Deformations of nearly parallel G_2-structures

We study the infinitesimal deformations of a proper nearly parallel G_2-structure and prove that they are characterized by a certain first order differential equation. In particular we show that the space of infinitesimal deformations modulo the group of diffeomorphisms is isomorphic to a subspace of co-closed $Λ^3_{27}$-eigenforms of the Laplace operator for the eigenvalue 8 scal/21. We give a similar description for the space of infinitesimal Einstein deformations of a fixed nearly parallel G_2-structure. Moreover we show that there are no deformations on the squashed S^7 and on SO(5)/SO(3), but that there are infinitesimal deformations on the Aloff-Wallach manifold N(1,1) = SU(3)/U(1).

On weak holonomy

We prove that SU(n) (n > 2) and Sp(n)U(1) (n > 1) are the only connected Lie groups acting transitively and effectively on some sphere which can be weak holonomy groups of a Riemannian manifold without having to contain its holonomy group. In both cases the manifold is Kaehler.

Sp(n)U(1)-connections with parallel totally skew-symmetric torsion

We consider the unique Hermitian connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion on a Hermitian manifold. We prove that if the torsion is parallel and the holonomy is Sp(n)U(1), considered as a subgroup of U(2n) x U(1), then the manifold is locally isomorphic to the twistor space of a quaternionic Kaehler manifold with positive scalar curvature. If the manifold is complete, then it is globally isomorphic to such a twistor space.

Almost Hermitian 6-Manifolds Revisited

A Theorem of Kirichenko states that the torsion 3-form of the characteristic connection of a nearly Kähler manifold is parallel. On the other side, any almost hermitian manifold of type $\mathrm{G}_1$ admits a unique connection with totally skew symmetric torsion. In dimension six, we generalize Kirichenko's Theorem and we describe almost hermitian $\mathrm{G}_1$-manifolds with parallel torsion form. In particular, among them there are only two types of $\mathcal{W}_3$-manifolds with a non-abelian holonomy group, namely twistor spaces of 4-dimensional self-dual Einstein manifolds and the invariant hermitian structure on the Lie group $\mathrm{SL}(2, \C)$. Moreover, we classify all naturally reductive hermitian $\mathcal{W}_3$-manifolds with small isotropy group of the characteristic torsion.

Hermitian spin surfaces with small eigenvalues of the Dolbeault operator

We study the compact Hermitian spin surfaces with positive conformal scalar curvature on which the first eigenvalue of the Dolbeault operator of the spin structure is the smallest possible. We prove that such a surface is either a ruled surface or a Hopf surface. We give a complete classification of the ruled surfaces with this property. For the Hopf surfaces we obtain a partial classification and some examples.

Vanishing theorems on Hermitian manifolds

We prove the vanishing of the Dolbeault cohomology groups on Hermitian manifolds with $dd^c$-harmonic Kähler form and positive (1,1)-part of the Ricci form of the Bismut connection. This implies the vanishing of the Dolbeault cohomology groups on complex surfaces which admit a conformal class of Hermitian metrics, such that the Ricci tensor of the canonical Weyl structure is positive. As a corollary we obtain that any such surface must be rational with $c_1^2 >0$. As an application, the pth Dolbeault cohomology groups of a left-invariant complex structure compatible with a bi-invariant metric on a compact even dimensional Lie group are computed.

Weyl structures with positive Ricci tensor

We prove the vanishing of the first Betti number on compact manifolds admitting a Weyl structure whose Ricci tensor satisfies certain positivity conditions, thus obtaining a Bochner-type vanishing theorem in Weyl geometry. We also study compact Hermitian-Weyl manifolds with non-negative symmetric part of the Ricci tensor of the canonical Weyl connection and show that every such manifold has first Betti number $b_1 =1$ and Hodge numbers $h^{p,0} =0$ for $p>0$, $h^{0,1} =1$, $h^{0,q} =0$ for $q>1$.

Hyper-Hermitian quaternionic Kaehler manifolds

We call a quaternionic Kaehler manifold with non-zero scalar curvature, whose quaternionic structure is trivialized by a hypercomplex structure, a hyper-Hermitian quaternionic Kaehler manifold. We prove that every locally symmetric hyper-Hermitian quaternionic Kaehler manifold is locally isometric to the quaternionic projective space or to the quaternionic hyperbolic space. We describe locally the hyper-Hermitian quaternionic Kaehler manifolds with closed Lee form and show that the only complete simply connected such manifold is the quaternionic hyperbolic space.

The Dolbeault operator on Hermitian spin surfaces

We consider the Dolbeault operator of $K^{1/2}$ -- the square root of the canonical line bundle which determines the spin structure of a compact Hermitian spin surface (M,g,J). We prove that the Dolbeault cohomology groups of $K^{1/2}$ vanish if the scalar curvature of g is non-negative and non-identically zero. Moreover, we estimate the first eigenvalue of the Dolbeault operator when the conformal scalar curvature k is non-negative and when k is positive. In the first case we give a complete list of limiting manifolds and in the second one we give non-Kähler examples of limiting manifolds.
