Scalable, self-verifying variational quantum eigensolver using adiabatic warm starts

We study an adiabatic variant of the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) in which VQE is performed iteratively for a sequence of Hamiltonians along an adiabatic path. We derive the conditions under which gradient-based optimization successfully prepares the adiabatic ground states. These conditions show that the barren plateau problem and local optima can be avoided. Additionally, we propose using energy-standard-deviation measurements at runtime to certify eigenstate accuracy and verify convergence to the global optimum.

Variational ground-state quantum adiabatic theorem

We present a variational quantum adiabatic theorem, which states that, under certain assumptions, the adiabatic dynamics projected onto a variational manifold follow the instantaneous variational ground state. We focus on low-entanglement variational manifolds and target Hamiltonians with classical ground states. Despite the presence of highly entangled intermediate states along the exact quantum annealing path, the variational evolution converges to the target ground state. We demonstrate this approach with several examples that align with our theoretical analysis.

Mean-field dynamics of an infinite-range interacting quantum system: chaos, dynamical phase transition, and localisation

We investigate the dynamical properties of the XY spin 1/2 chain with infinite-range transverse interactions and find a dynamical phase transition with a chaotic dynamical phase. In the latter, we find non-vanishing finite-time Lyapunov exponents and intermittent behavior signaled by fast and slow entropy growth periods. Further, we study the XY chain with a local self-consistent transverse field and observe a localization phase transition. We show that localization stabilizes the chaotic dynamical phase.

Mean-field approach to Mid-spectrum Eigenstates of long-range interacting Quantum Systems

We study the equilibrium properties of the spin-$1/2$ XY chain with an infinite-range transverse interaction. At zero temperature, competition between the XY- and the $z$-ordered phases induced by the infinite-range interactions gives rise to a first-order transition upon increasing the transverse coupling. We show that the two gapless points of the XY model behave in fundamentally different ways: isotropic spin chains experience a first-order transition at finite coupling; maximal anisotropic chains overcome a non-algebraic phase transition at zero coupling strength. The phase diagram depicts a first-order reentrant transition that turns second-order along a tricritical line separating a paramagnetic phase from an ordered one at finite temperature. The mean-field approach captures the local properties of the eigenstates and reveals the appearance of a magnetization gap in the spectrum. Global properties, e.g., entanglement entropy, are well approximated only at spectral boundaries. The mean entanglement entropy and the level-spacing ratio deviate from the Gaussian results, revealing the interacting nature of the problem.

Positive unlabeled learning with tensor networks

Positive unlabeled learning is a binary classification problem with positive and unlabeled data. It is common in domains where negative labels are costly or impossible to obtain, e.g., medicine and personalized advertising. Most approaches to positive unlabeled learning apply to specific data types (e.g., images, categorical data) and can not generate new positive and negative samples. This work introduces a feature-space distance-based tensor network approach to the positive unlabeled learning problem. The presented method is not domain specific and significantly improves the state-of-the-art results on the MNIST image and 15 categorical/mixed datasets. The trained tensor network model is also a generative model and enables the generation of new positive and negative instances.

Grokking phase transitions in learning local rules with gradient descent

We discuss two solvable grokking (generalisation beyond overfitting) models in a rule learning scenario. We show that grokking is a phase transition and find exact analytic expressions for the critical exponents, grokking probability, and grokking time distribution. Further, we introduce a tensor-network map that connects the proposed grokking setup with the standard (perceptron) statistical learning theory and show that grokking is a consequence of the locality of the teacher model. As an example, we analyse the cellular automata learning task, numerically determine the critical exponent and the grokking time distributions and compare them with the prediction of the proposed grokking model. Finally, we numerically analyse the connection between structure formation and grokking.

Deep tensor networks with matrix product operators

We introduce deep tensor networks, which are exponentially wide neural networks based on the tensor network representation of the weight matrices. We evaluate the proposed method on the image classification (MNIST, FashionMNIST) and sequence prediction (cellular automata) tasks. In the image classification case, deep tensor networks improve our matrix product state baselines and achieve 0.49% error rate on MNIST and 8.3% error rate on FashionMNIST. In the sequence prediction case, we demonstrate an exponential improvement in the number of parameters compared to the one-layer tensor network methods. In both cases, we discuss the non-uniform and the uniform tensor network models and show that the latter generalizes well to different input sizes.

Dynamical Phase Diagram of a Quantum Ising Chain with Long Range Interactions

We investigate the effect of short-range correlations on the dynamical phase diagram of quantum many-body systems with long-range interactions. Focusing on Ising spin chains with power-law decaying interactions and accounting for short-range correlations by a cluster mean field theory we show that short-range correlations are responsible for the emergence of a chaotic dynamical region. Analyzing the fine details of the phase diagram, we show that the resulting chaotic dynamics bears close analogies with that of a tossed coin.

