GRB 221009A to demonstrate the predictive ability of our suggestions.

Leptogenesis from low-energy CP violation in minimal left-right symmetric model

We perform a thermal unflavored leptogenesis analysis on minimal left-right symmetric models with discrete left-right symmetry identified as generalized parity or charge conjugation. When left-right symmetry is unbroken in the lepton Yukawa sector, the neutrino Dirac coupling matrix is completely determined by neutrino masses and mixing angles, allowing CP violation needed to generate leptogenesis totally resides in the low-energy sector. With two lepton asymmetry generation ways, both type I and mixed type I$+$II neutrino mass generation mechanisms are considered. After solving the Boltzmann equations numerically, we find that the low-energy CP phases in the lepton mixing matrix can successfully produce the observed baryon asymmetry, and in some cases, the Dirac CP phase can be the only source of CP violation. Finally, we discuss the interplay among low-energy CP phase measurements, leptogenesis, and neutrinoless double beta decay. We show that the viable models for successful leptogenesis can be probed in next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments.

Axion-Photon Conversion of LHAASO Multi-TeV and PeV Photons

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has reported the detection of a large number of multi-TeV-scale photon events including also several PeV-scale gamma-ray-photon events with energy as high as 1.4 PeV. The possibility that some of these events may have extragalactic origins is not yet excluded. Here we propose a mechanism for the traveling of very-high-energy (VHE) and ultra-high-energy (UHE) photons based upon the axion-photon conversion scenario, which allows extragalactic above-threshold photons to be detected by observers on the Earth. We show that the axion-photon conversation can serve as an alternative mechanism, besides the threshold anomaly due to Lorentz invariance violation, for the very-high-energy features of the newly observed gamma ray burst GRB 221009A.

Speed Variations of Cosmic Photons and Neutrinos from Loop Quantum Gravity

Recently a series of analyses on the flight time of cosmic photons and neutrinos suggests that the speed of light \emph{in vacuo} takes the energy-dependent form $v(E)\simeq 1-E/E_{\text{LIV}}^{γ}$ with $E_{\text{LIV}}^{γ}\approx 3.6\times 10^{17}~\text{GeV}$, and meanwhile the speed of neutrinos is proposed to be $v(E)\simeq 1\pm E/E_{\text{LIV}}^{ν}$ with $E_{\text{LIV}}^{ν}\approx 6.5\times 10^{17}~\text{GeV}$ and $\pm {}$ representing the helicity dependence. This novel picture immediately urges us to provide a satisfactory theoretical explanation. Among all the attempts to predict the speed variations from quantum gravity, we find that loop quantum gravity can serve as a good candidate for explaining the aforementioned picture consistently.

Lorentz- and CPT-violating neutrinos from string/D-brane model

We show that the space-time foam model from string/D-brane theory predicts a scenario in which neutrinos can possess linearly energy dependent speed variation, together with an asymmetry between neutrinos and antineutrinos, indicating the possibility of Lorentz and CPT symmetry violation for neutrinos. Such scenario is supported by a phenomenological conjecture from the possible associations of IceCube ultrahigh-energy neutrino events with the gamma-ray bursts. It is also consistent with the constraints set by the energy-losing decay channels~(e.g., $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair emission, or neutrino splitting) upon superluminal neutrino velocities. We argue that the plausible violations of energy-momentum conservation during decay may be responsible for the stable propagation of these neutrinos, and hence for the evasion of relevant constraints.

Joint photon-electron Lorentz violation parameter plane from LHAASO data

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO) is one of the most sensitive gamma-ray detector arrays, whose ultrahigh-energy~(UHE) work bands not only help to study the origin and acceleration mechanism of UHE cosmic rays, but also provide the opportunity to test fundamental physics concepts such as Lorentz symmetry. LHAASO directly observes the $1.42~\mathrm{PeV}$ highest-energy photon. By adopting the synchrotion self-Compton model, LHAASO also suggests that the $1.12~\mathrm{PeV}$ high-energy photon from Crab Nebula corresponds to a $2.3~\mathrm{PeV}$ high-energy electron. We study the $1.42~\mathrm{PeV}$ photon decay and the $2.3~\mathrm{PeV}$ electron decay to perform a joint analysis on photon and electron two-dimensional Lorentz violation~(LV) parameter plane. Our analysis is systematic and comprehensive, and we naturally get the strictest constraints from merely considering photon LV effect in photon decay and electron LV effect in electron decay. Our result also permits the parameter space for new physics beyond relativity.

