Spin-spin entanglement at high energy

Spin correlations offer a quantum-information perspective on the partonic final states produced in high-energy scattering. We discuss the spin-density matrix of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in two complementary small-$x$ processes. In coherent diffractive production, color-singlet exchange enforces an unusually strong relation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality: a longitudinal photon creates a maximally entangled pair, whereas for a transverse photon the pair is generically both entangled and Bell nonlocal, with a model-independent point of maximal entanglement. In inclusive back-to-back production, the density matrix factorizes into a hard spin tensor and the unpolarized and linearly polarized Weizsäcker--Williams gluon distributions. The latter generates an azimuthal modulation and can increase the concurrence when the dijet relative momentum and imbalance are approximately orthogonal. Strikingly, in the saturation model considered, nonlinear effects wash out this modulation for $q_\perp\lesssim 3Q_s$, whereas the dilute BFKL limit, in which $G_2/G_0\to1$, yields a maximal modulation independent of the imbalance magnitude. These results connect quantum-information observables with the Pomeron and saturation physics.

Polarization, Maximal Concurrence, and Pure States in High-Energy Collisions

We establish a quantitative relation between local spin polarization and quantum entanglement in two-qubit systems by mathematically proving a closed-form upper bound on the concurrence at fixed local polarization magnitudes. The bound shows how the maximal concurrence is jointly constrained by the two local polarizations. We further demonstrate that this bound is saturated by pure states in certain cases with identical polarizations. As a concrete physical application, we consider the parity-violating process $e^+e^- \to Z^0 \to q\bar{q}$, which generates final-state spin polarization. We show that the maximal concurrence is attained in specific kinematic regions and is significantly reduced relative to the unpolarized case. These results establish a general, process-independent framework connecting local polarization, maximal entanglement, and pure states.

Physics of the Electron-Ion Collider in China

The Electron-Ion Collider in China (EicC), a cutting-edge facility under development, aims to unveil the internal structure of nucleons and nuclei by leveraging collisions of high-intensity polarized electrons and ions (polarized protons, polarized deuterons, polarized $^{3}$He, and unpolarized heavy ions up to Uranium) at center-of-mass energies of 15-20 GeV and luminosity of (2-4)$\times 10^{33}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. Its primary physics objectives include 3D tomography of nucleon spin and momentum structure, fundamental questions regarding the origin of nucleon mass, partonic structure of nuclei and parton interactions with the nuclear environment, and exploration of exotic hadronic states. In this paper, we review the physics potential of the EicC and highlight its unique capabilities for advancing precision nucleon structure studies by combining its specialized kinematic coverage and high luminosity. Since traditional topics like 3D nucleon structure have already been well-covered by several extensive reviews, we have deliberately dedicated significant space to recent progress in nucleon mass decomposition, nucleon energy-energy correlation, quantum information, and artificial intelligence applications in high-energy nuclear physics, which have been emerging rapidly and attracted a tremendous amount of attention in the community.

Probing Saturation Effect in Heavy Meson Pair Correlation in Forward $pA$ Collisions

Forward two-particle angular correlations in $pA$ collisions have long been recognized as a particularly sensitive observable for exploring gluon saturation effects. In the back-to-back regime, two-particle correlations receive substantial contributions from both soft-gluon radiation and saturation effects. In this work, we study heavy meson pair correlation in forward proton-nucleus collisions by incorporating a unified Sudakov resummation for heavy meson pair correlations in the Color Glass Condensate effect theory. Our results are in good agreement with the $Δϕ$ data measured by the LHCb Collaboration for $D^0 \bar D^0$ pairs in forward $pp$ and $pA$ collisions, as well as $J/ψ$ pairs from $b\bar b$ decays in forward $pp$ collisions. Furthermore, we present predictions for $D\bar D$ and $B\bar B$ correlations in the forward rapidity regions at the Large Hadron Collider. A pronounced mass-hierarchy is observed in the nuclear modification factor, $R_{pA}\big|_{m_b}<R_{pA}\big|_{m_c}$, indicating stronger sensitivity to saturation effects at small $x$. As the rapidity increases, the suppression becomes more pronounced while the mass hierarchy remains robust. This study will help us to search for the saturation signal via heavy-meson pair correlations in forward $pA$ collisions.

