Fast Reconstruction of Exact Maxwell Dynamics from Sparse Data

We introduce FLASH-MAX, a shallow, exact-by-construction neural network architecture for predicting homogeneous electromagnetic fields from sparse pointwise observations. Each hidden neuron represents a separate exact solution to Maxwell's equations, so that the network satisfies the governing equations symbolically by construction and can be trained end-to-end from sparse data within seconds. We prove a universal approximation result showing that this exact model class remains universal on arbitrary domains. FLASH-MAX reaches sub-1% relative validation error from about 1K sparse pointwise observations in seconds, all while maintaining a zero PDE residual, and keeps single-digit errors even for only 100 observations sampled from 3D space. These results suggest that moving governing structure from the loss into the hypothesis class can dramatically improve the trade-off between precision and optimization speed in scientific machine learning.

Partial regularity and higher integrability for A-quasiconvex variational problems

We prove that minimizers of variational problems on open sets $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ $$ \mbox{minimize}\quad \mathcal E(v)=\int_Ωf(v(x))\mathrm{d} x\quad\text{for } \mathscr{A} v=0, $$ are partially continuous provided that the integrands $f$ are strongly $\mathscr{A}$-quasiconvex in a suitable sense. We consider $p$-growth problems with $1<p<\infty$, linear constant rank PDE operators $\mathscr{A}$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ between vector spaces $V$ and $W$, and Dirichlet boundary conditions, in the sense that admissible fields are of the form $v=v_0+φ$, with $\mathscr{A}$-free $φ\in C_c^\infty(Ω,V)$. Our analysis also covers the ``potentials case'' $$ \mbox{minimize}\quad \mathcal F(u)=\int_Ωf(\mathscr{B} u(x))\mathrm{d} x\quad\text{for } u\in u_0+ C_c^\infty(Ω,U), $$ where $\mathscr{B}$ is another linear constant rank PDE operator on $\mathbb{R}^n$ between vector spaces $U,V$. We also prove appropriate higher integrability of minimizers for both types of problems. In addition, our approach covers non-autonomous integrands $f(x,v(x))$ or $f(x,\mathscr{B} u(x))$.

Partial regularity for $\mathscr{A}$-quasiconvex variational problems of linear growth

We prove that minimizers of variational integrals $$ \mathcal E(v)=\int_Ωf(v)\quad\text{for }v\in\mathcal M(Ω)\text{ such that } \mathscr{A} v=0, $$ are partially continuous provided that the integrands $f$ are strongly $\mathscr{A}$-quasiconvex in a suitable sense. We consider linear growth problems, linear PDE operators $\mathscr{A}$ of constant rank, and variations of the form $v+φ$ with $\mathscr{A}$-free $φ\in \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm{c}}^\infty(Ω)$. Our analysis also covers the ``potentials case'' $$ \mathcal F(u)=\int_Ωf( \mathscr{B} u)\quad\text{for } u\in\mathscr D'(Ω)\text{ such that }\mathscr B u\in \mathcal M(Ω), $$ where $\mathscr{B}$ is a different linear pde operator of constant rank. Both our main results extend to $x$-dependent integrands.

Comparison of polynomial matrix differential operators

We characterize matrix polynomials $P,Q$ such that the inequality $$ \left\Vert Q(D)u\right\Vert _{L^{2}}\leq C\left\Vert P(D)u\right\Vert _{L^{2}}\quad\text{for all }u\in C_c^\infty(Ω), $$ holds on bounded open sets $Ω$. We also characterize the operators $P,Q$ for which the linear continuous embedding above is compact, i.e., if $u_n\in C_c^\infty(Ω)$ are such that $(P(D)u_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is bounded in $L^2$, then $(Q(D)u_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is strongly compact in $L^2$.

Comparing EPGP Surrogates and Finite Elements Under Degree-of-Freedom Parity

We present a new benchmarking study comparing a boundary-constrained Ehrenpreis--Palamodov Gaussian Process (B-EPGP) surrogate with a classical finite element method combined with Crank--Nicolson time stepping (CN-FEM) for solving the two-dimensional wave equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The B-EPGP construction leverages exponential-polynomial bases derived from the characteristic variety to enforce the PDE and boundary conditions exactly and employs penalized least squares to estimate the coefficients. To ensure fairness across paradigms, we introduce a degrees-of-freedom (DoF) matching protocol. Under matched DoF, B-EPGP consistently attains lower space-time $L^2$-error and maximum-in-time $L^{2}$-error in space than CN-FEM, improving accuracy by roughly two orders of magnitude.

