Massive 1D Dirac Line, Solitons and Reversible Manipulation on the Surface of a Prototype Obstructed Atomic Insulator, Silicon

Topologically trivial insulators can be classified into atomic insulators (AIs) and obstructed atomic insulators (OAIs) depending on whether the Wannier charge centers are localized or not at spatial positions occupied by atoms. An OAI can possess unusual properties such as surface states along certain crystalline surfaces, which advantageously appear in materials with much larger bulk energy gap than topological insulators, making them more attractive for potential applications. In this work, we show that a well-known crystal, silicon (Si) is a model OAI, which naturally explains some of Si's unusual properties such as its famous (111) surface states. On this surface, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we reveal sharp quasi-1D massive Dirac line dispersions; we also observe, using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS), topological solitons at the interface of the two atomic chains. Remarkably, we show that the different chain domains can be reversibly switched at the nanometer scale, suggesting the application potential in ultra-high density storage devices.

Temperature-Driven Topological Transition in 1T'-MoTe2

The topology of Weyl semimetals requires the existence of unique surface states. Surface states have been visualized in spectroscopy measurements, but their connection to the topological character of the material remains largely unexplored. 1T'-MoTe2, presents a unique opportunity to study this connection. This material undergoes a phase transition at 240K that changes the structure from orthorhombic (putative Weyl semimetal) to monoclinic (trivial metal), while largely maintaining its bulk electronic structure. Here we show from temperature-dependent quasiparticle interference measurements that this structural transition also acts as a topological switch for surface states in 1T'-MoTe2. At low temperature, we observe strong quasiparticle scattering, consistent with theoretical predictions and photoemission measurements for the surface states in this material. In contrast, measurements performed at room temperature show the complete absence of the scattering wavevectors associated with the trivial surface states. These distinct quasiparticle scattering behaviors show that 1T'-MoTe2 is ideal for separating topological and trivial electronic phenomena via temperature dependent measurements.

Spin-Singlet Quantum Hall States and Jack Polynomials with a Prescribed Symmetry

We show that a large class of bosonic spin-singlet Fractional Quantum Hall model wave-functions and their quasi-hole excitations can be written in terms of Jack polynomials with a prescribed symmetry. Our approach describes new spin-singlet quantum Hall states at filling fraction nu = 2k/(2r-1) and generalizes the (k,r) spin-polarized Jack polynomial states. The NASS and Halperin spin singlet states emerge as specific cases of our construction. The polynomials express many-body states which contain configurations obtained from a root partition through a generalized squeezing procedure involving spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The corresponding generalized Pauli principle for root partitions is obtained, allowing for counting of the quasihole states. We also extract the central charge and quasihole scaling dimension, and propose a conjecture for the underlying CFT of the (k, r) spin-singlet Jack states.

Geometry of the 3-Qubit State, Entanglement and Division Algebras

We present a generalization to 3-qubits of the standard Bloch sphere representation for a single qubit and of the 7-dimensional sphere representation for 2 qubits presented in Mosseri {\it et al.}\cite{Mosseri2001}. The Hilbert space of the 3-qubit system is the 15-dimensional sphere $S^{15}$, which allows for a natural (last) Hopf fibration with $S^8$ as base and $S^7$ as fiber. A striking feature is, as in the case of 1 and 2 qubits, that the map is entanglement sensitive, and the two distinct ways of un-entangling 3 qubits are naturally related to the Hopf map. We define a quantity that measures the degree of entanglement of the 3-qubit state. Conjectures on the possibility to generalize the construction for higher qubit states are also discussed.

Nearly Insulating Strongly Correlated Systems: Gossamer Superconductors and Metals