Quantum entanglement in electron-nucleus collisions: Role of the linearly polarized gluon distribution

We calculate the spin density matrix of a back-to-back quark-antiquark pair inclusively produced in electron-nucleus scattering, taking into account the gluon saturation effect and the linearly polarized gluon distribution. We then investigate concurrence and stabilizer Rényi entropy, quantifying entanglement, Bell-nonlocality, and magic. We find that the linearly polarized gluon distribution tends to enhance the entanglement of a heavy quark pair when the total and relative transverse momenta of the pair are orthogonal.

Studying Maximal Entanglement and Bell Nonlocality at an Electron-Ion Collider

In this paper, we propose to test quantum entanglement and Bell nonlocality at an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). By computing the spin correlations in quark-antiquark pairs produced via photon-gluon fusion, we find that longitudinally polarized photons produce maximal entanglement at leading order, while transversely polarized photons generate significant entanglement near the threshold and in the ultra-relativistic regime. Compared to hadron colliders, the EIC provides a cleaner experimental environment for measuring entanglement through the $γ^\ast g \to q\bar{q}$ channel, offering a strong signal and a promising avenue to verify Bell nonlocality. This study extends entanglement measurements to the EIC, presenting new opportunities to explore the interplay of quantum information phenomena and hadronic physics in the EIC era.

Unified Resummation of Soft Gluon Radiation in Heavy Meson Pair Photoproduction

We develop a unified resummation framework for heavy-meson pair photoproduction that treats soft-gluon radiation in a massive scheme for $|\boldsymbol q| \lesssim m_Q$ and is consistent with the massless limit $m_Q \ll |\boldsymbol q|$, where $\boldsymbol q$ denotes the transverse momentum of the pair and $m_Q$ the quark mass. This framework describes the full correlation regime $|\boldsymbol q| \ll |\boldsymbol P|$, with $\boldsymbol P$ the pair's relative transverse momentum. Next, within the Color Glass Condensate framework, we quantify the impact of soft gluon radiation on two important phenomenological observables, namely, the azimuthal $Δϕ$ correlation and the harmonic asymmetries $\langle \cos(2nϕ_{qP})\rangle$. Our results show that the resummation provides an excellent description of the H1 $Δϕ$ data. We then find that the angular-asymmetry harmonics are sizable and their ratios in $γA$ to $γp$ collisions are highly sensitive to gluon saturation. We further find a clear mass hierarchy in both observables, indicating that heavy-quark masses suppress soft radiation and thereby enhance genuine small-$x$ saturation signals. Our work demonstrates that heavy-quark pair photoproduction provides a quantitative probe of gluon saturation, directly measurable in forthcoming EIC and UPC measurements. Finally, the unified resummation is readily extendable to other processes involving massive particles and jets in both $eA$ and $pA$ collisions.

Extracting Essential Non-perturbative Information in Jet Invariant Mass via the Bayesian Analysis

In this paper, we present a new three-dimensional non-perturbative (NP) function to account for and parameterize the NP contributions in the jet invariant mass spectrum, in addition to the conventional NP mass shift parametrization. By implementing Bayesian analysis on experimental data of the jet invariant mass from exclusive $W/Z+$jet events and inclusive jet events in $pp$ collisions at RHIC and LHC, where collisional energy increases by a factor of up to $65$ from RHIC to LHC, we ensure the analysis covers a wide range of data. For the first time, we simultaneously extract NP contributions from hadronization, initial soft-gluon radiation, and underlying events, based on two different NP prescriptions. We find that the contribution from initial soft-gluon radiation is negligible, and the hadronization effect dominates in the small-$R$ region, while underlying events provide the dominant contribution in the large-$R$ region. Moreover, when only hadronization effects are considered, our results successfully describe the jet mass data measured in $e^+e^-$ collisions, where only hadronization effects are expected to be present. Our work offers quantitative insights into understanding the soft hadronic contribution to jet substructure.