Ultra-high energy cosmic neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts

Based on recent proposal to associate IceCube TeV and PeV neutrino events with gamma-ray bursts~(GRBs) by considering the Lorentz violation of neutrinos, we provide a new estimate on the GRB neutrino flux and such result is much bigger than previous results by the IceCube Collaboration. Among these 24 neutrino ``shower" events above 60~TeV, 12 events are associated with GRBs. Such result is comparable with the prediction from GRB fireball models. Analysis of track events provide consistent result with the shower events to associate high energy cosmic neutrinos with GRBs under the same Lorentz violation features of neutrinos. We also make a background estimation and reveal GRBs as a significant source for the ultra-high energy IceCube neutrino events. Our work supports the Lorentz violation and $CPT$-violation of neutrinos, indicating new physics beyond relativity.

Dilepton production in the photodisintegration of the deuteron

We study the lepton pair production in the photodisintegration of the deuteron process. The complete seven-fold differential cross section is calculated via the Bethe-Heitler mechanism with final state interactions taken into account. The deuteron bound state is described by a relativistic covariant deuteron-nucleon vertex. With numerical results, we find that the differential cross section has strong dependence on the lepton azimuthal angle in the small polar angle region and sharp peaks appear in the dependence on the invariant mass of the produced lepton pair or the two nucleons in the final state. We demonstrate that such nearly singular feature originates from the collinearity between the produced lepton or antilepton and the incident photon, and it is physically regularized by the lepton mass in our calculation. The final state interaction between the knocked-out nucleon and the recoil nucleon redistributes the differential cross section over the missing momentum, with a significant enhancement at large missing momentum and a suppression in the intermediate region. With a further decomposition of the final state interaction contribution, it is found that the on-shell term dominates the near quasi-elastic region while the off-shell term dominates the other end. In addition, we examine the contribution from the interference between the proton amplitude and the neutron amplitude, which as expected is found negligible even if the proton-neutron rescattering is included. The result in this work can serve as an input for the analysis and background estimation of multiple exclusive measurements at Jefferson Lab and future electron-ion colliders.

Photon-pion transition form factor of two photon process at BESIII from light-cone quantum field theory

This work studies the experiments of two-photon processes at BESIII from a theoretical viewpoint in light-cone quantum field theory. We adopt the momentum space wave function of the pion in the light-cone formalism by two forms of the Brodsky-Huang-Lepage~(BHL) prescription and the light-cone holographic QCD. We find that the wave function got by the light-cone holographic QCD can be related to the BHL wave function by a Jacobian factor. Then we calculate the transition form factor~(TFF) of the two-photon process by these two wave functions under the light-cone quark model. We compare the calculated results with the preliminary experimental data at BESIII and also other theoretical calculations.

Lorentz-violation-induced arrival time delay of astroparticles in Finsler spacetime

Finsler geometry is a natural and fundamental generalization of Riemann geometry. The Finsler structure depends on both coordinates and velocities. We present the arrival time delay of astroparticles subject to Lorentz violation in the framework of Finsler geometry, and the result corresponds to that derived by Jacob and Piran in the standard model of cosmology.

Lorentz Symmetry Violation of Cosmic Photons

As a basic symmetry of space-time, Lorentz symmetry has played important roles in various fields of physics, and it is a glamorous question whether Lorentz symmetry breaks. Since Einstein proposed special relativity, Lorentz symmetry has withstood very strict tests, but there are still motivations for Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) research from both theoretical consideration and experimental feasibility, that attract physicists to work on LV theories, phenomena and experimental tests with enthusiasm. There are many theoretical models including LV effects, and different theoretical models predict different LV phenomena, from which we can verify or constrain LV effects. Here, we introduce three types of LV theories: quantum gravity theory, space-time structure theory and effective field theory with extra-terms. Limited by the energy of particles, the experimental tests of LV are very difficult; however, due to the high energy and long propagation distance, high-energy particles from astronomical sources can be used for LV phenomenological researches. Especially with cosmic photons, various astronomical observations provide rich data from which one can obtain various constraints for LV researches. Here, we review four common astronomical phenomena which are ideal for LV studies, together with current constraints on LV effects of photons.

CP violation in $B_s$ decays mediated by two nearly-degenerate Majorana neutrinos

We study the \textit{CP} violation in the lepton-number-violating process $B_s^0 \rightarrow D_s^- μ^+ μ^+ π^-$ and its \textit{CP}-conjugate process $\bar{B_s^0} \rightarrow D_s^+ μ^- μ^- π^+$ that are induced by two GeV-scale Majorana neutrinos with nearly-degenerate masses. Our result shows that the size of the \textit{CP} violation could become considerable if the mass difference between the two Majorana neutrinos is around the decay width of the neutrinos. We perform experimental analysis on the \textit{CP}-violating processes at LHCb within its upgrade II. The analysis shows that under current constraint on the heavy-light neutrino mixing parameter, it is possible that such \textit{CP} violation is observed with the LHCb experimental ability. We also give the upper bound on the heavy-light mixing parameter $|U_{μN}|^2$ under the assumption that no positive signal of the process is observed. The result shows that such modes can give complementary constraint compared with previous experiments such as NuTeV, BEBC, etc. in the mass region 1~GeV $< m_N <$ 3~GeV.

