Closing the gap and settling the problem of queens on an $n\times n$ board, each attacking at most one other

Let $q(n)$ denote the largest number of queens that can be placed on an $n\times n$ chessboard so that no queen attacks more than one other queen. We prove that $q(n)=\lfloor4n/3\rfloor$ for every $n\geqslant6$, and that $q(n)=n$ for $n\leqslant5$, which settles a previously conjectural value. As a corollary, we also settle that, in the version of the problem where each queen attacks \emph{exactly} one other queen, the answer is $2\lfloor2n/3\rfloor$, again as previously conjectured.

Seeing is not believing in limited visibility cops and robbers

We consider the model of limited visibility Cops and Robbers, where the cops can only see within their $l$-neighbourhood. We prove that the number of cops needed to see the robber can be arbitrarily smaller than the number needed to capture the robber, answering an open question from the literature. We then consider how close we can get to seeing the robber when we do not have enough cops, along with a probabilistic interpretation.

Categories of impartial rulegraphs and gamegraphs

The traditional mathematical model for an impartial combinatorial game is defined recursively as a set of the options of the game, where the options are games themselves. We propose a model called gamegraph, together with its generalization rulegraph, based on the natural description of a game as a digraph where the vertices are positions and the arrows represent possible moves. Such digraphs form a category where the morphisms are option preserving maps. We study several versions of this category. Our development includes congruence relations, quotients, and isomorphism theorems and is analogous to the corresponding notions in universal algebra. The quotient by the maximum congruence relation produces an object that is essentially equivalent to the traditional model. After the development of the general theory, we count the number of non-isomorphic gamegraphs and rulegraphs by formal birthday and the number of positions.

On absorption in semigroups and $n$-ary semigroups

The notion of absorption was developed a few years ago by Barto and Kozik and immediately found many applications, particularly in topics related to the constraint satisfaction problem. We investigate the behavior of absorption in semigroups and n-ary semigroups (that is, algebras with one n-ary associative operation). In the case of semigroups, we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a semigroup to be absorbed by its subsemigroup. We then proceed to n-ary semigroups, where we conjecture an analogue of this necessary and sufficient condition, and prove that the conjectured condition is indeed necessary and sufficient for B to absorb A (where A is an n-ary semigroup and B is its n-ary subsemigroup) in the following three cases: when A is commutative, when |A-B|=1 and when A is an idempotent ternary semigroup.
