Essential self-adjointness and the $L^2$-Liouville property

We discuss connections between the essential self-adjointness of a symmetric operator and the constancy of functions which are in the kernel of the adjoint of the operator. We then illustrate this relationship in the case of Laplacians on both manifolds and graphs. Furthermore, we discuss the Green's function and when it gives a non-constant harmonic function which is square integrable.

Combinatorial Ricci flows and the hyperbolization of a class of compact 3-manifolds

We prove that for a compact 3-manifold M with boundary admitting an ideal triangulation T with valence at least 10 at all edges, there exists a unique complete hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary, so that T is isotopic to a geometric decomposition of M. Our approach is to use a variant of the combinatorial Ricci flow introduced by Luo [Luo05] for pseudo 3-manifolds. In this case, we prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to the hyperbolic metric exponentially fast.

Steklov Eigenvalue Problem on Subgraphs of Integer Lattices

We study the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on a finite subgraph of the integer lattice Zn. We estimate the first n+1 eigenvalues using the number of vertices of the subgraph. As a corollary, we prove that the first non-trivial eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator tends to zero as the number of vertices of the subgraph tends to infinity.

Combinatorial Ricci flows with applications to the hyperbolization of cusped 3-manifolds

In this paper, we adopt combinatorial Ricci curvature flow methods to study the existence of cusped hyperbolic structure on 3-manifolds with torus boundary. For general pseudo 3-manifolds, we prove the long-time existence and the uniqueness for the extended Ricci flow for decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metrics. We prove that the extended Ricci flow converges to a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric if and only if there exists a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric of zero Ricci curvature. If it is the case, the flow converges exponentially fast. These results apply for cusped hyperbolic structure on 3-manifolds via ideal triangulation.

Universal inequalities for Dirichlet eigenvalues on discrete groups

We prove universal inequalities for Laplacian eigenvalues with Dirichlet boundary conditions on subsets of certain discrete groups. The study of universal inequalities on Riemannian manifolds was initiated by Weyl, Polya, Yau, and others. Here we focus on a version by Cheng and Yang. Specifically, we prove Yang-type universal inequalities for Cayley graphs of finitely generated amenable groups, as well as for the d-regular tree (simple random walk on the free group).

Discrete harmonic functions on infinite penny graphs

In this paper, we study discrete harmonic functions on infinite penny graphs. For an infinite penny graph with bounded facial degree, we prove that the volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality hold, which yields the Harnack inequality for positive harmonic functions. Moreover, we prove that the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions, or ancient solutions of the heat equation, with bounded growth rate has finite dimensional property.

Graphs on surfaces with positive Forman curvature or corner curvature

On one hand, we study the class of graphs on surfaces, satisfying tessellation properties, with positive Forman curvature on each edge. Via medial graphs, we provide a new proof for the finiteness of the class, and give a complete classification. On the other hand, we classify the class of graphs on surfaces with positive corner curvature.

Ancient caloric functions on graphs with unbounded Laplacians

We study ancient solutions of polynomial growth to both continuous-time and discrete-time heat equations on graphs with unbounded Laplacians. We generalize Colding and Minicozzi's theorem [CM19] on manifolds, and the result [Hua19] on graphs with normalized Laplacians to the setting of graphs with unbounded Laplacians: For a graph admitting an intrinsic metric, which has polynomial volume growth, the dimension of the space of ancient solutions of polynomial growth is bounded by the dimension of harmonic functions with the same growth up to some factor.

A curvature notion for planar graphs stable under planar duality

Woess \cite{Woess98} introduced a curvature notion on the set of edges of a planar graph, called $Ψ$-curvature in our paper, which is stable under the planar duality. We study geometric and combinatorial properties for the class of infinite planar graphs with non-negative $Ψ$-curvature. By using the discharging method, we prove that for such an infinite graph the number of vertices (resp. faces) of degree $k,$ except $k=3,4$ or $6,$ is finite. As a main result, we prove that for an infinite planar graph with non-negative $Ψ$-curvature the sum of the number of vertices of degree at least $8$ and the number of faces of degree at least $8$ is at most one.

Circle patterns on surfaces of finite topological type

This paper investigates circle patterns with obtuse exterior intersection angles on surfaces of finite topological type. We characterise the images of the curvature maps and establish several equivalent conditions regarding long time behaviors of Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flows for these patterns. As consequences, several generalizations of circle pattern theorem are obtained. Moreover, our approach suggests a computational method to find the desired circle patterns.

Dimensional bounds for ancient caloric functions on graphs

We study ancient solutions of polynomial growth to heat equations on graphs, and extend Colding and Minicozzi's theorem [CM19] on manifolds to graphs: For a graph of polynomial volume growth, the dimension of the space of ancient solutions of polynomial growth is bounded by the product of the growth degree and the dimension of harmonic functions with the same growth.

Dirichlet p-Laplacian eigenvalues and Cheeger constants on symmetric graphs

In this paper, we study eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $p$-Laplacians with Dirichlet boundary condition on graphs. We characterize the first eigenfunction (and the maximum eigenfunction for a bipartite graph) via the sign condition. By the uniqueness of the first eigenfunction of $p$-Laplacian, as $p\to 1,$ we identify the Cheeger constant of a symmetric graph with that of the quotient graph. By this approach, we calculate various Cheeger constants of spherically symmetric graphs.

A note on limit of first eigenfunctions of $p$-Laplacian on graphs

We study the limit of first eigenfunctions of (discrete) $p$-Laplacian on a finite subset of a graph with Dirichlet boundary condition, as $p\to 1.$ We prove that up to a subsequence, they converge to a summation of characteristic functions of Cheeger cuts of the graph. We give an example to show that the limit may not be a characteristic function of a single Cheeger cut.

The set of vertices with positive curvature in a planar graph with nonnegative curvature

In this paper, we give the sharp upper bound for the number of vertices with positive curvature in a planar graph with nonnegative combinatorial curvature. Based on this, we show that the automorphism group of a planar---possibly infinite---graph with nonnegative combinatorial curvature and positive total curvature is a finite group, and give an upper bound estimate for the order of the group.

Liouville theorem for bounded harmonic functions on manifolds and graphs satisfying non-negative curvature dimension condition

Brighton [Bri13] proved the Liouville theorem for bounded harmonic functions on weighted manifolds satisfying non-negative curvature dimension condition, i.e. $CD(0,\infty).$ In this paper, we provide a new proof of this result by using the reverse Poincaré inequality. Moreover, we adopt this approach to prove the Liouville theorem for bounded harmonic functions on graphs satisfying the $CD(0,\infty)$ condition.
