QCD String Axions and $M$-theory

In $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory without matter, there exist stable long electric fluxtube strings which carry a 1-form symmetry charge. Over the past decade or so, there has been increasing evidence from lattice calculations that the worldsheet theories of such QCD strings contain a massive pseudoscalar (axion), at least when $N\geq 3$. This has so far been puzzling from the perspective of holographic realizations of strings in confining gauge theories. In this note, we will show how such axions appear naturally in the realization of 4D $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super-Yang-Mills (SYM) from $M$-theory spacetimes in which the extra dimensions are modeled by certain complete metrics of $G_2$-holonomy. This picture predicts that QCD string axions exist only if the gauge group is $SU(N\geq 3)$, $SO(4N+2)$, or $E_6$ (or a quotient/double-cover thereof), and is absent from the spectrum of stable QCD strings if the gauge group is $SU(2)$, $SO(2N+1)$, $SO(4N)$, $Sp(N)$, or $E_7$. We argue why we expect this pattern to persist for non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills strings, at least for large $N$, something which could be tested in future lattice studies of QCD strings for gauge algebras of B, C, D, and E-type.

On Classifying HyperKähler Kummer 8-Orbifolds

HyperKähler spaces, including manifolds, orbifolds and conical singularities play an important role in superstring/$M$-theory and gauge theories as well as in differential and algebraic geometry. In this paper we provide hundreds of new examples of compact hyperKähler orbifolds of Kummer type $T^8/G$, where $T^8$ is the maximal torus of the compact Lie group $E_8$ and $G$ a finite group of isometries whose holonomies form a subgroup of the Weyl group of $E_8$. We show that, out of all of these examples, the only orbifolds whose singularities have a known holomorphic symplectic resolution lead to manifolds diffeomorphic to the two currently known examples of compact hyperKähler 8-manifolds. We also demonstrate that these methods can, when combined with theorems of Joyce, be extended to construct potentially new manifolds of $\operatorname{SU}(4)$- and $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$- holonomy. All of these examples give rise to new vacua of string/$M$-theory in two/three dimensions.

Confinement in Five Dimensions

Five dimensional super conformal field theories can be studied using their geometric realisation as a limit of $M$-theory on a metrically conical Calabi-Yau threefold. We utilise this framework to investigate the phases of such theories that arise by varying the couplings away from the conformal point. We demonstrate that many 5d SCFTs, including strongly coupled gauge theories, have couplings giving rise to massive, confining vacua with confining strings and corresponding unbroken 1-form symmetries. The simplest examples arise by considering the parameter space of {\it complete} Ricci flat metrics on discrete quotients of the standard conifold singularity. Varying other couplings produces coupled 5d SCFTs interacting via massive BPS instanton particle states.

Ricci Flat Metrics, Flat Connections and $G_{2}$-Manifolds

Inspired by considerations in $M$-theory, we prove the equivalence between the moduli spaces of (suitably complexified) torsion free $G_{2}$-structures on 7-manifolds which are families of hyperKähler ALE 4-manifolds fibered over compact flat 3-manifolds $T^{3}/K$ and certain moduli spaces of flat $G^{\mathbb{C}}_{ADE}$ connections on $T^{3}/K$.

Coulomb and Higgs Phases of $G_2$-manifolds

Ricci flat manifolds of special holonomy are a rich framework as models of the extra dimensions in string/$M$-theory. At special points in vacuum moduli space, special kinds of singularities occur and demand a physical interpretation. In this paper we show that the topologically distinct $G_2$-holonomy manifolds arising from desingularisations of codimension four orbifold singularities due to Joyce and Karigiannis correspond physically to Coulomb and Higgs phases of four dimensional gauge theories. The results suggest generalisations of the Joyce-Karigiannis construction to arbitrary ADE-singularities and higher order twists which we explore in detail in explicitly solvable local models. These models allow us to derive an isomorphism between moduli spaces of Ricci flat metrics on these non-compact $G_2$-manifolds and flat ADE-connections on compact flat 3-manifolds which we establish explicitly for $\operatorname{SU}(n)$.

Junctions, Edge Modes, and $G_2$-Holonomy Orbifolds

One of the general strategies for realizing a wide class of interacting QFTs is via junctions and intersections of higher-dimensional bulk theories. In the context of string/M-theory, this includes many $D > 4$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) coupled to an IR free bulk. Gauging the flavor symmetries of these theories and allowing position dependent gauge couplings provides a general strategy for realizing novel higher-dimensional junctions of theories coupled to localized edge modes. Here, we show that M-theory on singular, asymptotically conical $G_2$-holonomy orbifolds provides a general template for realizing strongly coupled 5D bulk theories with 4D $\mathcal{N} = 1$ edge modes. This geometric approach also shows how bulk generalized symmetries are inherited in the boundary system.

