A limit theorem for moving averages in the α-stable domain of attraction

In the early 1990's, Avram and Taqqu showed that regularly varying moving average processes with all coefficients nonnegative and the tail index strictly between 0 and 2 satisfy functional limit theorem. They also conjectured that an equivalent statement holds under a certain less restrictive assumption on the coefficients, but in a different topology on the space of cádlág functions. We give a proof of this result.

A functional limit theorem for dependent sequences with infinite variance stable limits

Under an appropriate regular variation condition, the affinely normalized partial sums of a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables converges weakly to a non-Gaussian stable random variable. A functional version of this is known to be true as well, the limit process being a stable Lévy process. The main result in the paper is that for a stationary, regularly varying sequence for which clusters of high-threshold excesses can be broken down into asymptotically independent blocks, the properly centered partial sum process still converges to a stable Lévy process. Due to clustering, the Lévy triple of the limit process can be different from the one in the independent case. The convergence takes place in the space of càdlàg functions endowed with Skorohod's $M_1$ topology, the more usual $J_1$ topology being inappropriate as the partial sum processes may exhibit rapid successions of jumps within temporal clusters of large values, collapsing in the limit to a single jump. The result rests on a new limit theorem for point processes which is of independent interest. The theory is applied to moving average processes, squared GARCH(1,1) processes and stochastic volatility models.

Heavy tailed branching process with immigration

In this paper we analyze a branching process with immigration defined recursively by $X_t=θ_t\circ X_{t-1}+B_t$ for a sequence $(B_t)$ of i.i.d. random variables and random mappings $ θ_t\circ x:=θ_t(x)=\sum_{i=1}^xA_i^{(t)}, $ with $(A_i^{(t)})_{i\in \mathbb{N}_0}$ being a sequence of $\mathbb{N}_0$-valued i.i.d. random variables independent of $B_t$. We assume that one of generic variables $A$ and $B$ has a regularly varying tail distribution. We identify the tail behaviour of the distribution of the stationary solution $X_t$. We also prove CLT for the partial sums that could be further generalized to FCLT. Finally, we also show that partial maxima have a Fréchet limiting distribution.

Regularly varying multivariate time series

A multivariate, stationary time series is said to be jointly regularly varying if all its finite-dimensional distributions are multivariate regularly varying. This property is shown to be equivalent to weak convergence of the conditional distribution of the rescaled series given that, at a fixed time instant, its distance to the origin exceeds a threshold tending to infinity. The limit object, called the tail process, admits a decomposition in independent radial and angular components. Under an appropriate mixing condition, this tail process allows for a concise and explicit description of the limit of a sequence of point processes recording both the times and the positions of the time series when it is far away from the origin. The theory is applied to multivariate moving averages of finite order with random coefficient matrices.