Gaussian Process Priors for Boundary Value Problems of Linear Partial Differential Equations

Working with systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) is a fundamental task in computational science. Well-posed systems are addressed by numerical solvers or neural operators, whereas systems described by data are often addressed by PINNs or Gaussian processes. In this work, we propose Boundary Ehrenpreis--Palamodov Gaussian Processes (B-EPGPs), a novel probabilistic framework for constructing GP priors that satisfy both general systems of linear PDEs with constant coefficients and linear boundary conditions and can be conditioned on a finite data set. We explicitly construct GP priors for representative PDE systems with practical boundary conditions. Formal proofs of correctness are provided and empirical results demonstrating significant accuracy and computational resource improvements over state-of-the-art approaches.

Gaussian Process Regression for Inverse Problems in Linear PDEs

This paper introduces a computationally efficient algorithm in system theory for solving inverse problems governed by linear partial differential equations (PDEs). We model solutions of linear PDEs using Gaussian processes with priors defined based on advanced commutative algebra and algebraic analysis. The implementation of these priors is algorithmic and achieved using the Macaulay2 computer algebra software. An example application includes identifying the wave speed from noisy data for classical wave equations, which are widely used in physics. The method achieves high accuracy while enhancing computational efficiency.

Quasiconvexity and self-improving size estimates

We show that Müller's $L\log L$ bound $$F(Du)\geq 0,\,Du\in L^p_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)\implies F(Du)\in L\log L_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$$ for $F =\det$ and $p=n$ holds for quasiconcave $F$ which are homogeneous of degree $p>1$. This contrasts similar Hardy space bounds which hold only for null Lagrangians.

Compensation phenomena for concentration effects via nonlinear elliptic estimates

We study compensation phenomena for fields satisfying both a pointwise and a linear differential constraint. This effect takes the form of nonlinear elliptic estimates, where constraining the values of the field to lie in a cone compensates for the lack of ellipticity of the differential operator. We give a series of new examples of this phenomenon for a geometric class of cones and operators such as the divergence or the curl. One of our main findings is that the maximal gain of integrability is tied to both the differential operator and the cone, contradicting in particular a recent conjecture from arXiv:2106.03077. This extends the recent theory of compensated integrability due to D. Serre. In particular, we find a new family of integrands that are Div-quasiconcave under convex constraints.

On Scaling Properties for a Class of Two-Well Problems for Higher Order Homogeneous Linear Differential Operators

We study the scaling behaviour of a class of compatible two-well problems for higher order, homogeneous linear differential operators. To this end, we first deduce general lower scaling bounds which are determined by the vanishing order of the symbol of the operator on the unit sphere in direction of the associated element in the wave cone. We complement the lower bound estimates by a detailed analysis of the two-well problem for generalized (tensor-valued) symmetrized derivatives with the help of the (tensor-valued) Saint-Venant compatibility conditions. In two spatial dimensions for highly symmetric boundary data (but arbitrary tensor order $m \in \mathbb{N}$) we provide upper bound constructions matching the lower bound estimates. This illustrates that for the two-well problem for higher order operators new scaling laws emerge which are determined by the Fourier symbol in the direction of the wave cone. The scaling for the symmetrized gradient from \cite{CC15} which was also discussed in \cite{RRT23} provides an example of this family of new scaling laws.

Gaussian Process Priors for Systems of Linear Partial Differential Equations with Constant Coefficients

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are important tools to model physical systems and including them into machine learning models is an important way of incorporating physical knowledge. Given any system of linear PDEs with constant coefficients, we propose a family of Gaussian process (GP) priors, which we call EPGP, such that all realizations are exact solutions of this system. We apply the Ehrenpreis-Palamodov fundamental principle, which works as a non-linear Fourier transform, to construct GP kernels mirroring standard spectral methods for GPs. Our approach can infer probable solutions of linear PDE systems from any data such as noisy measurements, or pointwise defined initial and boundary conditions. Constructing EPGP-priors is algorithmic, generally applicable, and comes with a sparse version (S-EPGP) that learns the relevant spectral frequencies and works better for big data sets. We demonstrate our approach on three families of systems of PDEs, the heat equation, wave equation, and Maxwell's equations, where we improve upon the state of the art in computation time and precision, in some experiments by several orders of magnitude.