Six-dimensional light-front Wigner distribution of hadrons

We propose a six-dimensional light-front Wigner distribution for the complete description of partonic structures of a hadron such as pion and proton, taking advantage of the recently proposed light-front variable $\tilde{z}$ by Miller and Brodsky. Quantities derived from the Wigner distribution contain the most general information of partonic structures, including also new quantities correlating longitudinal coordinate with transverse momenta or transverse coordinates, together with spins. The new Wigner distribution can be viewed as a relativistic version of the original Wigner distribution in hadron physics and an extension of widely utilized five-dimensional light-front Wigner distribution.

Testing Lorentz invariance of electrons with LHAASO observations of PeV gamma-rays from the Crab Nebula

The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory~(LHAASO) recently reported the detection of gamma-ray emissions with energies up to $1.1~\textrm{PeV}$ from the Crab Nebula. Using the absence of vacuum Cherenkov effect by inverse-Compton electrons, we improve previous bounds to linear-order Lorentz invariance violation (LV) in the dispersion relations of electrons by $10^{4}$ times. We show that the LV effect on electrons is severely constrained, compatible with certain type of LV as expected by some models of quantum gravity~(QG), such as the string/D-brane inspired space-time foam. We argue that such models are supported by the Crab Nebula constraints from the LHAASO observations, as well as various LV phenomenologies for photons to date.

New Test of Neutrino Oscillation Coherence with Leggett-Garg Inequality

Leggett-Garg Inequality~(LGI) is a time analogue of Bell's inequality that concerns measurements performed on a system at different times. Violation to LGI indicates quantum coherence. We present a Leggett-Garg-type inequality compatible with more general neutrino oscillation frameworks, allowing the effects of decoherence to be taken into consideration. The inequality is applied to test coherence for data from Daya Bay, MINOS, and KamLAND experiments, and their results are compared to theoretical predictions to investigate decoherence. Both Daya Bay and MINOS data exhibit clear violations of over $10σ$, and of over 90$\%$ of theoretical predictions, while the KamLAND data exhibit violation of $1.9σ$, being of 58$\%$ of the theoretical prediction. The present work is the first to have considered the energy uncertainties in neutrino coherence tests.

Leading and higher twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions in the spectator model

Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, also abbreviated as TMDs, offer a three-dimensional picture of hadrons by taking the intrinsic transverse momentum of the parton into consideration. Hence, they are very important for us to understand the structure of hadrons. In this article, we calculate and summarize all TMDs of quark through the spectator model, from twist-2 to twist-4. Especially, we give complete results of TMDs at twist-4. We adopt a general analytical framework to calculate TMDs, with both scalar and axial-vector spectators being considered. All TMDs are calculated analytically in the light-cone coordinate, and single gluon rescattering is considered to generate T-odd TMDs. T-even TMDs are also calculated to this level, maybe for the first time. Different from the traditional point of view, the twist-4 TMDs can contribute to some physical observables like azimuthal asymmetries. An approximate formula of the Sivers asymmetry, including twist-4 TMDs, is given.

Boer-Mulders function of the pion and pretzelosity distribution of the proton in the polarized pion-proton Drell-Yan process at COMPASS

We present a phenomenological analysis of the $q_{\mathrm{T}}$-weighted transverse spin dependent azimuthal asymmetry recently measured by the COMPASS Collaboration in polarized pion-proton Drell-Yan process. In the kinematical regimes explored by experiments, we consider the leading-twist contributions from the Boer-Mulders distribution functions $h_{1}^{\perp}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ of both the pion and the proton, the transversity distribution $h_{1}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ and the pretzelosity distribution $h_{1\mathrm{T}}^{\perp}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ of the proton, with the unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent distribution function $f_{1}(x,k_{\mathrm{T}}^{2})$ of the proton being also involved in the calculation. By comparing the data reported by the COMPASS Collaboration with theoretical calculated results, we find that the COMPASS measurements represent the first experimental evidence of the Boer-Mulders effect in polarized Drell-Yan process. We also test the universality between proton and pion Boer-Mulders functions.