Lighting up the Photon Wigner Distribution via Dilepton Productions

We present a systematic investigation of lepton pair production through photon-photon fusion processes in heavy-ion collisions. It is demonstrated that the dilepton production at a given impact parameter ($b_\perp$) with a fixed transverse momentum imbalance ($q_\perp$) can be factorized into a unified formula in terms of the Wigner photon distribution of heavy nuclei. We show that this framework provides a comprehensive description of all the relevant data from RHIC to the LHC, with a strong evidence that the quasi-real photon can be radiated not only from the nucleus as a whole, standing for the coherent contribution, but also from the sub-structures inside the nucleus, representing the incoherent contribution. Further predictions are made for the anisotropies in the correlations between $q_\perp$, $b_\perp$, and the dilepton transverse momentum ($P_\perp$). This will help us to constrain the photon Wigner distribution which plays a crucial role to study the gluonic matter of nucleus at small-$x$ through the diffractive photoproduction processes in heavy ion collision.

Understanding Gravitational Form Factors with the Weizsäcker-Williams Method

Understanding the internal structure of nucleons and nuclei has been a topic of enduring interest in high-energy physics. Gravitational form factors (GFFs) provide an important portal for us to probe the energy-momentum/mass distribution of nucleons and nuclei. This letter presents the study of the photon and gluon momentum GFFs, also known as the A-GFFs, of relativistic hadrons using the Weizsäcker-Williams method. To begin, we express the photon A-GFFs in terms of charge form factors and discuss the corresponding photon radius. Furthermore, an integral relation between the gluon A-GFF and the Laplacian of dipole scattering amplitude is derived in the small-$x$ framework, and it allows us to unravel the gluon energy momentum distribution inside hadrons through measurements at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider. In addition, we generalize the analysis to study the A-GFF of nuclei and propose employing the nuclear gluon mean square radius, together with the charge distribution, to constrain the neutron distribution for large nuclei. This work provides an interesting perspective into the fundamental structure of high-energy hadrons.

Harmonics of Lepton-Jet Correlations in inclusive and diffractive scatterings

Based on our previous work, we study the harmonic coefficient of both inclusive and diffractive azimuthal angle dependent lepton-jet correlations in Hadron-Electron Ring Accelerator and the future electron-ion collider. Numerical calculations for inclusive and diffractive harmonics and the ratio of harmonics in $e+\text{Au}$~and $e+p$ indicate their strong discriminating power for non-saturation model and saturation model. Additionally, we demonstrate that the t-dependent diffractive harmonics can serve as novel observables for nuclear density profile.

Harmonics of Parton Saturation in Lepton-Jet Correlations at the EIC

Parton saturation is one of the most intriguing phenomena in the high energy nuclear physics research frontier, especially in the upcoming era of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The lepton-jet correlation in deep inelastic scattering provides us with a new gateway to the parton saturation at the EIC. In particular, we demonstrate that azimuthal angle anisotropies of the lepton-jet correlation are sensitive to the strength of the saturation momentum in the EIC kinematic region. In contrast to the predictions based on the collinear framework calculation, significant nuclear modification of the anisotropies is observed when we compare the saturation physics results in e + p and e + Au scatterings. By measuring these harmonic coefficients at the EIC, one can conduct quantitative analysis in different collisional systems and unveil compelling evidence for saturation effects.