Boundary ellipticity and limiting $L^1$-estimates on halfspaces

We identify necessary and sufficient conditions on $k$th order differential operators $\mathbb{A}$ in terms of a fixed halfspace $H^+\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ such that the Gagliardo--Nirenberg--Sobolev inequality $$ \|D^{k-1}u\|_{\mathrm{L}^{\frac{n}{n-1}}(H^+)}\leq c\|\mathbb{A} u\|_{\mathrm{L}^1(H^+)}\quad\text{for }u\in\mathrm{C}^\infty_c (\mathbb{R}^{n},V) $$ holds. This comes as a consequence of sharp trace theorems on $H=\partial H^+$.

Weak and Strong Extremal Biquadratics

We study quasiconvex quadratic forms on $n \times m$ matrices which correspond to nonnegative biquadratic forms in $(n,m)$ variables. We disprove a conjecture stated by Harutyunyan--Milton (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 70(11), 2017) as well as Harutyunyan--Hovsepyan (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 244, 2022) that extremality in the cone of quasiconvex quadratic forms on $3\times 3$ matrices can follow only from the extremality of the determinant of its acoustic tensor, using previous work by Buckley--Šivic (Linear Algebra Appl. 598, 2020). Our main result is to establish a conjecture of Harutyunyan--Milton (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 70(11), 2017) that weak extremal quasiconvex quadratics on $3 \times 3$ matrices are strong extremal. Our main technical ingredient is a generalization of the work of Kunert--Scheiderer on extreme nonnegative ternary sextics (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 370(6), 2018). Specifically, we show that a nonnegative ternary sextic, which is not a square, is extremal if and only if its variety (over the complex numbers) is a rational curve and all its singularities are real.

Syzygies, constant rank, and beyond

We study linear PDE with constant coefficients. The constant rank condition on a system of linear PDEs with constant coefficients is often used in the theory of compensated compactness. While this is a purely linear algebraic condition, the nonlinear algebra concept of primary decomposition is another important tool for studying such system of PDEs. In this paper we investigate the connection between these two concepts. From the nonlinear analysis point of view, we make some progress in the study of weak lower semicontinuity of integral functionals defined on sequences of PDE constrained fields, when the PDEs do not have constant rank.

Bilevel training schemes in imaging for total-variation-type functionals with convex integrands

In the context of image processing, given a $k$-th order, homogeneous and linear differential operator with constant coefficients, we study a class of variational problems whose regularizing terms depend on the operator. Precisely, the regularizers are integrals of spatially inhomogeneous integrands with convex dependence on the differential operator applied to the image function. The setting is made rigorous by means of the theory of Radon measures and of suitable function spaces modeled on $BV$. We prove the lower semicontinuity of the functionals at stake and existence of minimizers for the corresponding variational problems. Then, we embed the latter into a bilevel scheme in order to automatically compute the space-dependent regularization parameters, thus allowing for good flexibility and preservation of details in the reconstructed image. We establish existence of optima for the scheme and we finally substantiate its feasibility by numerical examples in image denoising. The cases that we treat are Huber versions of the first and second order total variation with both the Huber and the regularization parameter being spatially dependent. Notably the spatially dependent version of second order total variation produces high quality reconstructions when compared to regularizations of similar type, and the introduction of the spatially dependent Huber parameter leads to a further enhancement of the image details.

Compensated compactness: continuity in optimal weak topologies

For $l$-homogeneous linear differential operators $\mathcal{A}$ of constant rank, we study the implication $v_j\rightharpoonup v$ in $X$ and $\mathcal{A} v_j\rightarrow \mathcal{A} v$ in $W^{-l}Y$ implies $F(v_j)\rightsquigarrow F(v)$ in $Z$, where $F$ is an $\mathcal{A}$-quasiaffine function and $\rightsquigarrow$ denotes an appropriate type of weak convergence. Here $Z$ is a local $L^1$-type space, either the space $\mathscr{M}$ of measures, or $L^1$, or the Hardy space $\mathscr{H}^1$; $X,\, Y$ are $L^p$-type spaces, by which we mean Lebesgue or Zygmund spaces. Our conditions for each choice of $X,\,Y,\,Z$ are sharp. Analogous statements are also given in the case when $F(v)$ is not a locally integrable function and it is instead defined as a distribution. In this case, we also prove $\mathscr{H}^p$-bounds for the sequence $(F(v_j))_j$, for appropriate $p<1$, and new convergence results in the dual of Hölder spaces when $(v_j)$ is $\mathcal{A}$-free and lies in a suitable negative order Sobolev space $W^{-β,s}$. The choice of these Hölder spaces is sharp, as is shown by the construction of explicit counterexamples. Some of these results are new even for distributional Jacobians.