Heterotic Strings on ${\mathbb T^3}/{\mathbb Z_2}$, Nikulin involutions and M-theory

We first describe the low energy dynamics of ten dimensional heterotic supergravity compactified on the smooth, flat 3-manifold ${\mathbb T^3}/{\mathbb Z_2}$, without supersymmetry, and explain how it arises from flat heterotic gauge fields. The semi-classical theory has both Coulomb and Higgs branches of non-supersymmetric vacua. We then give an exact worldsheet description as asymmetric orbifolds of $\mathbb T^3$, where the orbifold generator involves a Nikulin non-symplectic involution $θ$ of the even self-dual lattice $Γ_{(19,3)}$. Along the way we briefly compare our findings with M-theory on $\text{K3}/θ$. Our construction gives a novel CFT description of the semi-classical field theory moduli space. In particular, the Wilson line parameters in the lattice $I\subset Γ_{(19,3)}$ of signature $(19-s,1)$ which is invariant under $θ$, and in its orthogonal complement $N$, correspond respectively to Coulomb and Higgs branch moduli. There is a rich pattern of transitions amongst Higgs and Coulomb branches which we describe using the worldsheet theory.

Non-Perturbative Heterotic Duals of M-Theory on $G_{2}$ Orbifolds

By fibering the duality between the $E_{8}\times E_{8}$ heterotic string on $T^{3}$ and M-theory on K3, we study heterotic duals of M-theory compactified on $G_{2}$ orbifolds of the form $T^{7}/\mathbb{Z}_{2}^{3}$. While the heterotic compactification space is straightforward, the description of the gauge bundle is subtle, involving the physics of point-like instantons on orbifold singularities. By comparing the gauge groups of the dual theories, we deduce behavior of a "half-$G_{2}$" limit, which is the M-theory analog of the stable degeneration limit of F-theory. The heterotic backgrounds exhibit point-like instantons that are localized on pairs of orbifold loci, similar to the "gauge-locking" phenomenon seen in Hořava-Witten compactifications. In this way, the geometry of the $G_{2}$ orbifold is translated to bundle data in the heterotic background. While the instanton configuration looks surprising from the perspective of the $E_{8}\times E_{8}$ heterotic string, it may be understood as T-dual $\text{Spin}(32)/\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ instantons along with winding shifts originating in a dual Type I compactification.

New $G_2$-conifolds in $M$-theory and their Field Theory Interpretation

A recent theorem of Foscolo-Haskins-Nordström which constructs complete $G_2$-holonomy orbifolds from circle bundles over Calabi-Yau cones can be utilised to construct and investigate a large class of generalisations of the $M$-theory flop transition. We see that in many cases a UV perturbative gauge theory appears to have an infrared dual described by a smooth $G_2$-holonomy background in $M$-theory. Various physical checks of this proposal are carried out affirmatively.

$T^3$-Invariant Heterotic Hull-Strominger Solutions

We consider the heterotic string on Calabi-Yau manifolds admitting a Strominger-Yau-Zaslow fibration. Upon reducing the system in the $T^3$-directions, the Hermitian Yang-Mills conditions can then be reinterpreted as a complex flat connection on $\mathbb{R}^3$ satisfying a certain co-closure condition. We give a number of abelian and non-abelian examples, and also compute the back-reaction on the geometry through the non-trivial $α'$-corrected heterotic Bianchi identity, which includes an important correction to the equations for the complex flat connection. These are all new local solutions to the Hull-Strominger system on $T^3\times\mathbb{R}^3$. We also propose a method for computing the spectrum of certain non-abelian models, in close analogy with the Morse-Witten complex of the abelian models.

Stringy Tachyonic Instabilities of Non-Supersymmetric Ricci Flat Backgrounds

Superstring/M-theory compactified on compact Ricci flat manifolds have recently been conjectured to exhibit instabilities whenever the metrics do not have special holonomy. We use worldsheet conformal field theory to investigate instabilities of Type II superstring theories on compact, Ricci flat, spin 3-manifolds including a worldsheet description of their spin structures. The instabilities are signalled by the appearance of stringy tachyons at small radius and a negative (1-loop) vacuum energy density at large radius. We briefly discuss the extension to higher dimensions.

A circle quotient of a $G_2$ cone

A study is made of $R^6$ as a singular quotient of the conical space $R^+\times CP^3$ with holonomy $G_2$ with respect to an obvious action by $U(1)$ on $CP^3$ with fixed points. Closed expressions are found for the induced metric, and for both the curvature and symplectic 2-forms characterizing the reduction. All these tensors are invariant by a diagonal action of $SO(3)$ on $R^6$, which can be used effectively to describe the resulting geometrical features.

