Dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model: transition from Mott insulator to superfluid

We study the dynamics of phase transitions in the one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. To drive the system from Mott insulator to superfluid phase, we change the tunneling frequency at a finite rate. We investigate the build up of correlations during fast and slow transitions using variational wave functions, dynamical Bogoliubov theory, Kibble-Zurek mechanism, and numerical simulations. We show that time-dependent correlations satisfy characteristic scaling relations that can be measured in optical lattices filled with cold atoms.

The Mott insulator phase of the one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model: a high order perturbative study

The one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at a unit filling factor is studied by means of a very high order symbolic perturbative expansion. Analytical expressions are derived for the ground state quantities such as energy per site, variance of on-site occupation, and different correlation functions. These findings are compared to numerics and good agreement is found in the Mott insulator phase. Our results provide analytical approximations to important observables in the Mott phase, and are also of direct relevance to future experiments with ultra cold atomic gases placed in optical lattices. We also discuss the symmetry of the Bose-Hubbard model associated with the sign change of the tunneling coupling.

Adiabatic-Impulse approximation for avoided level crossings: from phase transition dynamics to Landau-Zener evolutions and back again

We show that a simple approximation based on concepts underlying the Kibble-Zurek theory of second order phase transition dynamics can be used to treat avoided level crossing problems. The approach discussed in this paper provides an intuitive insight into quantum dynamics of two level systems, and may serve as a link between the theory of dynamics of classical and quantum phase transitions. To illustrate these ideas we analyze dynamics of a paramagnet-ferromagnet quantum phase transition in the Ising model. We also present exact unpublished solutions of the Landau-Zener like problems.

Shock waves in a one-dimensional Bose gas: from a Bose-Einstein condensate to a Tonks gas

We derive and analyze shock-wave solutions of hydrodynamic equations describing repulsively interacting one dimensional Bose gas. We also use the number-conserving Bogolubov approach to verify accuracy of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in shock wave problems. We show that quantum corrections to dynamics of shocks (dark-shock-originated solitons) in a Bose-Einstein condensate are negligible (important) for a realistic set of system parameters. We point out possible signatures of a Bose-Einstein condensate -- Tonks crossover in shock dynamics. Our findings can be directly verified in different experimental setups.

The simplest quantum model supporting the Kibble-Zurek mechanism of topological defect production: Landau-Zener transitions from a new perspective

It is shown that dynamics of the Landau-Zener model can be accurately described in terms of the Kibble-Zurek theory of the topological defect production in nonequilibrium phase transitions. The simplest quantum model exhibiting the Kibble-Zurek mechanism is presented. A new intuitive description of Landau-Zener dynamics is found.

Formation of shock waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider propagation of density wave packets in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the shape of initially broad, laser-induced, density perturbation changes in the course of free time evolution so that a shock wave front finally forms. Our results are well beyond predictions of commonly used zero-amplitude approach, so they can be useful in extraction of a speed of sound from experimental data. We discuss a simple experimental setup for shock propagation and point out possible limitations of the mean-field approach for description of shock phenomena in a BEC.

Shock waves in ultracold Fermi (Tonks) gases

It is shown that a broad density perturbation in a Fermi (Tonks) cloud takes a shock wave form in the course of time evolution. A very accurate analytical description of shock formation is provided. A simple experimental setup for the observation of shocks is discussed.

Changes of the topological charge of vortices

We consider changes of the topological charge of vortices in quantum mechanics by investigating analytical examples where the creation or annihilation of vortices occurs. In classical hydrodynamics of non-viscous fluids the Helmholtz-Kelvin theorem ensures that the velocity field circulation is conserved. We discuss applicability of the theorem in the hydrodynamical formulation of quantum mechanics showing that the assumptions of the theorem may be broken in quantum evolution of the wavefunction leading to a change of the topological charge.

Stirring Bose-Einstein condensate

By shining a tightly focused laser light on the condensate and moving the center of the beam along the spiral line one may stir the condensate and create vortices. It is shown that one can induce rotation of the condensate in the direction opposite to the direction of the stirring.

Collective excitation of trapped degenerate Fermi gases

We show that the slow driving of a focused laser beam through the cloud of trapped cold fermions allows for a creation of the collective excitation in the system. The method, proposed originally by us for bosons, seems to be quite feasible experimentally -- it requires only an appropriate change in time of the potential in atomic traps, as realized in laboratories already.

Simple method for excitation of a Bose-Einstein condensate

An appropriate, time-dependent modification of the trapping potential may be sufficient to create effectively collective excitations in a cold atom Bose-Einstein condensate. The proposed method is complementary to earlier suggestions and should allow the creation of both dark solitons and vortices.

Supersymmetry and Bogomol'nyi equations in the Maxwell Chern-Simons systems

We take advantage of the superspace formalism and explicitly find the N=2 supersymmetric extension of the Maxwell Chern-Simons model. In our construction a special form of a potential term and indispensability of an additional neutral scalar field arise naturally. By considering the algebra of supersymmetric charges we find Bogomol'nyi equations for the investigated model.