Recently a new phenomenological Hamiltonian was proposed to describe the superconducting cuprates in which correlations and on-site Coulomb repulsion are introduced by partial Gutzwiller projection. This Gossamer Hamiltonian has an exact ground state and differs from the t-J and Hubbard Hamiltonians in possessing a powerful attractive interaction among electrons responsible for Cooper pairing in the d-wave channel. It is a faithful description for a superconductor with strong on-site electronic repulsion. The superconducting tunneling gap remains intact and despite on-site repulsion. Near half-filling the Gossamer superconductor with strong repulsion has suppressed photoemission intensities and superfluid density, is unstable toward an antiferromagnetic insulator and possesses an incipient Mott-Hubbard gap. The Gossamer technique can be applied to metallic ground states thus possibly serving as an apt description of strongly correlated metals. Such a Gossamer metallic phase, just as the Gossamer superconducting one, becomes arbitrarily hard to differentiate from an insulator as one turns the Coulomb correlations up near half-filling. Both the metallic and superconducting states undergo a quantum phase transition to an antiferromagnetic insulator as one increases the on-site Coulomb repulsion. In the Gossamer model we reach the critical point at half-filling by fully projecting out the double occupancy. Such a critical point might be the Anderson Resonating Valence bond state.

Dissipationless Spin Current in Anisotropic p-Doped Semiconductors

Recently, dissipationless spin current has been predicted for the p-doped semiconductors with spin-orbit coupling. Here we investigate the effect of spherical symmetry breaking on the dissipationless spin current, and obtain values of the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity for realistic semiconductor band structures with cubic symmetry.

Spin Current in Spin-Orbit Coupling Systems

We present a simple and pedagogical derivation of the spin current as the linear response to an external electric field for both Rashba and Luttinger spin-orbital coupling Hamiltonians. Except for the adiabatic approximation, our derivation is exact to the linear order of the electric field for both models. The spin current is a direct result of the difference in occupation levels between different bands. Moreover, we show a general topological spin current can be defined for a broad class of spin-orbit coupling systems.

On Vortices and Phase Coherence in High Tc Superconductors

We show that an array of Josephson coupled Cooper paired planes can never have long range phase coherence at any finite temperature due to an infrared divergence of phase fluctuations. The phase correlations decay in a slow enough manner providing enough local phase coherence as to make possible the nucleation of vortices. The planes then acquire Kosterlitz-Thouless topological order with its intrinsic rigidity and concomitant superfluidity. We thus conclude that the high temperature superconducting cuprates are topologically ordered superconductors rather than phase ordered superconductors. For low enough superfluid densities, as in the underdoped cuprates, the transition temperature, Tc, will be proportional to the superfluid density corresponding to vortex-antivortex unbinding, and not to disappearance of the Cooper pairing amplitude. Above Tc, but below the BCS pairing temperature Tp, we will have a dephased Cooper pair fluid that is a vortex-antivortex liquid. The AC and DC conductivities measured in this region are those corresponding to flux flow. Furthermore there will be vortices above Tc which will lead to Nernst vortexlike response and there will be a measurable depairing field H_c2 above Tc as evidenced by recent experiments.

Magnetic Instability in Strongly Correlated Superconductors

Recently a new phenomenological Hamiltonian has been proposed to describe the superconducting cuprates. This so-called Gossamer Hamiltonian is an apt model for a superconductor with strong on-site Coulomb repulsion betweenthe electrons. It is shown that as one approaches half-filling the Gossamer superconductor, and hence the superconducting state, with strong repulsion is unstable toward an antiferromagnetic insulator an can undergo a quantum phase transition to such an insulator if one increases the on-site Coulomb repulsion.

Interaction among particles with fractionalized quantum numbers in one dimensional samples

The elementary excitations of strongly correlated one-dimensional electronic systems - spinons and holons - are discussed in an exact solution of the Haldane-Shastry and Kuramoto-Yokoyama model. We derive and exactly solve the equation of motion both for the two-spinon wavefunction and for the one-spinon, one-holon wavefunction. By solving the equations of motion we find the spinon-spinon and spinon-holon interaction to be a short-range attraction. The physical consequences of such an attraction on the spin-form factor and on the hole-spectral function are also worked out.

Coordinate Representation of the One-Spinon One-Holon Wavefunction and Spinon-Holon Interaction

By deriving and studying the coordinate representation for the one-spinon one-holon wavefunction we show that spinons and holons in the supersymmetric $t - J$ model with $1/r^2$ interaction attract each other. The interaction causes a probability enhancement in the one-spinon one-holon wavefunction at short separation between the particles. We express the hole spectral function for a finite lattice in terms of the probability enhancement, given by the one-spinon one-holon wavefunction at zero separation. In the thermodynamic limit, the spinon-holon attraction turns into the square-root divergence in the hole spectral function.
