Bounded weak solutions to the thin film Muskat problem via an infinite family of Liapunov functionals

A countably infinite family of Liapunov functionals is constructed for the thin film Muskat problem, which is a second-order degenerate parabolic system featuring cross-diffusion. More precisely, for each n $\ge$ 2 we construct an homogeneous polynomial of degree n, which is convex on [0, $\infty$)^2 , with the property that its integral is a Liapunov functional for the problem. Existence of global bounded non-negative weak solutions is then shown in one space dimension.

The porous medium equation as a singular limit of the thin film Muskat problem

The singular limit of the thin film Muskat problem is performed when the density (and possibly the viscosity) of the lighter fluid vanishes and the porous medium equation is identified as the limit problem. In particular, the height of the denser fluid is shown to converge towards the solution to the porous medium equation and an explicit rate for this convergence is provided in space dimension d $\le$ 4. Moreover, the limit of the height of the lighter fluid is determined in a certain regime and is given by the corresponding initial condition.

Well-posedness of the Muskat problem in subcritical $L_p$-Sobolev spaces

We study the Muskat problem describing the vertical motion of two immiscible fluids in a two-dimensional homogeneous porous medium in an $L_p$-setting with $p\in(1,\infty)$. The Sobolev space $W^s_p(\mathbb{R})$ with $s=1+1/p$ is a critical space for this problem. We prove, for $s\in (1+1/p,2),$ that the Rayleigh-Taylor condition identifies an open subset of $W^s_p(\mathbb{R})$ within which the Muskat problem is of parabolic type. This enables us to establish the local well-posedness of the problem in all these subcritical spaces together with a parabolic smoothing property.

Two-phase Stokes flow by capillarity in the plane: The case of different viscosities

We study the two-phase Stokes flow driven by surface tension for two fluids of different viscosities, separated by an asymptotically flat interface representable as graph of a differentiable function. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional with the fluids filling the entire space. We prove well-posedness and parabolic smoothing in Sobolev spaces up to critical regularity. The main technical tools are an analysis of nonlinear singular integral operators arising from the hydrodynamic single and double layer potential, spectral results on the corresponding integral operators, and abstract results on nonlinear parabolic evolution equations.

The multiphase Muskat problem with equal viscosities in two dimensions

We study the two-dimensional multiphase Muskat problem describing the motion of three immiscible fluids with equal viscosities in a vertical homogeneous porous medium identified with $\mathbb{R}^2$ under the effect of gravity. We first formulate the governing equations as a strongly coupled evolution problem for the functions that parameterize the sharp interfaces between the fluids. Afterwards we prove that the problem is of parabolic type and establish its well-posedness together with two parabolic smoothing properties. For solutions that are not global we exclude, in a certain regime, that the interfaces come into contact along a curve segment.

The Muskat problem with surface tension and equal viscosities in subcritical $L_p$-Sobolev spaces

In this paper we establish the well-posedness of the Muskat problem with surface tension and equal viscosities in the subcritical Sobolev spaces $W^s_p(\mathbb{R})$, where ${p\in(1,2]}$ and ${s\in(1+1/p,2)}$. This is achieved by showing that the mathematical model can be formulated as a quasilinear parabolic evolution problem in $W^{\overline{s}-2}_p(\mathbb{R})$, where ${\overline{s}\in(1+1/p,s)}$. Moreover, we prove that the solutions become instantly smooth and we provide a criterion for the global existence of solutions.

Two-phase Stokes flow by capillarity in full 2D space: an approach via hydrodynamic potentials

We study the two-phase Stokes flow driven by surface tension with two fluids of equal viscosity, separated by an asymptotically flat interface with graph geometry. The flow is assumed to be two-dimensional with the fluids filling the entire space. We prove well-posedness and parabolic smoothing in Sobolev spaces up to critical regularity. The main technical tools are an analysis of nonlinear singular integral operators arising from the hydrodynamic single-layer potential and abstract results on nonlinear parabolic evolution equations.

Stratified periodic water waves with singular density gradients

We consider Euler's equations for free surface waves traveling on a body of density stratified water in the scenario when gravity and surface tension act as restoring forces. The flow is continuously stratified, and the water layer is bounded from below by an impermeable horizontal bed. For this problem we establish three equivalent classical formulations in a suitable setting of strong solutions which may describe nevertheless waves with singular density gradients. Based upon this equivalence we then construct two-dimensional symmetric periodic traveling waves that are monotone between each crest and trough. Our analysis uses, to a large extent, the availability of a weak formulation of the water wave problem, the regularity properties of the corresponding weak solutions, and methods from nonlinear functional analysis.

On a degenerate parabolic system describing the mean curvature flow of rotationally symmetric closed surfaces

We show that the mean curvature flow for a closed and rotationally symmetric surface can be formulated as an evolution problem consisting of an evolution equation for the square of the function whose graph is rotated and two ODEs describing the evolution of the points of the evolving surface that lie on the rotation axis. For the fully nonlinear and degenerate parabolic problem we establish the well-posedness property in the setting of classical solutions. Besides we prove that the problem features the effect of parabolic smoothing.

