Cosmology in the presence of multiple light moduli

The generic expectation in string/supergravity models is that there are multiple moduli fields with masses of the order of the supersymmetry breaking scale. We study the cosmology that arises as a result of vacuum misalignment of these moduli fields (in contrast to previous studies which mostly focussed on the single modulus case). We show that the dark radiation produced from the heavier moduli undergoes significant dilution. This happens even if there is a small splitting between the masses of the lightest and the heavier moduli. On the other hand, in the absence of fast annihilation processes decay of heavier moduli generically leads to overproduction of dark matter. We discuss a scenario where the problem can be addressed with a prompt dark matter annihilation to dark radiation. This can lead to realistic dark matter abundances, and the additional dark radiation produced as a result of this mechanism undergoes sufficient dilution as long as the annihilation is prompt.

Categorisation and Detection of Dark Matter Candidates from String/M-theory Hidden Sectors

We study well-motivated dark matter candidates arising from weakly-coupled hidden sectors in compactified string/$M$-theory. Imposing generic top-down constraints greatly restricts allowed candidates. By considering the possible mechanisms for achieving the correct dark matter relic density, we compile categories of viable dark matter candidates and annihilation mediators. We consider the case where supersymmetry breaking occurs via moduli stabilisation and is gravitationally mediated to the visible and other hidden sectors, without assuming sequestering of the sector in which supersymmetry is broken. We find that in this case, weakly-coupled hidden sectors only allow for fermionic dark matter. Additionally, most of the mechanisms for obtaining the full relic density only allow for a gauge boson mediator, such as a dark $Z'$. Given these considerations, we study the potential for discovering or constraining the allowed parameter space given current and future direct detection experiments, and direct production at the LHC. We also present a model of a hidden sector which would contain a satisfactory dark matter candidate.

The Spectrum of the Axion Dark Sector

Axions arise in many theoretical extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, in particular the "string axiverse". If the axion masses, $m_a$, and (effective) decay constants, $f_a$, lie in specific ranges, then axions contribute to the cosmological dark matter and dark energy densities. We compute the background cosmological (quasi-)observables for models with a large number of axion fields, $n_{\rm ax}\sim \mathcal{O}(10-100)$, with the masses and decay constants drawn from statistical distributions. This reduces the number of parameters from $2n_{\rm ax}$ to a small number of "hyperparameters". We consider a number of distributions, from those motivated purely by statistical considerations, to those where the structure is specified according to a class of M-theory models. Using Bayesian methods we are able to constrain the hyperparameters of the distributions. In some cases the hyperparameters can be related to string theory, e.g. constraining the number ratio of axions to moduli, or the typical decay constant scale needed to provide the correct relic densities. Our methodology incorporates the use of both random matrix theory and Bayesian networks.

Neutrino mass from M Theory SO(10)

We study the origin of neutrino mass from $SO(10)$ arising from $M$ Theory compactified on a $G_2$-manifold. This is linked to the problem of the breaking of the extra $U(1)$ gauge group, in the $SU(5)\times U(1)$ subgroup of $SO(10)$, which we show can achieved via a (generalised) Kolda-Martin mechanism. The resulting neutrino masses arise from a combination of the seesaw mechanism and induced R-parity breaking contributions. The rather complicated neutrino mass matrix is analysed for one neutrino family and it is shown how phenomenologically acceptable neutrino masses can emerge.

The lightest visible-sector supersymmetric particle is likely to be unstable

We argue, based on typical properties of known solutions of string/$M$-theory, that the lightest supersymmetric particle of the visible sector will not be stable. In other words, dark matter is {\em not} a particle with Standard Model quantum numbers, such as a WIMP. The argument is simple and based on the typical occurrence of a) hidden sectors, b) interactions between the Standard Model (visible) sector and these hidden sectors, and c) the lack of an argument against massive neutral hidden sector particles being lighter than the lightest visible supersymmetric particle. These conclusions do not rely on arguments such as R-parity violation.

SO(10) Grand Unification in M theory on a G2 manifold

We consider Grand Unified Theories based on $SO(10)$ which originate from string/$M$ theory on $G_2$ manifolds or Calabi-Yau spaces with discrete symmetries. In this framework we are naturally led to a novel solution of the doublet-triplet splitting problem previously considered by Dvali which involves an extra vector-like Standard Model family and light, but weakly coupled colour triplets. These additional states are predicted to be accessible at the LHC and also induce R-parity violation. Gauge coupling unification occurs with a larger GUT coupling.

Prospects for observing charginos and neutralinos at a 100 TeV proton-proton collider

We investigate the prospects for discovering charginos and neutralinos at a future $pp$ collider with $\sqrt{s} = 100$ TeV. We focus on models where squarks and sleptons are decoupled -- as motivated by the LHC data. Our initial study is based on models where Higgsinos form the main component of the LSP and $W$-inos compose the heavier chargino states ($M_2 > μ$), though it is straightforward to consider the reverse situation also. We show that in such scenarios $W$-inos decay into $W^\pm$, $Z$ and $h$ plus neutralinos almost universally. In the $W Z$ channel we compare signal and background in various kinematical distributions. We design simple but effective signal regions for the trilepton channel and evaluate discovery reach and exclusion limits. Assuming 3000 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, $W$-inos could be discovered (excluded) up to 1.1 (1.8) TeV if the spectrum is not compressed.