Forward Inclusive Jet Productions in pA Collisions

Motivated by recent experimental LHC measurements on the forward inclusive jet productions and based on our previous calculations on forward hadron productions, we calculate single inclusive jet cross-section in $pA$ collisions at forward rapidity within the color glass condensate framework up to the next-to-leading-order. Moreover, with the application of jet algorithm and proper subtraction of the rapidity and collinear divergences, we further demonstrate that the resulting next-to-leading-order hard coefficients are finite. In addition, in order to deal with the large logarithms that can potentially spoil the convergence of the perturbative expansion and improve the reliability of the numerical predictions, we introduce the collinear jet function and the threshold jet function and resum these large logarithms hidden in the hard coefficients.

Semi-inclusive Diffractive Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small-$x$

Inspired by a recent study of Iancu, Mueller and Triantafyllopoulos [1] and earlier papers by Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff [2,3], we propose semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering (SIDDIS) to investigate the gluon tomography in the nucleon and nuclei at small-$x$. The relevant diffractive quark and gluon parton distribution functions (DPDF) can be computed in terms of the color dipole S-matrices in the fundamental and adjoint representations, respectively. Novel correlations from the gluon tomography in the dipole S-matrix can be experimentally studied through the DPDFs in these processes at the future electron-ion collider (EIC).

Azimuthal Angular Asymmetry of Soft Gluon Radiation in Jet Production

We investigate the impact of soft gluon resummation on the azimuthal angle correlation between the total and relative momenta of two energetic final state particles (jets). We show that the initial and final state radiations induce sizable $\cos(ϕ)$ and $\cos (2ϕ)$ asymmetries in single jet and dijet events, respectively. We numerically evaluate the magnitude of these asymmetries for a number of processes in collider experiments, including diffractive dijet and dilepton production in ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC and inclusive dijet production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC. In particular, the $\cos (2ϕ)$ asymmetry of perturbative origin can dominate over the primordial asymmetry due to the linearly polarized gluon distribution.

Pursuing the Precision Study for Color Glass Condensate in Forward Hadron Productions

With the tremendous accomplishments of RHIC and the LHC experiments and the advent of the future Electron-Ion Collider on the horizon, the quest for compelling evidence of the color glass condensate (CGC) has become one of the most aspiring goals in the high energy Quantum Chromodynamics research. Pursuing this question requires developing the precision test of the CGC formalism. By systematically implementing the threshold resummation, we significantly improve the stability of the next-to-leading-order calculation in CGC for forward rapidity hadron productions in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions, especially in the high $p_T$ region, and obtain reliable descriptions of all existing data measured at RHIC and the LHC across all $p_T$ regions. Consequently, this technique can pave the way for the precision studies of the CGC next-to-leading-order predictions by confronting them with a large amount of precise data.

Anisotropy in Dijet Production in Exclusive and Inclusive Processes

We investigate the effect of soft gluon radiations on the azimuthal angle correlation between the total and relative momenta of two jets in inclusive and exclusive dijet processes. We show that the final state effect induces a sizable $\cos(2ϕ)$ anisotropy due to gluon emissions near the jet cones. The phenomenological consequences of this observation are discussed for various collider experiments, including diffractive processes in ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions, inclusive and diffractive dijet production at the EIC, and inclusive dijet in $pp$ and $AA$ collisions at the LHC.

Exploring the Collective Phenomenon at the Electron-Ion Collider

Based on rare fluctuations in strong interactions, we argue that there is a strong physical resemblance between the high multiplicity events in photo-nuclear collisions and those in $pA$ collisions, in which interesting long range collective phenomena are discovered. This indicates that the collectivity can also be studied in certain kinematic region of the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) where the incoming virtual photon has a sufficiently long lifetime. Using a model in the Color Glass Condensate formalism, we first show that the initial state interactions can explain the recent ATLAS azimuthal correlation results measured in the photo-nuclear collisions, and then we provide quantitative predictions for the long range correlations in $eA$ collisions in the EIC regime. With the unprecedented precision and the ability to change the size of the collisional system, the high luminosity EIC will open a new window to explore the physical mechanism responsible for the collective phenomenon.