Scrambling and entanglement spreading in long-range spin chains

We study scrambling in connection to multipartite entanglement dynamics in regular and chaotic long-range spin chains, characterized by a well defined semi-classical limit. For regular dynamics, scrambling and entanglement dynamics are found to be very different: up to the Ehrenfest time they rise side by side departing only afterwards. Entanglement saturates and becomes extensively multipartite, while scrambling continues its growth up to the recurrence time. Remarkably, the exponential behaviour of scrambling emerges not only in the chaotic case, but also in the regular one, when the dynamics occurs at a dynamical critical point.

Continuous phase-space methods on discrete phase spaces

We show that discrete quasiprobability distributions defined via the discrete Heisenberg-Weyl group can be obtained as discretizations of the continuous $SU(N)$ quasiprobability distributions. This is done by identifying the phase-point operators with the continuous quantisation kernels evaluated at special points of the phase space. As an application we discuss the positive-P function and show that its discretization can be used to treat the problem of diverging trajectories. We study the dissipative long-range transverse-field Ising chain and show that the long-time dynamics of local observables is well described by a semiclassical approximation of the interactions.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Phase Transitions in the XY model: comparison of unitary time evolution and reduced density matrix approaches

We study nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in XY spin 1/2 chain using the $C^*$ algebra. We show that the well-known quantum phase transition at magnetic field $h = 1$ persists also in the nonequilibrium setting as long as one of the reservoirs is set to absolute zero temperature. In addition, we find nonequilibrium phase transitions associated to imaginary part of the correlation matrix for any two different temperatures of the reservoirs at $h = 1$ and $h = h_{\rm c} \equiv|1-γ^2|$, where $γ$ is the anisotropy and $h$ the magnetic field strength. In particular, two nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions coexist at $h=1$. In addition we also study the quantum mutual information in all regimes and find a logarithmic correction of the area law in the nonequilibrium steady state independent of the system parameters. We use these nonequilibrium phase transitions to test the utility of two models of reduced density operator, namely Lindblad mesoreservoir and modified Redfield equation. We show that the nonequilibrium quantum phase transition at $h = 1$ related to the divergence of magnetic susceptibility is recovered in the mesoreservoir approach, whereas it is not recovered using the Redfield master equation formalism. However none of the reduced density operator approaches could recover all the transitions observed by the $C^*$ algebra. We also study thermalization properties of the mesoreservoir approach.

Closed hierarchy of correlations in Markovian open quantum systems

We study the Lindblad master equation in the space of operators and provide simple criteria for closeness of the hierarchy of equations for correlations. We separately consider the time evolution of closed and open systems and show that open systems satisfying the closeness conditions are not necessary of Gaussian type. In addition, we show that dissipation can induce the closeness of the hierarchy of correlations in interacting quantum systems. As an example we study an interacting optomechanical model, the Fermi-Hubbard model, and the Rabi model, all coupled to a fine-tuned Markovian environment and obtain exact analytic expressions for the time evolution of two-point correlations.

Quantum group approach to steady states of boundary-driven open quantum systems

We present a systematic approach for constructing steady state density operators of Markovian dissipative evolution for open quantum chain models with integrable bulk interaction and boundary incoherent driving. The construction is based on fundamental solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation pertaining to quantum algebra symmetries and their quantizations (q-deformations). In particular, we facilitate a matrix-product state description, by resorting to generic spin-s infinite-dimensional solutions associated with non-compact spins, serving as ancillary degrees of freedom. After formally deriving already known solutions for the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain from first symmetry principles, we obtain a class of solutions belonging to interacting quantum gases with SU(N)-symmetric Hamiltonians, using a restricted set of incoherent boundary jump processes, and point out how new non-trivial generalizations emerge from twists of quantum group structures. Finally, we discuss possibilities of analytic calculation of observables by employing algebraic properties of associated auxiliary vertex operators.

Markovian kinetic equation approach to electron transport through quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads

We present a derivation of Markovian master equation for the out of equilibrium quantum dot connected to two superconducting reservoirs, which are described by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians and have the chemical potentials, the temperatures, and the complex order parameters as the relevant quantities. We consider a specific example in which the quantum dot is represented by the Anderson impurity model and study the transport properties, proximity effect and Andreev bound states in equilibrium and far from equilibrium setups.

Heat transport in quantum harmonic chains with Redfield baths

We provide an explicit method for solving general markovian master equations for quadratic bosonic Hamiltonians with linear bath operators. As an example we consider a one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator chain coupled to thermal reservoirs at both ends of the chain. We derive an analytic solution of the Redfield master equation for homogeneous harmonic chain and recover classical results, namely, vanishing temperature gradient and constant heat current in the thermodynamic limit. In the case of the disordered gapped chains we observe universal heat current scaling independent of the bath spectral function, the system-bath coupling strength, and the boundary conditions.