The Muskat problem in 2D: equivalence of formulations, well-posedness, and regularity results

In this paper we consider the Muskat problem describing the motion of two unbounded immiscible fluid layers with equal viscosities in vertical or horizontal two-dimensional geometries. We first prove that the mathematical model can be formulated as an evolution problem for the sharp interface separating the two fluids, which turns out to be, in a suitable functional analytic setting, quasilinear and of parabolic type. Based upon these properties, we then establish the local well-posedness of the problem for arbitrary large initial data and show that the solutions become instantly real-analytic in time and space. Our method allows us to choose the initial data in the class $H^s,$ $s\in(3/2,2)$, when neglecting surface tension, respectively in $H^s,$ $s\in(2,3),$ when surface tension effects are included. Besides, we provide new criteria for the global existence of solutions.

The domain of parabolicity for the Muskat problem

We address the well-posedness of the Muskat problem in a periodic geometry and in a setting which allows us to consider general initial and boundary data, gravity effects, as well as surface tension effects. In the absence of surface tension we prove that the Rayleigh-Taylor condition identifies a domain of parabolicity for the Muskat problem. This property is used to establish the well-posedness of the problem. In the presence of surface tension effects the Muskat problem is of parabolic type for general initial and boundary data. As a bi-product of our analysis we obtain that Dirichlet-Neumann type operators associated with certain diffraction problems are negative generators of strongly continuous and analytic semigroups in the scale of small Hölder spaces.

Well-posedness and stability results for some periodic Muskat problems

We study the two-dimensional Muskat problem in a horizontally periodic setting and for fluids with arbitrary densities and viscosities. We show that in the presence of surface tension effects the Muskat problem is a quasilinear parabolic problem which is well-posed in the Sobolev space $H^r(\mathbb{S})$ for each $r\in(2,3)$. When neglecting surface tension effects, the Muskat problem is a fully nonlinear evolution equation and of parabolic type in the regime where the Rayleigh-Taylor condition is satisfied. We then establish the well-posedness of the Muskat problem in the open subset of $H^2(\mathbb{S})$ defined by the Rayleigh-Taylor condition. Besides, we identify all equilibrium solutions and study the stability properties of trivial and of small finger-shaped equilibria. Also other qualitative properties of solutions such as parabolic smoothing, blow-up behavior, and criteria for global existence are outlined.

Viscous displacement in porous media: the Muskat problem in 2D

We consider the Muskat problem describing the viscous displacement in a two-phase fluid system located in an unbounded two-dimensional porous medium or Hele-Shaw cell. After formulating the mathematical model as an evolution problem for the sharp interface between the fluids, we show that Muskat problem with surface tension is a quasilinear parabolic problem, whereas, in the absence of surface tension effects, the Rayleigh-Taylor condition identifies a domain of parabolicity for the fully nonlinear problem. Based upon these aspects, we then establish the local well-posedness for arbitrary large initial data in $H^s$, $s>2$, if surface tension is taken into account, respectively for arbitrary large initial data in $H^2$ that additionally satisfy the Rayleigh-Taylor condition if surface tension effects are neglected. We also show that the problem exhibits the parabolic smoothing effect and we provide criteria for the global existence of solutions.

Well-posedness and stability results for a quasilinear periodic Muskat problem

We study the Muskat problem describing the spatially periodic motion of two fluids with equal viscosities under the effect of gravity in a vertical unbounded two-dimensional geometry. We first prove that the classical formulation of the problem is equivalent to a nonlocal and nonlinear evolution equation expressed in terms of singular integrals and having only the interface between the fluids as unknown. Secondly, we show that this evolution equation has a quasilinear structure, which is at a formal level not obvious, and we also disclose the parabolic character of the equation. Exploiting these aspects, we establish the local well-posedness of the problem for arbitrary initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{S})$, with $s\in(3/2,2)$, determine a new criterion for the global existence of solutions, and uncover a parabolic smoothing property. Besides, we prove that the zero steady-state solution is exponentially stable.

Finite speed of propagation and waiting time for a thin film Muskat problem

Finite speed of propagation is established for non-negative weak solutions to a thin film approximation of the two-phase Muskat problem. The temporal expansion rate of the support matches the scale invariance of the system. Moreover, we determine sufficient conditions on the initial data for the occurrence of waiting time phenomena.

Recovery of Stokes waves from velocity measurements on an axis of symmetry

We provide a new method to recover the profile of Stokes waves, and more generally of waves with smooth vorticity, from measurements of the horizontal velocity component on a vertical axis of symmetry of the wave surface. Although we consider periodic waves only, the extension to solitary waves is straightforward.

Gravity water flows with discontinuous vorticity and stagnation points

We construct small-amplitude steady periodic gravity water waves arising as the free surface of water flows that contain stagnation points and possess a discontinuous distribution of vorticity in the sense that the flows consist of two layers of constant but different vorticities. We also describe the streamline pattern in the moving frame for the constructed flows.