R-Parity Conservation from a Top Down Perspective

Motivated by results from the LHC and dark matter searches, we study the possibility of phenomenologically viable R-parity violation in $SU(5)$ GUT models from a top-down point of view. We show that in contrast to the more model dependent bounds on the proton lifetime, the limits on neutrino masses provide a robust, stringent and complementary constraint on all $SU(5)$ GUT-based R-parity violating models. Focusing on well-motivated string/$M$ theory GUT frameworks with mechanisms for doublet-triplet splitting and a solution to the $μ/Bμ$ problems, we show that imposing the neutrino mass bounds implies that R-parity violation is disfavored. The arguments can also be generalized to minimal $SO(10)$ GUTs. An experimental observation of R-parity violation would, therefore, disfavor such classes of top-down GUT models.

Kahler Independence of the G2-MSSM

The G2-MSSM is a model of particle physics coupled to moduli fields with interesting phenomenology both for colliders and astrophysical experiments. In this paper we consider a more general model - whose moduli Kahler potential is a completely arbitrary G2-holonomy Kahler potential and whose matter Kahler potential is also more general. We prove that the vacuum structure and spectrum of BSM particles is largely unchanged in this much more general class of theories. In particular, gaugino masses are still supressed relative to the gravitino mass and moduli masses. We also consider the effects of higher order corrections to the matter Kahler potential and find a connection between the nature of the LSP and flavor effects.

Identifying Multi-Top Events from Gluino Decay at the LHC

We study the LHC signal of a light gluino whose cascade decay is dominated by channels involving top, and, sometimes, bottom quarks. This is a generic signature for a number of supersymmetry breaking scenarios considered recently, where the squarks are heavier than gauginos. Third generation final states generically dominate since third generation squarks are typically somewhat lighter in these models. At the LHC we demonstrate that early discovery is possible due to the existence of multi-lepton multi-bottom final states which have fairly low Standard Model background. We find that the best discovery channel is 'same sign dilepton'. The relative decay branching ratios into tt, tb and bb states carry important information about the underlying model. Although reconstruction will yield evidence for the existence of top quarks in the event, we demonstrate that identifying multiple top quarks suffers from low efficiency and large combinatorial background, due to the large number of final state particles. We propose a fitting method which takes advantage of excesses in a large number of channels. We demonstrate such a method will allow us to extract information about decay branching ratios with moderate integrated luminosities. In addition, the method also gives an upper bound on the gluino production cross section and an estimate of the gluino mass.

Non-thermal Dark Matter and the Moduli Problem in String Frameworks

We address the cosmological moduli/gravitino problems and the issue of too little thermal but excessive non-thermal dark matter from the decays of moduli. The main examples we study are the G2-MSSM models arising from M theory compactifications, which allow for a precise calculation of moduli decay rates and widths. We find that the late decaying moduli satisfy both BBN constraints and avoid the gravitino problem. The non-thermal production of wino LSPs, which is a prediction of G2-MSSM models, gives a relic density of about the right order of magnitude.

Explaining the Electroweak Scale and Stabilizing Moduli in M Theory

In a recent paper \cite{Acharya:2006ia} it was shown that in $M$ theory vacua without fluxes, all moduli are stabilized by the effective potential and a stable hierarchy is generated, consistent with standard gauge unification. This paper explains the results of \cite{Acharya:2006ia} in more detail and generalizes them, finding an essentially unique de Sitter (dS) vacuum under reasonable conditions. One of the main phenomenological consequences is a prediction which emerges from this entire class of vacua: namely gaugino masses are significantly suppressed relative to the gravitino mass. We also present evidence that, for those vacua in which the vacuum energy is small, the gravitino mass, which sets all the superpartner masses, is automatically in the TeV - 100 TeV range.

The $G_2$-MSSM - An $M$ Theory motivated model of Particle Physics

We continue our study of the low energy implications of $M$ theory vacua on $G_2$ manifolds, undertaken in \cite{Acharya:2007rc,Acharya:2006ia}, where it was shown that the moduli can be stabilized and a TeV scale generated, with the Planck scale as the only dimensionful input. A well-motivated phenomenological model - the $G_2$-MSSM, can be naturally defined within the above framework. In this paper, we study some of the important phenomenological features of the $G_2$-MSSM. In particular, the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters and the superpartner spectrum are computed. The $G_2$-MSSM generically gives rise to light gauginos and heavy scalars with wino LSPs when one tunes the cosmological constant. Electroweak symmetry breaking is present but fine-tuned. The $G_2$-MSSM is also naturally consistent with precision gauge coupling unification. The phenomenological consequences for cosmology and collider physics of the $G_2$-MSSM will be reported in more detail soon.

Toric Kahler metrics and AdS_5 in ring-like co-ordinates

Stationary, supersymmetric supergravity solutions in five dimensions have Kahler metrics on the four-manifold orthogonal to the orbits of a time-like Killing vector. We show that an explicit class of toric Kahler metrics provide a unified framework in which to describe both the asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS solutions. The Darboux co-ordinates used for the local description turn out to be ''ring-like.'' We conclude with an Ansatz for studying the existence of supersymmetric black rings in AdS.

Fixing Moduli in Exact Type IIA Flux Vacua

Type IIA flux compactifications with O6-planes have been argued from a four dimensional effective theory point of view to admit stable, moduli free solutions. We discuss in detail the ten dimensional description of such vacua and present exact solutions in the case when the O6-charge is smoothly distributed. In the localised case, the solution is a half-flat, non-Calabi-Yau metric. Finally, using the ten dimensional description we show how all moduli are stabilised and reproduce precisely the results of de Wolfe et al.

Suppressing Proton Decay in Theories with Localised Fermions

We calculate the contribution to the proton decay amplitude from Kaluza-Klein lepto-quarks in theories with extra dimensions, localised fermions and gauge fields which propagate in the bulk. Such models naturally occur within the context of M-theory. In SU(5) models we show that carefully including all such modes gives a distinctive pattern of decays through various channels including a strong suppression of decays into neutrinos or right handed positrons. By contrast there is no such suppression for SO(10).