Supersymmetry, Ricci Flat Manifolds and the String Landscape

A longstanding question in superstring/$M$ theory is does it predict supersymmetry below the string scale? We formulate and discuss a necessary condition for this to be true; this is the mathematical conjecture that all stable, compact Ricci flat manifolds have special holonomy in dimensions below eleven. Almost equivalent is the proposal that the landscape of all geometric, stable, string/$M$ theory compactifications to Minkowski spacetime (at leading order) are supersymmetric. For simply connected manifolds, we collect together a number of physically relevant mathematical results, emphasising some key outstanding problems and perhaps less well known results. For non-simply connected, non-supersymmetric Ricci flat manifolds we demonstrate that many cases suffer from generalised Witten bubble of nothing instabilities.

Counting Associatives in Compact $G_2$ Orbifolds

We describe a class of compact $G_2$ orbifolds constructed from non-symplectic involutions of K3 surfaces. Within this class, we identify a model for which there are infinitely many associative submanifolds contributing to the effective superpotential of M-theory compactifications. Under a chain of dualities, these can be mapped to F-theory on a Calabi-Yau fourfold, and we find that they are dual to an example studied by Donagi, Grassi and Witten. Finally, we give two different descriptions of our main example and the associative submanifolds as a twisted connected sum.

Hidden Sectors in String Theory: Kinetic Mixings, Fifth Forces and Quintessence

Light moduli fields in string compactifications can have interesting implications for particle physics and cosmology. Fifth force bounds impose stringent constraints on the interactions of such moduli with the visible sector. To be consistent with the bounds, they need to be part of hidden sectors which interact with the Standard Model with weaker-than-Planck suppressed interactions. We consider scenarios in which the visible sector degrees of freedom are localised in the compactification and light moduli arise as closed string degrees of freedom associated with hidden sectors which are geometrically separated (in the extra-dimensions) from the Standard Model. Kinetic mixings lead to interactions between the moduli and the visible sector - we compute these using Kaehler potentials of string/M-theory compactifications. We argue that in general these interactions provide a lower bound on the strength of the interactions between the moduli and the visible sector. The interactions scale with inverse powers of the volume of the compactification, thus fifth force bounds can be translated to lower bounds on the volume of the extra-dimensions. We find that compactification volumes have to be large to evade the bounds. This imposes interesting constraints on quintessence model building in string theory. Our results for the strength of the interactions can also be used to quantify the fine-tuning necessary for the stability of the potential of a light modulus against quantum corrections involving visible sector loops.

Glueball dark matter in non-standard cosmologies

Hidden sector glueball dark matter is well motivated by string theory, compactifications of which often have extra gauge groups uncoupled to the visible sector. We study the dynamics of glueballs in theories with a period of late time primordial matter domination followed by a low final reheating temperature due to a gravitationally coupled modulus. Compared to scenarios with a high reheating temperature, the required relic abundance is possible with higher hidden sector confinement scales, and less extreme differences in the entropy densities of the hidden and visible sectors. Both of these can occur in string derived models, and relatively light moduli are helpful for obtaining viable phenomenology. We also study the effects of hidden sector gluinos. In some parts of parameter space these can be the dominant dark matter component, while in others their abundance is much smaller than that of glueballs. Finally, we show that heavy glueballs produced from energy in the hidden sector prior to matter domination can have the correct relic abundance if they are sufficiently long lived.

The Axiverse induced Dark Radiation Problem

The string/$M$ theory Axiverse -- a plethora of very light Axion Like Particles (ALPs) with a vast range of masses -- is arguably a generic prediction of string/$M$ theory. String/$M$ theory also tends to predict that the early Universe is dominated by moduli fields. When the heavy moduli decay, before nucleosynthesis, they produce dark radiation in the form of relativistic ALPs. Generically one estimates that the number of relativistic species grows with the number of axions in the Axiverse, in contradiction to the observations that $N_{eff} \leq 4$. We explain this problem in detail and suggest some possible solutions to it. The simplest solution requires that the lightest modulus decays only into its own axion superpartner plus Standard Model particles and this severely constrains the moduli Kahler potential and mass matrix.

Bounds on Scalar Masses in Theories of Moduli Stabilization

In recent years it has been realised that pre-BBN decays of moduli can be a significant source of dark matter production, giving a `non-thermal WIMP miracle' and substantially reduced fine-tuning in cosmological axion physics. We study moduli masses and sharpen the claim that moduli dominated the pre-BBN Universe. We conjecture that in any string theory with stabilized moduli there will be at least one modulus field whose mass is of order (or less than) the gravitino mass. Cosmology then generically requires the gravitino mass not be less than about 30 TeV and the cosmological history of the Universe is non-thermal prior to BBN. Stable LSP's produced in these decays can account for the observed dark matter if they are `wino-like.' We briefly consider implications for the LHC, rare decays, and dark matter direct detection and point out that these results could prove challenging for models attempting to realize gauge mediation in string theory.
